Sweet Summertime SUMMERTIME IS A MAGICAL SEASON. The kids are out of school, the sunshine seems never-ending and there’s no shortage of adventures that await. For many, summer evokes fond memories of childhood: sleepaway camp, family vacations and swimming until your fingers shriveled like prunes. We also celebrate our nation’s independence, host parties for our friends and family and, if we’re lucky, take a scenic road trip! In this issue of Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle, we want to remind you why summer is a season of opportunity. When’s the last time you played tourist in your hometown? We invite you to use Pages 18-21 [Feature 2]as your guide to some spectacular sites right here in Smyrna Vinings. This month is also a great opportunity to discover our local music scene at various venues like Mable House Barnes Amphitheater, The Battery Atlanta and SunTrust Park. We can’t wait to catch T he John Butler Trio with Trevor Hallon July 26!

Q: What temperature should I set my thermostat? A: We are asked this often. We say, set it at a temperature at which you are comfortable! For some, that is 70 degrees; for others, it is higher or lower. Do keep in mind that most AC systems are designed to keep a maximum 20 degree spread between the outside to the inside. There are many things that affect this: •

The age of your equipment

•

Overall condition of your equipment (has it been well maintained?)

•

The duct system

•

Humidity inside and outside

•

Draftiness of home (drafty windows, insulation, etc.)

•

Low refrigerant charge

•

Dirty filter or dirty evaporator coil

•

Failing mechanical parts

•

Hot air rises, so upper floors may struggle more

If you feel that your home is not cooling as well as it should, then it might be time have a Bartlett Technician take a look at it. Regular maintenance can go a long way to improving your indoor comfort!

Boxwood Cottage

Sunroom and office Irene Croft Jr.

Boxwood Cottage, following thoughtful renovation by its current owner, Irene Croft Jr., is now showing its prettiest face in 178 years in a guided tour conducted by the Friends of the Covered Bridge Historic District. A prominent landmark in the Greater Atlanta area, the former Gann House, Smyrna’s oldest extant residence, was constructed in 1841 by Captain John Gann, Cobb County’s first state senator. Boxwood’s early history was almost its final chapter. In the first week of July 1864, it was commandeered as quarters for Union officers just prior to the Battle of Atlanta. Executing the punitive “razed earth” policy of Gen. William T. Sherman, the officers torched the house as they were preparing to depart. CONTINUED >

Gann family lore relates that a superior officer galloping by on his horse spotted a Masonic banner being waved from a window and immediately ordered the flames extinguished. The house—and old Capt. Gann in his wooden wheelchair—survived Sherman’s merciless March to the Sea. Scorched timbers atop the stone foundations were discovered during the recent restoration work, marking the transition of historic Gann House into elegant Boxwood Cottage. Plans for Boxwood’s restoration and new addition were orchestrated from across a continent and ocean from Hawaii where Irene, an Atlanta transplant and pioneer flipper of vintage properties, resided for three decades. There she devoted Entryway features Hibiscus Bowl by Robert W. Butts, made of Koa wood unique to Hawaii

two years via email correspondence and internet searches to accomplish all the advance logistics required for the challenge, from selecting a simpatico architect and contractor to choosing materials and finishes to sourcing appliances and fixtures. In an extensive year-long roof-to-cellar makeover performed by the master craftsmen of Copper Sky Renovations, the original rooms of the house, with their classic 12-foot ceilings, heart pine floors, working fireplaces and walk-out windows, were retained, as were the fanciful Victorian trims installed in the 1870s. Newer, less compatible sections, added through the years, were replaced with a 2,000-square-foot addition to blend seamlessly with the earliest construction. The driveway as well as grounds and gardens—distinguished by palm trees in homage to Hawaii—were totally revamped to complement the residence. Every detail, inside and out, was custom-designed to reflect the owner’s eclectic taste, to display uncommon arts and artifacts collected from every corner of the planet, and to refine a local treasure of our Concord Covered Bridge Historic District into an exquisite “highly livable work of art.” The resulting renovation showcases a captivating marriage of the traditional with the entirely unexpected. Note on tour the distinctive coral and green exterior palette, spectacular wrought iron railings and garden gates, the antique stained-glass entryway, period-style solid bronze hardware, a riotously colorful Caribbean kitchen and a unique lavatory that features a laugh-out-loud architectural whimsy. Boxwood Cottage has emerged from its lengthy metamorphosis with a fresh, polished look to grace its authentic early 19th-century origins. Tour the Boxwood Cottage and other historic homes in the Concord Bridge Historic District on Second Street. Tickets available at ConcordCoveredBridge.org/tourofhomes.

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than coldpressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skinsafe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).

Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle | July 2019

THE VININGS VILLAGE WOMAN’S CLUB IS CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF FRIENDSHIP. The Club’s mission is to expand opportunities for friendship within the Vinings Village, along with support civic and cultural activities and beautification of the entrances of the village. Libby

Eubank,

the

mother

Janet

Dickerson, was one of eight founding members in 1978. Janet picked up the torch from her mother and thoughtfully designed a lasting tribute in the form of a charm to commemorate the Club’s first 40 years. Janets design drew upon the roots of Vinings’ early and most famous resident, Hardy Pace, who lived on Vinings Mountain.

+ The top of the shield shape represents the Chattahoochee River current, defining the south side of Vinings.

+ The inverted V represents Vinings Mountain. + Four circles, called “bezants,” are icons commonly used in family shields meaning “one worthy of trust and treasure.” These represent 40 years of friendships through VVWC.

+ The Gillyflower at the bottom of the shield has eight petals representing the eight founders and the beautification VVWC has brought to Vinings.

+ The back of the charm has “VVWC, est. 1978.” Proceeds from the sales of the charm go to the charities supported by the Vinings Village Woman’s Club.

FRESH BERRIES AND CREAMY CHOCOLATE GOODNESS ON A PLATE

chocolate strawberry cream cheese pie I ABSOLUTELY LOVE FRESH STRAW-

INGREDIENTS

BERRIES WHEN THEY ARE IN SEASON, AND MY FAVORITE WAY TO ENJOY THEM IS WHEN THEY ARE COVERED IN CHOCOLATE! My mom was always a great cook, as is my sister. But I never did well following recipes because I loved improvising. A few years back, I was about to make a cheesecake and some chocolate-covered strawberries for a neighborhood barbecue. True to form, I went off the grid and came up with this beautiful pie! I have entered this recipe in contests three different times and won every time. If you would like to impress your family and friends, give this a try. Beautiful, delicious and EASY, I promise!

+ 1 1/3 cups crushed graham cracker crumbs (substitute Oreo crumbs, if you really like chocolate) + 3 tablespoons granulated sugar + 2/3 cup melted butter + 12 ounces softened cream cheese + 1 1/4 cups semisweet chocolate chips (save 1/4 cup for top) + 1/4 cup packed brown sugar + 1 tablespoon vanilla + 12 ounces frozen whipped topping, thawed in refrigerator (very important!) + 1/2-inch square of paraffin + 1 quart fresh strawberries, sliced lengthwise about 1/8 inch thick

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 325 degrees. CRUST Combine cookie crumbs, sugar and butter well. Spray 9-inch pie pan lightly with cooking spray or lightly grease. Press crumbs into bottom and up sides of pan, distributing evenly. Bake for 10 minutes. Cool. FILLING Melt 1 cup of chocolate chips in a double boiler or microwave. Be careful the chocolate does not burn. Beat cream cheese until light and fluffy with electric mixer. Add brown sugar and vanilla. Mix well. Add cooled chocolate. Mix well. Fold in the whipped topping. Spoon the filling into the cooled crust evenly, smoothing out the top. Cover with foil and chill at least 4 hours. TOPPING Don’t top until just a couple hours before serving as berries can get soft. Start at the outer edge of the pie and make a row of strawberries overlapping the edge of the pie pan a bit. Continue laying out strawberries in circular, overlapping rows. Save one whole berry for the very center of the pie. Heat paraffin and remaining 1/4 cup chocolate (add paraffin if chocolate is too thick to drizzle). Drizzle chocolate from a small spoon over berries.

BUNIONS DID YOU KNOW THAT BUNIONS ARE NOT CAUSED BY SHOE GEAR? • Bunions are mal position of the joint, not a bone that over grows. • They are caused by imbalance of pull that exists between the toes. • Factors that affect bunions are: pregnancy, weight and over pronation.

BEFORE

• Shoes do not cause bunion but can make it worse. • Bunions should be corrected when appropriate in size or else pain and secondary changes occur. • Secondary changes cause arthritis. • Arthritis damages cartilages which then causes pain.

CORRECTING BUNIONS WILL LIMIT AND STOP PROGRESSION OF ARTHRITIS. • Wearing foot orthotics reduces stress to bone and joint. • Surgically correcting bunions realigns the joint and makes the joint feel better. • Minimally invasive and open procedures are options for surgical correction. • Choice of surgical correction is based on the severity of the bunion.

For more information or questions on bunions and how to correct bunions, please contact Dr.Vivian Iwu of Choice Podiatry.
