The Big Brown Wall
March 2022 PUBLISHER
Tammy Fellows | tammy.fellows@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Let me tell you a story about the big brown wall in my family room. You see it almost immediately when you walk into my house. It’s giant. And it’s ugly. In fact, the first thing my husband and I said when we were looking at this house before we bought it was—and I quote—“Wow, that’s ugly! Repainting that will be our first project right after we move in!” (Ahem, apologies to the previous owners if you’re reading this!) Fast-forward nine years. While we’ve done some renovations on our home, that ugly wall is still there, waiting to see what we’d do to the rest of the surrounding room so that the paint we’d pick would complement it. Life happens. The kids were young and needed a lot of attention. Then they were older and needed a lot of rides. Work was busy. The dog needed playtime. The hours, days, and years flew by. But (ugly wall aside) that is what made our house a home. The hustle and bustle, the love, and the dinners together (mostly) every night. Speaking of home, welcome to our Home Issue. How stunning is that home on our cover? Wow! Take a peek at the residence, which was designed by Drewett Works, in this issue. We also share some of the hottest kitchen and bath trends for 2022, backyard finds, the stories of some of the fabulous local foodie families, showcase a variety of celebrity drinks, and so much more. As for my house, we’re actually looking to truly renovate it now, and with it will finally come paint to that wall. Stay tuned.

THE M AG G I O R E FA M I LY The past two years have been among the busiest in the Maggiore family’s lives. “Navigating the pandemic was unprecedented territory for all restaurateurs,” says Joey Maggiore. “Beyond that, we weathered our biggest storm, emerging stronger than ever.” In January 2021, the family lost Tomaso Maggiore, the family patriarch and the founder of Tomaso’s. “We honor him each day by putting in the sweat equity it takes to nurture a growing culinary empire,” says Maggiore. Pre-pandemic, the family owned and operated Tomaso’s, as well as multiple locations of Hash Kitchen, The Sicilian Baker, and The Sicilian Butcher. During the pandemic, the family opened two new locations of The Sicilian Butcher, another Hash Kitchen, and also introduced two wholly new concepts. “My sister, Melissa, opened The Italian Daughter— with nods to our Sicilian-born father throughout the menu—in April 2021, and I opened The Mexicano—a buzzy Mexican eatery with over-the-top cocktails—in December,” says Maggiore.

The Lewkowicz family’s story begins in Argentina, where Gustavo “Gus” Lewkowicz was born. After moving to the United States as a child, Philip Lewkowicz saw his father find success in leather manufacturing. “My father entered into the family leather business, but also began teaching himself the art of cooking,” says Lewkowicz, adding that Gus would open Tribe American Leathers in Scottsdale in 1999, which he still operates today, before trying his hand at cooking professionally with the opening of Café Monarch in 2013. Among Trip Advisors’ top three fine dining destinations nationwide, Café Monarch is a family affair, with Gus and his wife Sofia as co-CEOs; their sons Philip and Christian as its CFO and COO, respectively; and Lewkowicz’s wife Megan as its event coordinator. Given their success, the family opened its second ultra-high-end concept, The Reserve, in 2020. The prix-fixe adventure is meant to awaken and epically delight all the senses.
THE COLLINS FA M I LY Starting in the 1930s, Robert Collins served as maître d’ of New York City’s Gallagher’s Steakhouse. “First opened as a speakeasy and still standing today, Gallagher’s was the brainchild of former Ziegfeld girl Helen Gallagher and colorful gambler Jack Solomon,” says Collins’ great-grandson Christopher Collins. Collins made many friends during his tenure, notably Ethel Mars of Mars Candy, who insisted on paying his son’s college tuition when she found Collins was unable to afford it. More than 90 years later, Christopher, his brother Matthew, and father Wally, are carrying on the culinary tradition of the family in big ways. In 1998, Wally founded Wally’s American Gastropub, and in 2011, Matthew and Christopher, an award-winning chef, founded Common Ground Culinary. Today, the brand operates two Wally’s, Grassroots Kitchen & Tap, Twisted Grove Parlor + Bar, The Collins Small Batch Kitchen, The Macintosh, Sweet Provisions, Neighborly Public House, St. Urban, and Arcadia Catering Company.

sourced from both the highland and lowland regions of Jalisco, which gives it a distinct and rounded profile. Villa One is offered in three expressions: Silver, Reposado, and Añejo, each of which is 80 proof or 40% alcohol by volume. VillaOneTequila.com

When Drewett Works was presented with a project in a highly sought-after neighborhood in Paradise Valley that featured overgrown landscaping and a poorly situated home, the architecture firm embraced the challenge. “This was a very complex site and we had to wrestle with it a bit, but it yielded something really special and the architecture just revealed itself,” notes architect C.P. Drewett, AIA, NCARB. The original structure was knocked down, and Drewett designed a spectacular residence that would incorporate views of the four prominent mountain ranges that could be seen from the lot, manage two nearby washes, and help abate the harsh summer sun. Today, the new 5,458-square-foot custom contemporary masterpiece is dubbed “Razor’s Edge” in homage to the razor-like folding forms in its design. Those elements are as stunning as they are functional—they not only frame view corridors but also protect the homeowners and outdoor living spaces from the intense desert sun. Appearing to soar above the desert floor, defying gravity, those forms also contrast the stone massing elements that firmly ground the architecture to the unique site.

And those washes? The south wing of the house hovers above the earth, which allows the rain to easily flow through, without impacting the home itself. Clean lines and windows abound in the design, and a conservative, neutral-hued materials palette adds to its contemporary aesthetic. “The whole form of the house is based on what I like to call a never-ending ribbon that wraps and folds and forms spaces and creates the architecture,” Drewett explains. “You can see it in the angular fascia and soffits that define the house.” Razor’s Edge features four bedrooms, as well as an upper game loft that offers nearly 360-degree views through its windows and adjacent patios. And—of course—the home was designed to offer incredible view corridors from every room. DrewettWorks.com

THE HOTTEST KITCHEN & B AT H T R E N D S F O R 2 0 2 2 Jackie Wright, Owner and Lead Designer of the Valley's Macy Lane Designs, Shares Her Insights
It’s no secret that kitchens and bathrooms are some of the most widely used spaces within a home—and with that comes a lot of wear and tear. So, if you are considering updating either of these spaces this year, here are several trends to consider. Making More Space: One of the biggest design trends is creating more space in both the kitchen and bathrooms. Expanding kitchen pantries, islands, storage areas, and workspace areas can help add value to your home and increase the overall functionality of each room. Embracing Color: While the “official” verdict is still out on the current popularity of the all-white kitchen, color is making a major comeback in 2022. Updated design plans are incorporating various green, blue, and black hues in everything from cabinetry to backsplash tiles. In addition, jewel paint tones of peacock and citrine could be perfect as an accent wall or unique shelving color. Matte Gold & Black: The shiny gold of the 1990s is still out, but more refined hues of champagne or brushed gold—especially when it comes to plumbing fixtures and hardware—are on-trend. Ditto for matte black, which can be seen in bathroom fixtures, flooring tile, bathtubs, art, and home décor accessories.
44
D E C OR T R E N D S | HOM E + DE S I GN
Cabinet Minimalism: With people spending so much more time at home now, functionality and accessibility are topof-mind for kitchen areas. Homeowners are requesting fewer upper cabinets and deeper base cabinets, allowing for refrigerated drawers, dishwashing drawers, and in-island microwaves. Sinks with workstations are another must-have for today’s updated spaces. Modern Wood Finishes: White oak and grained walnut with a variety of detail are gaining popularity in both kitchen and bath areas. While painted wood reigns supreme, warm wood tones with attractive millwork or fluting can help balance the coldness from tile surfaces in kitchens and bathrooms. Wallpaper: Yes, it’s true… wallpaper is making a major comeback for just about every room in the house. For bathrooms, don’t be scared to go bold and apply the paper to every wall if you’re working with a small space like a powder room. For kitchens, consider a fun print for a breakfast nook or feature wall behind some open shelving. MacyLaneDesigns.com
