I’m writing this as I’m on an airplane headed to Europe on our biggest family trip yet. It’s early July, and I know that in a few short weeks—when this magazine hits your mailbox—summer will be over (not in temperature or actual calendar date but in the kids-are-back-in-school way). How is it August already? I don’t know about you, but to me, the summers tend to feel like they go faster and faster. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. In our family, we all quickly miss the lazy days of less responsibility; the evenings spent in the pool; and the extra family time that is spent hanging out at home, rather than carpooling to activities. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special, and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, we are highlighting kids who are making a difference in our community. Check out Dylan Capshaw, who opened Stemistry flower and coffee shop while just a teenager. And, find out how you can pamper your pet around town (um, hello, Royal Palms!). We also share the story of a family business, a barge cruise in France, and more. Enjoy the month!

letter from the PUBLISHER
As I write this, I am sitting and daydreaming about our annual family summer trip that is to begin next week. Every summer we take a whole month to go exploring with our boys in our RV. It has been a family tradition for the past six years! There is so much that goes into this every year—planning, packing, making sure all the bases are covered in our absence, etc. Truthfully, it’s a ton of work. Some think it’s crazy that the six of us leave for that long on the road, packed into our cozy home on wheels, but we treasure our adventures together! After all, the days are numbered while our boys are still under our roof (in fact, our oldest is now preparing to leave for college this fall), so the way we see it … carpe diem! The summer months are a great time to take advantage of time away from the everyday grind of life. It’s so important to get out and live life to the fullest and enjoy some downtime. I hope you are getting a chance to unplug a bit and get some well-deserved R&R to recharge and spend time for yourself and with those you love most. Perhaps you are escaping the summer heat or just hanging around at home. At the very least, take a little time to sit back, realx, and read this month’s issue, which is filled with easygoing and enjoyable content to allow your mind to escape a bit. Cheers! Be grateful, be kind, and live well, Tammy Fellows Owner/Publisher

The Sweet Smell of Success AT 16, STEMISTRY OWNER DYLAN CAPSHAW IS ALREADY AN ENTREPRENEURIAL VETERAN
ARTICLE BY GEORGANN YARA PHOTOGRAPHY BY SOPHIA DUBOIS
Most business owners don’t prepare a PowerPoint presentation for their parents as a requirement to start their business. However, high schooler Dylan Capshaw did just that in order to open Stemistry, his flower shop and coffee bar that debuted this spring. Capshaw was 15 when he recognized an opportunity to take his thriving online flower shop to the next brick-and-mortar level. Because his parents would be the ones to sign the lease, their approval was vital. The success of his online blossom shop GardenMisc, which he started at 14, enabled him to demonstrate that he could make his coffee shop dream a reality. Capshaw did not spend a single penny of the six figures in revenue that GardenMisc generated from more than 10,000 sales. This and his work ethic were very convincing. “I turned a space in our garage into a shipping station. They saw me boxing and sending out orders. They saw the dedication,” says Capshaw, now 16, who enlisted the guidance of an accountant and business attorney. “We ran the numbers … that was the final push. My parents signed the lease.” CONTINUED >

“To walk in and see a full store with everyone having coffee, laughing and happy, that’s by far the most rewarding aspect of it.” — DYL AN CAPSHAW
Stemistry made Capshaw perhaps the youngest owner of a retail store in the nation. It also allowed GardenMisc to merge into Stemistry. His proven business acumen drew interest from potential investors, which he declined. “Luckily, I watched a lot of Shark Tank, so I learned not to take on early investors,” Capshaw says with a chuckle. In 2017, he started the nonprofit Dylan Capshaw Wildlife Foundation, a sanctuary that has rescued hundreds of exotic animals. In 2020, along with GardenMisc, Capshaw started For the Frontline, a nonprofit that creates 3-D-printed reusable face shields and face masks for first responders, and The Sanitation Station, a for-profit company of PPE vending machines. “I was out of [in-person] school. I had lots of time on my hands,” the Rancho Solano Preparatory School junior says. “I really like to stay busy. I was never one to sit and watch TV.” His interest in flowers was sparked by his sanctuary’s exotic plants and flowers. He sold them in creative ways, and it caught on. But coffee was always his passion. The obsession with making fun cappuccinos and latte art led to his parents getting him a nice

espresso machine. He used it to hone his skills and, ultimately, open a flower and coffee shop under one roof. “It’s not even about making money. It’s about starting a business and concepts that are cool ideas,” Capshaw says. When Capshaw interviewed employee candidates, he was upfront about his age, asking if they’d be comfortable working for someone half their age. Some laughed it off. But others liked Stemistry’s model and believed in Capshaw. “I’m learning so much about running a business because of my staff. Some have more experience than years I’ve been alive, and I see them as mentors and partners rather than employees,” Capshaw says. The sight on a Saturday, Stemistry’s busiest day, or feedback from a customer who is thrilled the shop is in the neighborhood, gives Capshaw a rush that no amount of caffeine could. “To walk in and see a full store with everyone having coffee, laughing and happy, that’s by far the most rewarding aspect of it,” Capshaw says. “I always get so much joy from creating a welcoming atmosphere like that.” Stemistry.com

THE PIANO STORE SCOTTSDALE OFFERS A ONE-OF-A-KIND MUSICAL SHOPPING EXPERIENCE
30
A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | ARTS + CULTURE
Learning how to play the piano is often a rite of passage—and while we have multiple entertainment options at our fingertips, millions of families across the U.S. have pianos in their homes. One place to go for all things piano is The Piano Store Scottsdale, part of the PianoNation family of brands. The shop is one of the most technologically advanced piano experiences in the Valley. “We value tradition. We value craftsmanship. And most importantly, we value what the piano provides for the family. It’s all about bringing your family together around the piano,” says Todd Brown, the owner of PianoNation. Brown has been in the piano industry in retail, wholesale, and manufacturing since the ’90s. He says that with the latest technology, pianos are more approachable, high-tech, and userfriendly than ever before. “PianoNation has been interested in technology since the beginning of when pianos and QRS technology started to merge,” he explains. Brown’s goal is to bring energy to an industry that, in many ways, has not changed a whole lot in 150 years. “The mechanics of the piano as an instrument haven’t changed, nor will they,” he says. “But the technology we now have to bring these pianos to life is absolutely incredible.” Through QRS PNOmation technology, any piano can be turned into a wireless smart home entertainment device—able to play a variety of songs at any time with real moving keys.
“This technology can play your piano anytime, 24 hours a day,” Brown explains. “For example, you can be watching a movie on your TV and the piano can be set up to play the piano parts of the movie score.” For those who may be hesitant about the technology, he says that when piano students take lessons with a traditional piano teacher—and are assisted by technology—they learn and retain their musical skills faster. “We don’t just sell pianos to individual families, but to schools, concert halls, and more. For example, students can play and record their songs and their instructors can re-play their songs hours later to grade them,” he says. The Piano Store Scottsdale not only sells quality new and used pianos, but also offers a myriad of other services, including restoration, tuning, technology installation, and more. “Our Scottsdale store is second to none. Larry Bateman, the head of the store, has 50 years of experience and literally wrote the book on how to purchase a piano and will educate locals on what to look for in one,” he continues. “He knows as much about pianos as anyone on the planet. In addition to Larry, the Scottsdale store has a talented, youthful team working day-in and day-out. “We hope everyone comes in and checks The Piano Store out—it’ll blow your mind when you see all of the pianos we have available,” Brown continues. “It’s like walking into a piano gallery—it’s the most fun you’ll ever have coming to a piano store.” ThePianoStoreAZ.com

An AAA Four Diamond resort, there is plenty to do here, whether you seek a relaxing retreat or an active getaway. Ready to dive in? Stay cool in one of the resort’s five pools, or spend time floating down the 1,600-linear-foot Lazy River. Guests can also channel their inner child with a ride down the 89-foot serpentine slide. Meanwhile, sport lovers will enjoy the 17 pickleball courts, five tennis courts, and 26 holes of championship golf at Wildfire Golf Club. Bike rentals are also available, along with convenient access to nearby hiking and fitness trails. Those traveling with kids should explore the Family Escape Center, where children ages 4-12 are offered a variety of recreational activities, games, crafts, and seasonally themed night parties.

CRUISING ESCAPE FOR A LEISURELY BARGE CRUISE ALONG FRANCE'S CANAL DU MIDI
IN T HE SOU T H OF F R A NCE
There is something a bit magical about the South of France. It conjures images of rolling hills set along the Mediterranean, vast vineyards and olive trees swaying in the breezes. The images come to life when you book a luxury barge cruise with European Waterways (EuropeanWaterways.com). It offers the perfect opportunity to experience the region’s slow pace. Canal du Midi is a 330-year-old canal that runs from the Mediterranean coast inland through the famous Languedoc wine region. This is an opportunity for a true escape from everyday life.
WHAT IS A BARGE CRUISE? Barges, originally used to shuttle goods along the inner waterways throughout Europe, are now floating hotels. European Waterways operates barges from April to October. One of three boats to traverse Canal du Midi, Enchanté is an “ultra-deluxe” converted barge with four cabins for up to eight passengers. Each suite on Enchanté features an ensuite bathroom. All suites are on the lower level, while the salon, dining room, open kitchen, and sun deck are above. The rooms are comfortable and quiet, the staff accommodating, and the pace of the barge allows you to slow down and unwind. In fact, the barge moves slowly along the canal, giving passengers a chance to stroll along or ride one of the onboard bicycles.

THE BARGING EXPERIENCE The barging experience is not anything like other cruises. With only eight passengers (although some boats have the capacity for 10 to 20 passengers), it provides a quiet escape. Each day, you cruise slowly along the canal, going a total distance of about 50 miles over one week. The day’s leisurely routine begins with a sit-down breakfast and specially prepared dishes from the chef. You either cruise in the morning and take a short excursion in the afternoon, or vice versa. Lunch is a gourmet three-course meal paired with local wines. Dinner is a beautiful production with appetizers, main course, cheese course, and dessert. Again, everything is paired with both a white and red wine.
EXCURSIONS ALONG THE WAY Throughout the cruise, there are small stops along the way. This area of France is filled with gourmet delights and history, and you have a chance to explore both during your cruise. You’ll visit l’Oulibo, a high-end olive oil producer growing Lucques olives. Enjoy a tasting of the oils and the olives, and pick up a few to take home. Another day, you’ll taste local balsamic vinegar. This is a real treat and a unique experience sampling a variety of flavors. During the barge cruise, you’ll have a chance to visit three of what may be the most beautiful towns in France: Minerve, Lagrasse, and Carcassonne. Lagrasse is an artisan town surrounding an 8th-century Benedictine Abbey. Minerve is home to a 12th-century Cathar fort with spectacular views. Carcassonne is a medieval fortified city with 52 watchtowers and portcullis. There is also an excursion to Narbonne, once a Roman capital. There, you’ll have a chance to wander through Les Halles de Narbonne—the indoor food market—with the chef, picking out items for him to prepare once back onboard Enchanté. European Waterways offers the ideal escape to Southern France and other destinations across Europe.

All About Family Jeremy Mueller Carved Out His Own Space in the Insurance Industry by Going Above and Beyond After 20 years helming his own agency, you could say insurance is in Jeremy Mueller’s blood. But the Scottsdale native, whose State Farm agency celebrated its 20th anniversary last December, has a professional lineage that proves it. Mueller’s father is an insurance agent, and his grandfather was an insurance agent—all with State Farm. “I’m a third-generation insurance agent but I’m also a third-generation State Farm agent,” Mueller says with a smile, acknowledging the pedigree. “I always say, ‘I bleed State Farm red.’” Mueller was always fascinated by advertising and marketing and had a talent for economics. Initially, while earning his marketing and economics degrees from Arizona State University, his sights were not set on going into the insurance business. But the industry was never far from family conversations while he was growing up. And after Mueller dabbled in the food and hotel industries, he realized the calling and decided to dive in. However, his professional heritage yielded no benefits. The natural customer base of friends and family were already insured. Looking back, however, Mueller views it as an asset. “It really enabled me to figure out marketing and get my name out and make my own brand in the State Farm family,” he says. The insurance veteran who got his start with State Farm in 1999, did that with deep involvement in the North Scottsdale community he calls home professionally and personally.
It’s not unusual for Mueller to be approached while at a grocery store or restaurant by a customer who is grateful that Mueller saved them money or helped them navigate a complicated situation. “I take the responsibility very seriously and am truly humbled by the community’s trust in me,” Mueller says. His hospitality experience has also made a difference. Providing heightened service is par for the course. This includes going to a body shop to make sure a claim is running smoothly behind the scenes and other steps that most agents would not leave an office for. “I love going the extra mile for customers. A lot of people don’t like dealing with insurance companies. We try to bring that extra level of care and I owe my sense of service to the hospitality industry,” he says. “We try to do the little touches to make the process run a little more smoothly.” In his spare time, Mueller enjoys reading, exercising, and spending time with his children, ages 15 and 11. Helming one of the larger State Farm agencies in the nation, Mueller’s team of 12 fully licensed agents span two locations in the North Scottsdale community. “To be able to build the business from zero clients to where we are one of Scottsdale’s most trusted insurance companies has been very rewarding,” Mueller says. The third-generation insurance pro goes on to talk about serving his own second-generation insurance clients. “But it’s also rewarding seeing the kids of parents you helped 20 years ago buy their first home and protect their legacy.” JeremyMueller.com

The initial theme at Pop Up Bar is 50 Shades of Rosé.
Picture Perfect Experience the New, Instagrammable Pop Up Bar
“Old Town Scottsdale is an incredibly unique area that offers pretty much everything, but the one thing it’s missing is a bar that continuously surprises customers,” says Ben Foreman, co-owner of the new Pop Up Bar in Scottsdale. “Pop Up Bar allows us to move with the trends and demands of our customers. We executed a business model that will never go stale and keep people guessing when it comes to decor, drinks, and the menu.” The one-of-a-kind concept, which opened last month, is an experiential establishment that will continuously change its concept throughout the year. “Pop-ups have become increasingly popular across the country, but Pop Up Bar is completely different because it’s a permanent location with an ever-changing theme,” Foreman explains. “Our overall goal was to keep people on their toes. Whether they’re local or visiting, they can always expect something new at the same location.”

The initial theme is 50 Shades of Rosé, and features original art installations that bring the building to life; a blush bar with unique combinations of colors, textiles, and fabrics that transform the space; a curated bar; and a scratch kitchen with a seasonal menu. “We spared no expense when it comes to details, including tens of thousands of flowers that cover the walls, a unique piano that serves as a focal point, as well as an incredibly gorgeous bar with quartz countertops and pink blush tiles that give off Garden of Eden vibes. Our original drinks are whimsical and fit the decor, while our brunch menu is sure to impress. Let’s just say we did everything in our power to make sure this place is always buzzin’,” says Justin Massey, co-owner. Pop Up Bar is open Thursdays through Sundays. PopUpBarAZ.com

Her goal as she began her journey was only to help support the food industry and to try to shine a spotlight on all the amazing things happening in town. She had no idea that taking pictures of food and posting on social media would lead to it being a career.
