A VOICE FOR GOOD

ROSEVELT SINGS NOT JUST FOR FUN, BUT TO IMPACT THE WORLD ROSEVELT IS JUST 14 YEARS OLD, BUT HER RESUME IS ALREADY IMPRESSIVE. The Valley native’s career began when she met—and then sang with—Dick Van Dyke. “I discovered my voice at age 9 when I had the opportunity to sing with Dick Van Dyke,” Rosevelt shares. “I’ve been singing ever since that day.” That impromptu performance, which occurred when her dad, Jef, went to interview Van Dyke at his home and brought Rosevelt —who had grown up watching The Dick Van Dyke Show and Mary Poppins—with him. Jef asked Van Dyke if he could sing a quick song with her for fun. The rest, as they say, is history. 28

Scottsdale Lifestyle | August 2021

“Once people heard that I sang with Dick Van Dyke, that opened a lot of doors to sing with others, and opportunities to perform,” Rosevelt says. Since then, Rosevelt has sung with Mickie James, John O’Hurley, William Joseph, Evie Clair, Colton Avery, and Sean Gasaway. The young singer—who Chicken Soup for the Soul author Mark Victor Hansen said, “…is destined to become a gigantic superstar! At slightly over a decade, she is a mesmerizing platform professional that captures, inspires, and has every audience member fall in love with her, her music, songs, and talent”—sings a variety of genres, though her recent songs lean toward country pop.

#5toomany

As for who she would love to sing with if she had the chance, Rosevelt says it would be, “Lauren Daigle would be a dream, and so would Dolly Parton.” Beyond just enjoying singing, Rosevelt shares that she’s drawn to it because of the messages that can be shared via song, such as Daigle’s “You Say” and “Rescue,” and Andra Day’s “Rise Up.” She sings primarily for charity/nonprofit events, and uses her voice to bring attention to causes she’s passionate about, both via song and via actions. “I’ve been a Childhelp Ambassador for about three years, and I love them so much for all they do to help abused and neglected children,” Rosevelt says about the Scottsdale-based Childhelp organization. “When I found out that five kids die every day, it broke my heart, because I have five brothers and I can’t imagine losing all of them in one day. It is so sad. That why I started the #5toomany fundraiser for Childhelp.”

Scottsdale Lifestyle | August 2021

The #5toomany social media challenge and fundraiser is designed to raise awareness that five kids die every day due to abuse, which is #5toomany. People place a heart image on their hand and post a photo to social media. They tag five friends to do the same, and then they donate $5 (or more) to Childhelp. “I’m also the newest ambassador for Operation

Underground

Railroad,”

she

shares. “They help rescue sex trafficked children, and it’s unimaginable what happens to these kids. I want to help rescue these kids from the darkness and am honored to use my voice to help.” Rosevelt also holds an annual concert called The Music and The Message to raise money and awareness for both organizations. “Last year (2020) during the pandemic, we were able to raise $100,000 ($50,000 to each) for Childhelp and Operation Underground Railroad,” Rosevelt shares. The

launched her own record label. Called 5 Too Many Records, she is working on songs that will be released soon. She also set a goal for herself to raise $1 million to help abused children. “And, pretty soon, my dad and I are putting together a concert assembly for schools to teach kids how to ‘speak up and be safe,’ and how they can get help if they are in an abusive situation,” she says. When she’s not singing or helping others, Rosevelt enjoys spending time with her friends and family. “My mom and dad are a huge driving force of everything I do and are so very supportive and do so much to help,” she says. “My dad has been an actor and producer for 30 years and has a lot of connections, and he helps coach my performances. My brothers have been so supportive, and I love them for always being able to help.” Rosevelt is excited for her career and feels blessed to be able to use her voice for good. “I’ve been blessed to come from a good home with good parents, and when I heard what is happening to these children, I knew I wanted to help,” she says. STAYCATIONS PERFECT FOR AN END-OFSUMMER HURRAH

STUNNING POOLS, TOP-NOTCH SPAS, DINING DESTINATIONS... lucky for us, we live in a resort destination. As summer wraps up (at least on the calendar), there is still time this month to take advantage of summer staycation deals. Ahh... relaxation. OUTTA THIS WORLD No one in the Valley does events like the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. From holiday ice rinks, rides, and light displays in winter to elaborate themed summers, this ever-evolving destination offers a variety of fun for the entire family. This summer’s theme is “Outta This World Summer #AtThePrincess.” Through Labor Day, there’s an alien invasion that has taken over the resort. In addition to pools, a beach, water slides and dive-in movies, resort guests can join in the Area 51 glow-in-the-dark laser tag, the Lunar Leap, a moon maze, and more. On Friday and Saturday nights there’s a Galactic Glo party at the Sonoran Splash pool, and a fireworks display every Saturday. And of course, there’s an award-winning spa and award-winning restaurants. Through Labor Day, Arizona residents enjoy 35% off their stay. There’s also a “Stay Close Offer” where every second night is complimentary; and a Sip, Savor & Space Package. ScottsdalePrincess.com

who give them lots of love and attention.

One example of this is that all the food and treats she sells have to be made in the U.S.A. and be human-grade quality. She also prefers them to be organic. “I’m a really big proponent of a healthy lifestyle, and that all trickles down to the dogs,” she says. When it comes to toys and other merchandise, they have to be high quality, as well. Griffin also tries to buy from local distributors

“It has couches, a television, and little beds where we can sit with the dogs. It’s supposed to resemble a home environment.” Each week, the dogs also learn simple words and commands in a loving, positive manner. “We send a report card home every day to let owners know how their dogs did. whenever possible. Years ago, when taking her own dogs for grooming, Griffin never liked when they were taken behind closed doors. ARTICLE MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

WE TAKE GREAT JOY IN REMINDING PEOPLE TO WORK TOGETHER, BE PRESENT, AND HAVE FUN.

PUT ON YOUR THINKING CAP AND SHARPEN YOUR PUZZLE SKILLS— PUZZLE RIDES RECENTLY DEBUTED ITS NEWEST ADVENTURE, THE HOT SUMMER NIGHTS: ROCK ‘N ROLL EXPERIENCE, A TWO-HOUR, ADULTSONLY PUZZLE RIDE MEETS BAR CRAWL IN DOWNTOWN SCOTTSDALE THAT VISITS FOUR LOCAL BARS, WHERE PARTICIPANTS WORK TOGETHER TO SOLVE THEIR PUZZLE AND CAN PURCHASE LIBATIONS TO SIP ON WHILE FIGURING OUT THE CLUES. What is Puzzle Rides? It’s where an escape room meets outdoor scavenger hunt, and where participants are driven around on golf carts by a Puzzle Master while they solve the clues. The idea was launched by Katie Dufort, who had owned a shuttle service in Prescott. In the winter, she would rent out her golf carts to people in Scottsdale. In early 2020, while toying with the option of launching a business involving the golf carts in Scottsdale, Dufort had an idea. “We happened to go to an escape room for my daughter’s birthday,” she says. “And I thought, ‘I can do an escape room-style scavenger hunt in Scottsdale.’” Although Puzzle Rides was set to launch in March of 2020, the opening was delayed due to the pandemic. It first launched in Prescott in July of 2020, then in Scottsdale in October of 2020. Once launched, it grew extremely quickly. Puzzle Rides is a timed event, where participants are given 75 minutes to solve their puzzle (except for the Hot Summer Nights, which runs for two hours), and where the riders determine the route. “The participants tell us where to go,” Dufort explains. “Not point-to-point directions, but general destinations like the library.” Run in Downtown Scottsdale, participants are given maps of where clues could be, which they then use to determine where they want to go. “We do take riders to the wrong location if they insist on going there, but we really do want people to win, so we do give a lot of directional hints. We tell them in advance that we’ll do that—but only if they want!” Dufort says. Puzzle Rides offers a variety of experiences for ages 5 and up. Beyond just the unique bar crawl, there are all types of puzzle experiences. Options beyond Hot Summer Nights include the Hijacked By Science, Pirate’s Treasure Adventure, Ghost Riders, and Wild West Heist options. The rides are exclusive to the booked group, and a minimum of 4 participants is recommended. The golf carts can generally fit 5 adults, plus the Puzzle Master, and groups of six or more are typically split between multiple carts for a fun “dueling” experience. All groups are given the same puzzle and then the race is on to see who can solve it the fastest. Large groups can also be accommodated with other options. In addition to simply offering people a fun time and an activity that requires them to work together, Dufort is especially proud of the fact that the rides promote local small businesses in the area. The clues bring people to various businesses that the company partnered with, allowing them to see and experience places they may not have known existed. “We take great joy in reminding people to work together, be present, and have fun. To be able to bring joy to people in a fun experience is one of the things that drives me,” Dufort shares. “The other thing is that we really promote small businesses by visiting them, partnering with them, and bringing people to them. We’ve even been known to stop the clock when we’re in a certain store in Old Town Scottsdale because people want to shop!” PuzzleRides.com CityLifestyle.com/Scottsdale

B ET T E R T O G E TH E R SOMETIMES BLESSINGS COME OUT OF TRAGEDY. Such was the case for Scottsdale Nurse Practitioner Lisa Swansen after the sudden and tragic loss of her son in 2018. Swansen, along with Mental Health Professional Christine Driscoll, LASAC, co-founded the Scottsdale Youth and Community Coalition (SYCC). SYCC is an organization dedicated to engaging, educating, and empowering youth. It was created out of Swansen’s painful experience and desire to make the community a better place by providing people easier access to resources in times of need.
