Beautiful Spring Abundance

“T

hough we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us, or we find it not.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Every year, spring brings us something beautiful. Whether it's lovely roses that win our hearts, sunshine with its promise of warmth to come or the fresh look of green hillsides. The magic of spring is in the birds that sing; it's in the beautiful flowers that the rains of winter bring. It's in the delicious and vibrant foods from the farms that abound and in the wonderful company of family and friends at meal time that we have the pleasure to be around. Springtime is for bike riding, picnics, butterflies, and bees, looking into the eyes of someone we Love while drinking coffee in the gentle morning breeze.

Farmers Market Experience

I

f you want to get a glimpse into the San Clemente community, all you need to do is stroll along Avenida Del Mar on a Sunday morning. From Calle Seville to Ola Vista, vendors of the San Clemente Farmers Market line the northern sidewalk to sell goods from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday, rain or shine. Take your time, linger at each table and you’ll hear familiar exchanges between vendors and customers. The farmers market has been around for more than 20 years, and San Clemente locals have been customers for just as long. Perhaps the locals are privy to a secret: there is something wholesome about the products at this market. Take Old Town Baking Company, for example. Vendor Steve Crosseen, who also manages the market in Dana Point, talks about how fresh the bread, cookies and granola are that come from Old Town Baking Company in Rancho Cucamonga. He’s been representing the tables at these farmers markets for years and believes in the quality of the products he’s selling. As you stroll further east on Del Mar, you will find vibrant produce coming from Valdivia Farms in Carlsbad. From bunches of purple and orange carrots to mounds of baby heirloom tomatoes of various colors, you will want to stock up on these fun, fresh items to use in your favorite recipes. Once you reach the Berumen Farms table, you will have an opportunity to buy various vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli and caulif lower. With farms in San Luis Obispo County and Orange County, the vendor assures its customers, “We grow what we sell.” One look at the bright red strawberries for sale and you will want to taste for yourself. By the time you near the easternmost end of the market, you will come upon one of San Clemente’s most longstanding treasures: the booth representing Don’s Farm. Don Davis is a long-time farmer and vendor at the San Clemente Farmers Market. For many years, Davis has been bringing various CONTINUED > types of produce from his farm in Wildomar. He sells a range of fruits, vegetables and grains at different times, including blackberries, blueberries, oranges, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, carrots, squash and sweet corn. Davis says he grows and sells about five different types of squash including spaghetti squash. Depending on the time of year and how dry the climate is, he may not have much to sell in the way of fruits, vegetables or grains, but there is usually honey on the table. If you like honey, you need to check out this booth. Davis sells multiple types of honey including clover honey, wildflower honey, orange blossom honey, alfalfa honey and buckwheat honey. As an extra special treat, he also has bee pollen on hand. Perhaps one of the lesser-known superfoods, bee pollen is thought to be quite nourishing for the human body in small doses. Larena Lawrence, who helps run the booth, is full of knowledge about honey and bee pollen, and can also share stories about working with bees. She’s not quite as at ease with the bees as Davis is. She says Davis will calmly let the bees crawl around on his face. When asked about working with them, Davis communicated a necessary respect for the bees. “It’s fascinating working with bees,” he says. “They work hard. They’re always working.” Learning about and listening to Davis talk about his work, it’s easy to see why he would recognize and appreciate the hard work of a bee. He says he brings 200 dozen eggs 22

to the San Clemente Farmers market each Sunday. Thursdays are egg day on the farm. He spends the day preparing the eggs to be delivered to various markets over the weekend. His eggs are what he’s best known for. Some of the freshest eggs available, people have been purchasing and enjoying them from various farmers markets in Southern California for many years. Watching him interact with his local San Clemente customers was further evidence of how much his eggs, and his presence at the farmers market are appreciated. Davis and Crosseen and other vendors at the San Clemente Farmers Market can attest to all the positive aspects of shopping locally for produce. The benefits of buying locally are becoming more and more well-known in general. Along with supporting local farmers, there are other reasons to shop at the Farmers Market. The produce you purchase at the San Clemente Farmers Market is fresh and organic, which means it’s healthier to consume than some of the other produce on offer at different markets. There are more nutrients in the produce, which is evident by the bright color—for example, in the carrots and heirloom tomatoes from Valdivia Farms. By shopping at the farmers market, you are also being kind to the environment. You are helping to conserve fuel by not purchasing produce that has been shipped from farther away. Also, as previously noted, shopping at your local farmers market allows you to experience the community in a fun way. If you haven’t already made the San Clemente Farmers Market part of your Sunday routine, what are you waiting for? April 2017 | San Clemente Lifestyle

W

e are so lucky to live in the State of California where the vast majority of our nation's produce is grown. The inspiration for our Farm to Table event was no further than our local Sunday Farmer’s Market. So many colorful fruits and vegetables, Mother Nature’s rainbow. It was then I decided that we needed to incorporate as many colors as possible in our tablescape. I knew just the place that would have the perfect eclectic collection we needed, Sundrop Vintage. Sundrop has curated an inspiring collection of vintage furniture, dishes, & décor, and they had just what we needed. The thing that I like most about a farm to table event is that you can use mismatched items as if you were pulling them from the cupboard of your grandparent’s farmhouse. Not everything matches, but it all ties together. 26

San Clemente Lifestyle | April 2017

When we think of life on the farm warm apple pie comes to mind. Blackbird Pies makes the most delightful and delicious pies that fit into the palm of your hand. Just the right mix of crust and filling in each scrumptious bite No table is complete without fresh flowers. Lynne Lucente Florals is a master at taking your color and theme inspiration and translating them into centerpieces. For our Farm to Table event, she included fresh fruits and vegetables along with wild and traditional blooms that both highlighted and contrasted the vintage plates. Which further helped to develop the effortless tied together, the mismatched style we were going for. Everyone loves cheese and crackers, and we wanted a display that was as bountiful as the harvest. Noel Moton is a master charcuterie designer. Her platters go far beyond gourmet cheese and artisan crackers to include dried fruits, nuts, vegetables, chocolate, flavored honey and homemade jams. They almost look too good to eat! San Clemente is rich with history and we choose the Historic Casino as the location for our event. They have an intimate outdoor patio with a large stone fireplace and a view of the ocean. We couldn’t think of a better place to treat our guests to a bountiful meal. Capturing the setting and details that go into an event like this is so important. We love to look back at our creativity and share it with others. Photographer Kate Noelle has a unique talent to capture details and moments just as you remember them. So as you look at her photos, they invoke an emotional response, transporting you into the scene. Neon Carrot Events was thrilled to organize this event for San Clemente Lifestyle Magazine. We are firm believers that event planning shouldn’t be a stressful experience. We’re here to recruit the ideal team of vendors, provide you with expert advice, imaginative ideas and orchestrate all the logistical details. You get to enjoy all the fun aspects of planning your event while avoiding the stress and anxiety of the behind-the-scenes work. Facebook – neoncarrotevents | Instagram - @neoncarrotevent

When building a cheese plate, I begin with choosing my cheeses first. They are usually of different types and different textures for balance and variety; then I pair those with specific spreads or preserves. They can be seasonal or just your favorites! From there, I gather my supporting platter items like fresh and dried fruits, crackers, nuts and meats. The last thing to do is build your plate. Tap into your creative side and have fun. No one platter is ever the same, and your guests will undoubtedly be impressed by your efforts. After all, who doesn't love a cheese plate? CONTINUED >

Wine Pairing "Wine paired with Life." On a recent visit to my wine cellar, in the PINK section, I picked three of my favorite rose's to share with the Farm to Table Foods. Rose is such a well-versed wine, and it comes in all colors. It pairs with salt, acid and so many vegetables and fruits. Some are dry, and many of the compounds found in vegetables can make the dry wines taste sweet. With an open table of fresh-picked farm food, you need a wine that has a certain incredible acid, and it needs to be savory and salty through to its very core. These three wines created magic. Are Your Investments in Season?

Just like produce in a supermarket, sectors and asset classes in the stock market rotate in and out of season as well. You don’t go into the produce section of the grocery store and look to buy summer squash in the winter and winter squash in the summer. If you were to walk out of the supermarket in the fall, your shopping cart might be filled with a pumpkin or two, some gourds, berries, etc. However, in the spring time, the tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet corn, etc. find their way into your basket. And why does this phenomenon occur? Spring time vegetables taste much better in the spring time when they are nice and ripe. As areas within the stock market rotate in and out of season,

knowing what sectors are in season is important to your investing process. For instance, from February 2000 to April 2007 the Large Cap stocks were up just 6%, but Small Cap stocks posted a return of 168%. From March 2000 to April 2002, the Technology sector was down -78% while Real Estate was up +25%.[1] There are countless similar examples how relative strength outperformed the weaker alternative. Using our relative strength tools, the methodology intends to keep a portfolio invested in the freshest areas of the market that are in season, or more likely to outperform, and keep your investable dollars out of those rotting apples, or areas of the market that are more likely to underperform.

Fall in Love Parting Thoughts

with Your Garden

O

nce a week my husband puts on the same song, Claudio Monteverdi’s Zefiro Torna, and plays it through the stereo’s outdoor speakers. This is his announcement to the plants that he is going to make love to the garden. That’s what he calls it. He goes from plant to plant to flower whispering, “you are my favorite… and you are my favorite… and you are also my favorite.” This weekly ritual leaves our backyard blooming with plants growing in love and abundance. This focused attention embodies three key elements to a full life. The first is appreciation. Let me pause briefly by sharing that appreciation and gratitude are closely related sisters, but there is a subtle vibrational difference. Gratitude often has a feeling of overcoming some past struggle. As in “I’m grateful, these trees are finally bearing fruit.” Whereas in appreciation there is full acceptance of what is. We are in peace. We overlook any flaws that may be present to our ego’s critical eye and are appreciating things as they are. Appreciation is the recognition and the enjoyment of all that’s going with what we are observing. We thoroughly love and appreciate our backyard space. We love the green vines that wrap around our house. We love the blooming apple blossoms that burst each spring. We appreciate the juicy oranges and lemons on our full trees. It’s like we live at a resort. We walk around our own back yard and say to each other, “it’s pretty nice here huh?” So nice, that we usually aren’t anxious to go anywhere on vacation because our standards have become so high. The more love and appreciation we bestow upon our sacred garden space, the more it seems to return its favors to us in the form of beauty and abundance. 34

THREE KEY ELEMENTS TO A FULL LIFE

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY DONNA BOND

The second attribute is one of Connection. Being in our sacred backyard space instills a connectedness to our earth mother, or Pachamama, as the indigenous people of the Andes call her. To the Oneness, we feel with all things in creation and the promise and expectancy to something more, something greater. Connection to what is breathing us, this thing we call life. Tapping into and connecting to this ever-present Life Force directly nurtures our Being, fueling us with rejuvenation. The third attribute is loving nurturing. When we give our heartfelt attention to something, we want to nurture it. Like the lover who captivates our devotion, it becomes our natural desire to give all our time, energy and care to the object of our affection. The result is thriving – both for the lover and beloved. One of my favorite principals in Spiritual Psychology is that “outer experience is a reflection of inner reality.” I know that our well-tended cared for, and loved back yard is but merely a reflection of the love that we are. It is the outer demonstration of the truth of who we really are inside. What are you ready to appreciate, connect with and nurture in your life?
