Welcome to the Thankful Issue! Can you believe it? November is here, and we’re here for jackets and sweater weather! As a kid around this time, I’d be excited about seeing my cousins and grandparents for Thanksgiving, preparing for Christmas, and traveling to see them! The thought of warm fires, yummy Thanksgiving meals, and being with my favorite people always made way for gratefulness and hope for the future. Gratefulness is a practice, a necessary tool to see the good in the places where it may seem impossible. Being grateful is not necessarily natural; we are all human and have experienced life’s twists and turns! Here’s the thinglook at what is around you and inside of you- you are a gem of inestimable value, and the world needs your gifts! As a parent, this is so obvious to me in the eyes of my now-grown son- I see the greatest of unearned gifts in his being. We are blessed to have friends, loved ones, and chosen families wherever and however we’ve grown. With your 2023 Thankful issue, you’ll read stories of gratitude and experiences shared by our partners, team, and the community. You’ll also see ways life experiences are used to give back in service. We are so thankful for each one of you who partners with us and for those in our readership- this amazing part of the world has done so much for the community and small businesses. Henrico Police Substation to be built with $15M Contract Henrico supervisors awarded Southway Builders a $15.2 million contract for a new police station and K-9 training facility. The 19,900 sq. ft. facility will be built on 11 acres at 640 N. Airport Drive and replace the Fair Oaks Station. Construction started in October and is expected to be completed by January 2025. The substation plans to accommodate patrol, special operations, emergency response units, an emergency communications training center, and a K-9 training facility.

Restaurateur Lalo Macias Opens a New Mexican Eatery in the West End Last month, Eduardo “Lalo” Macias opened his seventh restaurant in the area, Lalo’s Margaritas Mexican Grill, at the former home of The Wooden Spoon restaurant. In addition to his Lalo-branded restaurants in the Fan and Henrico, Macias owns Two Compadre’s Taqueria in Chesterfield, Monterrey Burrito Company in Powhatan, Chicano’s Cocina downtown, and The Patron in Mechanicsville. Dominion Construction Partners to Build Dominion Exchange in Henrico Local general contractor Dominion Construction Partners recently started construction on Dominion Exchange, a 70,000-square-foot office and industrial project at 9003 Old Staples Mill Road in Henrico County. Dominion Exchange will serve as Dominion Construction Partners’ new headquarters, with the remaining space to be leased out. Site work began in early September, and Dominion Construction Partners hopes to move to its new home by the second quarter of 2024.

Industrial Taphouse Restaurant Expands to Goochland Sarah and Jeremy Chapman, owners of Industrial Taphouse in Hanover, are opening a second location in Goochland County, Industrial Taphouse West. The new restaurant will be located at the former site of

The Traditional Table Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table.

For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.

The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky.
