We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us.” — Wilma Rudolph, American runner and three-time gold medalist. The World has finally welcomed surfing into the Olympic Games in 2020, which will be held at Shidashita Beach in Chiba, Japan. This month we spoke with the CEO of USA Surfing, Greg Cruse of San Clemente. We welcome you to discover the passion and dedication Cruse has for Surfing and his desire to help to bring the sport of Surfing into the Olympics.

The One Town-One Team mentality embraced by head coach Jaime Ortiz helped to inspire his team to reach the pinnacle of High School Football in 2016. The Tritons, through the guidance of Coach Ortiz and his staff, have achieved greatness with the help of local families. “You can’t put into words what the environment’s like in this town,” Ortiz said. “I always say, ‘One town-one team.’ It’s not a saying, it’s not a slogan, it’s a way of life. You see these people in this community wrap their arms around these kids. It’s a great experience and just awe-inspiring.” Dan Arritt | Orange County Register. This month we've spotlighted one such family that's been supporting the Tritons for years, as have many others. We thank you all, and we congratulate all the dedicated coaches and players that helped to bring the first CIF State championship team in the school’s 52-year history.

NUGGET SURF SCHOOL

T

he kids, otherwise referred to as “nuggets” or “groms” by Nugget Surf, were getting ready for their lesson at Church. They were zipping their wetsuits and gathering all their surf gear. Josh Stiers, or Coach Josh as he’s called, saw one kid who needed help and went to his aid. “Some of them need help getting in their suits,” he says, “but it’s funny because

they’ll paddle out in like eight to nine-foot surf.” Nugget Surf is a Surf School dedicated to leading kids in the right direction, both in and out of the water. Stiers started the school about a year ago after spending a few years as a head coach with Soul Surf. When Soul Surf closed, many parents encouraged him to find a way to keep coaching. They told him how good he was with kids, and this gave him drive and passion to start the school. The Surf School offers a service to “Nuggets/Gromz that allows them to complete Their Individual Goals (Corrections/Maneuvers) set by their coach on a weekly basis” (NuggetSurf. com). The school offers sessions on a daily basis at different beaches throughout Orange County. There’s an option to be part of a “Surf Club” which allows the kids to receive lessons in a team setting, or lessons can be taken privately. There are summer sessions and camps as well as sessions tailored around school schedules. You can also find more information about the school on Instagram @Nugget_Surf. The group of kids getting ready for their lesson at Church were part of a summer Surf Club and all surfed at an intermediate level. Church is an ideal spot for them to have lessons partially because of its break. Stiers says Church is in between a beginner wave, such as those found at San-O and an advanced wave, like at Lowers or Uppers. The kids finished getting ready as Stiers gave them preparatory tips on where to paddle out and where to grab the rail. He reminded one student that “where the head goes the body follows.” While giving the kids tips and getting ready himself, Stiers spoke of his own introduction to surfing. Though he didn’t start surfing until he was 22, he was a natural. He started surfing at T-Street and had friends who came alongside him and encouraged him. He starting competing and ended up winning a few Western Surfing Association competitions. While the natural talent for surfing has helped him to be a good coach, there’s much more to the story. Part of the reason Stiers picked up surfing at 22 was that his doctors told him he shouldn’t. The bacteria in the ocean water is a threat to his health because of lifelong medical complications. Stiers was born with Cystic Fibrosis and had a double-lung-transplant at the age of 11. A self-proclaimed rebel, he says the doctors told him he shouldn’t do a lot of things, but he did them anyway. Although he has fallen sick from mixing with the ocean water on occasion, he keeps surfing because he truly loves it. Stiers says it’s not the good things that happen in life that make people stronger, but the bad things.

“If we learn to be thankful for those things and allow them to let us grow,” he says, “that’s what truly makes us stronger.” Stiers is leading the kids at Nugget Surf by example. It’s not only his love and ability to surf that inspires them; it’s his story. Having overcome so many obstacles in his own life, he is a beacon of hope for the kids. He says if the kids ever think they can’t do something, he reminds them that if he can do it, so can they. He’s teaching them about perseverance and resilience. On the sand, as he prepared to paddle out, Stiers waxed his own board with neon-orange Sticky Bumps Day-Glo. He continued reflecting on his journey and how it has affected his coaching. He says he has a God-given gift with children. With this gift, he’s helping them to believe in themselves. In and out of the water, he’s helping the kids to think positively and be positive forces in their own lives. Plus, he says, he’s kind of little like them and they love that.

DRIVER AT FAULT HAS NO INSURANCE

If the driver of the vehicle at fault doesn’t have any insurance then your UM will pay for the injuries sustained by you and your passengers. Using UM doesn’t increase your premiums because you didn’t cause the accident. However, if you only carry minimal UM then you may be left with substantial unpaid medical bills. Not to mention, you will be left without any compensation for your pain and suffering, lost wages and other economic losses. DRIVER AT FAULT - INADEQUATE INSURANCE

UIM works in a similar fashion except it applies in situations where the driver at fault has insurance, but his/her policy is too small to cover all of the medical bills and other damages. But UIM only pays out to the extent your policy exceeds the insurance held by the other driver. For example, if both you and the other driver only have a minimal policy and you have $50k in medical bills, the other driver’s policy will pay $15k and your policy will not pay anything. However, if you have $100k/300k, then his policy will pay the first $15k and yours will pay the balance plus there will be money available

for your pain and suffering, lost wages, and other damages. BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS

People don’t realize that if you or a member of your family are riding a bicycle or walking and are struck by an uninsured or under-insured driver these same rules will still apply and you can seek recovery from your own insurance policy. UM/UIM - LOW COST FOR BIG BENEFIT

UM/UIM are relatively inexpensive for the benefit they provide. To quote Jay Welther, my auto insurance agent, “Why carry a lot of insurance for the other guy and nothing for yourself ?” I can't stress enough the importance of having high UM/UIM insurance to protect those who are most important in your life. SEEK PROFESSIONAL COUNSEL PROMPTLY FOLLOWING AN ACCIDENT

If you or a member of your family has been harmed by the negligence of another driver, it is important you seek proper counsel as soon as you can after an accident. The laws, rules and procedures governing presenting a claim can be complex and insurance companies are motivated to limit your recovery. ABOUT THE AUTHOR STEFANIE COVER, COVERLAW PC

the

San Clemente High School varsity football team clenched the CIF State Title. The San Clemente community was ecstatic about the achievement and held a homecoming parade for the team. This celebratory community spirit is part of what inspired Jaime Ortiz, also known as Coach Ortiz – long-time football coach at SCHS – to create the "One Town One Team" slogan and hashtag. “I’ve been able to witness how special San Clemente is,” says Coach Ortiz. For example, many people show up at games who don’t have kids at the school. Ortiz says it’s cool to be part of a place where people really wrap their arms around the city. He recognizes this community spirit as being a key supporting factor for the football team. To make the type of team SCHS had at the 2016 CIF State Finals, he says it takes parents who want to give their kids a good experience, good coaches, unselfish players and community support.

"It's easy for people to fall in love with San Clemente,” says Elicia, “and it's easy to help people move into the community because of how much we love San Clemente.” Thanks also in part to the help of Jason, the fruit of Drew's labor is still going strong today. After Drew passed away in 2015 from cancer, Jason stepped in to help the team with technology and strategy. Linda says when she and Drew started doing real estate, it made sense for them to support the high school and its programs. Because of The Hartanov Team's success, they were able to take a lead sponsorship role for the football program. Also, aside from the financial aspect, Drew and Linda's son, Matt supported the freshman football team by volunteering as a coach alongside friend, fellow alumni and teacher, Doug Dill. All of Linda’s grandchildren have graduated from, are currently attending or will attend SCHS. Matt and Elicia’s

son, Dylan plays lacrosse and is part of Eagle Scouts, and their oldest daughter, Sara was a cheerleader before she graduated. Elicia says with all four of her children attending the school, it will be a 14-year stretch, total. Jason and Jessica’s daughters, Emma and Grace are currently cheerleaders as well. Though the Hartanovs are tightly linked to the high school at a personal level, that's not the only reason they are supporters. "It's a big financial obligation,” says Elicia, "but we have chosen to do it because we reap the rewards from the sense of community that comes from it.” The Hartanovs encourage other families and businesses to get involved with the school as well.

is in our decisions that we choose to power our life forward, or not. To make decisions with confidence and sustain the self-assurance necessary to hold true to those decisions, it is extremely beneficial to understand our values that motivate them. In 2006, I was dating a lovely man who would have done anything for me. He “looked good on paper” but down deep I knew something was out of alignment with my heart, my head and my soul. At that time in my life I didn’t realize the importance of alignment between these three key parts of me – yet, I knew that something didn’t feel right. I got the idea to do a value comparison with this man. I presented him with a list of 100 Values and asked him to pick the top 20 values that he felt were most important to him about who he was and what powered his life.
