My favorite memories during our family’s Christmases were visiting my grandmother in North Carolina. The tree, always set in her living room, was often cut from her mountain cabin in Virginia, and she placed candy canes all over the branches. The smell of peppermint and spruce was delightful and magical. Name Announced for Proposed Animal Adoption Center After tallying the final votes, the name for Henrico’s proposed animal shelter and adoption center was recently announced. It was a closerun race, but in the end, the Henrico

Largest Expansion Since 1987 Planned for Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden currently encompasses 82 acres. Through a purchase agreement with Lakeside Baptist Church, the nonprofit garden will acquire an additional 6.2 acres along the western edge of its Lakeside Avenue location. Henrico County will contribute $750,000 over three years in support of the sale. The garden will need to raise the remaining $1.15 million from donors. This marks the largest expansion of the garden grounds since its opening in 1987.

The changes will include a new carbon storage building, additional deep bed filters, and improved equipment. The facility ensures that the water they put back into the James River is cleaner than when it was taken out of the watershed. The planned upgrades will enable the Department of Public Utilities to clean wastewater even more effectively.

Tourism is Booming in Henrico and Surrounding Region

An annual study recently released for the Virginia Tourism Corp showed that Henrico County tourism eclipsed $1.3 billion in 2021. This is the highest total of any locality in central Virginia and the fifth highest in Virginia. Spending by tourists and other visitors to Henrico jumped nearly 46% from 2020. Local tourism supported more than 8,700 jobs in Henrico in 2021. With construction underway on a 185,000-square-foot indoor sport, music, and community events center, tourism is expected to continue to grow.

Art Nooks Installed in County Parks Sisters, Rithanya and Nikhita Saravanan, created and started a project to install Art Nooks near picnic shelters at Deep Run, Dorey, and Echo Lake parks. The mounted, decorative cabinets, which function similarly to a Little Free Library, are filled with free-to-use art supplies to help park visitors relax and embrace their creativity. In their free time, the girls teach art classes through their nonprofit, 4 Art 2 Heart. The Art Nooks project was in partnership between 4 Art 2 Heart, Henrico 4-H, and the Henrico County Division of Recreation and Parks.

Bible nerds, if you haven’t yet seen Washington, D.C.’s, Museum of the Bible, it’s time you marveled (as I did) at the exhibit of esoteric translations (the Book of Isaiah in Mohawk!). And if your knowledge of the best-selling book ever isn’t geek-like but you’ve wanted to learn more – without reading the approximately 1,200 pages in the average Good Book – there are novice-friendly exhibits to make an entertaining and informative introduction.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM The six-story, 430,000-square-foot museum opened in 2017, with its mission to serve as a “global, innovative educational institution whose purpose is to invite all people to engage with the transformative power of the Bible.” museumofthebible.org

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

INGREDIENTS 6 slices of bread 4 TBS butter, softened 1/2 cup raisins Optional: 1/2 cup chopped apple, 1/2 cup walnut 2 1/2 cups milk (dairy or non-dairy) 1/2 cup dark brown sugar 1/2 tsp nutmeg 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp vanilla extract Optional Toppings: honey, maple syrup, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream 34

INSTRUCTIONS Butter bread and cut into cubes. Layer bread cubes, raisins, apples, and walnuts (if using) in greased 8x8 baking dish. Combine milk, sugar, and spices in small bowl. Pour mixture over bread and let rest for at least 30 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes until pudding is firm and golden. Serve hot with preferred toppings.
