Eat good, feel good, and do good with Good Kitchen Smyrna! Like their first location, Good Kitchen + Market in Marietta, the new Good Kitchen Smyrna serves clean, green, simple food that is good to stay, good to go, and good for you. Every dish is prepared fresh from nutrient-dense, clean, locally sourced ingredients and served in a warm, welcoming setting. You’ll feel right at home the moment you walk in the door. They believe you can eat, drink, and be healthy – while doing also good! This cozy casual spot is dedicated to fighting childhood cancer by providing resources to families battling cancer, partnering with

the local Mighty Millie Foundation, and hosting fundraising events throughout the year. Following the third anniversary of Good Kitchen + Market in Marietta, Good Kitchen Smyrna opened in November 2022 in Village Green in Smyrna. They encourage guests to think of this location as the “younger, fun, and spunkier sister” of the Marietta location. The space is beautiful, bright, and airy, with a retro color scheme reflected in the vibrant murals, cozy booths, and rattan accents. Good Kitchen is also available for small and mid-size events, offering both in-house and off-site catering. Think of Good Kitchen as your everyday brunch spot. From avocado toast to gluten-free pancakes to various breakfast bowls, breakfast is ready when you are, even if you hit the snooze button. In the mood for lunch? A curated selection of salads, bowls, burgers, sandwiches, and wraps are sure to satisfy every palate. Good Kitchen is great for a weekend date night, with a selection of ‘good bites’ like charcuterie boards, avocado nachos, and a collection of organic wine, local beer and cider, and craft cocktails. Good Kitchen also offers gluten-free, sugar-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. When my husband and I moved to the area, Good Kitchen was the first restaurant we visited. We love supporting local restaurants, especially ones like Good Kitchen, who serve locally sourced organic options and accommodate allergies and dietary restrictions. We also found a personal connection with the restaurant and their mission, since we have numerous family members who are battling cancer, which inspired our own journey to learn more about the impact of nutrition on our health. Good Kitchen has quickly become one of our local favorites. During our most recent visit, we sampled the seasonal gluten-free pancakes and the Carnivore Bowl, which were phenomenal!

I recently met with Peter and Veronica Tompkins, the owners of Good Kitchen. They are the most welcoming couple, which radiates through both their restaurants. They have a touching story, but their response to what life has dealt them is truly inspiring. After Veronica’s late-stage cancer battle, she developed a menu based on her own efforts to regain her health to serve as the foundation for Good Kitchen. “We have seen firsthand the effects of poor nutrition on our own health and the health of loved ones. We have learned how nutrient-dense food can help people heal and prevent disease. We have strengthened our immune systems after cancer treatments and surgery. Now that we know what we know, we believe in sharing what we have learned… how to turn around health situations, one bite, one sip at a time. Good just gives us a greater platform for our passion - helping people eat better, heal their bodies, and strengthen their immune systems.” Good Kitchen also has a very special place in their hearts for children battling cancer. Good Kitchen’s Courageous Kids & Caregivers program is dedicated to Veronica and Peter’s nephew, Ryan, who courageously battled neuroblastoma over fifteen years ago. The program works to provide resources like nutritional counseling and juicers to families faced with the inconceivable. Veronica also shared the inspiration behind Good Kitchen’s ‘Mighty Millie Rainbow Corners,’ a special space dedicated to ‘Mighty Millie’ Mracek, where children CONTINUED >

can find books and puzzles and “experience small moments of big joy.” You can read Millie’s story and learn more about the Mighty Millie Foundation at mightymillie.org. In addition to the Courageous Kids & Caregivers Program and the ‘Mighty Millie Rainbow Corners,’ Veronica and Peter were inspired to do more. “We offer Good Pops with all donations going directly back to the Mighty Millie Foundation to help provide popsicles to children undergoing treatment in Children’s Hospitals as well as awareness and research.” Good Kitchen also hosts events and fundraisers throughout the year to continue the fight against childhood cancer. She owns the Vinings location of Restore Hyper Wellness, which opened in August 2020 in Vinings Jubilee. Ali is a Nurse Practitioner with a passion for integrative health and medicine and chose to open Restore in Vinings Jubilee, since it was a well-established shopping center offering a classic small-town feel with a connection to the community. She has lived in Smyrna for 9 years with her husband and her two children, and expressed how she and her family value having deep roots within the community. She shared how Restore partners with local schools, hosts monthly and quarterly events partnering with local businesses, and provides discounts for middle and high school students, first responders, nurses, military, and teachers. Restore is focused on health, wellness and beauty, providing over 1500 services a month to a full spectrum of clients from middle school students to professional athletes. Clients of all ages and all walks of life come to Restore with a variety of goals, whether it’s preventative anti-aging treatment, lessening

discomfort from chronic illness, or simple treatment for a sprained ankle. The goal of Restore is to create a customized treatment plan for each client based on their goals and needs. COINCIDENCE, OR CONNECTIONS? Meet Jamaica and Len, owners of The Healing Environment in Smryna

WHO ARE JAMAICA AND LEN? Jamaica McDaniel and Len Gaffney are the owners of The Healing Environment Wellness Center in Smyrna. They are a dynamic couple, each completely different but complementary to one another, the epitome of the saying ‘yin to yang.’ Their strong sense of individual purpose, their love for one another, and their desire to promote wellness, growth, and purpose in themselves and others radiates clearly.

HOW DID YOU MEET? Jamaica and Len have a beautiful love story filled with what some might find coincidence, but they find meaningful connections. Both from Ohio, they attended high school together. Len was the reserved, studious type, while Jamaica was the popular prom queen. He had a crush on her, but never thought he had a chance. After high school graduation, they parted ways. Jamaica moved to New York and pursued modeling while honing her personal spiritual development. Len enlisted in the Air Force and pursued a career in the technology industry, but always felt something was missing. During this time, he embarked upon his own journey of spiritual development.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TOGETHER? After thirty years of living separate lives, Jamaica and Len reunited at their high school reunion. Len flew in with the intention of going to the reunion solely to see Jamaica. She felt an urging to go to the reunion that night, even though she had no desire to attend, since she was caring for her family during a difficult time, but chose to go anyway. She sat at the bar wondering why she felt so called to be there, but when Len walked in, she knew. They talked the entire evening until the event was over, and both say they have no recollection of anyone else being in the room. Len proposed that night and Jamaica accepted. Six months later they were married and embarked on their journey together, which eventually led them to the Atlanta area. WHAT IS THE HEALING ENVIRONMENT? Jamaica had a lifelong dream of creating a wellness center to help and connect others who are interested in health, wellness, and spiritual development, and The Healing Environment offers just that. Jamaica left her corporate job in August 2021 to pursue her dream, and the Healing Environment opened in January 2022. Len joined her full time one year later in August 2022. Services include healing and therapeutic massage, facials, waxing, sound therapy, reiki, reflexology, iridology, foot zone therapy, yoga, tai chi, and more. They also host wellness markets and events for the community to experience the center. The Healing Environment celebrates one year of business this month and hopes to expand their services while continuing to offer a peaceful, welcoming environment of healing and wellness to the community.

Pesto is a classic Italian sauce that originated in Genoa, Italy and only requires a few fresh ingredients. This simple sauce is something anyone can add to their repertoire and elevates even the most basic of pasta dishes. Add chicken or shrimp for a delicious meal everyone is sure to enjoy!

Bruschetta is a classic and elegant Italian appetizer that anyone can make. The secret to this iconic recipe is fresh and high-quality ingredients. Roma tomatoes are firmer and less juicy than other tomato varieties, which makes them perfect for dicing. Fresh basil, garlic, and balsamic vinegar add a rich layer of flavor. Using the best quality extra virgin olive oil elevates this recipe, so the only seasonings you need are the classics: salt and pepper.

2 cups fresh basil leaves 1/2 cup freshly grated Romano or Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/3 cup walnuts 1 garlic clove 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

instructions: Rinse fresh basil leaves well and remove any stems. Add all ingredients except olive oil to a food processor. Blend well, while slowly adding in the olive oil. Toss your favorite pasta in the pesto and serve, or spread on slices of toasted french bread and enjoy!

1/4 cup olive oil 1 finely minced clove of garlic 6-8 Roma tomatoes, finely diced 1/4 cup fresh basil, sliced into ribbons 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar, add more to taste Salt and Pepper to taste 1 loaf ciabatta bread, sliced and toasted

instructions: Heat olive oil on medium heat; add in minced garlic and sauté until just golden, about one minute. Add garlic-infused oil to a large bowl and let cool. While the oil is cooling, chop tomatoes and basil. Add to olive oil mixture. Add balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper, then toss to coat. Caprese Salad is said to have originated on the Italian Isle of Capri. It captures the bright, fresh feel of warmer days, and it's the perfect addition to any meal!

6-8 Roma tomatoes thinly sliced Fresh mozzarella sliced in 1/4 inch slices Extra Virgin olive oil Balsamic Glaze Fresh Basil Salt & Pepper to taste

directions: Slice both the mozzarella and tomato about 1/4 inch thick, then add a touch of salt to the tomatoes, add the mozzarella on top, add one or two basil leaves on top. Drizzle extra virgin olive oil, pepper and balsamic glaze, and enjoy!
