The Joy of Giving Thanks: A Message of Appreciation Dear Readers, In this season of gratitude, we reflect on life's blessings, emphasizing the essence of Thanksgiving— expressing heartfelt appreciation, treasuring our dear ones, and engaging in meaningful acts of generosity. While ambition and accomplishments have their value, it is crucial to keep in mind the significance of being present, relishing the path we're on, and recognizing the people who stand by us. Authentic contentment comes from within and embracing our true selves. I'm deeply grateful for the many blessings I have been fortunate enough to receive. At the top of my list are my two sons, Charlie and Henry. They are my pride and joy, the source of endless love and laughter in my life. My friends and family occupy a special place in my heart, enriching my journey with love, understanding, and shared experiences. Their presence is a profound blessing. Good health, often taken for granted, is a daily reminder of my fortune, allowing me to wake up vibrant and strong. And then there's my community, Smyrna Vinings. It's more than just a place; it's a warm and welcoming family of neighbors who have made me feel at home from the moment I arrived. The sense of belonging and the support of this community mean the world to me. Looking ahead, I'm grateful not just for what I have, but for opportunities to share these blessings. Gratitude, like love, multiplies when shared, and I am eager to continue spreading the warmth and joy that my children, friends, family, good health, and my wonderful Smyrna Vinings community have bestowed upon me. A Local Hero Making a Difference in Smyrna

In every community, there are unsung heroes whose acts of kindness and dedication go unnoticed, but leave an indelible mark on the hearts of those they touch. In Smyrna, one such hero stands out—Officer Ashley Beard, a member of the Smyrna Police Department since August 2021. Officer Beard’s commitment to her community and her remarkable acts of kindness have earned her the title of a local hero. The story of Officer Beard’s heroic deed first came to light a few months ago when she was patrolling near Rose Garden Park. She noticed a group of teenagers playing basketball, and her keen eye caught the attention of one young boy whose sneakers were in deplorable condition. Instead of turning a blind eye, Officer Beard decided to take action. Despite being on duty and unable to leave, she offered to purchase a new pair of sneakers for the teenager. Later, one of her co-workers witnessed her act of kindness while shopping at Dick’s Sporting Goods and shared it with the community. This good deed was not done for recognition or glory; it was simply an extension of her good-natured and caring personality. She doesn’t just wear the badge; she lives up to the values it represents. Officer Beard’s dedication to serving the community goes beyond this heartwarming incident. She actively participates in the Smyrna Police Department’s outreach events and is working towards becoming a Community Outreach Officer. Her goal is to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community, fostering trust and understanding. In addition to her notable actions, Officer Beard’s kindness extends beyond her official duties. During an incident in late September involving a business dispute, she discovered a despondent mother and her

son, stranded in Georgia, far from their home in New York. Despite her busy day, Officer Beard provided them with a home-cooked pasta lunch and snacks. Her empathy inspired her trainee and others to join in providing assistance, from drinks to arranging transportation. Her compassion created a chain reaction of generosity among those present, demonstrating the power of a single act of kindness to inspire others. Officer Beard’s journey in Smyrna hasn’t been without its challenges. She had limited driving experience when she arrived from New York, making the multifaceted demands of patrolling a new city a formidable task. However, she persevered and embraced the challenges, demonstrating her determination and adaptability. The community’s response to Officer Beard’s actions has been overwhelmingly positive. Her acts of kindness have not only improved morale within the department but have also strengthened the bond between law enforcement and the community they serve. As we celebrate local heroes like Officer Ashley Beard, we must remember that a simple thank you, a smile, or a handshake can make their day even better. The Smyrna Police Department offers numerous community engagement programs, allowing residents to interact with the dedicated men and women who serve and protect their city. The Smyrna Police Department is deeply committed to its community. These officers go beyond their duty schedules to make a difference, whether it’s by shopping for children, playing basketball, or offering a helping hand. Officer Beard’s story reminds us that heroes are not always found in capes but often in the hearts of those who genuinely care for their community.

In the city of Smyrna, Georgia, there’s a beautiful story unfolding - one of community, compassion, and unwavering support. It’s called “Support Smyrna,” and it’s a shining example of how a simple idea can transform into a beacon of hope for a city. Support Smyrna was born out of necessity during the dark days of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the world grappled with uncertainty, Smyrna residents faced their own challenges. People were scared, jobs were lost, and many couldn’t leave their homes, especially those who were immunocompromised. In the midst of this chaos, a visionary Smyrna resident proposed an idea: “Wouldn’t it be nice if we could create a program where citizens could help neighbors in need?” That idea, born in the early days of the pandemic, led to the creation of Support Smyrna. Its mission was clear: to provide essential support to those struggling in the community, particularly in the form of food assistance. The concept was simple yet powerful: donate $25, and you would receive a Support Smyrna yard sign to proudly display in your yard. The funds collected would be used to provide grocery store gift cards to those in need. When Support Smyrna first set out with this initiative, they ordered 50 signs, hoping to raise a few thousand dollars. What happened next was nothing short of remarkable. The Smyrna community rallied behind the cause with extraordinary generosity, ordering over 1,500 yard signs and raising a staggering $170,000, transforming Smyrna into a sea of support. CONTINUED >

With the pandemic’s eventual decline, the founders of Support Smyrna, Mayor Derek Norton and his wife Laura, recognized that this incredible outpouring of support shouldn’t wane. They took a significant step forward by establishing Support Smyrna as a 501c3 non-profit organization. This pivotal move allowed them to expand their mission beyond food assistance to include clothing, housing, and medicine. The organization has quickly become a vital part of the community’s fabric, connecting with various segments of Smyrna through school social workers, the American Legion for Veterans, senior centers, and the faith community. Through these connections, Support Smyrna has been able to provide critical assistance where it’s needed most. Stories of their impact abound, from providing heat and shelter to a family in dire need to offering crucial medicines to veterans and seniors. They’ve even gone as far as securing

noise-canceling headphones for an autistic child at Argyle Elementary School, ensuring a better learning experience. Support Smyrna has grown, evolved, and continues to thrive, touching lives in countless ways. Mayor Norton, who once knocked on 3,000 doors while campaigning, acknowledges that the organization has really opened his eyes to the needs within Smyrna itself. The organization’s reach extends to over 2,000 homeless children attending Cobb County Schools, with 1,000 of them coming from hotels or motels. Support Smyrna is there, offering help to those who need it most, right in their own backyard. This incredible organization operates on the goodwill of Smyrna residents and local businesses, relying on small-dollar donations that collectively make a significant impact. Every dollar contributed plays a vital role in providing assistance and resources to the community. As we look forward to the Mayor’s Second Annual Fall Classic to Support Smyrna on November 3, 2023, it’s a reminder that when a community comes together, incredible things happen. Golf, good times, and gift bags will all be part of the event, but the real treasure lies in the hearts of the people who make Support Smyrna what it is. Support Smyrna is a testament to the kindness and compassion that define Smyrna, Georgia. It’s proof that even in the darkest of times, the light of community can shine through. Within the Smyrna community, a heartwarming tradition has been unfolding for over two decades, bringing joy and holiday cheer to underprivileged children in the community. The “Shop with a Hero” program, a collaborative effort between the Smyrna Fire Department (SFD), Smyrna Police Department (SPD), and the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation (SPSF), has become a beacon of hope during the festive season. For over 20 years now, this program has been making a difference in the lives of children who need it the most. In 2008, the visionary Retired SFD Chief Acree laid the groundwork for an organization that would not only provide support to first responders but also serve the broader community. This inspiring vision materialized into the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation, which has since played a pivotal role in nurturing and expanding the “Shop with a Hero” program. Thanks to this collaboration between the SFD, the SPD, and the SPSF, countless children in need experience the magic of Christmas each year, as the program continues to shine as an example of compassion and unity in the community. Each year, Lt. Paul Burns of SFD and Denise Czarnik of SPSF kick-start the planning process in September. The police and fire departments play a crucial role, not only in providing transportation but also in

personally shopping with the children. It’s a labor of love for these first responders who often use their vacation time or even forego a day’s pay to make this day extra special. Identifying deserving participants is a critical step. SPSF, SPD, and SFD do not directly select the children. Instead, they collaborate with school counselors, who provide a list of 10 students per school who would greatly benefit from this magical experience, but no child in need is ever turned away. Last year, they shopped with 87 children, a testament to the program’s growing impact. The “Shop with a Hero” event day kicks off with children being picked up from their schools in the morning by a first responder (police officer/firefighter). They arrive at Walmart, where they are paired with a first responder, setting off on a shopping adventure. The children explore the store, picking out essentials, toys, and oftentimes items for their family members. At 11:00 am, everyone heads to a designated venue where they enjoy a festive lunch celebration. This is a cherished moment as they get to dine with their heroes, meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, and create memories that will last a lifetime. At 1:00 pm, the children return to school carrying not only gifts but also a meal kit that will provide a holiday dinner for their families. CONTINUED >

The program doesn’t just provide material gifts; it forges positive relationships between children and local law enforcement and first responders. It allows the children to see these heroes as caring individuals, fostering trust and goodwill within the community. For the children and their families, the impact of “Shop with a Hero” is immeasurable. It allows them to experience the holidays with the same joy and warmth as anyone else, with new clothing, coats, and toys, and a festive dinner to share. Returning to school after the holiday break with tales of their new possessions, they bring smiles and laughter to their peers. Local businesses, volunteers, and generous residents play a pivotal role in making this program a success. All funding comes from donations, with each child receiving $250 for essentials and toys, plus an additional $25 for a

holiday meal kit. The community’s generosity shines through, with local churches providing vans and food donations to help ease the logistical and financial burden of the program. The “Shop with a Hero” program aims to continue expanding its reach, with the goal of serving 100 children and eventually extending its support to middle school-aged kids. Individuals and organizations in the Smyrna community can make a difference by donating, volunteering, or offering their support. Mighty Millie Foundation In the world of childhood cancer, hope often takes center stage. For Claire and Nick Mracek, hope came in the form of their daughter, Millie, and her courageous battle against cancer. Tragically, Millie’s journey was cut short when she passed away in 2021 at the tender age of 3.5 years old. However, out of their grief and love for Millie, her parents established The Mighty Millie Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization with a resolute mission to make a difference in the lives of children battling cancer. Millie’s battle with cancer began in May 2020 when she was diagnosed with a rare

form of cancer called embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. Although initial aggressive treatment showed promise, the cancer eventually recurred and spread, presenting the Mracek family with an unimaginable challenge. Undeterred, they sought multiple medical opinions and pursued various treatments, but the options for Millie remained limited. She endured further rounds of radiation and chemotherapy, displaying unwavering courage and strength throughout her battle. Millie and her family fought valiantly for every precious moment they could share together.

ROBERT HARRISON GIVES SMYRNA, AND ITS ARTS COMMUNITY, MUCH TO BE GRATEFUL FOR.

At the end of a residential street across the train tracks from downtown Smyrna is an architectural anomaly for a neighborhood: an old Firehouse. After a storied history as the home of Engine #3 and an American Legion chapter, the building fell into disrepair under a blanket of kudzu – until Robert Harrison discovered it and was enchanted. A resident of Smyrna since 1997, Robert knew he wanted “a space that was large enough to host events – a clubhouse for the arts community.” And since 2015, as the official owner, restorer, and resident of the Old Smyrna Firehouse, he’s done just that. The space has hosted “everything from circus shows in the backyard, supper clubs, music concerts, theatrical performances, and everything in between,” says Robert. It has been a meeting space, a gallery, and an incubator for other artists to launch careers and businesses. “I knew I

wanted a space that I could share with others. And art events were some of the first things that we held here.” From the first thing he worked on in the house (the stove) to the most recent (a “front porch in the backyard”), the space is never static. “When I die, it will be finished. Until then, I have no idea.” Like his extraordinary home, Robert himself is a storied man. He’s a musician, a podcaster, and a metal sculptor primarily known for incorporating fire. But he’s also a tireless champion for the arts and local, living artists. He and artist Kristen Ramsey started Indie Arts Alliance, which is a thriving collective of local artists producing events and advocating for increased visibility, more opportunities, and more public art. “We’ve started it, but there’s a long way to go.” “Seek out art events. We publicize them, but obviously it’s hard to get the message to every single person in Smyrna. Take a minute and look for the events because they are happening there are weekly events within a 10-minute drive of Smyrna – and go support those local artists. Buy their work. Artists need to eat, and they deserve to be able to earn a living from their art.” He gives back to the arts because of all the things the arts have given to him. “I remember the first time I saw large scale art and sculptures – the feeling of awe and wonderment that something so large was created solely as art – and I think I’ve always tried to turn around and give that experience back to other people. To recreate that first feeling of wonderment at seeing art created by people you don’t normally see in galleries.”

It took Robert some time to accept that he himself is an artist. A fateful invitation to an art event over a decade ago served as the “creative permission slip” he needed “to go big,” and “the creative energy that was stirred up with that experience has lasted to this day.” “I think of the Firehouse as my largest work of art. It is made up of individual pieces of art, but I view it as one giant sculpture and it’s always evolving - borderline performance art on occasions - with the added fun of the occasional pyrotechnic sculpture.” In a house that is a living work of art filled with notable features, one element stands out as Robert’s favorite: the kitchen sink. It came from his grandparents’ backyard in Florida, where it sat next to the garden for over 50 years. “I made mudpies in it when I was three years old. I was able to retrieve that from their house when I moved into the Firehouse and incorporate that into the kitchen.” It beautifully encapsulates Robert: a love of legacy, the convergence of the mechanical and the sentimental, and the ability to see art in just about anything.

I’m Sarah Bowman of Sarah Bowman Spaces, and as an interior design professional, I’m happy to share my insights on what elements make for the perfect guest room. Whether you’re hosting family, friends, or even renting out your space, these expert tips will help you design a guest room that leaves a lasting impression. A guest room should be an extension of your personal style while incorporating functional elements that allow your guests to unwind. I emphasize that principles of balance, function, and flow are crucial in designing the perfect guest room, just as in any other room of your home. Selecting the right color palette is essential for creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. I recommend choosing colors that complement the rest of your home’s decor. Warm, darker colors create a sense of coziness, while light, organic tones can help your guests start their day in a fresh and cheerful mood. The bed is the focal point of any guest room, and I advise investing in a comfortable mattress and quality bedding to ensure your guests sleep well. Nightstands should have enough space for a lamp and chargers, and a bench at the foot of the bed allows guests to unpack their suitcases. Additional essential furniture includes a side chair, desk, console, and table lamp for a private work area. Don’t forget to provide fluffy pillows, blackout curtains, a full-length mirror, extra blankets, a fan, fresh flowers, an essential oil diffuser, and a carafe of water to enhance the guest’s experience. Lighting is crucial for setting the right mood in a guest room. I recommend layered lighting, including ambient, task, and accent lighting. Bedside table lamps

with switches near the door can eliminate the need for overhead lighting, while sconces on both sides of the bed free up space on the nightstands. Balancing functionality with aesthetics is key when incorporating storage into the guest room. I suggest providing a few dresser drawers and hanging space in the closet for short stays. Utilizing under bed storage for your personal items can free up closet space for your guests. I suggest saving premium bedding brands for the primary bedroom and opting for quality bedding from brands like Frontgate, Parachute, Annie Selke, and Brooklinen for the guest room. These brands offer a range of colors, patterns, and materials to create a luxurious bed. Adding personal touches to the guest room can make your visitors feel special. Art is a personal accessory that communicates who you are. Frame meaningful items like children’s drawings, favorite photographs, or art book pages to resonate with your guests. For smaller guest rooms, I suggest a daybed with a trundle to save space. Floating nightstands and vertical storage options like hooks and shelves can help maximize the room’s layout. Incorporate charging stations or power strips on both sides of the bed to accommodate guests’ electronic devices and make their stay more convenient. Adding plants or greenery to the guest room can create a natural and soothing atmosphere. Not only do plants bring visual interest, but they also help improve air quality. Connected guest bathrooms should be wellequipped. I recommend placing guest towels on the bed for convenience. For seniors, ensure accessibility, good lighting, and reduced tripping hazards. Families with children may require additional sleeping options like twin blow-up beds or a pack and play, and childproofing measures.

I encourage experimenting and having fun with your guest room design. I suggest trends like wainscoting to the ceiling, color drenching (painting walls, trim, and ceilings the same color), and even wallpapering the ceiling to create a fresh and modern guest room. Incorporating these expert tips and ideas will help you design a perfect guest room that offers comfort, style, and a warm welcome to your guests. this year’s kids’ table truly memorable, we sat down with Amberly Hood, owner of Studio 23 in Smyrna, a fine art studio known for its creative and engaging classes for students of all ages. Amberly shared her expert tips on designing a fun and engaging kids’ table for Thanksgiving. Start by considering the tableware. Using fun and durable options like wheat straw plates or non-toxic, colorful dishes can add an exciting touch to the kids’ table. Vibrant tableware not only appeals to children but also ensures safety during their mealtime adventures. Decorating the kids’ table is a chance to infuse excitement into the Thanksgiving atmosphere. A winning approach is to blend pre-made decorations with DIY elements that kids can create themselves. This collaborative effort allows children to actively participate in shaping the look and feel of their special space. To capture the essence of Thanksgiving, focus on the color palette. Incorporate warm shades of red, orange, yellow, and muted greens. Use fall leaves, pumpkins, and apples as design elements, either through actual items or patterns. This will evoke the spirit of the season and create a festive ambiance. To keep kids entertained at the table, Amberly suggests providing age-appropriate DIY projects. She loves using brown paper as a table covering, and encouraging kids to draw with non-toxic art supplies like crayons, markers, and watercolor pens. From Pennington’s Pen: Have you ever heard of an African plant called sweet berry? If a plant has a superpower, I think it is this one. It has earned its name because it can make the sourest of foods taste sweet. If the sweet berry’s power could be applied to life’s circumstances, wouldn’t that be wonderful? I felt like I needed it when my daughter, who was three years old at the time, was hospitalized with a painful autoimmune illness. The doctors had to stick her with an IV needle to administer some medicine that she really needed, and I remember the way she looked at me. “Daddy, they are hurting me. Please make them stop.” I felt so helpless. I knew that she needed the medicine, and I wanted to help her to understand. Yet, my explanation wouldn’t have made much sense to her. I hated that feeling. When you read through the Bible, you discover that the people of God often look to their heavenly Father the way that my little girl looked at me. We don’t understand the way that God is working. And yet, in 1

Thessalonians 5:18, God calls us to trust Him and give thanks to Him in every circumstance. How can we do this when times are tough? Jesus is our sweet berry. Consider the cross. The One with the power of God also has the power to save. There is no circumstance He has not faced. There is no adversity that He has not overcome. When we remember the cross, even when we don’t understand, we can know that the One to whom we look is the one who promises that suffering is never wasted. Let this truth captivate you this Thanksgiving season. Thankfulness is not a response to our circumstances, but a response to God, who is always good.
