28 Days of Local

FEBRUARY 2017 PUBLISHER

S

o here we are: February.

PUBLICATION DIRECTOR

We survived the holiday season, we rang in the New Year and now we get to celebrate the shortest month of the year, the month of love and the knowledge that spring is just a hop, skip and a jump away.

A lot happens in February. This month, we celebrate historically and culturally significant events such as Black History Month, President's Day, Valentine's Day and both Abraham Lincoln and George Washington's birthdays. Some people also celebrate more, ahem, insignificant "holidays," such as National Drink Wine Day, Walk the Dog Day (shouldn't this be every day?) and Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day—don't miss it; it's apparently the first Saturday of the month. While there are already so many exciting things to look forward to for the next 28 days, we're bringing you more. That's because February is also our Homegrown and Locally Made issue here at San Clemente Lifestyle, in which we get to celebrate the things that are being created right here in San Clemente. From local restaurants to locally-crafted goods, from entrepreneurs to successful business owners, this issue is about what—and who—makes San Clemente run. So pull up a chair—and maybe a bowl of ice cream—and get inspired by the local creations all around you. Venture down the street, try a new restaurant and explore everything San Clemente has to offer. We promise it will be worth it.

or as long as Sara Allen can remember, the bold aroma of fresh coffee beans brings her back to childhood when her father Dan Allen began roasting coffee—on a grill on their back deck. This proved successful for Dan, however, when their bbq began to taste like coffee, his wife wasn’t thrilled. Despite her mother’s distaste for coffee, Sara’s father was perseverant in making his caffeinated dreams come true. Today, Dan Allen’s coffee is served in San Clemente’s very own Zebra House Coffee, of which his daughter Sara Allen and her fiance now run and own. Abuzz with artists, students, and families, the cafe is nothing if not a hub for locals. It’s the only drive thru coffee in town and has won San Clemente’s best coffee and tea for the last four years. Recently, owner Sara Allen was kind enough to sit down with me and talk coffee, art and community.

SARA, WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ZEBRA

WHAT ELSE IS ON THE MENU HERE?

HOUSE COFFEE?

We have breakfast and lunch menus open all day, but muffins are huge for us. We always have a dozen different muffins available, half of them are gluten free with at least one vegan option.

In August of 2016, my fiance Curtis Peterson and I took over operations from our friends, Robin and Jay Mcllwee who opened it in 2011. It gave us the opportunity to create custom Zebra House blends and feature some of my favorite single origin coffees. Our goal is to keep this place ran locally by family. SO YOUR FAMILY ROASTS THE COFFEE?

My father is a certified organic roaster, and he’s got at any given time probably 50 or 60 different beans that he’s imported from all over the world. His brand is called Adbibo and is roasted in Richmond, Virginia. Our coffee is small batch roasted which means there are never more than 15 kilos roasted at one time so that the quality is much better. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE COFFEE DRINK?

Our cold brew coffee. It has a chocolaty and nutty profile. We brew it for 24 hours. 14

San Clemente Lifestyle | February 2017

I’M NOTICING ALL OF THE ART ON THE WALLS IN HERE, WHAT’S THE STORY?

Art and music are two important things that go with a coffee shop. We feature rotating local artists every month or so. We don’t take admission; it’s just a neat way for locals to showcase their art and it’s anywhere from professionals to young artists just starting out. YOU MENTIONED MUSIC, DOES ZEBRA HOUSE HOST ANY PERFORMANCES?

We have open mic nights every last Friday of the month. People just come in, and they play, it’s really neat. We would like to host other musicians here in the future.

DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN OTHER LOCAL EVENTS?

We try and give back when we can. We do donations to support local events and groups and participated in San Clemente Youth Skate tournament this year which was fun. We also support the athletes in the Hurley Pro by comping meals and such. WHAT SORT OF PEOPLE DO YOU SEE COMING INTO ZEBRA HOUSE?

We get a lot of everybody in here. People come in and work on projects or bring their kids; we even have little furniture for kids. We have a wall filled with drawings of zebras by the kids that come in. Dogs are also welcome; we pass out dog treats in the drive thru. It’s just really a fun place, and locals love it here. ne of my favorite snacks to make in the dehydrator are kale chips. After many times of trial and error, I

have finally perfected the recipe. The key is to use vegetables that have a lot of water in them, so they dehydrate well. You can alter the recipe by substituting the bell peppers with zucchini or other vegetables. I tend to use all organic produce and nuts for this recipe.

WHAT YOU NEED

4 cups of raw cashews soaked for 4-5 hours and drained 1 yellow onion chopped 2 red bell peppers chopped 1 large ripe tomato chopped 1 tablespoon of ground pink sea salt 2 tablespoons of granulated garlic powder 4 cloves of garlic 1 bunch of curly kale Food dehydrator

WHAT YOU DO

Put all ingredients in a food processor with the metal blade insert. Blend until the mixture is completely creamy and loose. If it is too thick like paste, add a little water to loosen. Rinse and cut kale off the stems into bite size pieces. Dip each piece in the mixture until it is completely coated and place on a dehydrator tray. I use the Excalibur model, but any brand will do. Dehydrate at 118 degrees for 24 hours. Check the chips to make sure they are crunchy, if not dehydrate for two more hours. Sprinkle with sea salt and serve.

T

he language of flowers otherwise referred to as floriography, is the ancient practice of using flower colors and arrangements to communicate meaning. Use of floriography in the United States dates back to the early nineteenth century, but cultures in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East have been using flowers to communicate longer still. The language of flowers has been used in art, poetry, literature and the Bible. Constantine Samuel Rafinesque popularized the concept of the language of flowers in the United States through his work in weekly and monthly publications in the early 1800’s. In his feature called “The School of Flora,” he highlighted different flowers with their French, English, Latin, and botanic names as well as descriptions and symbolisms of said flowers. For example, The Latin and scientific name for a rose is “rosa.” The Old French and Old English are “rose.” A rose is in the Rosaceae family and the Plantae kingdom. Most species of roses have five petals and five sepals, and each petal is divided into two lobes. There are more than 100 species of roses varying in size, shape and color. Roses are native to Asia, Europe, North America and Africa. As for symbolism, the rose is the flower of love. Later in the nineteenth century, as floriography gained popularity in the US, female American writers and poets became more engaged in the conversation. In her poem, The Language of Flowers, Catharine H. Waterman Esling wrote,

“Yes – flowers have tones – God gave to each A language of its own, and bade the simple blossom teach Where’er its seeds are sown.” In modern times, florists like Keith Jones still appreciate and utilize the language of flowers in their work. The owner of Flowers and Friends, a local flower shop on El Camino Real in North Beach, Jones has been providing quality flowers to the San Clemente community for 25 years. Whether you are looking for a simple statement with a single flower or a more in-depth message with a bouquet, Jones has the product and the knowledge to help you deliver. He understands the significance of certain colors and arrangements and could create a strong message with the right flowers. When it comes to roses, Jones says there are significant distinctions with the different colors. For example, a single red rose paired with wax flowers is the classic way to say, “I love you.” However, Jones recommends new lovers use pink or purple roses rather than red to communicate the desire for their sweetheart, as red may send too strong a message for a budding romance. To communicate an intense message of passion, an arrangement could include colors like red, pink and purple, which generally symbolize love, passion and devotion. Jones recommends what could be called a “passion bouquet”. Choosing from his own flowers, he would include red roses, hot pink spray roses, purple roses, pink gerbera daisies, stargazers and a South African protea. For balance, the passion bouquet could also include greens and whites, such as wax flowers, green hydrangeas, ornamental kale and tuberose. If a message of friendship is needed, yellow and white flowers are ideal. For healing purposes, like in wishing someone to get well soon, Jones recommends using the color orange. The warmth of orange paired with greens and whites communicates a message of joy and balance. Sympathy arrangements should include soothing colors such as whites, soft pinks and soft yellows. Although floriography has been around for thousands of years, meanings of flowers and their colors and arrangements can vary from culture to culture and throughout time. Just as there can be slight variations in the language of flowers, Jones recognizes the importance of leaving room for subjectivity. “We need to ask questions to individuals,” he says. It is important to allow for a personal, creative touch with each customer. Perhaps someone does wish to communicate love, but they know a specific flower that will send a better message than a rose to their beloved. The art of communicating through flowers should be subjective and specialized. 20

magine walking into a sunny space and looking up to see a sprawling field of flowers with blooms more numerous than you can count. Imagine an explosion of color chains held together by thin copper wire. Imagine the subtle fragrance of blooms drying in the air and the sight of upturned faces awed by the immersive environment. On June 9, 2017, Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens will debut Casa Coastal: Rebecca Louise Law, a specially-commissioned artistic experience. The artwork, which will be the first installation piece of its kind for South Orange County, is a pivotal community engagement project involving hundreds of individuals, one famous artist and a campaign to grow 8,000 blooms. Once hung by the Rebecca Louise Law studio, the installation will dry slowly in the Casa Romantica Gallery over the course of its two-month exhibition. A variety of supporting programs and events throughout the summer will educate the community about the benefits of native and drought-tolerant horticulture. VISION

When Casa Romantica envisioned the next phase of its gallery program early in 2016, they had goals to fulfill. The cultural center, known for years as a historic landmark, has evolved into an epicenter for the arts in South Orange County. Along with exposing residents to remarkable art, they also wanted to empower them to take part in another aspect of the center’s mission: changing the public’s perception about the value of native horticulture. “We in southern California are all experiencing the effects of living in a drought,” says Executive Director Berenika Schmitz. “People visit the gardens at Casa Romantica to learn about incorporating water-wise California plants and other drought-tolerant plants into their landscape. By educating them about responsible horticulture, our fellow citizens conserve precious water supplies and CONTINUED > preserve the natural beauty of our coastal habitat. CASA ROMANTICA (CON TI N U ED)

“We wondered if there was a way that we might be able to combine that education with creativity -- to produce art that would unite our community with a common goal.” The timing was perfect when Casa Romantica discovered the work of British installation artist Rebecca Louise Law. Ms. Law is renowned for her artworks created with natural materials, namely flora. Every installation uses materials that are representative of the region she is commissioned in, and her preference for site-specific blooms contribute to the uniqueness of each installation. As an advocate of natural change and preservation, she allows her work to evolve as nature takes its course. Law is used to doing works that require an entire community to put together -- she has fulfilled commissions for international brands Viacom, Tiffany, and Hermès, and her original works at major public spaces like NYC Times Square and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London) have drawn the praise of everyone from the New York Times to the Oprah Network. So when she told Casa Romantica that she needed 8,000 local blooms for her studio to create a June 2017 installation, it presented a unique opportunity for Orange County residents to get involved. “We realize that there is no way that we, limited by our 2.5-acre property, can grow 8,000 blooms in one year,” says Schmitz. “But with the help of our local community, we can.” GET INVOLVED

The Casa Coastal: Rebecca Louise Law initiative began in October 2016 when Casa Romantica launched a grassroots campaign to reach Southern Orange County families, volunteers, professional and amateur gardeners. It turns out that almost everyone in South Orange County is interested in contributing. The Saddleback College horticultural program will be heavily involved with the the project throughout their spring semester. Numerous garden groups and both Orange County Master Gardener associations have signed on to join the cause. Girl Scout troops helped to sow the very first exhibition plots, and students from the Capistrano Unified School District will help with the harvest during May field trips. An honorary committee of native horticulture experts has also formed, with ambassadors from Roger’s Gardens, Saddleback College, local nursery Shore Gardens, and garden bloggers. The committee will write articles, present demonstrations, and offer advice to participants throughout the course of the initiative. If you would like to help Casa Romantica reach its goal of 8,000 blooms, the cultural center seeks residents who will grow a plant for the exhibition at home. Novice gardeners can receive added help by attending free onsite workshops to learn about caring for native and drought-tolerant plants and buy mature seedlings from partnering nurseries. If your thumb simply won’t turn green, you can give the gift of a monetary donation. All blooms and cuttings will be delivered to the cultural center during the last two weeks of May, and 30

volunteers will help sort each bloom for the Rebecca Louise Law studio to use when they arrive from London on June 2. Casa Coastal: Rebecca Louise Law is on view from June 9 August 13, 2017, at Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens: 415 Avenida Granada, San Clemente, CA 92672.
