LIFESTYLE LETTER

DECEMBER 2020 PUBLISHER

Arthur McCoy | arthur.mccoy@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR

Christmas is finally here! Make someone smile! THIS YEAR WAS PRETTY TOUGH BUT WE MUST THINK OF THINGS TO BE THANKFUL FOR. Most of you know that I find the best in any and everything. I am a very positive person. I don't see people as a race, we are all one race, the human race. I view things from a very different perspective. You will never hear me saying "Thank God it's Friday", because I live as everyday is Friday. Surround yourselves with positivity and try not to stress. What you listen to on the radio, see on television and what you hear from the people around all feeds your spirit. Whatever you nourish will grow and whatever you starve will die. Let this be a Christmas holiday to remember. Spend time doing whatever makes you most

happy. My family and I put up our holiday decorations early just to enjoy the holiday a bit longer. I make sure that my wife and kids feel appreciated so much on a daily basis that their birthdays and holidays are almost like a normal day. With that being said my kids know that it is better to give than receive so they are always looking to bless someone. 'Tis the season to give. I challenge you today to call that loved one that you haven't spoken to in a while or an old friend that deserves a call and let them know how you feel. Do not hold grudges, it is not worth the toll on your health. Repair relationships that were broken, forgive people who may have hurt you. Go into the new year fresh and plan your resolution ahead and most importantly stick with it. It is never too late to start

TOP 10 THINGS TO KNOW FOR A HEALTHY SMILE 10. KEEP IT SIMPLE. Expensive dental products may help, but proper hygiene techniques and habits are paramount!

9. FOOD CHOICES ARE CRITICAL. Hard or sticky sugary foods are the most common contributors to tooth decay.

8. BIOLOGY MATTERS. Just like any other part of the human body, some of us are genetically more prone to issues like cavities and gum disease.

7. SECRET’S OUT! Plaque is really a mixture of germs, old sugary foods and acidic germ waste. Yep, germ poo is destroying teeth every day.

6. FLOSS FIRST (AND NOT THE DANCE!). Nothing can adequately replace actually getting the string between our teeth. If we floss first, we have a better chance to be more effective in our routine.

5. CONSISTENCY IS KEY. Invest 2 minutes every morning and 2 minutes before bed.

4. PREVENTION IS LESS EXPENSIVE. Like most things in life, allowing for problems to persist makes it harder to restore and repair. It’s true for home repair, relationships, education and….TEETH!

3. ACCESS AND ANGLES. When brushing your teeth or your children’s teeth, we must create better access by moving our lips and cheeks out of way. Then gently brush with the bristles angled along the gum line. This adjustment in technique can be a real smile saver.

2. YES, PROFESSIONAL DENTAL VISITS ARE NECESSARY. Waiting until something hurts usually ends up being a bigger problem. If you don’t trust your dental team, it’s ok to get second opinions.

1. IT’S COMPLICATED. Fluoride itself is not harmful but if used incorrectly, it could possibly relate to health problems. When used properly, in can be a great benefit for your teeth. Please supervise brushing to ensure correct spitting and amount of toothpaste through elementary grade years.

BONUS: WHITER IS NOT BETTER. Kids are increasingly dissatisfied with their natural teeth color and are asking for bleaching products. This is related to trends in adult dentistry and the manufactured images they see on mass media. Teeth color has joined weight, height, and hair in a long list of body image insecurities.

Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle | December 2020

WHEN SOMEONE YOU LOVE IS SICK, DON’T YOU WISH YOU HAD A MAGIC WAND TO CAST OUT THE PAIN, DISMISS THE GERMS FOREVER AND BANISH THE BAD NEWS? When 13-year old Mary Tipton Carter of Brookhaven was at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, she could have used a magic wand during her treatment for ovarian cancer. Instead, she stepped into the role of fairy godmother, constructing wands out of pipe cleaners, visiting other children who were sick, granting them a bit of hope with their own magic wand. Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance executive director Doug Barron of Smyrna heard about the young ovarian cancer patient at CHOA and went for a visit. From there, the two developed a unique friendship and productive collaboration. MT is a huge Harry Potter fan and convinced Doug if they were going to be friends, he would have to read the entire Harry Potter series. So he did! While reading, Doug noticed a common element in all of the stories. Every character possessed a wand that would help them in times of need and conflict. An amateur woodworker, Doug decided to design and craft a magic want for MT. He turned to “Nana’s Tree,” the Japanese Maple that his children planted when their Grandmother passed away from ovarian cancer in 2007 and chose a branch to work with. “The first wand I made was very special,” says Doug. “The handle and wand separate exposing a secret compartment that can hold a special wish or spell.” Thus the name, “MT’s Wizardly Wands with Get Well Spells.” Now, an ovarian cancer survivor, MT creates gift bags for children being treated at the AFLAC Cancer Center Inpatient Unit at CHOA - Scottish Rite with information about these special wands that are then distributed by the AFLAC Donations Coordinator. “MT hopes the wands may bring some magic, a smile, and some happiness into their lives,” says Doug. Together, Doug and MT have created a magical friendship that proves caring and creativity can cast spells that last a lifetime. GAOvarianCancer.org

WHEN GEEGEE WALTERS RETIRED AFTER A 25 YEAR CAREER, MOST RECENTLY AS A SENIOR IT SPECIALIST WITH GE CAPITAL, SHE FELT THE PULL TO USE HER SKILLS FOR GOOD. “I wanted to give back to my community, offer my skills in an area that needed me and maybe meet new people,” she says. GeeGee and Jerry Walters have lived in Smyrna since 1992. “I started with the Friends of Smyrna Library by doing membership and other opportunities came up that gave me the chance to get even more involved.” GeeGee is an artist, and crafts lovely holiday home decor, raising money for Friends of Smyrna Library. “When it came time for the fundraising, I showed them my craft skills and that’s how it all began - it has been so much fun and rewarding ever since.” She makes centerpieces, arrangments for the mantle, wreaths and swags for the door. She uses ornaments, bright ribbons, greens, silk flowers, tiny embellishments and lots of love to make her decorative holiday statements. They are each one of a kind! GeeGee will be taking special orders this year. Email her at marleymay53@gmail.com and support the Smyrna Library. On December 1, join GeeGee and the entire board for The Big Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, with Santa and lots of holiday festivities to enjoy. Catch the spirit of the season and delight in choral performances by local schools, community and church groups. Don’t miss the annual parade with Santa and the very special way he lights the giant Christmas Tree in Smyrna’s downtown, kicking off the holiday season of lights in downtown Smyrna on the Village Green. Also, each Thursday, the library hosts a Preschool Virtual Storytime (3-5 year olds) with an age-appropriate, thematic story and rhyme for children beginning to develop their literacy skills. The storytime video link will be available here on the morning of the event, or on the library’s Facebook for 24 hours. KO LO M O K I M O U N D S S TAT E PA R K ( B L A K E LY ) Kolomoki protects the oldest and largest Woodland Indian site in the Southeast, including eight ancient earthen mounds. Activities include hiking on five miles of trails, touring the Native American museum, and even climbing to the top of a temple mound. The 2.5-mile Spruce Pine Trail, part of Georgia’s Southern Rivers Birding Trail, offers views of lakes Yahola and Kolomoki and wildlife observation platforms. Keep an eye out for White-tailed Deer, Gopher Tortoises, Wild Turkeys, Blue Herons and Red-headed Woodpeckers.

After the Civil War and end of slavery, the estate was eventually transformed into a dairy farm. Hike across the fields, along the marsh and several historic buildings, stopping for a guided tour of a furnished antebellum home. Spanish moss and majestic Live Oaks add to the beautiful scenery.

Six miles of trails (including roads once traveled by soldiers), undisturbed earthworks and an 1800s cabin provide hikers and their four-legged companions a range of scenery.

Make sure your phone is fully charged before you visit one of Savannah’s most Instagrammed attractions. Enter through a distinctive archway and travel a mile-long avenue lined with Live Oaks and Spanish Moss to the oldest tabby ruins in Georgia. Here you’ll learn about Wormsloe, the 1700s colonial estate of Noble Jones. The 3-mile Battery Trail will take you past the ruins, through maritime forest and along salt marsh where you can look for fiddler crabs at low tide. Bring binoculars to spot Great Blue Herons, Cattle Egrets, Red-wing Blackbirds and other coastal species. GAStateParks.org
