LIFESTYLE LETTER
Letter From The Publisher January always feels a little bit like a deep breath in our home. After the rush of the holidays, our house finally quiets down—kids settling back into routines, the last cookies disappearing from the counter, and me actually finishing a cup of coffee while it’s still hot. It’s a simple reset, but one I find myself craving every year. That gentle pause is what inspired this month’s Health & Wellness issue. When I look around our community, I see so many people and businesses who care deeply about helping others feel their best. Whether it’s a local studio encouraging a new fitness habit, a wellness practitioner offering tools to manage stress, or a restaurant serving up something nourishing on a cold January day—each plays a part in our collective well-being. And I love that our magazine gets to shine a light on them. This issue isn’t about perfection or big resolutions. It’s about easing into the new year with intention, giving ourselves grace, and finding little ways to feel more whole. As a mom, a coach, a business owner, and someone who often juggles more than I should, I know how meaningful those small shifts can be. I hope these pages inspire you to take care of yourself this month—whatever that looks like for you. Maybe it’s a slower morning, a new local class, or simply remembering to breathe a little deeper. From my family to yours, wishing you a year of health, clarity, and gentle beginnings. With gratitude,

Winter Relief for the Sandwich Generation
Modernizing Payments – NO CHECK PLEASE!
A Fresh Start for Your Medicare Plan
For the sandwich generation—balancing aging parents, kids, and careers— the winter season can feel especially overwhelming. Snow, holidays, and packed schedules make senior transitions even harder. Every Step Seniors eases that pressure by handling downsizing, packing, moving, and full apartment setups in a single day. With compassion and calm, we help families navigate winter moves safely and stress-free—so you can breathe easier during the busiest time of the year.
An executive order that phases out paper checks for federal payments, moving to electronic funds transfers (EFTs), has been signed. The order aims to reduce fraud, save money, and increase speed for payments. This order will be in effect for tax refunds for the 2025 tax year, and phased in this year for payments of taxes to the IRS. Contact Chris Stang to get the latest information about how this change may affect your situation.
A new year is a great time to review your Medicare Advantage coverage. From January 1 to March 31st, you’re allowed to make changes if your current one no longer fits your needs. With new 2026 benefits becoming available, a quick check can help you understand your options and ensure you’re getting the right support. William Perry is a local resource who can explain updates and help you make confident, informed Medicare choices.

Be The Voice with Erie County CASA
The Hidden Cost of Cash Sitting Idle
Nearly a Century of Service
Erie County CASA is inviting compassionate community members to impact in the lives of local children. As Court Appointed Special Advocates, volunteers stand beside children navigating the foster care system, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs prioritized. No legal background is required—just dedication, empathy, and a few hours each month. This is a powerful way to support vulnerable youth and strengthen families. Consider volunteering and becoming a trusted advocate for a child’s future.
Letting cash sit unused may feel safe, but it quietly erodes your financial potential. Inflation chips away at purchasing power each year, meaning today’s dollars won’t stretch as far tomorrow. And while cash has its place, whether for reserves, flexibility, or strategic decisions, excess funds left idle miss opportunities to contribute to your overall financial strength. Reviewing where your cash sits, and ensuring it’s intentionally positioned, can support long-term stability and help maximize financial performance.
The Huron Rotary Club celebrates 85 years this January, marking nearly a century of service, leadership, and community impact. Rotary clubs worldwide strengthen their communities through scholarships, youth programs, global health initiatives, and hands-on service projects that create lasting change. Huron Rotary continues that tradition locally, supporting education, civic engagement, and community needs. As they reach this milestone, the club remains committed to Rotary’s mission: service above self and building a stronger future for all.

Winter Chimney Safety Tips from Chim-Cheroo During January, colder temperatures increase the use of fireplaces, which can lead to soot buildup and hidden blockages in chimneys. Chim-Cheroo emphasizes the importance of regular inspections to prevent fire hazards, improve airflow, and maintain indoor air quality. Homeowners should also check for cracks, creosote buildup, and signs of water damage. Understanding these risks and maintaining your chimney properly can ensure safer, more efficient heating throughout the winter months. Photography by Christi Jo Guhn Photography

Health and wellness are often defined by the habits we practice each day—how we sleep, eat, move, and manage stress. Yet one essential aspect of whole-body wellbeing is often overlooked: our oral health. At Stefano Dental, this connection has been central to their philosophy from the beginning. Here, dentistry isn’t simply a clinical service; it is a comprehensive, wellness-driven experience where comfort is prioritized, prevention is valued, and state-of-the-art technology enhances every step. For patients seeking proactive care delivered through advanced tools and a relationship-based approach, Stefano Dental has become a true destination.
What makes the practice especially unique is how seamlessly they blend innovation with warmth. Advanced technology elevates accuracy, speed, and comfort, while the team’s commitment to education and patient connection ensures that care always feels personal. The result is dentistry that not only supports a beautiful smile but strengthens long-term wellness—because good health truly does start in the mouth.
PRIORITIZING PREVENTION THROUGH EARLY DETECTION
One of the most powerful examples of Stefano Dental’s preventive philosophy is their use of VELscope technology. This handheld device uses a gentle blue-spectrum light to illuminate changes in the soft tissues of the mouth that may not be visible during a traditional exam. With this enhanced visualization, the team can identify areas of concern early—sometimes before a patient experiences any symptoms. This matters because early detection is one of the most effective ways to protect long-term oral and overall health. The VELscope allows clinicians to identify irregularities that could suggest inflammation, precancerous changes, or early signs of oral cancer. For patients, the process is quick, painless, and completed during routine visits. For the team, it provides a meaningful line of defense that supports true preventive care. In a world increasingly focused on wellness and early intervention, tools like the VELscope reinforce Stefano Dental’s commitment to safeguarding their patients’ health at every stage of life.
A MORE COMFORTABLE, MODERN IMPRESSION EXPERIENCE
Dental impressions have long been one of the most dreaded parts of treatment. Traditional trays filled with heavy material often trigger discomfort or gagging, and the results are not always perfectly accurate. Stefano Dental has entirely reimagined this process with the iTero digital scanner—a tool that replaces messy impression materials with a sleek, handheld wand that captures fast, precise images of the teeth. The scanner creates a detailed 3D digital model in seconds, offering exceptional accuracy without the mess or discomfort. These digital files integrate directly with restorative and orthodontic planning systems, making treatment faster and more exact. Whether a patient is preparing for cosmetic enhancements, crowns, bridges, or Invisalign, the iTero experience feels modern, effortless, and tailored to comfort. It’s one of the many ways the practice ensures patients not only receive excellent care but enjoy it. CONTINUED >

A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE THROUGH INVISALIGN FACIAL SIMULATION
One of the most innovative services Stefano Dental offers is the Invisalign facial simulation experience. Using a patient’s digital scan, the system generates a realistic, in-face preview of the expected treatment outcome. Instead of imagining what their smile might look like after orthodontic therapy, patients see it—on their own face, with natural contours, lighting, and expressions. This technology removes uncertainty and empowers patients to make confident decisions about their smile journey. It transforms orthodontics from a clinical process into a highly personalized experience, making the end result feel both tangible and exciting.
COMFORTABLE AND PRECISE DIGITAL X-RAYS
Imaging is an essential component of comprehensive dental evaluations, and Stefano Dental has upgraded the process to be both more comfortable and more precise. Their digital X-ray system uses thin, flexible phosphor plates rather than the bulky sensors commonly found in other practices. This means less pressure in the mouth and a more pleasant experience overall. Paired with these smaller digital X-rays is a panoramic imaging machine that captures a complete view of the teeth, jaws, sinuses, and supporting structures. This wide-angle perspective allows the team to assess bone levels, wisdom teeth

positioning, airway health, and jaw joint concerns— all with clarity and minimal radiation exposure. The combination of comfort and accuracy reflects the practice’s dedication to both patient experience and diagnostic excellence.
INTRAORAL CAMERAS: TRANSPARENCY AT ITS BEST
Stefano Dental believes that patients should see what their clinicians see, and their use of intraoral cameras makes this possible. These small, high-resolution cameras take close-up images of teeth and gums, projecting them onto a screen in real time. This transforms dental care from something described verbally into something patients can fully visualize and understand. Seeing areas of wear, tiny cracks, or changes in gum tissue helps patients feel informed and involved. It builds trust, encourages proactive home care, and supports collaborative decision-making—key elements of the practice’s patient-centered approach.
A WELLNESS-FOCUSED VISIT WITH A LUXURY FEEL
What truly sets Stefano Dental apart is the way all of this technology is integrated into an environment that prioritizes comfort, education, and holistic wellbeing. Oral health is closely connected to systemic health, making precise imaging, early detection tools, and advanced scanning systems not just conveniences but essential components of a proactive wellness plan. At Stefano Dental, every tool, every conversation, and every treatment is designed to support a healthier smile and, ultimately, a healthier life. For those seeking a practice where modern dentistry meets complete wellness—and where excellence and compassion coexist in equal measure—Stefano Dental is more than a dental office. It is a partner in long-term health, confidence, and whole-body vitality.

Staying Well In Winter Understanding the Winter Blues with Local Care You Can Trust
20
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | L IF E + CU LT U RE
As winter settles in, many residents begin to notice subtle changes in mood, energy, and motivation. What we often call the winter blues is more than a seasonal inconvenience—it’s a natural response to shorter days, colder temperatures, and reduced sunlight. For some, these shifts are mild, while for others, they can feel disruptive. Understanding why this happens, and how vitamin D influences our well-being, can help each of us move through the colder months feeling more balanced and supported. During fall and winter, daylight hours decrease significantly, which affects the body’s circadian rhythm—the internal clock that regulates sleep, hormones, and daily energy. When sunlight becomes scarce, serotonin levels may also drop, influencing mood and contributing to irritability or fatigue. Combined with the tendency to stay indoors and reduce physical activity during colder weather, it becomes easier to understand why many people feel a noticeable dip in their overall well-being. Vitamin D, often called the sunshine vitamin, plays an important role in this seasonal shift. Because it is primarily produced
when sunlight interacts with the skin, levels tend to decline during the winter months, especially in northern states like Ohio where sunlight simply isn’t strong enough for adequate natural production. Low vitamin D levels have been associated with low mood, decreased energy, poor immune function, difficulty concentrating, and a greater risk of Seasonal Affective Disorder. While vitamin D deficiency is not the only cause of the winter blues, it can intensify symptoms and make the season feel particularly challenging. Many individuals notice persistent tiredness, muscle aches, carbohydrate cravings, increased sleep, or a general sense of being “off” as their vitamin D levels decrease. These symptoms are common, but the degree to which they affect daily life is important. When mood changes begin interfering with normal routines or persist for more than a few weeks, professional evaluation may be helpful. Fortunately, there are simple and effective ways to support your well-being throughout the winter. Vitamin D supplementation is often recommended during the colder months, and a quick blood test can determine if levels are low
and guide appropriate dosing. Spending even short periods outdoors, especially in the morning, can help reset your internal rhythm and boost your mood. Light therapy is another valuable option; many people experience meaningful improvement by using a 10,000-lux light box for a brief session each day. Staying physically active, whether through walking, stretching, or home-based exercise, provides a natural lift in energy and mood. Nutrition also plays a supportive role, and incorporating foods such as salmon, tuna, fortified dairy, eggs, and mushrooms can help maintain healthier vitamin D levels. Just as important, maintaining social connections—whether through family, friends, or community engagement—can counter feelings of isolation that often accompany the colder months. If these winter symptoms intensify, last longer than two weeks, or begin to affect your daily functioning, it may be time to seek medical care. A healthcare provider can assess vitamin D levels, evaluate for Seasonal Affective Disorder, and discuss treatments tailored to your needs. For residents seeking compassionate, community-focused healthcare, Lulu’s Health Care Clinic in Huron provides accessible primary care with a personal touch. Led by Family Nurse Practitioner Lauren Binks, a Huron High School graduate, the clinic offers both in-office appointments and in-home visits, bringing convenience and comfort to individuals and families alike. Located at 410 Main Street, Lulu’s emphasizes preventive care, patient education, and long-term relationships built on trust and genuine connection. Unlocking Your Best Self THE DYNAMIC DUO AT SIMPLY VITALITY
In today’s fast-paced world, achieving true health and beauty can feel overwhelming. With constant trends, conflicting information, and an ever-growing list of treatment options, many people don’t know where to begin. At Simply Vitality, the journey becomes clear, intentional, and deeply personalized. This boutique practice blends functional health, advanced aesthetics, and client education—creating an environment where confidence begins on the inside and radiates outward. What sets Simply Vitality apart is the dynamic partnership between Nurse Practitioner Megan and Advanced Esthetician Jenn. Together, they’ve created a space where modern health care meets elevated skin care, offering clients an integrative experience designed to help them unlock their best self. Simply Vitality was founded on the belief that wellness and beauty go hand in hand. When hormones are balanced, skin is healthy, and the body is supported with the right treatments, you naturally look and feel your best. Instead of masking concerns, Megan and Jenn identify underlying causes—whether rooted in the skin, body systems, or lifestyle—and design solutions that address them at the source. Clients quickly discover that Simply Vitality is more than a treatment center. It’s a place where education is prioritized, results are intentional, and every service has a purpose. Whether someone is struggling with hormonal imbalances, seeking advanced age-management solutions, or hoping to elevate their natural beauty, the Simply Vitality approach empowers clients to take charge of their well-being. Nurse Practitioner Megan brings a compassionate and deeply clinical perspective to the practice. Specializing in hormonal health for both men and women, she understands how hormones influence mood, energy, metabolism, sleep, and even skin function. Through comprehensive assessments and personalized protocols, Megan helps clients restore balance, feel more vibrant, and reconnect with their bodies.

Her expertise extends beyond functional health. As a Key Opinion Leader (KOL) for Alma, Megan is nationally recognized for her skill with advanced laser technologies. This role keeps her on the forefront of innovation, allowing her to train providers across the country and bring the most sophisticated technology to her clients. Megan’s advanced treatments include: ALMA TED (TRANSEPIDERMAL DELIVERY DEVICE) A non-invasive technology that uses sound waves to drive growth factors and nutrients directly into the scalp. TED stimulates hair follicles, improves density, and enhances scalp health—without needles or downtime. ALMA HYBRID LASER This device combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths to target pigmentation, wrinkles, scars, and texture concerns with precision. The hybrid approach allows Megan to deliver impactful results with reduced recovery time. ALMA HARMONY XL PRO CLEARLIFT Often called the “lunchtime facelift,” ClearLift uses gentle fractional light energy to remodel collagen in the deeper layers of the skin. It improves fine lines, mild laxity, and texture without redness or peeling. ALMA SOPRANO PLATINUM LASER HAIR REMOVAL A triple-wavelength system safe for all skin types, offering comfortable, efficient, long-lasting hair reduction with minimal discomfort. At her core, Megan is an educator. She explains the “why” behind every treatment and guides clients toward informed, lasting decisions that support vitality and healthier skin. Beauty insight: Hormonal balance isn’t just about health—it’s the secret to glowing skin and steady, vibrant energy. While Megan addresses internal balance, Advanced Esthetician Jenn is the artistic heart of Simply Vitality. Specializing in age management, acne care, and advanced skin

U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED
The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.
2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows. CONTINUED >

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.
4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”
Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.
6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”
Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1, DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.

7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”
Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.
A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to continuously raise the standard of care.”
