Raise your hand if you could use some R&R. I mean, let’s be honest—who couldn’t? Did you know that there’s a major historic destination on the outskirts of the Valley that focuses on just that? Castle Hot Springs is a wellness resort that marries luxury with serenity and rest for the ultimate in relaxation. Soak in the ancient hot springs, dine on true farm-to-table food, and be pampered. I’m ready to go back. In this issue we also feature a 3D-printed house. Yes, this home was mostly built from a printer! It’s very special—a Habitat for Humanity home that was designed by Candelaria Design Associates. Who would have thought years ago that you could actually print a home? Our story gives you a glimpse into this first-of-its-kind destination in Arizona. Following that eco-friendly thread, did you know that you can make handbags from cactus? You can, and we feature some on these pages. Check out PXG’s cactus leather handbags—they’re stylish, sustainable, and functional. We also showcase unique, show-stopping drinks (hello, smoke!), so get ready to raise a glass. From travel to home to drinks and more, I hope you enjoy the stories in this issue!

PUBLISHER We are in a unique time. I’m not sure about you, but I believe that the stars align in specific ways that can certainly have an effect on things. For me, it’s a shift in connection and awareness. I recently found my word for the year. The word I embrace and practice daily is “discover.” The best part about it is I am truly learning and discovering so much! As I write this, I have a clear mindset on what is possible. This mindset stems from my daily meditation practice. The best thing about it is that it lends itself to opportunity and genuine openness to the people and things in the world around me that matter most. It’s as if a shift has happened and people—myself included—are waking up to their surroundings and connecting with those who resonate with this. Without trying to sound overly “kumbaya,” there really seems to be an energy shift toward people connecting, and it is refreshing. I encourage you to find solace in this time and seek out true connections to the community, the people, and the things that bring you joy. Be sure to stop and smell the roses! As for this month’s issue… Our cover story is all about finding serenity at an Arizona oasis, Castle Hot Springs—the perfect place to find solace and get some healthy R&R. You will also see a very unique architectural project with a 3D-printed home, designed by Candelaria Design Associates in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity! We’d also like to give a shoutout to our newest advertising partners: • Rainbow Ryders • Inspirato Real Estate We hope you enjoy. Happy reading! Be grateful, be kind, and live well! Innovation & Collaboration Candelaria Design Associates Works With Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona to Design the State’s First 3D-Printed House

Architect Mark Candelaria founded Candelaria Design Associates more than 20 years ago on the principle that the design process should be a collaborative venture. Since then, he and his team have led custom residential and boutique architectural projects all over the world. Recently, a project close to home allowed them to use their talents to help others and be part of a game-changing innovation in home construction. As a board member for Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona, Candelaria is well aware of how the lack of affordable housing is at an alltime high in the Phoenix metro area. Because of this, the nonprofit and the City of Tempe are open to finding innovative, scalable, and affordable homeownership solutions. One potential answer to this crisis may be found in the 3D printing of homes—an innovative approach to which Candelaria Design was eager to lend its expertise. “We designed the 3D home using our CAD software. We had to create completely new code to fit the 3D printer that literally ‘prints’ concrete,” says Candelaria, who worked closely with Candelaria Design Architect Damon Wake on the project. (Wake was the project manager.) “The planning and design happened all over Zoom calls and was a really successful collaborative experience due to the communication and effort of everyone involved.” The new 3D-printed home project is a single-family home with three bedrooms and two baths, located in Tempe. The livable space is 1,738 square feet, and the total project is 2,433 square feet. Seventy percent of the home is 3D printed, including all internal and external walls. The remainder of the house is a traditional build. CONTINUED >

In addition to Candelaria Design and Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona, other participating partners include Habitat for Humanity International, the City of Tempe, PERI, 3D Construction, Cox, Lowe’s, the Ramsey Social Justice Foundation, and more. “This is really a moonshot opportunity for Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona,” says Jason Barlow, president and CEO of Habitat Central Arizona. “When we consider the housing issues facing Arizona, the need for affordable homeownership solutions becomes clear. If we can deliver decent, affordable, more energy-efficient homes at less cost, in less time, and with less waste, we think that could be a real game-changer. Think of the implications.” Dusty Parsons , director of marketing and media for Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona, shares that the local branch of the national nonprofit was approached with the unique idea in October 2019. The 3D printer had to be shipped across the globe from PERI in Germany. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the teams involved had to be flexible and creative. “The lack of affordable housing in the Phoenix metro area is a major issue and 3D printing is a unique way to address the issue,” Parsons explains. After the design process, construction on the home began in May 2021 and the
house was just completed this spring. Parsons adds that Habitat hopes this technology can be widely adopted and scaled to address the acute affordability issue. Both Candelaria and Parsons note that the family that will move into the newly built home was an integral part of the building process. “At Habitat, we require families to put 400 hours of ‘sweat equity’ into the home-building process—but they put in so much more,” Parsons says. “They were so gracious and patient through the whole process.” “We met the family and they were involved in all different aspects of building this home. They value this house and are so appreciative,” Candelaria says. “Teamwork made this all happen.” In addition to their work with Habitat, Candelaria Design has also worked with the Colten Cowell Foundation, GiGi’s Playhouse Phoenix, Ryan House, Scottsdale Arts, Scottsdale Charros, the Dream Center Network, and many other local nonprofits. “A big aspect of who we are is giving back to the community,” Candelaria says. “There are endless ways to give back and we encourage everyone with the time or talent to do so.” CandelariaDesign.com; HabitatCAZ.org

WHOLE PERSON DESIGN FOR SUSTAINABLE LUXURY LIVING
26
M UST SE E | HOM E + D ES I GN
FUSE LIVING Shannon Harris knew there was a better way to build homes. “Sustainability is important to me. I was into healthy homes and the air quality of homes,” she says. “My initial concept was to flip homes and turn them into green homes.” She founded Fuse Living as a sustainabilityfocused company in 2012. “All of our homes are LEED-certified, ensure the best air quality, and are sustainable.”
SUSTAINABLE LIVING Fuse Living is also a Certified Green Interior Design Firm through the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC). The Fuse Living team has had extensive SFC training learning about furniture materials, toxic materials, and what’s inside. They examine the manufacturing process, sourcing materials, and the full lifecycle. All materials they use must be FSC certified wood, recycled materials, or rapidly renewable resources. Vendors must ensure low or zero VOC paints, finishes, and dyes. There can be no flame-retardant chemicals or formaldehyde. Materials must be certified organic. Harris says they encourage alternative fibers, such as linen, hemp, abaca, and wool, and vendors must guarantee that workers earn a living wage. “At Fuse Living, we recognize that our natural world is paramount to our well-being,”
explains Harris. “We consider two symbiotic elements: the whole person and the environment. This understanding gives us a more optimal sense of being within our spaces.”
WHOLE-PERSON GREEN LIVING That whole-person concept at Fuse Living means they consider many aspects when creating a design: improving air quality, finding ways to control noise, introducing natural elements, and promoting beauty. “We incorporate restorative elements,” Harris explains. “This includes color theory, soft edges, and considering circadian rhythms when choosing how to light the home.” Discovering those individual needs is a fine-tuned process. The Fuse Living team walks customers through an initial discovery period to help clients find their interests. A consultation involves multiple designers, where clients answer questions about a typical day, leisure time, and the importance of eco-friendly approaches. Only then does Fuse Living begin the design process. “People are investing in their homes,” she explains. “I see people looking more at quality. They are considering design from a sustainable mindset. Doing things one time from a quality point of view is near and dear to me.” FuseLiving.com

SHARON STONE THE ACTRESS ON HER HEALTH CRISIS, THE DOCTOR WHO SAVED HER LIFE, BARROW NEUROLOGICAL INSTITUTE, AND WHAT SHE’S UP TO NOW
“I’M ABLE TO BE HERE … AND WALKING AND TALKING BECAUSE OF DR. L AW TON.” “I’m able to be here … and walking and talking because of Dr. Lawton,” says Sharon Stone. Stone, an actress, producer, and former fashion model, is known for films such as Casino and Basic Instinct. “Dr. Lawton saved my life,” she says simply. It was September of 2001 when the Emmy- and Golden Globe Award-winner, Nobel Peace Summit Award recipient, New York Times bestselling author, and activist was admitted to the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco after suffering a brain aneurysm that led to a massive stroke. “I had a stroke, described as a massive brain hemorrhage,” she says. Her chances of surviving surgery? Just 1%. But time was running out, and so Dr. Michael T. Lawton stepped in—and not only performed a successful surgery, but one that allowed Stone to make a full recovery. “The majority of people who go through what happened to me do not survive, let alone recover. I’m able to be here today walking and talking because of Dr. Lawton,” Stone says. “He not only saved my life, but he made a full life possible for me.” CONTINUED >

In 2017, Dr. Lawton took over as Barrow Neurological Institute’s president and CEO, bringing his expertise to the renowned Phoenix destination. He’s also the chair of the Department of Neurosurgery. And last June, Stone—who is now passionate about brain research—joined its foundation’s Board of Trustees. “I [joined the Board] not just because Barrow is the leading neuroscience institute in the world, but also because the president and CEO … is Michael T. Lawton, M.D., the same brilliant neurosurgeon who saved my life all those years ago,” she says. “This institute was and is the finest institute globally to be treated for these types of injuries. Anyone who has a brain injury would be in the finest hands that they can possibly be in at Barrow Neurological Institute.” “A brain aneurysm ruptures every 18 minutes in the U.S., and 40% of those ruptures are fatal. Two-thirds of survivors suffer permanent neurological deficits. The federal government currently only spends approximately 83 cents per year on brain aneurysm research for each person afflicted, which is simply not enough,” says Dr. Lawton. Over the past two decades since her surgery and recovery—she had to learn to walk, talk, and function again—Stone was busy raising her three adopted boys and acting in a variety of television and film projects. In 2006, she received the Nobel Peace Summit Award for her work with HIV/AIDS sufferers. She has also received a Harvard Humanitarian Award, a Human Rights Campaign Humanitarian Award, and an Einstein Spirit Award, as well as many other accolades. In May of 2021, her film Here Today—a comedy-drama directed by Billy Crystal and also starring Crystal and Tiffany Haddish—debuted in theatres. In 2021, she also published The Beauty of Living Twice, her memoir in which she speaks about her childhood, her rise in Hollywood, and her humanitarian efforts, as well as when she had her stroke. “Possibility made me write this book: the opportunity to grow & to share that growth. I have learned to forgive the unforgivable. My hope is that as I share my journey you too will learn to do the same,” she had said on Twitter around its release. The book was released in hardcover and as an ebook, and Stone narrated the story for its Audible edition. Up next? The movie currently titled Beauty, which is scheduled to be released this year. It tells the story of a talented “young Black woman who struggles to maintain her voice and identity after she’s offered a lucrative recording contract,” and stars Gracie Marie Bradley as Beauty. All this was possible due to the fact that “a brilliant neurosurgeon was able to pull off the nearly impossible surgery that gave me a second chance at life,” says Stone, who returned to Barrow last month to celebrate the opening of its new global headquarters, the Barrow Neuroplex.

The Passionista at Geordie's
A Sip and a Show EXPLORING SCOTTSDALE’S MORE EXPERIENTIAL COCKTAILS
We are not supposed to play with our food… but no one said anything about cocktails. Experiential cocktails—those offering a little show before the first sip—are hot right now, especially in Scottsdale.
ARTICLE BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Talking Stick Resort’s Orange Sky is among those leading the charge when it comes to this trend. Finally Infused ($18) is a perfect example. To make, the mixologists use a Japanese Yama Drip, a three-level infuser that allows guests to watch the ingredients— Hornitos Reposado Tequila with roasted pineapples and guajillo chilies—combine in real time. Once ready, the ultra-aromatic result is combined with lime juice and citrus syrup before being strained into a glass rimmed with smoked chili-lime salt and given a floater of Grand Marnier for contrast. “We are not supposed to play with our food… but no one said anything about cocktails.”
Geordie’s at Wrigley Mansion is also exploring playful liquid alchemy. Try The Passionista ($28), which was developed to honor afternoon tea aficionado Ada Wrigley (for whom Wrigley’s gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr. built the mansion for 100 years ago). This drink features yuzu-infused EFFEN Vodka, Aperol Aperitivo, Cointreau, passion fruit syrup, and lemon juice. Visually, it gets its tea-like look as much from an intricate clarification process and addition of smoke as the fine china into which it is poured. WrigleyMansion.com Taking the smoke concept in an entirely different—but similarly stimulating and successful—direction is Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen at Andaz Scottsdale, thanks to Et Tu, Brute ($17). While these are the famous last words of Julius Caesar, this cocktail is the perfect first sip to start a night out with friends or a date. Equal parts bitter and sweet, it is made with Sacred Stave Single Malt Whiskey, sweet vermouth, St. George Bruto Americano, and mole bitters. The kicker: It is served in a glass container that has been infused with smoke, only released once tableside. AndazScottsdale.com Similarly using a cocktail’s serving vessel to set the stage for the perfect sip is Diego Pops. Its Guava Coconut ($15) is all about transporting diners to a beach, somewhere.

What better way to get guests on island time than to mix up CÎROC™ Coconut vodka, coconut water, guava, and house sweet and sour, and then serve it in a real baby coconut (after it has been scooped and cleaned, of course!). DiegoPops.com Want to walk even farther on the wild side? Then don’t miss the over-the-top offerings at Starlite BBQ and Whiskey Bar. Among its best bets is Ribs and Rye ($13), a twist on an Old Fashioned. The cocktail starts with Rittenhouse Straight Rye Whisky, demerara syrup, mole bitters, and Bauchant Orange Liqueur. Then, house barbeque sauce is added before the guest’s eyes. The garnish? An actual barbequed baby back pork rib to nibble on between sips! StarliteBBQ.com Finally, there is The Americano, where the bar team devotes its time to adding shock, awe, and OMG to every cocktail on the menu. The Third Monk ($18) is right up there with most inventive and visual drinks of the moment. The groovy green machine, served on a backlight coaster so it glows in the dark, starts with mesquite honey and amaretto. It then gets an herbal-yet-sweet flavor infusion thanks to Chartreuse Yellow, and is shaken with an egg white being strained into a rocks glass for texture and to further bring out the stark hue. Hidden, Historic,
Luxurious The Oasis That is Castle Hot Springs
44
T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L
I was driving down a winding road through Arizona’s desert, and according to my GPS, I was just seven miles out from Castle Hot Springs when, suddenly, the paved road ahead of me ended. Stretching as far as I could view was a dirt road, strewn with rocks, and surrounded by stunning vistas and wide-open views of Lake Pleasant. While a helicopter ride into Castle Hot Springs can be arranged, the majority of guests at the resort—an oasis like no other—arrive via this dirt road. I was in good company. Others who have traversed this road to paradise have included the Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and Astor families; Presidents Teddy Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy; a host of celebrities and dignitaries from around the world; as well as Indigenous Peoples and cowboys. While the owners of Castle Hot Springs can certainly pave the road if they choose, its history and significance almost forbid it. It has become a literal transition from everyday life to an oasis in the desert—complete with ancient, healing hot springs—and a testament to its storied past. In the beginning, Indigenous Peoples traveled to the hot springs for medicinal purposes. Over the years the springs drew numerous guests, and eventually, an Arizona entrepreneur purchased the land to capitalize on the restoring benefits of the water and desert environment, building Arizona’s first wellness resort on the land in 1896. The arrival of railroads (just before the land was purchased) and later a train depot made accessing the destination easier, and everyone from celebrities to presidents arrived to stay at the secluded, stunning, and restorative property, which is nestled against the Bradshaw Mountains on 1,100 acres in a remote location northwest of the main metro Valley area. As you bump along the dirt road leading to Castle Hot Springs—which underwent reconstruction and development in 2019—it’s easy to feel as if you went back in time. There’s nothing but dirt, mountains, and the road ahead.

“It is absolutely incredible how so much of what is grown on the property is used in the true farm-to-table cuisine for the signature nourishing, flavorful, exquisite meals.”
And then, you see it. Castle Hot Springs. The dirt road ends at a gate with a callbox, and once you announce yourself, you’ve arrived. The gates swing open and a literal healing oasis lies ahead, a destination where the hustle and bustle of everyday life quickly becomes a distant memory. I arrived on property, checked in, and my car was whisked away. Here, every detail is attended to so that all you have to do is relax and recharge—whether that’s soaking in the springs, taking a yoga class or a mixology class, hiking, paddle boarding, sitting by the pool, or enjoying any of the other on-site activities. The first activity I experienced was a farm tour, where a group of us walked amongst the three-acre farm and toured the greenhouse. cuisine for the signature nourishing, flavorful, exquisite meals. (I’m still craving some of the dishes I enjoyed!) After that, I settled into my Sky View Cabin (perfectly positioned for stargazing), a private cabin that also featured a private outdoor tub. There are also the Spring Bungalows, where guests can bathe in the healing properties of the natural spring waters in a private, custom Sonoma stone tub, and The Cottage, the historic and impeccably restored near 100-year-old cottage. All are luxurious choices that will leave you wrapped in comfort and serenity. The mostly all-inclusive wellness resort embraces luxurious nature and healing, and encourages its guests to relax and unplug. I spent my time in yoga and meditation classes, taking a guided hike, touring the property, indulging with a spa treatment, and soaking in the hot springs.
Speaking of the springs, the ancient mineral-rich geothermal hot springs offer crystal-clear water to soak in, and the waters offer a wealth of wellness-boosting minerals. It is truly bliss. Other activities available at Castle Hot Springs include riding e-bikes or cruiser bikes, going horseback riding, trying your hand at archery, playing pickleball or bocce ball on the great lawn, experiencing Arizona’s first-ever Via Ferrata cable adventure course, and more. At the end of my few days on property, I was nourished and relaxed, and ready to face the world once again. I checked out and my car was already pulled around and waiting for me right outside the lobby. I took a deep breath and drove down the road to the entrance and pulled through the gates, beginning my journey back down the miles of unpaved road, transitioning back to the present. Stylish, modern, classy… and the ultimate in eco-conscience fashion. Meet the Cactus Leather Handbag Collection from PXG—Parsons Xtreme Golf—the cutting-edge global company founded by Bob Parsons that’s headquartered in Scottsdale. The collection includes six modular styles, including a duffle bag, tote bag, backpack, phone case bag, and sling bag, made to be functional, organizational, and stylish. There are adjustable straps and strap options, and subtle details such as gunmetal hardware dog tags add the modern and edgy vibe that is synonymous with PXG’s products. “My top priority for this handbag collection was to create a line of handbags designed thoughtfully with modular and adaptable functions, offering our customers various styles that are perfect for any occasion. Our bags are elevated, eco-conscious, versatile, and trend-driven,” says Renee Parsons, president and executive creative director of PXG Apparel. The Cactus Leather Handbag Collection is not only 100% vegan but regenerative—which
is the next-level in eco-conscience fashion, supporting circularity either through upcycling materials that are otherwise discarded or through the soil-to-soil cycle of regenerative agriculture. The nopal cactus species is hearty and grows quickly, and the same plant can be harvested every six to eight months. (Fun fact: It takes approximately three leaves of cactus to create one linear meter of this cactus leather.) PXG worked with the team at Desserto for its cactus leather to create the bags. “Cactus leather was the perfect ecoconscious material for our handbags, not only for its sustainable and self-generating nature, but also because PXG is based right here in the Sonoran Desert, surrounded by the desert prickly pear cactus. Partnering with Desserto was the obvious choice as they are the leader in this material and their brand ethos is aligned with PXG’s. We appreciate their incredible and unrelenting commitment to creating a material that does not sacrifice resource efficiency for quality,” she says. Find the bags at local PXG stores or at PXG.com.
