Welcome to the 2023 January issue of Roswell City Lifestyle. For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. We approached this issue of Roswell City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. Read about many of our local businesses and owners whose stories impact and tips can be helpful in pursuit of new goals! When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Check out our ski vacay in Wyoming on page 30. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brûlée every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! FEELING THE BEAT Stayin’ Alive Dance Crew

At a busy gym nearby, members are pumping iron, taking stress-relieving yoga classes and doing what it takes to keep their bodies healthy. Behind the glass windows in one studio are senior women, bedecked in workout gear, skimming across the floor to “You Should be Dancing." This is the Stayin' Alive Dance Crew, a group made up of spirited and spry women in their 50s, 60s and 70s. They can hip-hop, get their groove on and, yes, they are having the time of their lives. "We start off by warming up to the hits we grew up on and it brings back great memories," says Janette Hinton, one of three co-directors of the group who leads warm-up. "We try to mix our routines with current pop hits and remixes of some oldies. The music selection is a huge part of our routines."

And so is the dancing. Their numbers are heavy on intricate arm moves and the steps, also complex, are knitted together with precision. At first, for dancer Connie Korb, 67, the memorization was demanding. “Thank God for videos,” she says. “I practice at my home. While I am dancing, I am very focused. I listen to the music and watch the instructional videos that are provided. It also keeps my mind sharp to remember all the choreography." The Stayin' Alive Dance Crew, which began four years ago, rehearses twice a week and has 43 members. They are a nonprofit organization that donates their time and talent to performances all over Atlanta - giving back to the community that has given them so much over the years. Last year, they participated in all the local Halloween and holiday season events in Atlanta, including the Little Five Points Halloween

parade, Scare on the Square at Colony Square, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's New Holiday Traditions, Festival of Trees, Christmas at Piedmont, and many more. The group features cancer survivors, one living with MS, teachers, an assistant principal, a veterinarian, nurses, dance and exercise studio owners. Performances have included: senior homes, charitable events, fundraising galas, professional sporting events, dance conventions, parades, and talent competitions. There are two groups: Mega and Crew. Mega is the beginner/intermediate group and practices once a week. Crew is the intermediate/advanced group. They practice two times a week with added rehearsals if needed with up to four performances a month. Auditions are on January 8, where ladies will learn a combination and then perform it for judges.

Roswell City Lifestyle: In 2022, you are helping a children-focused charity in need through Paint it Forward. Tell us about last year's winner. Zander Roberts: Last year's winner was Canine Assistants, a service dog academy in Milton, GA, that provides service animals at no cost and for various needs. RCL: When you decided to participate in the Paint It Forward movement, you wanted to help positively impact our community! Why did you choose Roswell as your business home? Zander: Roswell was chosen as the home for Atlanta Painting Company for several reasons. 1: It’s centrally located for our employees to service the metro Atlanta area and 2: the people of Roswell have fully supported our business since we opened in 2006. RCL: As a proud supporter of and participant in the nationwide Paint It Forward program, Atlanta Painting Company, in partnership with SCANA Energy and 680 The Fan, is giving away a $10,000 paint project. The winning charity will receive $10,000 towards their interior and

exterior painting project. This includes everything – labor, paint, and supplies! We love this. How many of your employees get involved in the project and how many employees do you have overall? Zander: All of our employees are at the Paint It Forward event, and we will have upwards of 30 people throughout the event, plus our crews who donate their time to help us paint to ensure that the charity is receiving a quality painting project, just like our customers. RCL: APC participates in so many initiatives to support the Roswell community. Tell us about some of the other organizations you are involved with. Zander: There are several philanthropic efforts that we support, besides Paint It Forward. Every November we do a food drive. We’ve done a turkey drive with Atlanta Community Food Bank and the North Fulton Community Food Bank the past 5 years. This year we are doing Operation Lunchbox. For every project we complete, we will donate roughly 5 -10 meals. Typically with these events we do anywhere between 2500-3500 meals. Every December we do a toy drive that benefits Toys for Tots and we do several school/sports charity events throughout the year as well. We are able to have a significant charitable impact each year and we are proud to be able to play a part in supporting Roswell’s dynamic community. WHAT’S NEW! MyEllevate: Next Generation Necklift

Since the early 90s when Dr. Miles Graivier invented his Deep Suture Suspension Necklift to give the longest-lasting, most natural contour and tightness, there has not been any other procedure to compare with these results. Now there is a new tool to make the placement of these sutures less invasive and with less recovery time: MyEllevate. Dr. Graivier and Dr. Hill at the Graivier Center are two of the earliest adopters of this technology. The MyEllevate Necklift gives long-lasting contour and lifting to the neck and jawline: a significant improvement to liposuction alone. In some cases, additional skin is present which needs to be removed. When this is necessary, this is done from behind the ears and possibly in front of the ears if there is a significant amount of skin excess: MyEllevate Plus. These incisions heal exceedingly well. You may have difficulty finding them. MyEllevate allows the doctors to place the suspension sutures through small punctures in the neck which are already being used for laser or radiofrequency-assisted liposuction of the neck and jowls. Jackson Hole Junket Staying slope-side on a ski vacation has many advantages, namely the never-ending views of the beckoning white peaks and the conveniences of an on-site base camp. When that base camp offers a concierge to help with equipment, rental, tuning, and storage, plus a killer spa, gourmet dining options, and a celebrated five-star rating, well that’s my kind of vacation. As a skier who avoids the black runs, there was plenty of terrain to explore right outside my suite. The Four Seasons Resort Jackson Hole is nestled in a mountain valley surrounded by some of America’s most rugged peaks, celebrated ski runs and an inspiring array of wildlife in nearby Grand Teton National Park. One morning, I rented Nordic skis and drove to the end of the Inner Loop Road from Moose in the Grand Tetons National Park. The sky was brooding. But as my cousin cut the first tracks, I admired Sleeping Indian Mountain to the east, the shrouded Tetons to the west, an endless blanket of white behind me, and curls of my own breath ahead. When we looped back, I kept looking over my shoulder, waiting patiently for the clouds to lift and reveal all 13,775 feet of Grand Teton. We were finally rewarded as we tucked into an

order of Moose Bread and a hot toddy at Dornan's, après-ski. The grandeur was not lost on anyone who sidled up to the bar and it was palpable. Back at The Four Seasons, my aching everything sunk into a soothing milk bath in a private Spa Suite as a part of the Snow Melt Ritual that continued with a Swedish full-body massage, mask of shea butter with extracts of goat milk and sweet vanilla, an immersive full-body wrap, and foot massage with chai spice and vanilla warming balm. Continuing the therapeutic indulgence, I tiptoed across the heated flagstone pool deck, popped my robe and towel in a heated closet and slithered into one of the three enormous hot tubs with my new best friends. We watched the colorful parade of skiers zip down the mountain and counted our blessings. A stay at The Four Seasons is meant to be as seamless as it is luxurious. The Four Seasons app is like having a concierge to text for your every want and need. On the day I reluctantly checked out, I wanted to grab lunch but hated to leave the Ascent Lounge where I’d posted up to watch the slope action - 13 lifts and 4,139 vertical feet. I used the app to respectfully request a fire in the two-sided fireplace then ordered

lunch for delivery, fireside. Jackson Hole’s downtown is nearby, for fat bike or skate rentals, a hefty Bucking Horse & Rider Wyoming sweatshirt from one of the many boutiques or any cowboy-themed gift. Add in a stop at the National Elk Refuge, National Museum of Wildlife Art and connect with Four Seasons’ own resort astronomer Ryan Hennessy for an evening of stargazing. Amanda Steckman has a big family here in Roswell. Oh, they aren't related, but they bring the joy and support that family promises. She is the owner of Steckman Pilates and Wellness. "I don’t have family in Georgia, but my clients have become my family here," she says. "And, there’s an amazing group of instructors at the studio. We’re a small but tight family." We sat down with Amanda to ask more about her life, lifestyle and pilates family. Roswell City Lifestyle: Pilates increases core strength, stability and joint mobility. It’s low stress on the body making it great for recovery, relief of aches and pains, and being active without the risk of overtraining. Tell us about your clients what are their fitness goals? Amanda Steckman: We have clients of all ages. There are daughters that will come with their mothers. Pilates is a fun activity for them to do together and helps at a younger age (teens) to create the habit of being active and exercising. It helps them to create body awareness or how to move with correct biomechanics, good posture, strength, and good flexibility. Men tend to need more stretching and the equipment will help assist. They also find Pilates helps with their weightlifting, golf, tennis, skiing, and other sports. There’s a good group of retired people, so getting a little older but still very active. Pilates isn’t as stressful and hard on the body and it’s easier on the joints, it builds strength, helps relieve aches and pains, and achieves a good stretch. There are other clients who come to us after physical therapy to continue to build strength and especially to relieve back pain. Some will come after having a baby to build up their core strength and tighten their waistline. Several clients say that Pilates has made their legs look sexy and put them overall in the best shape of their lives! RCL: Over the years you have helped clients of all ages and goals by creating customized programs, challenging, motivating, and guiding clients along the way. You are a NASM Certified Personal Trainer. What are your personal fitness and wellness goals for this year? AS: Like most people, I’m quite busy and starting a new business in the last year, my schedule has gotten even busier. So, for this year I want to find a better balance of working so my business succeeds and give myself time and space. I would like do Pilates 2-3 times per week and lift weights about twice a week. I also enjoy taking my dog King Arthur on long walks. I'll be

OTP Endurance Sports was founded in 2017 by a group of friends—Elizabeth Greer, Jason Stine, Dru Satori, and Lee Karp—who worked together but also liked to swim, bike and run together. Four friends became ten and ten became 20 and was continuing to grow as they met each week. They met with the owners of Gate City Brewing and were instantly excited to partner. Since 2018, they have been running and riding in Roswell from Gate City Brewing. OTP Endurance Sports is an all-inclusive running club that meets on Thursday nights at 6:15 p.m. with a run at 6:30, rain or shine. The run is between 3-4 miles with opportunities to make it shorter or longer based on what you would like to run.

There are avid marathoners, joggers and walkers. All paces are welcome. After the run, the group heads to Gate City for a beer, and to network, and socialize. The cycling group meets on Monday nights for a ride and a beer from Gate City. At least twice a month there's a potluck after the run with events throughout the year like the recent chili cookoff, a Turkey Drop run where members bring turkeys to donate, a white elephant party in December, as well as a Christmas Eve run, and cookie exchange! "I wasn't really a runner until I got older. By around 40, I ran a mile or two on the treadmill in the a.m. before work," says Michelle Rodabaugh of Roswell. "I did random races with friends and would sometimes run with a teacher friend after work. I didn't consider myself a runner.” "I was thinking that everyone else would be better than me. There were people who ran triathlons and had done ironman races, but every single one of them made me feel like my few miles on the treadmill in the morning was an accomplishment. Warming Up to Winter Salads MAKING SEASONAL SALADS SING!

I think it's safe to say that most of us are not pining away for salads during the winter months. To be brutally honest, cold weather and grey skies don’t make me crave lettuce. For most of us, winter meals bring thoughts of comfort foods like shepherd’s pie, coq aux vin, and French onion soup. Never has, “it’s so cold outside. I sure could use a delicious salad to warm me up,” been heard in any household that feels the grip of winter. Salad has not traditionally brought anyone comfort during a cold winter’s night. Making salads seasonal is the key to enjoying delicious greens all year round. The more exotic winter lettuces such as buttercrunch, mâche (lamb’s lettuce), and frisée are delicious, but should never replace old standards like romaine and arugula or everyone’s forever favorite salad green, spinach. Incorporate your favorite blend of winter lettuces with a choice of roasted root vegetables, pomegranate seeds, toasted pine nuts, dried fruit, late harvest oranges, beets, Brussels sprouts, and your choice of quinoa or farro, red onion or fennel. These fine ingredients combine to offer a seasoned salad for winter enjoyment. I’d even suggest a warm balsamic vinegar dressing with bacon, shallots tossed with the salad. Salads sing when there’s a chorus of different ingredients, combined with a delicious dressing that marries the flavors. In winter, the peak of perfection can mean something as simple as an oven-roasted butternut squash, or a more elevated salad addition such as chevre chaud (a classic French brûléed goat’s cheese toast point). Take a look at what’s around the produce aisle in your favorite supermarket and see what is seasonal. Cauliflower, broccoli, radish, red cabbage, and fresh parsley all make my short list of winter salad ingredients. As standalone ingredients,

they are all terrific. You can coarsely chop them and mix them together with a few chickpeas and a warm lemon vinaigrette as a simple way to jazz up a chopped salad. Serve with warm roasted chicken breast or a few slices of flank steak and you have a hearty and healthy meal. Move away from the familiar and change up your ingredients. Rather than berries, try pomegranate seeds. Instead of walnuts, try pistachios or filberts. There are many varieties of radishes in most supermarkets this time of the year and I challenge you to seek out heirloom root vegetables such as golden beets or purple carrots. Remember to think outside the salad box and invite new, fresh, and delicious ingredients onto your bed of lettuce. Here is one of my favorite winter salad recipes, a very pretty beet and orange salad.

WINTER GARDEN SALAD • 2 large handfuls of your choice of salad greens. Any greens will do. • 1 cup cooked couscous, farro, or black rice • 1 orange, sliced • 2 cooked beets (roasted or boiled), sliced • 1/4 red onion, sliced • 1/4 cup crumbled goat’s cheese • 2 tablespoons pine nuts, slightly toasted • Olive oil and white wine vinegar • Salt and cracked black pepper to taste Mix all of the ingredients and drizzle with olive oil and white wine vinegar. Add salt and cracked pepper to taste. Toss gently and serve with warm bread and butter. Remember to celebrate what you like. Whether you like roasted butternut squash, mustard greens, or croutons, go ahead and add it to your salad. Salad is what’s for dinner. It’s winter after all!

We all know smoothies are a good thing. Smoothies you make at home from whole fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals and many other beneficial nutrients. It's often hard to get the daily nutritional dose you need from fruits and veggies, so the more you pack into a smoothie, the quicker and easier it is. By making them yourself, you can also control the flavors and select your base. Here are some of our favorites, but feel free to add or subtract ingredients to make it your perfect recipe!

SpinachBerry Smoothie Not a fan of spinach? Try this to get all its benefits while hiding the taste by adding lots of berries!

Peanut ButterBanana Smoothie Peanut butter is known to be high in fat and calories, but it's even higher in benefits from protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. This recipe makes a little go a long way!

1 cup low-fat milk or almond milk 2 bananas 2 tablespoons peanut butter 1 tablespoon cocoa powder 1/3 cup quick oats or rolled oats 1/2 tablespoon honey

Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Note: Peanut butter blends easily when at room temperature or warm.

Kale Smoothie

Kale is richer in nutrients than most other vegetables you’d put in your smoothie. We added apples to mask the "veggie" flavor of the kale.

Beets are a great source of nutrients including fiber, folate and vitamin C. Beets also contain nitrates and pigments that can help lower blood pressure and boost your workout performance.

1/2 cup almond milk 1 cup mixed blueberries or berries 1 small beet, peeled and diced (about 8 ounces) 1/4 cup frozen pineapple 1/4 cup Greek yogurt 1-2 teaspoons honey Optional: Add 2 tablespoons oatmeal to make the smoothie even more filling.

DIRECTIONS

Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Note: Beets are better if warmed, so gently steam or microwave.

Carrot Juice, Apple and Celery Smoothie

Here's a refreshing daily detox and a meal of veggies at the same time.

INGREDIENTS • • • • • •

1 medium apple, chopped 1 cup celery, chopped 1 cup carrot juice 8 ounces plain yogurt 6 ice cubes Optional: Add a splash of orange juice.

DIRECTIONS

Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth.

Make It Your Own • The fun of making smoothies at home is you can change things up and use your favorite ingredients. • Milk can be almond, soy, 2%, etc. • Sweeten with honey or agave nectar, or add a splash of lemon. • Use your favorite Greek, plain or flavored yogurt. • Fruits can be fresh or frozen. Overripe bananas are perfect for smoothies! • Add rolled oats or oatmeal if you are using a smoothie as a meal to feel fuller longer. • Kids love smoothies. Add ice cream in place of yogurt.
