LIFESTYLE LETTER

A New Chapter, Rooted in Gratitude

November 2026 PUBLISHER

Jessi Neitzel | jessi.neitzel@citylifestyle.com

There is something incredibly humbling about writing the very first letter for Sarasota City Lifestyle. For the past three years, I have had the privilege of owning and publishing Lakewood City Lifestyle, delivered every month throughout the greater Lakewood Ranch community. What began as a business venture quickly became something far more meaningful, a way to tell the stories of the people, businesses, nonprofits, and families who make this area of Southwest Florida special. Over time, many of my Lakewood Ranch advertising partners began asking me the same question: “When are you going into Sarasota?” Their belief in what we had built in Lakewood Ranch gave me the push to take this next step. I am originally from Wisconsin, but I have lived in the Bradenton-Sarasota area for the last 17 years. This community is home. I am also a mother of three boys, and being their mom will always be the most important role I have. They have watched me build, rebuild, take risks, and continue moving forward even when the path was uncertain. With the launch of Sarasota City Lifestyle, our two publications will now reach more than 15,000 homes every single month across Sarasota, Bradenton & Lakewood Ranch. That number is exciting, but what matters most to me is who lives inside those homes. Families. Entrepreneurs. Community leaders. Physicians. Artists. Builders. Restaurateurs. People with stories worth telling. Our inaugural theme is Thankful, and I cannot imagine a more fitting word. I am thankful for every Lakewood Ranch partner who encouraged me to expand. I am thankful for every Sarasota business that believed in this publication before the first issue ever existed. And above all, I am thankful to God. My faith has taught me that purpose is often found in the seasons that stretch us most. There have been chapters where I could not understand what God was doing, but looking back, I can see how those moments prepared me for what came next. Sarasota City Lifestyle feels like one of those next chapters. My hope is that every month, these pages help you feel more connected to the people and businesses around you. Thank you, Sarasota, for welcoming us into your homes. I cannot wait to tell your stories. With gratitude, JESSI NEITZEL , PUBLISHER @ S A R A S O TA C I T Y L I F E S T Y L E

More Than Words How Stephanie McCulley Turned Her Son’s Breakthrough Into a Mission to Help Other Families Communicate For years, Stephanie McCulley had seen flashes of something in her son William that she could not always access. William is autistic and nonspeaking. He had some speech, but it was not consistently reliable, and traditional approaches had not given his family a dependable way to understand everything he knew, thought or wanted to say. Like so many parents raising a child with significant communication challenges, Stephanie spent years searching—trying therapies, asking questions and wondering whether there might be another way to communicate more fully with her son. Then, around William’s sixth birthday, Stephanie watched the documentary Spellers. It changed the direction of their lives. The film introduced her to spelled communication and to a different way of thinking about nonspeaking autism—one that separated a person’s ability to speak reliably from the ability to understand. Stephanie began learning about motor planning and apraxia and questioning assumptions that can be made when a person’s body cannot consistently demonstrate what they know. Then one early session made everything real. William was working with Dr. Dana Johnson at Spellers Tampa on a lesson about Benjamin Franklin and his famous kite experiment. The material was age-appropriate and thoughtful,

but it also challenged the kinds of expectations people sometimes place on a child who cannot answer questions conventionally. William spelled “Benjamin Franklin.” Then, when asked what a candlemaker was, he answered, “chandler.” Stephanie cried. “For years we had glimpses into his intelligence, but it was so random and unreliable,” she recalls. “This solidified everything for us.” That moment did more than change the way Stephanie understood her son. It planted the seed for WillPowered, a nonprofit created to help nonspeaking and minimally or unreliably speaking individuals access spelled communication—and to help families afford the practitioners, training and resources needed to begin. At the center of WillPowered is a simple belief: a lack of reliable speech should never automatically be interpreted as a lack of understanding, personality, intelligence or potential. For Stephanie, that belief is deeply personal.

She knows the frustration of loving a child whose thoughts may be far more complex than his body can reliably express. She knows what it feels like to sit in therapy waiting rooms beside other parents, recognize the exhaustion in their faces and wish there were something tangible she could do to help. “Having a child or adult with profound nonspeaking autism is so unbelievably challenging,” Stephanie says. Families can spend years seeking a reliable means of communication while also navigating therapy, education, medical care and the everyday realities of caregiving. Spelled communication, as WillPowered describes it, is a form of augmentative and alternative communication in which an individual intentionally selects letters to spell words and, over time, works toward increasingly open-ended

Stephanie's son, William playing with his favorite trains

communication. For some participants, the process also focuses on developing the motor skills needed to select letters more reliably. For WillPowered, the goal is not simply spelling a correct answer. It is creating more opportunities for a person to express preferences, questions, feelings, ideas and personality. Access, however, can be expensive. Families raising children with disabilities may already be paying for therapies, specialized education, medical care, equipment, transportation and childcare. Learning spelled communication can add practitioner sessions, intensives, travel, lodging, materials and training to that list. That is the gap WillPowered was created to help close. Most of the organization’s scholarships support an initial intensive, where both the speller and communication partner begin learning the method. WillPowered has also funded continued sessions for families who had already started but were struggling to afford the cost of continuing. In less than two years as a nonprofit, WillPowered has awarded approximately $36,000 in scholarships to help families access certified practitioners and online courses.

Stephanie McCulley with her husband, Kort, son William and daughter Charlotte—the family behind the deeply personal mission that inspired WillPowered.

For one mother, Kortnee, spelled communication changed not only the way her family connected with her child, but also the way they imagined his future. Another mother, Lacey, had already seen the potential of the approach for her seven-year-old, but the ongoing financial commitment had become difficult. WillPowered funded ten additional sessions so her child could continue building his communication skills. Those are the families that stay with Stephanie. “If I’m honest, as a parent sitting in therapy waiting rooms or seeing other families with a nonspeaker like William, I have felt helpless for years,” she says. “Being able to write a scholarship check to a family just like ours and being able to share this with families is so special.” Because sometimes a check represents far more than financial assistance. It means another session. Another opportunity. Another question a parent gets to ask. Another chance for a child to participate more fully in his or her own life. It is hope made practical. That mission reached the broader community on June 5, 2026, when WillPowered hosted its inaugural Charity Fashion Show at Lakewood Ranch Country Club.

The event was a natural fit for Stephanie, whose background in fashion and retail made a runway fundraiser feel more familiar than a traditional gala. But what happened that evening reached far beyond fashion. The event raised approximately $50,000. Just as importantly, it introduced more people to the experiences of nonspeaking individuals and their families. Guests learned about the barriers these families face and why presuming competence matters. Local businesses, donors, sponsors, families and friends showed up for a young organization and for a mission that, for many, had initially been unfamiliar. Stephanie even stepped onto the stage to lead the paddle raise herself—something she admits was intimidating. But there was a reason she did it. There is very little she would not do to help children and adults like William. Since the event, the impact has continued in unexpected ways. People who attended have reached out

William communicating by pointing at letters with Mom, Stephanie

after remembering a former college roommate with a nonspeaking child or after meeting a family on an airplane. Friends send Stephanie photos wearing WillPowered hats and merchandise in public, turning a simple logo into an opportunity to start a conversation. Awareness becomes connection. Connection becomes action. Now, WillPowered is looking toward what comes next. Scholarships will remain at the heart of the organization, but the vision is growing: speller meet-ups and social groups, parent education and support, school partnerships, expanded training and opportunities to help more practitioners enter the field. The organization is also preparing for its third Giving Tuesday campaign beginning December 1 and its second annual WillPowered Charity Fashion Show on June 4, 2027, again at Lakewood Ranch Country Club. What began with Stephanie wanting something more for her own son has become a way to create possibilities for many more families throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties and beyond. The mission is deeply personal, but its message is universal: communication is about far more than spoken words. It is about being known. It is about being included in conversations about your own life. It is about recognizing that the ability to communicate reliably does not define the depth of a person’s thoughts, personality or potential. For Stephanie, the journey began with a six-year-old boy, a lesson about Benjamin Franklin and one answer that changed everything. Today, every scholarship WillPowered funds carries that same possibility—the possibility that another family might experience a moment when assumptions fall away, expectations expand and a door once thought closed begins to open. Because every person deserves the opportunity to be heard.

THANKFUL

EVERY STORM

How Two Sisters Built DRYmedic with Compassion, Preparedness and Purpose ARTICLE BY KRISTI SELLERS PHOTOGRAPHY BY RONI PADUA PHOTOGRAPHY

As hurricane season winds down, Brooke Yobo and Lindsay Keyser of DRYmedic are grateful for what their Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch communities have been spared this year. Restoration is their work, but they say they never want hardship to be the reason their business grows. “We're incredibly grateful that, as of today, our Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch communities have not experienced a painful hurricane season this year,” they said. “Restoration is the work we do, but we never want our community to experience hardship simply for our business to grow.” That perspective has shaped DRYmedic since Brooke and Lindsay opened their doors at the start of 2024. The company responds to water, fire, mold and storm damage, helping families and businesses recover after life's most stressful moments. In the beginning, much of their focus was on building trust. Now, they are expanding their team, investing in equipment and vehicles, and growing commercial work. One meaningful sign of that growth has been word-of-mouth. “We've had the opportunity to serve multiple homes within the same neighborhoods, sometimes even on the same street,” they said. “That means so much to us because it reflects something we deeply value: when you take great care of people, they remember.” As sisters and business partners, Brooke and Lindsay bring different strengths to the company. Lindsay loves the technical side of restoration and field work, focusing on equipment, safety protocols, vehicle readiness and the details that ensure each job is done correctly. Brooke is drawn to operations, strategy and CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / SA R AS OTA

communication, building systems that help clients understand what happens next and feel supported. “We don't approach everything the same way, but that's one of the things that makes us a strong partnership,” they said. “We challenge each other, bring different perspectives, and share the same commitment to building a business grounded in integrity, excellence, and compassion.” Behind the scenes, storm preparation requires more than equipment. It requires planning, communication, trained people and a process that allows the team to respond responsibly while staying safe. Brooke and Lindsay also encourage homeowners to prepare before an emergency happens, including understanding insurance policies and knowing who they can trust. “Quality restoration is an investment in protecting their property and preventing further damage,” they said. “Water doesn't always stop where you can see it.” They have seen that truth in difficult moments, including a family they served through two hurricanes who lost nearly everything, from wedding dresses to ultrasound photos. What stayed with Brooke and Lindsay was not only the loss, but the way neighbors gathered, helped remove debris and supported the homeowners. “Even in the middle of unimaginable loss, they chose joy,” they said. That experience reminded them that restoration is about more than repairing walls and floors. It is also about helping people regain safety, stability and peace. “Our prayer has always been that God would give us the wisdom to build a restoration business that is different - not simply in what we do, but in how we do it,” they said. This season, they are thankful for their husbands, children, parents, team, clients and the women, mentors and business owners who encouraged them. “We're still growing, still learning, and still building,” they said. “But we're so thankful for the people who have been part of this journey and for the opportunity to serve this community.” To contact DRYmedic, visit drymedic.com or call 1-941-599-6027.

When thousands of people gathered on St. Armands Circle for the Exotic Car Show this September, the polished exotic vehicles lining the Circle may have been what first caught their attention. But for Sage Auto Studios owner Alex, the heart of the event was never simply about the cars. It was about using something his company loves to bring people together for a purpose far bigger than horsepower. This year marked Sage Auto Studios’ eighth year participating in the event and its second year serving as organizer. Behind the scenes, the Sage team helped coordinate vehicles, clients, sponsors and vendors while promoting the show

throughout the community. The goal was to create an event people would genuinely enjoy while keeping its charitable mission front and center. That mission was Flight to the North Pole, an organization that creates a special Christmas experience for local children and families facing difficult circumstances. For Alex, the cause carries added meaning as a father. “As a father, anything involving children and families hits close to home.” The event raised more than $20,000 for Flight to the North Pole this year, giving the organization additional support

to continue creating meaningful holiday experiences for local families. For Alex, seeing thousands of people gather around a shared love of automobiles while ultimately helping children is what gives the show its greatest value. For the Sage team, the day represented what happens when passion, business relationships and community support are directed toward something that can genuinely help others. Cars have always been central to Sage Auto Studios, but community involvement has become just as important to the company’s identity. Alex credits Sarasota and

Lakewood Ranch with supporting Sage’s growth and believes that success creates an opportunity to return that support. Over the years, Sage has contributed to causes including Vette for Vets, Wounded Warrior Project, Hand Up for Victor, Combat Veterans, Take Stock in Children, the Denis V. Cooper Foundation and Seeing Eye Dogs. The company also supports local schools and sponsors youth sports teams. Its giving spans veterans, children, families, education and other community needs. Alex says the experiences involving children are often the ones that stay with

him most. Meeting families directly and seeing the people behind a nonprofit’s mission can quickly put business concerns into perspective. That perspective also shapes how Sage chooses where to get involved. The company gravitates toward organizations where it believes it can make a truly meaningful local impact, particularly those focused on children, families and education. For Alex, philanthropy is not intended to function as a marketing campaign. It is part of what he believes it means to operate a local business responsibly. Working alongside nonprofits has also changed the way he views success. He has seen how much work happens quietly behind the scenes and how many volunteers and organizations dedicate significant time to helping others. Revenue and growth matter in business, he says, but they are not the only measures of what a company can accomplish. That makes the theme of gratitude especially fitting for Sage this November. Alex says he is most thankful for the company’s employees, clients and community. He is quick to point out that Sage’s

growth and its ability to give back have never been the work of one person alone. Employees who care about their work, clients who continue to place their trust in the business, families who support the team, and community relationships built over time have all made the company’s outreach possible. Looking ahead, Alex wants Sage’s philanthropic efforts to expand alongside the business. He hopes to create and support more events that allow the company to use its reach, relationships and resources to make a measurable difference for local families and organizations. And while he is proud of the reputation Sage has built for its work, the legacy he hopes to leave has less to do with awards than with people. “I’d be even prouder if people remembered us as a business that treated people well, supported its community, and used its success to help others.” For Alex, that would mean more than any trophy on a shelf. It would mean the company’s success had been measured not only by what Sage built, but by what it gave back.

GIVING TOGETHER A Community That Shows Up

Every year, City Lifestyle sends checks to hundreds of families in need across the country through our annual Giving Campaign and our non-profit arm, Kingdom Building Foundation. But none of it would be possible without you. We can only help the people we know about, and

that’s where our readers come in. If you know someone quietly struggling, whether it’s a single parent, a senior citizen, or a family facing something they never saw coming, we want to hear their story. Nominations are what make this whole campaign possible.

We provided a chair lift for a teenager paralyzed in a gymnastics accident so she could move freely through her own home again. We helped a child who lost an eye to cancer get the prosthetic because insurance wouldn’t cover it. We covered dental work for a man who needed his smile back just to walk into a job interview. We got heat turned back on for a family who had spent part of the winter without it. We helped a family keep up with bills while a husband and father fought pancreatic cancer, and we helped another family cover medical expenses after the unimaginable loss of a child. These are just a few examples of some of the hundreds of individuals that have been helped through nominations from readers like you. None of it happens without someone noticing first and speaking up. "We don't just send checks," says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle.

“We send a message: You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.” Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond the holiday season. "This is about community," Matthew says. "We believe we've been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing." Often, the person making the nomination gets just as much out of the experience as the recipient. There's something powerful about being part of the reason someone else's burden got lighter, especially when that need might have otherwise gone unnoticed. The campaign is completely confidential. No names are ever shared or publicized, and nominating someone is as simple as telling us their story. We are looking for those in our communities who fall between the cracks of getting help, and together as a community, we can meet those needs.

Nominations open November 1st and close December 3rd. To nominate someone in your community, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and find the form in our bio, or visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org.

This season, giving starts with you. Let's do it together. Nominate someone in need today.
