LIFESTYLE LETTER

To a Healthy, Happy Year! Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. Whether it’s in business, health, or relationships, it’s not what you do occasionally that makes the difference, but what you do most of the time. Consider this: You wouldn’t go on vacation every day (although that sounds lovely!), but planning a couple of trips each year is a realistic and restorative goal. Similarly, indulging in a rich dessert from SHIV Supper Club’s late-night SHIV After Dinner or the Peanut Butter & Chocolate Bar at Society Swan isn’t an everyday event, but it’s a delicious treat now and then. This year, focus on small, consistent actions that lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Take in a concert (Cole Swindell, anyone?!), hit the trail for a run, or play a round of golf—whatever brings you joy. Carve out moments for rest, and don’t forget to savor life’s pleasures. It’s the “most of the time” choices that shape our lives. Here’s to a healthy, happy 2026—we’re rooting for you!

letter from the PUBLISHER

There’s something about January in Scottsdale that feels different from anywhere else. Maybe it’s the crisp mornings, the desert sun warming up by mid-afternoon, or the quiet sense of possibility that seems to float in the air. This month always gives me the gentle nudge I need to check in with myself, choosing what I want more of, what I want less of, and what I want to protect fiercely as the year begins. This year, I’m approaching health and wellness with purpose and precision—not as a slowdown, but as a foundation for performing at my best. I’m paying closer attention to what fuels my energy, sharpens my focus, and supports the pace at which I want to grow. I’m recognizing that true strength comes from being intentional and disciplined, and that investing in my well-being is what allows me to operate at a higher level. I’m stepping into 2026 with a commitment to staying strong and centered so I can continue showing up fully for my family, my friends, and my community. Wellness, for me, looks like routines that build stamina, early mornings that spark creativity, and staying connected to the people who motivate and challenge me. I’m making space for the moments that recharge me and the relationships that push me to grow, because they’re what keep me grounded while I pursue bigger goals this year. And as always, I’m grateful for this community. Scottsdale has a way of turning strangers into neighbors and neighbors into lifelong friends. Whether we’re cheering each other on, sharing local favorites, or simply showing up when someone needs that extra bit of support, this city amazes me year after year. So here’s to January—a month that invites all of us to start fresh, reset our priorities, and remember what truly matters. I hope you find something in this issue that inspires a small shift or a big change, whatever your season calls for. Wishing you a healthy, joyful, and grounded start to 2026. YOU KNEW YOU WANTED TO GO INTO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY WHEN …

I’d have to say college. That’s really where I got my start, singing onstage in front of people, although it wasn’t that many people. But then after falling in love with being onstage, I got really into the songwriting side of the business. I still didn’t know about it, but I knew I wanted to be part of writing the songs. Music has always been impactful to me, as far back as just being a kid. But I finally knew I loved being onstage, and then I was hearing these songs that people were writing. As a kid, I didn’t know that every artist didn’t write their own songs. So, when I discovered songwriting, that’s what I became obsessed with it. I wanted to be part of writing songs that helped other people the way music had always helped me

Courtesy Barrett-Jackson Auction Company

WHEN YOU’RE WRITING, WHAT USUALLY COMES FIRST FOR YOU—CONCEPT, MELODY, OR A SPECIFIC LINE YOU CAN’T SHAKE?

You know, I get this question all the time. There’s no specific answer. It just kind of depends on the song, the idea, the time— whatever comes first, that’s what you run with. If it’s an idea, run with that. If it’s a melody, try to figure out, you know, some lyrics to it or whatever. There’s no real formula to write a song other than being open to whatever, whenever. That’s kind of my best thing. You know, some of my best songs have been from walking into a room with no idea, just talking to the other writers, and something comes out of that. But then sometimes, I’ll write down an idea I have or a melody I have, and I’ll record it in my phone.

Courtesy Barrett-Jackson Auction Company

YOU’VE WRITTEN FOR OTHER ARTISTS AS WELL AS YOURSELF. HOW DOES YOUR CREATIVE APPROACH SHIFT DEPENDING ON WHO THE SONG IS FOR?

I always try to write the best song I can write, especially earlier in my writing career before I had a record deal. That was always the goal, and it’s still the goal. But then I was writing for whoever believed in the song, best idea, best whatever it was. It didn’t have to be necessarily personal to me. I would just write the best song. Now, being an artist, I definitely use my time and energy writing more toward where I’m at in my life or where I’ve been. But sometimes even now, when I’m writing something that means something to me, things change, time passes, and I may not be in the same spot I was when I wrote it. So, if another artist believes in it, then that’s amazing. But for me, I think, now I’m not going out like trying to write songs for other artists, but I hope other artists realize that from me writing through my experiences, that if anything connects with them, that’s always the biggest compliment you can have—when another artist believes in your song enough to record it. And thankfully, I’ve had a few of my buddies earlier on in my career that made that possible for me.

22

B ACK STAGE | ENTERTAI N ME N T

FAVORITE SONG OR ALBUM YOU’VE RECORDED THUS FAR?

You know, that’s a tough question. They all have meaning to me in different ways. But I’ll probably go with this last one, “Spanish Moss,” just because it wasn’t an ideal time frame. It took a little longer than we wanted, but I think I’m most proud of the way I kept going back to the drawing board, knowing it wasn’t good enough. And I think my last album, Stereotype, which is arguably maybe the best album I’ve ever put out, raised the bar and made me dig deeper and know that I had to put out something great. And I think “Spanish Moss” is that for me. But honestly, how do you say it’s better than [the album] You Should Be Here? Every album has a different meaning. So, I don’t know that I could actually pick a favorite.

LET’S TALK SCOTTSDALE! YOU’RE HERE ON JAN. 16 HEADLINING BARRETT-JACKSON’S ROCK THE BLOCK CONCERT. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT BEING PART OF SUCH AN ICONIC EVENT?

I love the Scottsdale area. I mean, I could see myself living there someday. I love it, I’m a golfer, and it’s a great place to golf. So, I think just being in the area, but then also I’ve heard of this Barrett-Jackson event for years and have seen photos. I love the way some of my band, crew, and people are so excited to be around it. I’m excited to experience it for the first time and see some amazing cars that I probably can’t afford and just enjoy the night. This will be my first time. But from what I hear, after seeing it, this won’t be my last time going to check it out.

SPEAKING OF BEING IN SCOTTSDALE, YOU TRAVEL SO MUCH! WHAT ARE YOUR TRICKS TO STAYING HEALTHY?

Hydration. That’s pretty key. You know, being a new dad, I’m not getting the exercise I probably should, so I think whenever you can make time to exercise [you should]. I know any time I’ve ever been in a good spot, it was because I was taking care of myself and exercising. And it’s just crazy how important that is for the mental side of things, and obviously the physical [side, too].

WHEN IT COMES TO A CHEAT MEAL, YOUR FAVORITE IS …

Feel like I have several of those—but ice cream. I have a sweet tooth, so any kind of dessert. I go through phases. I feel like that’s where I don’t really want sweets or I really do. And I think, yeah, my cheat meal, I’m gonna say any dessert they’re offering, maybe some crème brûlée.

WHAT CAN FANS LOOK FORWARD TO NEXT FROM YOU?

I’m going to continue to write songs and put out music. In the world we live in today, it’s changed so much so fast that it’s okay to put out an album in June and then put out a song a couple months after it, if it’s something that you feel led to do. I just experienced that, and it made me proud. So, I think we’re just going to keep writing. I think there’s a lot I haven’t said about my marriage, being the dad, and just the way Rainey has made me view the world. So, I’m really looking forward to it. I think my fans who have been with me since day one are looking forward to that side of my music. I think the people who know me best know that side of me, but I haven’t really had a chance to express that through my music. So, I hope they can look forward to songs that are more about right where I am in my life, not where I’ve been. And touring. We’ve got some really big shows lined up that we haven’t announced, and I’m just excited to be back on the road.

24

B ACK STAGE | ENTERTAI N ME N T

AND LAST—ONE THING EVEN YOUR BIGGEST FANS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?

Just recently, I haven’t been into this since I was a kid, but trading cards. Mostly sports, obviously, just baseball, number one, football, basketball, whatever it may be, even NASCAR. I’ve started kind of collecting cards and not really sure what for, but it’s the only thing I’ve done, and it connects me to my childhood and just stuff that I enjoy. I think people know I’m a big sports fan, but I didn’t even know that I was into the sports cards thing. So, that’s kind of a new hobby. Well, probably nobody knows about that because it hasn’t been going on that long, but you know, we’ll see where that goes. Who knows? Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions, holds its Scottsdale Auction at WestWorld of Scottsdale from Jan. 17-25. The world-class automotive lifestyle event showcases thousands of the world’s most sought-after, unique, and valuable automobiles, both on display and crossing the auction block. The event also includes thrill rides, shopping, dining, and more—including the Rock The Block concert. Barrett-Jackson.com

New Year, New Ways to Work Out 26

G E T ACT IV E | FI TNES S

Whether it’s about craving a fresh healthy start to the year or hoping to reverse the effects of holiday indulgences, many of us will find ourselves focusing on working out this time of year. Often, that means hitting the gym. However, if the idea of doing the same dull machine circuit, going through the motions at the free-weight area, or trying to find a group class that fits your busy schedule is a motivation killer, there are alternatives. If you’re looking for ways to get fit beyond the gym, consider these fun outof-the-box ideas.

PUPPY YOGA

If you’ve tried yoga and are convinced it’s not for you, there’s nothing like downward dogging with actual dogs to change your mind. Puppy Yoga Club in Phoenix gives you the opportunity to do just that with an hourlong session that combines the benefits of a solid yoga workout with the inner boost that only playful puppies can deliver. Start with a 30-minute yoga session suited for all levels, where you’re surrounded by fourlegged motivational pals as you strengthen and stretch. Next, enjoy 30 minutes of playtime bliss as you cuddle with the warm and soft puppies and relax with your new best workout buddies by your side.

PADDLEBOARDING AND PADDLEBOARD YOGA

There are few workouts that target the core like ones incorporating a paddleboard. If this is a goal and you enjoy water activities, there are two popular options. Stand-up paddleboarding—or SUP—requires core-strength balance while the lower and upper bodies remain at work. It’s ideal for taking in moving scenery from a different perspective on the water. For example, Saguaro Lake offers 22 miles of scenic shoreline and is a favorite to paddle at sunrise. Reward a morning of invigorating exercise with a picnic on

Add-on options include a floating sound therapy session or a calming meditation on the water.

BORN For Ultramarathoner Jamil Coury, Long-Distance Trail Running is a Solo Sport Meant to be Shared There are those who love running. There are those who love running—a lot. Then there are those who not only run but also promote the sport, organize races, and inspire others. Jamil Coury is one those people. For the fourth-generation Arizonan who grew up in Glendale, graduated from Arizona State University, and still lives nearby, trail running is more than a pastime. It’s a way of life. We recently sat down with Coury to talk about trail running, ultramarathons, and how his company, Aravaipa Running, which he founded in 2009, is bringing attention to and helping others enjoy the rapidly growing sport. HOW DID YOU GET INTO RUNNING?

I got into running [at Ironwood High School]. I tried out for the golf team, then the soccer team, and I didn’t make either. So I joined the track program and stayed with it for all four years. Then I did cross-country during my sophomore, junior, and senior years. I didn’t run collegiately, but I continued recreationally and eventually stumbled across a local group that did road races. Then I found a local trail-running group that also happened to run ultramarathons. At first, I couldn’t believe people would run for 24 hours straight or for 50 miles or 100 miles in the mountains, but it sounded like fun. I knew it was the right fit for me.

A TRADITIONAL MARATHON IS 26.2 MILES. WHAT IS AN ULTRAMARATHON? Technically, anything longer than a marathon is an ultramarathon. The next standard distance is 50 kilometers, about 31.1 miles. Most people who have run a marathon can use that same exact training and run a 50k ultra. The next big benchmark would be 50 miles, 100 kilometers (62 miles), then 100 miles. A 50k is pretty close to a marathon experience. If you do a 100-miler, you’re now running through the night and probably into the next day, so that creates a whole new challenge.

HOW DO YOU PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY PREPARE FOR RUNNING 100 MILES? Most people who participate in an ultramarathon are not running every step. Sure, the people at the front of the pack likely are, but they’re well-trained. The majority are going with the flow of the terrain. They’re hiking a lot, especially later in the race. Mentally, you have to break it down into smaller pieces. It’s even hard for me to conceptualize some of the things. Oftentimes, it’s just going from aid station to aid station. If you break it up into more manageable sections, the day kind of floats along.

DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN RACES ACROSS THE WORLD? I’ve done some in Mexico’s Copper Canyon, in China and Hong Kong, and even in the Alps in Europe. It’s a great way for me to travel and see different areas while doing something I love.

“Some people say it’s like the Burning Man of ultramarathons.” YOU PUT ON THE JAVELINA JUNDRED AND THE COCODONA 250. TELL US ABOUT THEM.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENTS AS A RUNNER? Just finishing a lot of these races is a huge achievement. But there’s one called the Barkley Marathons in Tennessee, and it’s almost impossible to finish. There are no course markings, and the route is revealed the day before the race. There’s a ton of climbing, up and down mountains, and going off trail. I’ve attempted this race six times, and I’ve only completed three out of the five laps, three different times. They call that a “fun run finish.” But just getting that far is probably one of my proudest achievements. Only 20 runners in the 30-year history of the race have ever finished it.

WHAT DOES ARAVAIPA RUNNING DO?

Our core business is organizing endurance events, such as trail runs and ultramarathons. We also do the Tucson Marathon, and we’ve got some mountain bike races. We do events in seven different states. Our goal is to put on excellent events that provide people with amazing experiences in the endurance space. We also do a lot of media. We have some YouTube channels, and we livestream some of our events. We even have a clothing brand (Run Steep Get High), and about a year ago, we acquired Ultra Running magazine and its accompanying website, UltraRunning.com.

36

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FIT N E SS

The Javelina is the largest 100-mile ultramarathon in the U.S. We had 491 finishers and close to 800 starters this year. It’s five laps of a 20-mile loop at McDowell Mountain Regional Park. A lot of people come out to help—crew, pacers, aid providers. It’s a big party vibe. Some people say it’s like the Burning Man of ultramarathons. The Cocodona 250 is our crown jewel of races. We created it in 2021, and the whole idea was an epic journey across central Arizona, connecting historic towns with incredible mountain ranges and canyons along the way. It starts in Black Canyon City and finishes in Downtown Flagstaff. The winner will do it in about 60 hours, but participants have up to 125 hours, or a bit over five days, to finish. I did it the first year, and it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I was sleep deprived; I was in so much pain. But finishing was so worth it and such an achievement.

HOW CAN ARAVAIPA HELP PEOPLE GET INVOLVED IN TRAIL RUNNING? Not all of our organized events are ultramarathons. We have a weekly run group that you can come out for. Details are on our website (AravaipaRunning.com) or the Aravaipa Group Trail Run Facebook page. We have something to meet every person where they’re at. We have 5k and 10k runs. And you don’t have to run. A lot of times we’re hiking. We just want you to get outside and enjoy yourself.

MAGNIFICENT MODS Customize Your Dream Vehicle: MOTORMIA’s AI-Powered Platform Revolutionizes the Automotive Modification Industry ARTICLE BY REBECCA L. RHOADES PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANIELLE MUCCILLO

AU TO C LU B | AUTO + MARIN E

Cars. Ever since the first Ford Model A rolled off the assembly line in 1903, Americans have been obsessed with motor vehicles. We name them. We write songs and make movies about them. We race them. We collect them. And we love to customize them. “About one-third of the U.S. population is a classified enthusiast, meaning they have an irrational, emotional, and financial relationship with their cars or trucks,” says Scottsdale resident Isaac Bunick. “In fact, it’s the biggest lifestyle choice in America, but there’s never really been a category-defining place on the web for this audience.” Until now. Two years ago, Bunick founded MOTORMIA, an AI-powered app—or digital destination, as he calls it—that allows users to virtually modify their actual vehicle using real parts found on the market. A former auto trader who later worked at some of the top web development and technology start-ups, Bunick was inspired by his young daughter, Mia, who would shadow him in the garage and want to know every detail about each custom build. “She kept bugging me, ‘Daddy, how do we make the car faster!?’ and ‘Daddy, how do I make the car pink!?’” he recalls. “So I said, ‘Why don’t we make an app.’ It started as a joke, but it’s become way more than that.” You don’t have to be a die-hard gearhead to use MOTORMIA. In fact, Bunick designed it with the amateur enthusiast

in mind—and the process is easier than it sounds. To start, select your vehicle from a continually updated list. “A major challenge here was aggregating all the makes and models across the entire world, and all the trends and specs of each and every one of those models,” Bunick explains. Next, choose your build goals. What do you want to achieve? Will this be a DIY build or a professional job? What is your budget? Once you have entered your details and ideas, the namesake tuning expert (and AI agent), Mia, kicks in. Using data curated from not just websites and catalogs but also from forums, videos, and real-life examples, Mia provides targeted recommendations for parts and modifications that are proven to have worked in real life. “You have all these options available, and you’re able to buy the parts and pieces that you’re after, or stuff that you don’t even know that you might want, based on what you want to achieve within your budget,” Bunick notes. The concept has been an overwhelming success. Today, MOTORMIA is used by millions of enthusiasts who design, tune, and perfect their dream machines, and it’s considered an authority in the aftermarket industry. Free to download, it does not require a subscription nor are there any required in-app purchases. You can learn more about MOTORMIA— and get started building your dream vehicle—at MOTORMIA.co.

An Event Fore All New Inclusive Amenities Add to the WM Phoenix Open’s ‘The People’s Open’ Persona New view-enhancing additions, elevated food and beverage options, and venues that cater to the preferences of a wider audience mean that the Greatest Show on Grass is about to get even greater. The 2026 WM Phoenix Open will welcome its trademark enthusiastic crowds to the legendary TPC Scottsdale from Feb. 2-8. In addition to the main attraction that is the PGA TOUR and its world-class fleet of pros, a much-anticipated concert lineup, gathering spots for every kind of spectator, and the famous 16th hole Coliseum further cements the TOUR’s most popular and beloved event’s reputation as “The People’s Open.” A new structure on the 16th hole will boast better unobstructed views thanks to frameless glass railings and cleaner sight lines. The first new construction in 20 years, this aims to impress with stellar bites and sips, explains Jason Eisenberg, 2026 WM Phoenix Open tournament chairman. “We wanted to make sure that when you enter the 16th, the menu is first class,” Eisenberg says. “We are really focusing on it having similar food akin to high-end venues.”

The Pin High Club will also make its debut adjacent to the green. Living up to its name, this luxe hot spot will flaunt the event’s highest-end food and beverage offerings, making it the most desirable place to be. The more chill spectator will find a comfortable haven to take a load off in the Family Care Center. A collaboration with Mayo Clinic and Phoenix Children’s Hospital, it offers an enclosed space for respite-seekers spanning families, nursing moms, older guests, and anyone who needs a little break from the heat or any overwhelming sights and sounds. “You can be a golf fan or good-time fan and we’ve got you covered. But it is ‘The People’s Open,’ so we want to make it more accessible,” Eisenberg says. “We want them to feel there’s a home for everybody. The more we can include, the better off we are.” Pathways that improve connectivity throughout the grounds, and digital tickets for admission and the majority of venues, also streamline the fan experience.

The showstopping concert lineup features The Killers kicking off the event with the Concert at the Coliseum. The top-notch series continues at the Coors Light Birds Nest with Bailey Zimmerman on Feb. 4, Zach Top on Feb. 5, and John Summit on Feb. 7. As of press deadline, the artist for Feb. 6 was not announced. Fans can expect familiar amenities from years past. The commitment to sustainability remains with all suppliers, vendors, and even the new event structures all contributing to make the Open a zero-waste event. Attendees can purchase a reusable bottle from the gift shop and use refillable water stations throughout the grounds.

For nine decades, the WM Phoenix Open has served as the TOUR’s most popular event for pros and fans alike. Hosted by The Thunderbirds, it also supports countless charitable organizations that benefit nearly every facet of the community, from hospitals, health care, and high schools to first responders, families in need, and the arts. Last year alone, hundreds of community organizations were recipients of a combined total of $18.1 million. “At the end of the day, this is a charity event and all the money goes to the organizations we support,” Eisenberg says. “The community responded incredibly well last year, and we are very thankful for their support and are excited to see them in 2026.” WMPhoenixOpen.com

NAVIGATING WEALTH WITH NATASHA How Does My Financial Life Affect My Overall Wellness?

More than you might think. Financial wellness is one of the most overlooked parts of self-care — and it can influence everything from your stress levels to your sleep to your confidence.

At Sunstone Wealth Management, I remind women that money isn’t just numbers. It’s emotional. It’s mental. It’s tied to security, opportunity, and the freedom to make choices that support the life you want. Here are three simple ways to strengthen your financial wellness this month: • Do a quick “money reset.” Spend 20 minutes reviewing recurring expenses and cancel anything that no longer serves you. Clarity creates calm. • Align your spending with your values. Ask yourself: Does my spending reflect what matters most to me right now? Wellness comes from intentional choices. • Automate one thing. Whether it’s savings, retirement contributions, or a debt payment — automation reduces stress and supports long-term growth. Financial wellness isn’t about perfection — it’s about feeling in control, supported, and confident in your next steps.

Women-led financial planning with clarity, confidence, and compassion. Your future deserves more than a plan — it deserves a partner.

DeepLook Medical Advances Breast Cancer Detection With Visual Intelligence Powered by AI Precision

A DEEPER LOOK

52

EDU CAT ION C OR N E R | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS

Just about everyone knows someone whose life has been touched by breast cancer. It’s Arizona’s most common cancer diagnosis with more than 5,200 cases identified each year. And no matter how much advocacy exists for mammograms as the key to early detection, it’s not perfect. Or foolproof. But DeepLook Medical aims to change that with Visual Intelligence software created specifically to improve the accuracy of cancer detection by focusing on dense breast tissue, which affects 45% of women and disproportionately affects Black, Asian, Hispanic and Native American women. And with traditional mammograms missing up to 50% of cancers in dense breast tissue and 70% of cancers occurring in women with dense breast tissue, this technology is especially vital, explains DeepLook Medical CEO Marissa Fayer.

“Standard mammograms won’t be able to visualize in the most dense tissue,” Fayer says. “Cancer shows up white and so does dense breast tissue. It’s like looking for a cotton ball in a cloud.” DL Precise is the first and only FDAcleared visual intelligence platform in its category, strategically leveraging AI to enhance breast imaging analysis. It is helping radiologists in the nation’s top medical centers, including Banner MD Anderson, Cleveland Clinic, and Geisinger Health, make earlier diagnoses with some of the 42 million mammograms that are done every year in the U.S. Arizona’s supportive environment was a key reason the company moved its headquarters to Scottsdale in the spring of 2025. CONTINUED >

Marissa Fayer

53

This niche area of health care is one that Fayer is very comfortable in. An engineer, she is a longtime advocate for equity in women’s health who developed the 3D mammogram 15 years ago. She is also a founding member of the Women’s Health Network that is chaired by former First Lady Jill Biden, and is the founder of HERhealthEQ, a nonprofit delivering diagnostic equipment to underserved countries.

54

EDU CAT ION C OR N E R | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS

However, as a woman with dense breast tissue herself, DeepLook’s latest tool hits a very personal note. “If you think about it, half the women you know have dense breast tissue, so yes, it is personal for many of us,” Fayer says. Fayer and DeepLook were instrumental in advocating legislation that resulted in new FDA mandates that require women to receive breast density notifications. DeepLook’s software works in tandem to help ensure that women who are told they are high-risk will also be able to have any sign of cancer caught early. “I love it when radiologists tell us, ‘I was able to visualize this so quickly that I didn’t have to call my patient back,’ or ‘I was able to make a faster decision and be able to feel confident with what I was looking at,’” Fayer says. “When you find cancer early, it’s 99% survivable. That’s important.” DeepLookMedical.com
