As a recent addition to the Smyrna community, I am excited to introduce myself to you. My name is Dr. Brandon Villar, and I am a DMD at Smyrna Family Dentistry. My wife and I are proud to have purchased the practice in February 2022, shortly after we tied the knot in January.
It is an absolute honor to be the new owners of a longstanding practice that has been serving the Smyrna community for over 68 years. We take great pride in seeing five generations of patients and hope to continue the tradition of excellence in familyfriendly dentistry.
My wife, Morgan, is currently pursuing her Masters of Divinity at Emory, and we are looking forward to starting a family soon. We are currently proud parents to five dogs, each with their own unique personality.
I invite you to come and experience our exceptional dental care at Smyrna Family Dentistry. You can check out our patient reviews to see what others have to say about us. It would be an honor to have you as a patient and to serve you and your family’s dental needs.
Thank you for considering Smyrna Family Dentistry, and we hope to see you soon.
Best regards,
DR. BRANDON VILLAR DMDDear readers,
I am truly excited to share with you the focus of our August issue: kids and pets. This topic holds a special place in my heart, as I have personally witnessed the incredible impact that children and animals can have on our lives.
Children are more than just the promise of a brighter tomorrow; they form the very foundation on which our society stands. Their innocence, inquisitiveness, and limitless potential hold the power to shape the world in extraordinary ways beyond our imagination. In this issue, we proudly celebrate the remarkable achievements of children in the Smyrna Vinings area, recognizing their immense value and contributions.
Furthermore, we mustn't overlook the profound role that pets play in our lives. The unique companionship they offer can be a truly transformative experience for both children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love and offer us the opportunity to learn, grow, and acquire essential life skills within a nurturing environment. The bond between children and their furry or feathered friends is something truly special, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.
Personally, I will always treasure the memories of my dogs, Cowboy and Ruby. They were like my own children before I started a family, and they taught me invaluable lessons about love, responsibility, and the precious connection between humans and animals.
While children and pets bring immeasurable joy, it is crucial to remember that they rely on us. Our care, attention, and intentional efforts shape their growth and define the individuals they become. It is my sincere hope that this issue will inspire you to go the extra mile for the children and pets in your life this month.
With warmest regards,

More than 25 years ago, Jim Anderson relocated to Cobb County with his wife, Trish, in search of an exceptional environment to raise their four children, ensuring their academic and social development. Cobb County has certainly lived up to their expectations! As his children grew up and achieved success, Jim realized the importance of community involvement, particularly the superior academics and athletics offered in the area, and he founded a unique enterprise called Making College Worth It.
The establishment of Making College Worth It arose from Jim’s firsthand experiences. A short-lived career in financial planning and the college research process for his eldest child ignited his passion for helping families navigate the complexities of college planning. Faced with limited local resources to address the crucial aspect of college costs, Jim developed extensive knowledge and decided to start a business that would assist others in avoiding the challenges of contemporary college planning.
As a parent himself, Jim recognizes that college planning goes beyond merely being accepted into a college. He is committed to identifying the right college that offers the appropriate major options, a suitable price point, and foundational skills necessary for the student’s future career. Jim coaches families to define these end goals, ensuring that the college experience is truly worth it.
HOW JIM ANDERSON HELPS FAMILIES FIND THE RIGHT COLLEGE FOR THEIR CHILD
The Making College Worth It experience begins with a thorough understanding of the family’s academic and financial situation. Through personalized questionnaires, Jim delves into the student’s aspirations and identifies potential career opportunities. From there, he constructs a tailored roadmap that distinguishes the desired majors and identifies colleges that align with the student’s ambitions. Throughout the process, Jim maintains open lines of communication, refining the plan based on the student’s research and providing guidance on college applications and financial aid.
What makes Jim’s services exceptional is his steadfast commitment to the success of his clients even after they enter college. He offers ongoing support by discussing course selection, ensuring that students acquire the specific skills and knowledge required for their chosen career path. This comprehensive approach ensures that every step is taken to make the college experience truly valuable.
In the pursuit of higher education, Jim Anderson’s Making College Worth

Education is our society’s foundation, shaping future generations’ minds and aspirations. In our community, six local schools are fostering academic growth, personal development, and a deep sense of pride among their students. We had the privilege of interviewing exceptional students who shared their heartfelt experiences, unforgettable moments, and the unique qualities that set their respective schools apart. These insights provide a glimpse into the rich tapestry of local educational excellence and the immense pride these students have for their schools.
Taylor Whitaker is eagerly anticipating her 8th-grade year at Covenant Christian School, where she takes pride in her school’s unique approach to education that combines religious teachings with core subjects like math, grammar, and science. At Covenant, she’s learned how foundational skills align with faith, and she’s excited to continue to build on her knowledge. Taylor credits the school’s focus on teaching World History from a Biblical perspective for offering her a broader understanding of different cultures and times. She is confident that these opportunities have made her a better student and will continue to impact her future education positively.
Taylor is particularly proud of her growth as a communicator, thanks to her participation in activities like Speech Meets and Spelling Bees. She fondly recalls her participation in the seventh-grade Greek Tragedy Contest, where she played the role of Antigone, and the process of studying lines, creating a costume, and rehearsing the scene. She believes that these activities have helped her develop into a well-rounded student, ready to take on new challenges.
As she enters her final year at Covenant Christian School, Taylor is enthusiastic about the challenges that lie ahead. She believes that the school’s commitment to classical education and the dedication of its exceptional teachers have prepared her to face the future with confidence. She is confident that this year will showcase the true value of her education and is looking forward to continuing to grow as a student.
We are grateful to these students for sharing their stories with us. Their words offer a powerful testament to the power of education and the importance of creating truly student-centered schools.
Avery Graham, a proud member of Campbell High School’s Class of 2025, believes that one of the standout qualities of her school is the strong school spirit and the sense of pride exhibited by the students across various areas such as sports, clubs, and academics.
Avery recalls a particularly memorable experience during the recent soccer season. The Campbell Girls Varsity Soccer team achieved an impressive feat by reaching the Final Four for the first time in the school’s history. Avery takes pride in being part of this historic team and cherishes the support they received from their classmates, who came out in large numbers to cheer them on.
To foster a sense of community among students, Campbell High School offers a wide range of clubs catering to different interests and passions. This inclusive approach ensures that every student can find a club that resonates with them, promoting a diverse and welcoming environment. Also, events like sporting events, spirit nights, football pep rallies, and dances play a significant role in bringing the student body together and strengthening the sense of community within the school.
Looking ahead to her junior year, Avery is excited about the fresh start and the opportunities it will bring. She eagerly anticipates spending time with friends daily and attending football games this fall.
Jacob Manginelli, a rising freshman at The Stonehaven School, is excited about the start of the new school year. He believes that one of the key aspects that distinguishes Stonehaven from other schools is the close relationships students can foster with their teachers. Unlike public schools with larger class sizes, Stonehaven’s smaller atmosphere allows for a more intimate connection between students and teachers. Jacob appreciates the fact that he will have the same teachers throughout his time at Stonehaven’s upper school, enabling them to genuinely care for and invest in his education and personal growth.
Stonehaven’s House Program is another tradition that contributes to the students’ pride in their school. Upon entering Stonehaven, students are sorted into one of four houses: Cambridge, Oxford, St. Andrews, or Trinity. Each house is assigned specific colors, a mascot, and a virtue. Throughout the year, the houses engage in friendly competition, aiming to prove their strength and unity. This program not only fosters a sense of camaraderie among housemates but also promotes a strong community spirit among all students.
As Jacob looks ahead to the upcoming school year, he is most excited about reuniting with his friends. He feels his classmates are like an extended family, and the school itself feels like home. The combination of a supportive social environment, challenging academics, and a sense of belonging makes him eager to return to class.
Sarah Caldwell, a rising 8th grader at St. Benedict’s Episcopal Day School, says it’s the people at her school who make her truly grateful to be a student there. Both teachers and students are incredibly welcoming. Each morning during carpool, the teachers go the extra mile to make it a fun experience, wearing silly hats and other playful accessories to greet the students. It’s these small gestures that create a sense of joy and belonging within the school community.
Sarah’s pride in her school is further strengthened by a specific program called Bee Buddies. This unique initiative pairs older students with younger ones, allowing them to form meaningful relationships and build connections across grade levels.
Sarah recalls a special chapel service where she and her Bee Buddy from 3rd grade participated in a pin swap. This act symbolized the mentorship role she held as a 7th grader, instilling a sense of pride and accomplishment in her school’s commitment to fostering supportive relationships among its students.
Looking ahead to the new school year, Sarah is eager to reconnect with her friends and teachers and participate in exciting projects. She also anticipates the upcoming spring season when she can join the St. Benedict’s track team.

As Finn McQuade enters 8th grade at Campbell Middle School, he takes pride in attending the only middle school in Cobb County with a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program. The program includes a Spanish Literature class and a Social Studies class taught in Spanish every year, which helps Finn improve his language skills and also exposes him to diverse cultures and perspectives. Finn is also proud of being part of an International Baccalaureate (IB) middle school, where critical thinking, global awareness, and community involvement are emphasized, preparing him for future academic pursuits.
Finn enjoys participating in Fresh Air Friday, a monthly event that allows students to enjoy recreational activities and socialize outside the classroom. He also finds fulfillment in being part of WYLD Life, a monthly Christian-based club where students engage in games and Bible studies, fostering fellowship and spiritual growth. Moreover, Finn appreciates the Sources of Strength program, which is a group of elected students who are trained to provide support to their peers during challenging times.
As the upcoming school year approaches, Finn is particularly thrilled about earning his 3rd language high school credit through the DLI program, which demonstrates his commitment and progress in language learning. He also eagerly awaits the opportunity to travel to Puerto Rico with his DLI classmates during Winter Break. Finally, Finn is excited about completing middle school and embarking on his next academic chapter in high school.
Rising senior, Riess Estep firmly believes that attending Whitefield Academy provides her with an exceptional education that will equip her for college and beyond. The school’s solid focus on academics and challenging coursework instills a strong sense of pride in students. The Whitefield faculty and staff are dedicated to ensuring that every student achieves their full potential and is prepared for success beyond the school walls.
A standout experience for Riess is the Friday night football games, where the entire student body comes together to support the team. Whether they win or lose, what truly matters is the feeling of camaraderie and togetherness that arises from rallying behind their school. This is a fundamental part of being part of the Whitefield community: supporting one another and taking pride in the school’s accomplishments.
As the new school year approaches, Riess eagerly awaits the adventures that come with being a senior at Whitefield Academy. The senior retreat offers a chance to bond with classmates and create unforgettable memories. Another highlight is “j-term” (January Term), a special program that provides opportunities like internships, travel, missions, and local service projects. However, the most exciting event for Riess is undoubtedly graduation day, when she’ll end her journey at Whitefield and begin a new chapter in her life.

As a biracial private practice owner who passes as white, I have a unique perspective on the importance of serving communities that are often systemically under-served and offering equitable employment to a diverse group of counselors.
Being the child of an immigrant has taught me the importance of understanding and addressing systemic issues that perpetuate inequities particularly in access to mental health services. I’ve also witnessed, first-hand the rare inspiration of those who outrage the system with their success and beating the odds.
It is my mission to make a difference in this field, and leave a legacy of altruism for my children to follow. I recognize that I hold a certain level of privilege that comes with that identity. However, I also know that this privilege does not make me immune to my responsibilities of addressing and dismantling racism and discrimination that people of color face.
It is because of this understanding that I am committed to creating a safe space for individuals from all walks of life to seek the help they need.
One of the considerations I have had to make as a private practice owner is ensuring that my team of counselors reflects the diversity of the clients we serve. It is not enough to simply say that we serve all communities if our team does not have a diverse range of experiences and perspectives. It is my great honor and responsibility to actively seek out and hire counselors who come from different
racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds to ensure that we can provide culturally responsive care to all of our clients.
Additionally, I have had to be intentional about the location of my practice. I understand that access to mental health services can be limited for some communities due to systemic issues such as transportation, cost, and location. By choosing to locate my practice in a more diverse and accessible area, I am able to better serve those who may not have had access to care otherwise.
There are also consequences to the choices I have made as a private practice owner. Being intentional about hiring a diverse team and serving marginalized communities may not be as profitable as catering to a more homogenous demographic. However, the satisfaction that comes from knowing that I am making a difference in the lives of those who have historically been underserved is far more important to me than any financial gain.
As a mother, I am also aware of the importance of leaving a legacy of altruism for my children to follow. I want them to understand the importance of using their privilege for good and advocating for those who may not have a voice. By modeling this behavior in my career and daily life, I hope to instill a sense of responsibility and compassion in my children that they will carry with them throughout their lives.
My mission is to serve the beautiful range of this community and offer equitable employment to a diverse group of counselors. I understand the considerations and consequences of this career choice, but the satisfaction that comes from knowing I am making a difference in the lives of those who have been historically underserved far outweighs any financial gain. It is my hope that by leaving a legacy of altruism for my children, I love to know that I am contributing to a brighter future where all individuals have access to the mental health services they need.

The Smyrna Vinings area is known for its strong sense of community and dedication to supporting its youth. Within this energetic community, one establishment stands out for its commitment to both sports and education: Big Bear Sports. Owned by Tracey and Bearin Santos, Big Bear Sports offers a unique indoor training facility that has become a hub for athletes and students alike.
Tracey and Bearin’s connection to the Smyrna Vinings area runs deep. Tracey moved to Smyrna in 1992 and has been actively involved in various community organizations, including serving as PTA President at King Springs Elementary and Griffin Middle School. Bearin, after completing his Army Ranger Service and Commercial Dive School, made Smyrna his home in 2003. Their dedication to serving the community led them to support youth sports and education through their involvement in Smyrna Little League, Campbell High School, other local schools, and various youth organizations.
After immersing themselves in the Smyrna Little League community with their son, Tracey and Bearin identified a pressing need for a quality indoor baseball and softball training facility. Determined to fill this void, they took matters into their own hands and opened Big Bear Sports (BBS) in 2020.
Since its inception, BBS has excelled in providing fully equipped training facilities that meet the highest standards. The facility boasts a comprehensive range of equipment, including pitching machines and training aids, designed to enhance skills and foster growth. The meticulously maintained, climate-controlled space features fully turfed surfaces and is ADA-compliant, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all athletes.
Recognizing the importance of local sports organizations, BBS extends discounts to long-standing organizations such as Smyrna Little League and Rhyne Park. By forging partnerships and nurturing relationships, BBS actively contributes to the growth and development of these organizations, ensuring that youth sports remain accessible to all.
Whether rain clouds loom or athletes crave extra practice sessions, Big Bear Sports stands ready to empower local athletes, foster growth, and support the youth of Smyrna Vinings. The Santos family’s commitment to youth sports and education shines brightly through their enduring support for the community.

In the world of children’s entertainment, there is a magical company that goes above and beyond to make dreams come true. Helen Medlin Princess Parties, led by the passionate and talented Helen Medlin, aims to create enchanting experiences for young ones, leaving a lasting impression on their hearts and memories.
Helen Medlin, a firm believer in fairytales and all things sparkly, grew up in Smyrna, and discovered her love for singing before she could speak and indulged in dress-up games before taking her first steps. After graduating from Campbell High School, Helen dove headfirst into the children’s entertainment industry, dedicating herself to the art of princess-ing.
With seven years of experience and over a thousand events under her tiara, Helen still exudes the same enthusiasm she had when she first embarked on this magical journey. Her passion lies not only in getting into character and singing her heart out but also in teaching children valuable life lessons through the enchanting world of fairytales. Helen says “we bring more to the party than storytelling and face paint, (but we do that too!) We uphold our duty as role models and heroes to not only entertain and let children be little, but to reinforce the powerful lessons fairytales teach us; to be kind, selfless, charitable, and brave. Our professionally trained performers command the attention of the room and capture hearts in the process.”
Parents can rest assured knowing that Helen Medlin Princess Parties is a company that is 100% kid-approved. With their services, the pressure is taken off Mom and Dad, who can sit back and relax, knowing that their children are in the best hands. Contact Helen at www.atlprincess.com or (404) 990-2222.
