SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 2 tablespoons chia seeds • 2/3 cup raisins • Optional: chocolate chips as desired • Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc. Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.
Quinoa BREAKFAST Bars
This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste, oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious.

1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each. 2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice. 3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite. 4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy! Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.* These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning.
Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed. Ingredients • 1/4 cup milk • 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter) • 1 cup almond flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla • Chocolate chips as desired Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist.
Protein COOKIE DOUGH Bites
Frozen PEANUT BUTTER Bites
Danger ahead: this snack is amazing. It’s the easiest of the bunch and also satisfies a sweet tooth craving. This can be whipped together in just 5 minutes and makes just a small amount. Feel free to take creative liberty here with your amounts, but if you make it to this recipe, they are around 90 calories per bite.

alexander audiology Transforming Hearing Health and Wellness Dr. Melissa Alexander of Alexander Audiology brings a unique blend of passion, advocacy, and expertise to hearing health on California’s Central Coast. Inspired by a family steeped in healthcare, Dr. Alexander initially pursued law, drawn by a desire to advocate for others. However, her path shifted when she explored audiology’s potential to transform lives. Today, as a Doctor of Audiology and the owner of two thriving practices, Dr. Alexander uses her skills to ensure her patients are not only heard but also understood. Audiology, as Dr. Alexander emphasizes, plays a vital role in overall wellness, yet misconceptions about hearing health persist. Many believe hearing loss is an inevitable part of aging or that hearing aids are bulky and unattractive. Dr. Alexander counters these myths, explaining that hearing loss often stems from noise exposure or genetics and can affect individuals of any age. “I test patients in their teens with hearing loss and others in their eighties with no loss,” she notes. Regular hearing evaluations, starting at age 40, are essential to establish a baseline for monitoring changes over time. Early intervention, she adds, can slow hearing loss progression, manage tinnitus, and even reduce the risk of cognitive decline. The impact of untreated hearing loss extends beyond the ears. Research has shown a strong correlation between hearing

loss and mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, and social isolation. Furthermore, studies like those from Johns Hopkins reveal that untreated hearing loss increases the risk of dementia. Dr. Alexander’s approach is both proactive and compassionate, aiming to address these interconnected issues through education, early detection, and personalized care. Advancements in hearing aid technology have also revolutionized audiology. Modern devices are discreet, rechargeable, and equipped with artificial intelligence to enhance speech clarity in noisy environments. They integrate seamlessly with smartphones for streaming calls and media and even offer features like location tracking and language translation. “Some patients love the endless possibilities of advanced technology, while others prefer a simple, reliable solution,” Dr. Alexander says. Her role is to guide each individual to the best fit for their needs, ensuring they regain confidence and independence.
Dr Melissa Alexander, AU.D., CCC-A, ABA
Dr. Alexander’s patient-centered philosophy extends to how she designs treatment plans. By involving families in the discussion, she fosters a supportive environment and ensures that solutions are tailored to the patient’s lifestyle. For instance, an active professional may prioritize discreet devices with Bluetooth compatibility, while a retiree may value ease of use and reliability. Alexander Audiology also offers concierge services, including home visits to fit devices or set up Bluetooth-enabled systems, demonstrating a commitment to accessibility and convenience. Preventative care is another cornerstone of Dr. Alexander’s practice. From wearing ear protection at concerts and in noisy workplaces to understanding the risks of everyday noise exposure, she empowers her patients with knowledge. Her own experience with permanent hearing damage from a brief lapse in ear protection underscores the importance of vigilance. Dr. Alexander’s dedication to her field goes beyond her practice. She provides practical advice for families supporting loved ones with hearing loss, including minimizing background noise and encouraging consistent hearing aid use. Her holistic, education-driven approach ensures patients and their families feel informed and confident in their care. At Alexander Audiology, hearing health is more than treating a symptom—it’s about improving quality of life. Dr. Alexander’s work exemplifies how audiology can foster connection, reduce isolation, and restore joy. As she puts it, “Hearing health impacts every aspect of your well-being.” Through advocacy, innovation, and compassion, Alexander Audiology helps patients thrive, one conversation at a time.

Nestled in the heart of our Valley, Cottage Health has become a pillar of healthcare excellence for our growing community. Cottage Health is a not-for-profit healthcare organization that has been serving the Central Coast for over 130 years, establishing a legacy of excellence in healthcare and community well-being. With a commitment to accessibility, innovation, and collaboration, their network of services ensures residents have the best possible care right here at home. Dr. David Quincy, MD, MPH, Chief Ambulatory Medical Officer for Cottage Health, and Katie Gorndt, MSIH-BSN, Vice President and Director of Nursing, share their perspective on how Cottage is meeting the unique needs of our community. With a population spanning young families to retirees, the Valley has diverse healthcare needs. Cottage Health has answered this call by building a robust primary care network locally. “We currently have five providers offering a full spectrum of care, from pediatrics to geriatrics,” says Dr. Quincy. “We’re thrilled to give families another option for quality family medicine.” This accessibility extends to specialty care, offering a rotating schedule of visiting specialists. “Our Physicians Clinic brings experts in urology, dermatology, rheumatology, orthopedics, and more to the CONTINUED >

The hospital, urgent care, and primary care clinics each play distinct yet complementary roles. The hospital specializes in inpatient and emergency services, urgent care provides walk-in visits for minor injuries and illnesses, and the primary care clinic handles routine and preventive care. “Everyone in our system works as one team,” says Dr. Quincy. “This collaboration enables smooth transitions and clear communication, ensuring patients and their families feel supported at every step.”

An integrated electronic health record system underpins this approach, streamlining patient information between providers. “Continuity of care is a priority for us,” Dr. Quincy emphasizes. “This system allows us to ensure warm handoffs and that patients receive the right care at the right time.” In today’s fast-evolving healthcare landscape, Cottage Health is dedicated to staying ahead. “We’ve prioritized accessibility and technology,” says Gorndt. One notable investment is a state-of-the-art CT scanner, which has already facilitated over 5,000 procedures with enhanced imaging capabilities. Education and wellness initiatives are also key to their mission. From diabetes education to weight management

programs, Cottage Health is empowering patients to take charge of their health. Additionally, annual scholarships for local students pursuing healthcare careers reflect the hospital’s commitment to fostering homegrown talent. Cottage Health’s focus on high-quality emergency care has earned it notable accolades. It holds a Joint Commission Acute Stroke Ready Certification, signaling its ability to provide lifesaving stroke interventions. “This protocol can literally save lives, and it all starts here,” says Gorndt. The hospital has also achieved Silver Level 2 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) from the American College of Emergency Physicians. This distinction underscores its dedication to meeting the unique needs of older adults. “We’re proud to signal to the community that we’re focused on delivering the highest standards of care,” Gorndt adds. What sets Cottage Health apart is its deep connection to the community. “Our Foundation Board of Community Members helps us identify local needs and set future goals,” explains Gorndt. “We’re more than just an acute care provider; we partner with local organizations and nonprofits to enhance overall wellness.” For those new to the area or looking to establish care, Cottage Health makes it easy. “Call 805-686-3200 to schedule an appointment,” encourages Dr. Quincy. “Our new physicians are ready to welcome you.” One common question patients face is deciding where to seek care. Dr. Quincy breaks it down: “Primary care is ideal for routine visits and ongoing health management. If you’re experiencing something like a cough, sniffles, or need stitches, urgent care is your go-to. For afterhours emergencies or more serious concerns like a fall, a potential fracture, or post-op complications, head to the ER.” This thoughtful guidance reflects the health system’s focus on patient empowerment and education. Cottage Health is more than a healthcare provider—it is a partner in building a healthier, stronger community. With plans to expand specialty services and enhance accessibility, the future of healthcare in the SY V looks brighter than ever. “We are proud to be part of this Valley and are always looking for feedback to improve,” says Gorndt. “Our mission is to provide the care you need, close to home, with compassion and excellence.” Whether it’s a routine check-up, urgent medical need, or emergency care, residents can trust Cottage Health to deliver exceptional service tailored to their needs.

A Sanctuary for Inner Peace and Wellness. Explore Your Potential and SHiFT Into a Life of Balance and Joy.
SHiFT Into YOU The new year brings a sense of reflection on the past and optimism for the future. It’s a time when individuals find themselves committing to growth and goals. But in today’s society of next-day deliveries, instant downloads, and such strong emphasis on productivity, it can be challenging to simply slow down and connect with yourself and each other. Nestled in downtown Santa Ynez, SHiFT Studio is more than just a yoga studio—it’s a nurturing space where the body, mind, and spirit come together to heal, rejuvenate, and thrive. This vision is driven by founder Brigette Braly’s passion for holistic healing, personal growth, and community.

Brigette emphasizes, “Our goal is for people to keep returning because they’ve felt and seen the benefits in their day-to-day lives since having a practice. And to know that the collective group around you is here to do the same can bring a powerful sense of togetherness. A sense at our core we’re all longing for.” Take time for yourself in this new year—tune in, reconnect, and recharge…together. Whether you’re navigating a tough week or celebrating a breakthrough, SHiFT Studio offers a peaceful space to explore your journey. For more information, visit shiftstudiosyv.com.
We all share the common intention of finding balance in our lives. At the core of SHiFT’s philosophy is the idea of self-care and showing up for yourself. “You can’t pour from an empty cup,” says Brigette. “When you show up for yourself, you can better show up for the world around you.” The space is designed to feel like a second home—comfortable, inviting, and filled with good energy. The deeply rich viridescent walls, delicate tin-tiled ceiling, and soft sunlight create a soothing atmosphere that sets the tone for what lies inside. In addition to yoga and meditation, the studio provides holistic therapies, including: Infrared Sauna: A deeply relaxing therapy that helps detoxify the body, reduce stress, and improve circulation. Cold Plunge: A bio-hacking trend that helps to boost energy, reduce inflammation, and improve recovery. Massage Therapy: Tailored to help release tension, promote healing, and restore balance in the body. JANUARY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/SA N TAY N E Z VA L L E Y
