Happy New Year Scotch Plains and Fanwood neighbors and friends! This New Year, we’re embracing our own simple mantra: health and wellness should feel good. Not stressful. Not restrictive. Not another item on the to-do list. Just...plain...good. Too often, we approach January with a sense of pressure to resolve— to overhaul our routines, to reinvent ourselves, to “be better.” But what if wellness didn’t mean working harder or depriving ourselves? What if it meant adding more joy, more movement, more connection, and more fun? We might actually keep THOSE resolutions! This season, we invite you to see wellness as a celebration. Try the workout class you’ve always been curious about. Get outside and take long walks with your friends (and dogs!) Plan a trip that includes adventure and activity. Laugh more, breathe deeper, sleep longer. Nurture your mind as much as your body. And don’t forget to sprinkle a little playfulness into the process — because a healthy life is one we actually enjoy living. Here’s to a new year filled with energy, balance, resilience, and moments that make you smile. May your wellness journey be empowering, meaningful, and most of all…FUN! Cheers to all of you in the year ahead! TERRY AZAD & VERONICA KAUTZ, EDITOR & PUBLISHER @SCOTCHPLAINSCITYLIFESTYLE

BIG VISION. BIG ENERGY.
big heart. Tony Bianchino, Owner of Out Run Your Fork in Westf ield, makes a big impact.
ARTICLE BY TERRY AZAD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Everything about Tony Bianchino — owner of Out Run Your Fork in Westfield, NJ — feels big. His presence. His energy. His smile. Even his muscles. But what draws people in isn’t the physical stature; it’s the gravitational pull of someone who shares his enthusiasm for life generously and without hesitation. Tony is a man with many chapters behind him and countless more taking shape. When he wonders out loud what the “grand finale” of his story will be, I meet his smile with a quiet knowing: he will never be done. Not because the vision won’t be realized, but because new dreams will constantly evolve from the old ones. Legacy-building is like that — and it becomes clear very quickly that “Big Tony” is doing exactly that.
A BIG TRANSFORMATION
Tony’s journey into fitness began almost accidentally during his college years at Seton Hall University. The gym was a place to make friends, stay out of trouble, and — as he admits with a laugh — impress the ladies. But something unexpected happened: his body transformed. Without obsessing over the strict diets common in bodybuilding, he entered his first competition and placed second. No spray tan. No boiled chicken. Just determination and iron. By 1991, he earned the title of Teen NJ. The gym didn’t just reshape his physique — it rerouted his entire life. It’s also where he met Melissa, the woman who would become his wife of 27 years. “She was different from any girl I had ever met,” he says. In classic Tony fashion, he didn’t waste time. He proposed 12 weeks later. Go big or go home, right? Together they built a life anchored by their two children, Kira (23) and Cale (20), weathering not only the joys but the inevitable storms. One of the biggest challenges came in March 2020, when they took a leap of faith and opened their dream fitness studio — just as the world shut down. Where many might have folded, Tony adapted. His commitment to health, longevity, and community kicked in immediately. He launched free video workouts for the public and donated his small-business grant to local restaurants to help them survive. While others focused on survival, Tony focused on service. CONTINUED >

When I ask why he believes Out Run Your Fork made it through a time that shuttered so many gyms, he doesn’t hesitate: “Because of the vision. I imagined people laughing. A gym where life was happening. It was never about the workout — it was about human beings being joyful.” Fitness merges with friendship in Tony’s world. And when the studio finally opened its doors in September 2020, that spirit was at its core.
A BIG GYM FOR REAL PEOPLE WITH BUSY LIVES
Tony and his family after winning Teen NJ in 1991
Today, Out Run Your Fork is a welcoming, nonjudgmental space — especially for people who feel overlooked by traditional gyms — people juggling careers and families, while also trying to prioritize health. Today, they offer 1-on-1 personal training, small-group sessions, custom nutrition programming, injury prevention, and a good time. Their programs are designed to avoid injury and respect the realities of busy lives, helping clients build strength, increase mobility, lose weight, and boost energy — all while minimizing risk. Tony’s approach to nutrition is rooted in science and personalization. No fad diets, no cookie-cutter plans — each program aligns with the client’s lifestyle, preferences, and even genetic tendencies. The studio’s culture is its heartbeat: “No judgments. No ego. Just support.” Fun, fitness, and family — that’s the mantra. Even the vibrant orange and blue throughout the studio are purposeful, chosen for their ability to lift energy and encourage positivity. (And no — they’re not Mets colors. But you wouldn’t be the first to think so!)

“I imagined a g y m where l i fe w a s happening — people laughing, connecting, b e l o n g i n g .” BIG LOVE FROM CLIENTS
Client stories at ORYF read like love letters to the power of compassion paired with expertise. PJ, a long-time client, shares, “When I met Tony, I was a recent widower. I was overweight, diabetic, and depressed. Tony helped me believe I could do it. It’s not an overstatement to say he saved my life.” Marisa Benetich, a five-year client, calls the studio her “home away from home” while proudly sharing her eighty five pound weight loss. “I love coming here. There is no pretense. I know they care about me. I never felt that from a gym before.” And then there’s his daughter, Kira. Diagnosed with autism at five and diabetes at fifteen, her life changed profoundly once accessible fitness programming became available at her parents’ gym. Now she trains with other young adults with special needs. She has friends. She has confidence. She has joy. Watching fitness become a pathway for connection and fulfillment for Kira inspired Tony to expand programming and fundraising for the special-needs community. Personal became universal.
A BIG PRESENCE
Tony is everywhere in Westfield. Social media. Events. Sponsorships. Networking groups. He doesn’t just attend — he hosts. Out Run Your Fork offers wellness expos, nutrition classes, and workshops. His reach goes far beyond the gym. He has collaborated with the Union County Office for Persons with Disabilities & Special Needs, and he serves on the Board of Directors for the Greater Westfield Area Chamber of Commerce — reinforcing his commitment not just to business, but to community leadership. In 2025, Out Run Your Fork expanded into a new, larger facility at 500 Central Avenue, a move that aligns perfectly with Tony’s mission: serving people, not selling memberships. Education, empowerment, and longevity remain at the forefront of everything they do. Once you become friends with Tony - you are forever friends. Yes, everything about Tony Bianchino feels big but nothing more so than his heart.

Fly into Fitness at A IR Aerial Fitness in New Providence. Owner and Master Instructor Maura Babson takes f itness to a higher level ARTICLE BY TERRY AZAD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHOTOS BY CRAIG SMITH

In downtown New Providence, tucked along Springfield Avenue, there’s a workout waiting over your head — literally. AIR Aerial Fitness, at 1280 Springfield Ave, isn’t your average studio. It’s a place where you climb into a silk hammock and elevate your entire fitness routine.
AIR Aerial Fitness is part of a national brand, brought to life in New Providence and South Orange by Owner and Master Trainer Maura Batson. A former client and instructor, Maura leapt at the chance to become a franchise owner and community builder. “This is the home that built me,” she says. Her warm personality and youthful glow don’t hide the obvious — Maura is a powerhouse. She doesn’t just dream big; she executes big. Sitting with her, it’s hard not to be in awe. Born and raised in Maplewood, Maura earned a degree in Special Education and began her career as a Special Ed teacher and addiction counselor. When COVID hit in 2020, she — like so many of us — went searching for a little levity. She found it at AIR. She calls herself a busy bee, but what I see is a woman brimming with ideas and the energy to bring them to life. Her vision for AIR goes beyond fitness. She’s creating a space built on confidence, creativity, and connection. The instructors are skilled, intentional, and incredibly supportive — adapting poses for all bodies, levels, and comfort zones. AIR offers classes for kids and teens, too, giving younger flyers the chance to build strength, coordination, and bravery in a safe and joyful environment. They also host private parties — birthdays, team-building, ladies’ nights out — where aerial time becomes pure play. Classes blend conditioning, Pilates, ballet, and even HIIT, all while suspended in a hammock. Sure, the benefits include improved mobility, joint health, oxygen flow, and core strength. But the most immediate benefit is happiness. Everyone leaves smiling. AIR Aerial Fitness isn’t just a gym. It’s a place where people grow — physically, mentally, and socially. Whether you’re flying solo in a hammock, learning new moves with a friend, or watching your child gain confidence, there’s something surprisingly transformative about hanging between the beams. In a busy world, this studio invites you to slow down, breathe, and float while discovering muscles (and confidence) you didn’t know you had. CONTINUED >

“This is the home that built me.”
“What we do here is so different. The aerial hammock sets us apart and allows us to offer something truly special,” Maura says. With its warm, inclusive vibe, creative approach to wellness, and deeply personalized instruction, AIR® Aerial Fitness is more than a workout — it’s a community where everyone is invited to rise. And Maura’s vision is only getting bigger. Owning two studios gives her room to think

expansively, including her newest passion project: a Teen Entrepreneurship Series designed to help local youth bring their own big ideas to life. She wants to spark innovation and pay forward the confidence she’s cultivated. Maura is a boss. With a team of over 26 women — instructors, managers, marketing pros — she’s poised to keep growing and uplifting her community. And I, for one, will be watching.

YES! I have all of the equipment in my car to properly address patient needs and concerns. Technology has advanced so much over the years that a lot of dental equipment is transportable. I easily transport the standard equipment you would find in a dental office to conduct routine exams, x-rays, professional cleanings, extractions, full and partial dentures, aligners, night guards, white fillings, and more. I love to see how surprised some patients are when they realize the expansive scope of my services.

Snow Much Fun!
Scotch Plains-Fanwood residents head to the mountains to hit the slopes and catch amazing views There’s something undeniably magical about leaving town and heading to the mountains. The air grows crisp and clean and worries fade behind you. Whether you’re strapping into skis or a snowboard, there’s a thrill in carving fresh tracks down a powder-covered slope and feeling the wind rush past your face. It is no wonder that so many local families pack up their gear or head to the airport for freshly fallen snow, stunning views and of course, Apres Ski! Mountain resorts aren’t just for adrenaline seekers. Cozy lodges, steaming mugs of cocoa, and snow-blanketed forests welcome one and all. Morning runs reward you with untouched trails and breathtaking panoramic views, while afternoons might be spent exploring quaint mountain towns or warming by the fire after a day on the slopes. Whether it be Colorado, Utah, Vermont, The Poconos or nearby Campgaw Mountain in Mahway, NJ - neighbors and friends find healthy adventure and a lot of fun in the great outdoors.

HOW IS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL MEDICINE?
Traditional medicine is phenomenal for trauma, surgery, and emergencies. If you’ve got a broken leg or a burst appendix, you want a hospital. But if you’re dealing with chronic fatigue, hormone chaos, mystery bloating, or brain fog that feels like your thoughts are on a 10-second delay? You’ll likely get a prescription—or a pat on the head with, “Your labs are normal.”
The Power of FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE Local practitioner and “Health Detective,” Kate Motz, answers our questions about functional medicine
Functional medicine does the opposite: • Runs advanced labs that search for root causes • Sees the body as an interconnected system • Personalizes care down to your cells • Focuses on prevention, not just reaction Bottom line? Traditional medicine manages disease. Functional medicine builds health. We specialize in: • Interpreting labs (gut, hormone, detox, immune, nutrient panels) • Restoring function without meds • Personalized strategies around nutrition, sleep, stress, and lifestyle We don’t replace your doctor—we fill the massive gap they were never trained to address.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON ISSUES ADDRESSED BY FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE? ARTICLE BY KATE MOTZ PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE?
Functional medicine is what you turn to when you’re tired of feeling like a walking collection of symptoms and prescriptions. It’s a root-cause, whole-body approach that asks, “Why is this happening?” instead of “What pill can we use to manage the symptoms?” Traditional medicine mutes the smoke alarm. Functional medicine finds what’s burning. Sure, you can silence the alarm—but wouldn’t you rather figure out what’s actually on fire? Functional medicine is investigative, not dismissive. Personalized, not one-size-fits-all. It decodes your body’s “random” symptoms and reveals what’s really going on. Instead of chasing symptoms, we connect the dots between your gut, hormones, detox pathways, nervous system, and lifestyle. We don’t treat the diagnosis. We treat you.

If you’ve ever said, “I’ve tried everything and nothing works,” this is where functional medicine shines. We work with people who are dealing with: • Hormone chaos (peri/menopause, PCOS, mood swings, hot flashes) • Gut issues (bloating, IBS, constipation, food sensitivities) • Weight that won’t budge no matter what • Brain fog and fatigue that make it hard to function • Skin issues like acne, eczema, or rosacea • Sleep challenges • Anxiety, irritability, and emotional roller coasters • “Normal” labs but still feel like crap In other words, the messy middle where traditional medicine says, “It’s just stress,” but your body is clearly screaming for help. We turn those symptoms into clues. We find what’s hidden. And we fix it at the source—so you can stop surviving and start thriving. This isn’t woo-woo. This is real, grounded, biological detective work—and it just might change everything.
