LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Lure of Scottsdale When I interview people for stories, if they aren’t Arizona natives, I often ask what drew them to move here. Invariably, the answer is almost always the same—the weather. To be honest, that’s also what drew me here at first, more than 20 years ago. I had grown up in New York, gone to college in Upstate New York (near Canada), and spent a semester living in London. What I’m trying to say is that I’d seen my fair share of gray skies, rain, and snow. Blue skies and sun seemed like a dream. Of course, like most, I stayed for more than the sunshine. There is so much here to experience, from hiking to golf to museums to dining and more. We’ve also got stunning resorts and events that people travel from around the globe to attend. Some days I still can’t believe that I live here. Still, when you live somewhere, you often forget to take advantage of everything the area has to offer (ahem, such as when I first visited the Statue of Liberty in person only after I was an Arizona resident and went back to New York to visit friends and family with my kids!). In this issue—our Local Love issue—we hope to remind you of some of the amazing people, places, and events in our city. Meet Scott Grigg, Matt Altman, and Josh Altman in our cover feature, where they talk about their new partnership. We also feature Craig and Ginger Schmersal, who talk horses, television shows, and competitions, as well as artist Marissa Heerdt. And get to know Marshall Shore, the Hip Historian, who makes it his mission to share the area’s history. There’s also information on local date destinations, sparkling wines, and more. So read on, enjoy, and I hope to see you out and about—where we don’t have to worry about the weather, since it’s almost always sunny and perfect! Aren’t we lucky we live here? Yours,

Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West recently broke ground to add nearly 12,000 square feet to its museum space. The expansion was enabled by a $12 million donation from Louis "Buzz" Sands IV, a respected entrepreneur and owner of several car dealerships across the Valley. There will be two new galleries, named the Louis Sands IV Center, that will house a diverse collection of artworks, artifacts, and stories that further illuminate the American West's captivating past. 5 Essential Tips for Revitalizing Your Wellness Advancing your health starts with the right choices! This includes the right clinician providing the right service based on the best outcomes that can be individualized for your unique needs. Here are 5 essential wellness tips that are having a positively profound impact on our community: Reestablish Weight Management Symptoms: Sleep apnea, depression, hypertension, low energy, mood swings, decreased drive Weight management can be a challenge, often involving a multitude of complexities including metabolic functions and biochemical factors. Being overweight even by 5 to 10 lbs. can cause serious health issues. When it comes to weight loss, adopting a comprehensive, health-centric approach is paramount for achieving the best results. Average weight loss in clinical trials is showing 15% to 20% of body weight. Top Choices: Semaglutide, Tirzepatide, BioBoost Replenish Depleted Hormones Symptoms: Hot flashes, abdominal fat, low energy, decreased drive, hair loss, lack mental clarity Hormones are key to almost everything the body does and vital to how the body operates. Men and women may see declining hormone levels as early as 20s to 30s, and this can further decline at an accelerated rate as we continue to age. Bio-identical hormone ointments can be applied quickly and absorb within seconds. No need to worry about painful injections, messy creams or surgical implants. Top Choices: Bi-est, Progesterone, Testosterone, DHEA Ointments Replace Lost Nutrients Symptoms: Inflammation, weakness, fatigue, dehydration, sunken eyes, dry skin One of the main reasons why IV hydration is effective is its ability to provide immediate nutrition and essential vitamins with up to 100% absorption for relief and replenishment. Drinking fluids orally can take time to be absorbed and may not provide sufficient nutrient distribution. IV hydration, on the other hand, bypasses the digestive system and delivers fluids directly into the bloodstream. Top Choices: IV Hydration such as Cold & Flu, Myers Cocktail, NAD+ Restore Low Vitamins Symptoms: Muscle weakness, forgetfulness, pale skin, dizziness, tiredness Vitamin deficiency can occur if you don’t eat the right foods or if your body has trouble absorbing and processing essential vitamins. Low vitamin levels can also be caused by the immune system attacking cells in your body, stomach or intestinal insufficiencies, and certain diseases such as Crohn’s and Celiac disease. Restoring these vitamins through injections help them become instantly available to the body. Top Choices: Vitamin injections such as B12, D, Glutathione Reclaim Your Time Symptoms: Stress, anxiety, lack of focus, decreased mental clarity Wellness options should be available when you need it, where you need it. Our experienced nurses are equipped to provide a variety of services including IV Therapy, hormone therapy, lab testing, weight loss management, telehealth, and aesthetics. Top Choices: Telehealth, at-home (mobile), same-day services available 7 days a week

letter from the PUBLISHER

Love is in the air. At least that’s how the saying goes. February tends to be the month we focus on love—love for your partner, family, and friends. And this month’s issue is going to bring you all of that and more! But what about self-love? When we start a new year, most of us tend to start with getting back to our healthy self. Being done with the holidays and back to healthy eating and working out. That’s self-love we all need. I challenge you to make self-love your mantra this month. To focus on yourself and how to become a better version of yourself. Maybe kick a bad habit and replace it with something else. Or, learn more about your neighbors, community, and really start loving where you live. We all have the ability to make changes and LOVE the new version of these changes. I tell my family and friends all the time, “I’m selfish because I want to be my best self for you. When I put others above all my needs, no one gets the best Alicia, and that’s not fair to anyone.” Take this month to fall in love. Fall in love with a new hairdo, a workout routine, a recipe, or a restaurant. Fall in love with trying new things and getting out of your comfort zone. Love comes in all shapes and sizes and doesn’t conform to one thing. What will you fall in love with this month and carry into the rest of 2024? For me, I’m going to fall more in love with Scottsdale, getting to know you, and connecting this community together. Love to you all, Alicia Haygood Owner/Publisher

“We vacation together, so we may as well work together.”—Matt Altman “I am a deal junkie,” says Scott Grigg. “I enjoy putting deals together for my clients. This is the biggest investment most folks will make in their life, and it’s an honor to be able to assist with it.” Grigg, a Scottsdale native who graduated from Arizona State University, says he was always fascinated with real estate. “I wanted to work in a field doing something I enjoy; therefore, it doesn’t feel like work for me. I put in seven days a week at this, and usually 12-hour days,” he says. He followed his dream, eventually launching Grigg’s Group, a real estate group with a portfolio of high-end properties.

MEETING THE ALTMAN BROTHERS

More than a decade ago, Grigg met Josh and Matt Altman. They, too, were luxury realtors, who would go on to become household names thanks to Bravo TV’s show Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles. In late 2023, the three formed a partnership, naming it Grigg’s Group Powered By The Altman Brothers. “Our partnership with the Grigg’s Group came about more than 10 years in the making,” says Matt. “We referred many clients to Scott, and he did the same to us, and that started a business relationship that became a best friendship. Finding someone you can trust the way we do Scott and the Grigg’s Group, along with his previous sales as being one of the top agents in Arizona, just felt like the natural next step. We vacation together, so we may as well work together.” “We have been friends for over 12 years now and have referred hundreds of deals back and forth between California and Arizona in that time,” Grigg says. “We have even done the show many times together. We have a mutual respect for each other, share the same work ethic, and always operate on a handshake. Coming out of Covid, we really saw our luxury home prices increase and get closer to California pricing. At that time, it finally made sense for us to merge and bring a global experience to how luxury real estate is done in Arizona.”

WORKING WITH FAMILY

They may all be best friends now, but Matt says it wasn’t always such a perfect relationship between him and Josh. “We were the reason people in Boston stopped having children from the years of 1976-1990,” he jokes about their constant fighting. “We were terrible kids and appreciate our parents so much as we are now parents, too. It wasn’t till the summer Josh went to the gym and became stronger than me that I decided to call a truce. From that point on, we have been best friends and business partners. Couldn’t dream of a better turnout, being able to build everything together. “The best part of working together now is that we trust each other 100%. That is literally impossible unless you work with a sibling. We also both married realtors, so that also allows our wives to understand our crazy schedules.” Of course, although the Altmans get along so well, they are complete opposites, Matt shares. “Josh is the serious one, and [I am] the funny one,” he says. “One drives a Rolls-Royce, and the other drives a Ford truck. We are each other’s yin and yang, and as similar as we are in many ways, we also couldn’t be more different. A perfect example is Josh goes to the gym every morning at 6 a.m. [I hate] working out and have a friend named Jim instead.”

THEIR PATHS TO REAL ESTATE

While Grigg always knew he wanted to be in real estate, the career path for the Altmans was less direct. “Growing up, as most kids do, we dreamed of being professional athletes,” Matt shares. “We were both very talented to make it to play Division 1 college football as kickers at the University of Colorado [Matt] and Syracuse University [Josh] when they were both top programs. Unfortunately, we weren’t good enough to make it to the NFL so we had to find a different path in life.” Matt became a talent agent at The Gersh Agency and CAA (Creative Artist Agency), and Josh ran a mortgage company. Their client list includes the who’s who of Hollywood, including Kim Kardashian, James Cameron, Calvin Harris, Scooter Braun, Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, Tyler Perry, and many more. “We both loved seeing houses on the weekend to make goals for ourselves of what we wanted in the future,” Matt says. “We started to flip homes and became very successful doing that as a weekend job—to the point we started making more money than our day jobs. So, we decided to leave our previous careers and jump into real estate full time.”

BEING ON TV

Real estate has been good to the Altmans. In 2023 they sold $1.15 billion worth of real estate ($7.5 billion in their career). They’ve been ranked the top team in California for the past three years and in the top five in the country. Just last year alone they sold the most expensive house ever in Brentwood for $65 million, the second most expensive house in the history of the Pacific Palisades for $50 million, the most expensive sale in the history of Encino for $20 million, and the most expensive sale in Hancock Park for $20 million. Their client list includes the who’s who of Hollywood, including Kim Kardashian, James Cameron, Calvin Harris, Scooter Braun, Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, Tyler Perry, and many more. And, of course, there’s been Bravo TV’s Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles, which follows the lives of Josh, Matt, and Heather Altman. “Million Dollar Listing has been an incredible blessing and platform for us to become some of the most well-known realtors on the planet,” Matt says.

CREATING THE PARTNERSHIP

Today, as the Grigg’s Group Powered By The Altman Brothers, the three are bringing their combined impressive knowledge, reach, and clients together to create a global force.

“We saw a void in the luxury market in Arizona, and this new endeavor allows us to not only bridge the gap between Arizona and California, but also offer a truly global pedestal for our listings with outreach to foreign markets—something that has not yet been offered here locally,” says Grigg. Grigg had already carved a niche for himself in the local luxury market—he even was able to successfully sell a Paradise Valley home for just under $13 million as the third agent to have the listing—and with this partnership, he says the team is now “a global brokerage offering a platform and database never offered before in the Greater Phoenix area.” “We love Scottsdale,” Matt says. “We’re also sending so much business from California buyers looking to either relocate for tax advantages, for weather, or to find second homes. We’re here all the time. With The Altman Brothers, you have the advantage of having two very similar people that almost share a brain, so one of us is there every other week with Scott.”

SCOTTSDALE

Grigg may have grown up in Scottsdale and stayed in the Valley for college, but he’s not tired of the area yet. “Arizona has such a great quality of life, with so many things to do and sunshine 365 days a year,” he says. “I would not live anywhere else.” The Altman Brothers agree. “We love Old Town and the food,” says Matt. “There are so many amazing places, but if we’re in town, you’ll usually spot us having breakfast at The Henry and dinners at Mastro’s. We are there for the Barrett-Jackson auctions, as we are huge car buffs, as well as golfing, as we always have fun with so many friends and clients living in Arizona.” TheAltmanBrothersGriggsAZ.com

DIVING INTO A DREAM For Marissa Heerdt, the Sky’s the Limit as an Artist

ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY SOPHIA DUBOIS

Marissa Heerdt knew early on that she loved art. But her road to being a full-time artist took a few twists, turns, and even airplanes. “When I was a teenager—or maybe a little younger than that—my mom was employed by my dad’s advertising agency as an art director. She was very artsy, and I took a lot of inspiration from her,” she says. “And as a kid, I would always draw or paint or make things. I took art classes throughout high school and then majored in it in college.” After college, Heerdt worked as a high school art teacher, but after a few years, she realized it wasn’t the best fit. “Around that time, a friend of mine asked if I wanted to go skydiving,” she says. She did and realized that she loved it—so much so that she left teaching to work in the skydiving industry. So that she could quickly distinguish her gear from other people’s, Heerdt dusted off her artistic background and painted a design on her helmet. The eye-catching art drew attention. “People saw it, and it kind of snowballed into a business,” she shares. CONTINUED >

Heerdt had grown up and was living in Illinois but began traveling the country, going to various skydiving destinations, and offering to paint people’s gear. One of her requests for a painted helmet was serendipitous—it came from a man named Bill, whom she would later marry. In 2018, the couple moved to Arizona. Heerdt briefly went back to teaching, but by early 2023, she was missing being an artist, and the draw of entrepreneurship was calling to her. By that March, she had found a space in Carefree that she felt would make a perfect gallery and workspace. In late 2023, Heerdt opened Compass & Crow Studios. The destination allows her to display examples of her artwork—most of her work is custom—and a range of skills, while providing an area where she could also create. “My work is custom-tailored to each client and what they want, so any artwork you see in the space are samples of what I can do or what I’m capable of, but I do mostly custom artwork for clients,” she explains. Today, Heerdt specializes in helmets of any kind, golf clubs, and canvas art, and she even completed an 8-foot door mural she was commissioned for this past summer. “The client’s imagination is the only thing I’m limited by,” Heerdt shares. “We can get as creative and crazy as they want. I’m not tied to a surface to paint on. “My specialty is any type of skull or bone,” she continues. “I love painting skulls. But I also do landscapes, and I can do pet portraiture. I do anything except for human portraits. I can also recreate business logos.” Heerdt’s artwork is colorful and detail-oriented, and has been likened to a cross between illustration and tattoo art. Heerdt also works closely with each client to ensure the process is collaborative. “I’m very communicative with my clients,” she says. “I make sure they’re very involved in the process, and I send pictures and videos every step of the way so that they feel they were very involved.” For her, this has been the perfect venture. “I love working with my clients, and I’ve met some really wonderful people through my business,” she says. In addition to being an artist, Heerdt has many other creative outlets for which she’s passionate. “I love to knit, I love training my dog, I’m a master gardener, I’m a certified herbalist, and I’m a rare aroid plant collector,” she shares. And while she and Bill don’t skydive much anymore, the sky’s now the limit for Compass & Crow Studios. CompassAndCrowStudios.com

CRAIG AND GINGER SCHMERSAL ON EVERYTHING FROM HORSE REINING TO TELEVISION SHOWS TO COMPETITIONS Craig Schmersal

REINING KING OF ‘YELLOWSTONE’ 30

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | S P ORTS + RE CRE AT ION

For more than 30 years, Craig and Ginger Schmersal have harnessed their equine talents and passions into a thriving career. With clients all over the globe, they train and show horses, run clinics, and are among the most well-known on the circuit. Their work

reining horses, for eight years. When Sheridan came up with the concept for Yellowstone, which stars Kevin Costner and revolves around the owners of a large family-owned Montana ranch, he wrote in the reining horses. “He’s always writing horses into his

“IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT HORSE AND CAN COMPETE, YOU CAN WIN ...” keeps them on the road for roughly half the year, and it has taken them across the United States and all over Europe. You could say they’ve become ambassadors of a uniquely Western American way of life through reining, considered a Western form of dressage that has its origins in rounding up cattle. However, they have received a new and different kind of boost thanks to Yellowstone, the hit television show that features a few horses trained by Craig, a longtime horse trainer for the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan. “A lot of people across the world have a love for horses, and with the TV show, it’s rekindled a bit of flame in a lot of people,” Craig says. Craig has been a horse trainer and coach for Sheridan, an actor and filmmaker with an affinity for

scripts and he wanted to bring more awareness to reining,” Ginger says. “He asked a few of his friends and trainers to participate in Yellowstone, and it’s kind of exploded. We were fortunate to have been included!” Through their Schmersal Reining Horses business, the Schmersals handle breeding, showing, and everything in between. However, preparing clients’ horses for competitions is the bulk of the job. Craig’s personal accomplishments in reining have made him the third all-time leading money-earning rider in the world. And he’s thrilled to give clients this kind of success. “It’s rewarding to start with horses that have never been ridden before and take them to a level of competition that’s really high,” Craig says. Oklahoma native Ginger met Ohio native Craig in Arizona in the early 1990s, when they were working with the same Scottsdale horse trainer. Both had been riding since elementary school and were up and coming in the industry. Ginger was showing and riding competitively as a nonprofessional, and Craig was doing the same but as a pro. When they got married and started a family, Ginger moved into the role of running the business and behind-thescenes tasks, while Craig trained and showed horses. “Ginger takes care of logistics. I get the fun part,” Craig says. “That’s why it’s nice when I win because I know how much she sacrificed.” Married for 25 years, the Schmersals have four children who grew up riding and competing. Their youngest daughter Addi, 18, earned a full-ride scholarship to Auburn University, well-respected for its equine academia and horse-performing activities. “The neat thing about reining is that it doesn’t make a difference if you’re a man or a woman. If you have the right horse and can compete, you can win, and that’s pretty awesome,” Ginger says.

“GINGER TAKES CARE OF LOGISTICS. I GET THE FUN PART.” Craig and Ginger are also in the main cast of the reality show The Last Cowboy, featured on CMT, which is in its fourth season and follows their lives through the circuits of showing horses. In 2019, Craig tied to win the season’s culmination, The Run For A Million in Las Vegas, taking home more than $300,000 in prize money. While nice, however, it’s not all about the money. “The best part of my job is that we do it as a family. All our kids are involved in some capacity,” Ginger says. “Not many people get to work with their families and make the living we do.” Craig agrees. “I get to do what I love, compete at a high level, and watch my daughter and boys compete successfully,” Craig says. “There are a lot of tiny rewards. I don’t always have to win to be happy.” CraigSchmersal.com Craig and Ginger Schmersal

Tales to Tell

Meet Marshall Shore, the Hip Historian Who Has a Passion for the Past and a Gift of Storytelling

TAC E G “I ST PAR HIL TS L F BE OF RO A SM THE” TORY.

Everyone has that special something that they are so passionate about that they are compelled to share it with strangers. For Marshall Shore, that something is a good story. So it’s not surprising that a former librarian has found his calling telling tales for a living as the Hip Historian. Shore has built a following with his engaging delivery of a subject that often puts people to sleep. His ability to capture the best nuggets of historical events and play them up before an audience in an extremely palpable manner has put Shore in a unique modern-day niche. “I love telling stories and finding stories,” Shore says. “The research and theater of it is the attraction. This is what I live for.” After spending nearly a decade as a librarian in New York City, Shore moved to Arizona, where his parents had retired. He landed a librarian position

in South Phoenix, at Seventh Avenue and Buckeye Road. And of course, it didn’t take long for the natural-born storyteller to find a treasure trove of tales just by interacting with everyone around him. His talent for spinning a yarn also turned a bland account into an audible adventure that kept listeners riveted. “I kept hearing stories and I’d retell them,” Shore says. “I like to shine a light into so many communities and also help people find their own stories.” Quickly, Shore’s hobby became his full-time gig. His professional moniker was bestowed on him by Karen Churchard, former Arizona Department of Tourism assistant deputy director, who came up with it spontaneously while promoting him during the state’s centennial celebrations in 2012. Much of his time is spent on fact-finding and chatting with people over coffee. What draws Shore in are not commonly known facts or details. He delves into the hidden bits and pieces that are just as, if not more, compelling to audiences. “They are a mix of people who’ve been here for a long time wanting to remember, as well as those trying to know the community and why this place is so unique and different from anywhere else,” Shore says. Growing up in the town of Odell, Indiana, Shore relished any opportunity to indulge in his passion. “Even giving directions was more of a storytelling. It was always about the story rather than giving directions. Friends said I would talk to a stump,” Shore says with a chuckle. “If it had a good story, I would.” With a bachelor’s degree in communications from Purdue University and a master’s in library science from Indiana State University, Shore is effectively using his formal education in a career he loves. “I get a chill from the best parts of a story,” says Shore, who will be experiencing this often as he speaks to crowds this month, Arizona’s birthday month. But there’s another aspect of his art that gives him a thrill. “When a mom comes up to me and says, ‘We listen to you and my kid loves what you do,’” Shore says. “I just love the fact that I’m encouraging so many folks to look at what was here first.” HipHistorian.com

ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS

Reservations For Two Dreamy destinations for couples looking to get away.

Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!

Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. Much like marriage! But, waking up in a faraway place, exploring unknown terrain together, and leaving your routine and all its trappings behind can be therapeutic. You both can take on new roles and release tired habits.

1

Write new vows over lunch or take a random nap because you can.

2

Share planning and talk about your goals for the trip. Do you want to completely unplug or will one of you need excellent wifi to call into a few meetings?

3

If you’re parents, consider setting boundaries for texting and phone calls so you can put the phone away and immerse in one another. Let the kids know you will be checking your phone at a certain time each day (and stick to that). Let the grandparents or caregivers handle the day to day drama.

4

Take turns charting a course for the day. On day one, you check museum opening times, get the timed tickets and find a nearby spot for a healthy lunch. On day two, you sit back and let your partner call the Uber and source out the perfect shopping district, walking distance to a park. Enjoy the ride, either way.
