START REPEATING IN OUR HEADS... “There’s no place like home.” What does this famous phrase really mean, and what do those magical slippers symbolize? For many, “home” it is a sense of comfort, family, familiarity, love, and a safe haven. It has been said that the slippers represent the ability to triumph over powerful forces. Wow! Is it me, or do you see some major symbolism to the times we are living in today?

Although we have been spending a great deal of time at home this past year, it still holds its meaning... it's still a place we want to be, a place where we spend a significant amount of time, and we work hard to make it our own. So much of this is true for our beautiful state of Arizona, and the communities within it! We LOVE our homes.

The grant helped Free Arts reach over 6,700 children in Arizona. “Fortunately, we were able to act quickly and shift our programming online,” says Alicia Sutton Campbell, executive director, Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona. “We know the children we serve need arts and mentoring to cope with the trauma they have experienced. By participating in Free Arts programs, children can build resilience and hope, develop self-efficacy, acquire skills, express themselves, and feel safe. This generous donation will help us provide alternative programs, as well as resume some of our traditional programs when it’s deemed safe to resume.” Since mid-March of 2020, Free Arts moved nearly all programming to online platforms. They estimate that 154 traditional activities were cancelled between March and September.

HOT SPOT

THE HAWK HAS LANDED STELLAR FOOD? Check. An extensive wine program that includes the nation’s largest wine club? Check. A taste of home for the largest population of Chicago natives outside of the Windy City? Check. This triple threat has proven to be an immediate hit for Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant, the beloved Illinois-based chain that brought its tried-and-true culinary menu and expansive wine offerings to the desert last December. Selecting Scottsdale as the city for Cooper’s Hawk was not a coincidence for the Chicago-based hospitality group. “So many people have migrated here from Chicago, and it’s a great culinary community known for its fine dining, beautiful weather, and scenic surroundings,” says Area Culinary Operations Manager Edmund Vogel, who oversees several of Cooper’s Hawk regional restaurants, including Scottsdale.

COOPER’S HAWK WINERY & RESTAURANT OFFERS A STELLAR WINE LINEUP, FROM-SCRATCH COMFORT FOOD, AND A MODERN VIBE

COOPER’S ARTICLE GEORGANN YARA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Like its others in the Cooper’s Hawk family, the Scottsdale restaurant—located near the corner of Scottsdale Road and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard— seats about 380 guests, with a patio that accommodates more than 100. Although, the company is adhering to the state’s current guidelines so those capacities will not be reached for now. The Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired architectural design that flaunts a multi-tiered exterior and an interior enhanced by furnishings and color schemes in desert region shades, however, were created to give it a distinctive Southwest touch.

The modern casual dining space exudes a warm hospitality vibe in an inviting upscale setting. The contemporary American menu highlights dishes infused with flavors from around the world that are made fresh in the from-scratch kitchen and incorporate peak-ofseason ingredients. The Napa-style tasting room embraces the legendary American wine region while providing patrons the opportunity to explore and expand their palates. Guests can browse the inventory and purchase items like high-end decanters, wine accessories, and gifts to continue the experience at home or share it with friends.

HAWK HOT SPOT (CONTINUED)

The Cooper’s Hawk Winery sources its fruit from across the globe, spanning Napa Cabs to Tempranillo from Spain. The wine is produced in its Woodridge, Illinois, facility. Wine enthusiasts will have the chance to join the 450,000-member wine club, which comes with a bevy of perks like prix-fixe menus composed to accompany wines developed monthly exclusively for members; curated trips to the Napa Valley and wine regions in France; and other events, deals, and rewards. Arizona patrons have embraced the winery’s big and bold reds, like its Cabernet-Zinfandel blend, which is aged in American oak, giving it a bolder classic palate and mouth feel that plays perfectly with steak and short rib plates.

“We’re a lifestyle brand centered on wine and memories with wine and food,” Vogel says. A menu that features a recommended wine pairing with each dish and—for those who wish to do some tastings before dinner—an easy guide to what appetizer or main course would partner well with their Cooper’s Hawk wine of choice, are part of that recipe. “Our concept is a fusion of familiar elements,” Vogel says. “But what sets us apart is how we made wine and food approachable for everyone.” CHWinery.com 22

Chill Out? ONE SOMMELIER DEMYSTIFIES THE ‘RIGHT’ TEMPERATURES FOR WINE

PEOPLE LIKE WHAT THEY LIKE. As your sommelier, it’s my job to guide you into the best experience you can have with whatever it is that you like. You love Pinot Grigio over ice? Who am I to stop you? It’s warm outside and that actually sounds pretty refreshing now that you mention it. Squeeze a little lemon in there, why not? Wine people love rules. Much of the industry survives on right vs. wrong— what’s the “right” way to order a bottle in a restaurant? What’s the “right” glass to use? The fear of “doing it wrong” often keeps people from fully exploring everything that the wine world has to offer! So when it comes to discussing proper service temperatures for wine, it’s in our best interest as wine lovers to be flexible and open-minded, just as with most things in this world. The Court of Master Sommelier (CMS), the leading authority on all things in the beverage service world, outlines very specific guidelines for wine service temperatures in their educational materials. Sweet white wines, sparkling wines, and light-bodied white wines are to be served between 42 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit, while full-bodied white wines

and light-bodied reds should be offered

The recommendation for full-boded reds is to serve them between 58 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
