Holidays & Giving

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!

We’ve officially made it to the holidays! It’s hard to believe how quickly this year has flown by. For our family, 2025 has been especially memorable with the arrival of our third child in June. It still feels like we just brought her home, yet somehow she’s already six months old—time truly moves differently when your heart is this full. As we prepare for her first winter, the cooler days and cozy evenings have us feeling deeply grateful and inspired by the season of giving.
In our Holidays & Giving issue, we wanted to celebrate the magic that unfolds across the Santa Ynez Valley this time of year. From the Alisal River Grill’s festive transformation to the twinkling lights of Solvang’s Julefest, the valley feels like a storybook come to life—brimming with warmth, beauty, and the kind of togetherness that defines this community.
One of our favorite features this month is a special section dedicated entirely to local events, both big and small. December in the SYV is alive with celebrations, and we wanted to make it easy for you to experience them all—whether it’s a holiday market, a concert, or a quiet evening by the fire.
And of course, no issue would be complete without something sweet. Don’t miss Grandma Debbie’s Snowballs—a family tradition we’re thrilled to share with all of you. They’re nostalgic, irresistible, and the only regret you’ll have is not making a double batch.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for another wonderful year of community, connection, and creativity. Your support means everything. Here’s to a joyful holiday season and all the new adventures that await in 2026.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year—from our family to yours.
Cheers,

Alisal
Making the Holidays Come to Life
Last December, while Solvang shimmered as one of America’s most celebrated Christmas destinations, the Alisal River Grill decided to create a little holiday magic of its own—and the result was nothing short of enchanting. With immense effort (and a touch of holiday spirit), the team transformed the beloved restaurant into a full-blown festive wonderland.
Set beside the Alisal River Course with panoramic views of the Santa Ynez Mountains, the Grill’s rustic elegance and natural beauty became the perfect canvas for a seasonal transformation. Twinkling lights, lush garlands, and artful details came together to create a holiday spectacle that immediately captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike.
“Our vision was simple,” says Joey Cochran, Food & Beverage Manager at Alisal River Grill. “Reinvent Christmas. Create a space that feels entirely transformed— like stepping into a holiday storybook.” What began as a bold, creative experiment quickly evolved into one of the Valley’s most anticipated seasonal traditions—an elevated, joy-filled experience where the warmth of community blends seamlessly with the spirit of celebration.

This December, the magic returns—bigger, brighter, and even more spirited. In the days leading up to December, the staff deck the halls in earnest: draping garlands, stringing hundreds of lights, and hanging oversized ornaments. This year, they’ll even rig a snow machine to create a grand, frosty entrance. The holiday décor will spill through the back doors and onto the patio, turning the terrace into a glittering, snow-swept nook for dining under a starry winter sky.
Just minutes from Solvang’s famed Julefest celebrations, Alisal River Grill offers a serene counterpart—where the same festive spirit mingles with riverside tranquility, local wine, and a touch of indulgence. Guests often arrive after a day of shopping or wine tasting, cheeks flushed from the winter air, ready to sink into the glow of the season. Step through the decorated entrance, and the mood is instantly set: playful, cozy, and unmistakably merry.

River Grill
The menu leans into seasonal flavors and locally sourced ingredients, a hallmark of Alisal’s culinary philosophy. Guests can toast with a “Rum Rum Rudolph”—a spirited favorite infused with festive spice— or warm up with decadent hot cocoa served in whimsical holiday mugs, a nostalgic nod to simpler times. Each dish feels crafted with care, pairing Central Coast freshness with timeless comfort—an experience that feels both extravagant and familiar. Their special December dinner service will run five nights a week,

Sunday through Thursday. As word-of-mouth has made this a sought-after experience, reservations are strongly encouraged. Families, food lovers, and visitors seeking that quintessential Santa Ynez holiday moment won’t want to miss it.
But the true magic isn’t just in the twinkle of the lights—it’s in the sense of togetherness that fills the space. The holidays have a way of reminding us what matters most: laughter shared, stories retold, and the quiet joy of being present.
This season, Alisal River Grill invites you to slow down, cozy up, and experience a new kind of holiday tradition—one where rustic charm and the spirit of community come together. After all, the truest luxury of the season is connection.

LIGHT AS SNOW, RICH AS TRADITION... THESE TIMELESS COOKIES GRANT SWEET NUTRITION.
Grandma Debbie’s Snowball Cookies SNOWBALL
There’s something unmistakably magical about the scent of butter and vanilla filling the kitchen on a December afternoon. Grandma’s Snowball Cookies have been a DeMarcus family favorite for generations—delicate, nutty, and dusted twice in powdered sugar for that irresistible “snowy” finish. Each bite melts in your mouth, evoking memories of laughter and cozy gatherings around the table. Simple ingredients and a touch of love transform these little snowballs into the essence of the holiday season. Whether baked for gifting or shared fresh from the oven, they’re a timeless taste of Christmas comfort.
ARTICLE BY DEBBIE DEMARCUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATT DEMARCUS

• 3 sticks of butter
• 1/2 cup of evaporated milk
• 1 tsp of vanilla
• 3 1/2 cups of flour
• 3/4 cup of powdered sugar
• 1 1/2 cups of coarsely chopped walnuts (pecans ok too)
directions:
Cream butter until very light and fluffy. Beat in the milk a little at a time until it is all incorporated into the butter. Add vanilla. Resift the powdered sugar and add it a little at a time to the butter, then add the flour. Add nuts. Roll into very small, bite-sized bits of dough, approximately 1 tsp for each cookie. Place on a baking sheet and bake at 375°F until golden brown - about 15 minutes. Roll in powdered sugar, let them sit for 20-30 minutes, and then roll them in the powdered sugar again. This batch will make about three dozen snowballs.
