Tis' the Giving Season The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made this time of year feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflects that best. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We have a new and exciting tradition for Roswell. A piece of Germany is here: the Christkindl Market at Bulloch Hall. Please go visit, enjoy, and take in all the holiday season has to offer you, your family and friends. Spread the joy and love this season. We’ve also compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and also support our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer for entertainment and ways to give back. Check out some of our music options on page 20. While the holidays can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or who are alone. 2023 Life Saving Valor Award Roswell Fire Department Firefighters James Laudermilk and Andrew Riley have been selected as the recipients of the 2023 Life Saving Valor Award presented by the Georgia State Firefighters Association (GFSA) in recognition of their heroic efforts on April 27, 2023, when both firefighters courageously jumped into the Chattahoochee River to rescue a drowning woman. During the dark days of the COVID pandemic, David invited some of his old bandmates to get together and play music for people who would walk the Chattahoochee River trails below David’s home in Roswell. As fate would have it, David’s neighbor, who happened to own Lucky's Burgers & Brew, overheard the band. He liked the music so much that he asked David if they would play a concert at Lucky’s once the pandemic subsided. Several years later BTTB, is still going strong and plays regularly all over Atlanta. Better Than the Beatles is NOT a Beatles tribute band. The name is certainly tongue in cheek and all of the band members love the Beatles, but they also love playing other classic rock songs. The BTTB line-up is David Lowell on bass and vocals, Tommy Strain and Howard Shevitz on guitars and vocals, Nick D’Allen on keyboards and vocals, drummer Kenny Crysler, and David’s niece Ashley Zimmerman on vocals and percussion.
Reckless is a cover band that plays 70s/80s/90s rock and pop, dance hits, a little bit of country, and fun sing-along songs that everyone knows and loves. They play a wide range of music: Foo Fighters, Prince, Goo Goo Dolls, Tom Petty, Journey, and Backstreet Boys. The band has been together seven years and are regulars at Rock 'N' Taco and Roaring Social, Alive after 5, the Roswell Beer and Wine Fest and the Sunshine on a Ranney Day gala. As the holiday season descends upon the State of Georgia, there's a longstanding tradition that brings the many flavors of our state to the forefront of our holiday tables. "Georgia Grown" is not just a marketing catchphrase, it's a celebration of the state's rich agricultural heritage and our combined commitment to supporting local businesses. Georgia Grown aims to promote and highlight the agricultural and food products produced within the State of Georgia, emphasizing the importance of supporting local farmers and businesses, especially during the holiday season. Governor Brian Kemp and first lady Marty Kemp are big supporters of Georgia Grown. “One thing that we have prioritized since moving into the People’s House is making it not just a portrait of Georgia, but also a tool to help promote causes such as our Georgia Grown agriculture," says the first lady. “We are proud that the entire mansion kitchen is stocked with Georgia Grown products.”
Georgia Grown is taking center stage on holiday tables across the state with hundreds of products available for home entertaining. Chef Holly Chute and Chef Olivia Rader, the culinary team at Georgia Grown, and Chef James Ellington at the mansion recently created the ultimate holiday table for us, featuring the best that Georgia has to offer. The menu started with a Sweet Grass Dairy cheese board followed by mini biscuits with pimento cheese and duck prosciutto, a Bramlett Trout Farm smoked trout spread, and Georgia sourdough crackers. With a tip of the hat to the new year, our salad was made with collard greens and black-eyed peas. A delicious Riverview Farm crown roast of pork was served with carrot soufflé, green bean bundles wrapped with bacon and creamy grits with a ragú made from Ellijay mushrooms. The holidays are ON at Summer Classics, where the creatives and designers are adding glimmer and glam to the showroom this month. For Roswell City Lifestyle, store manager Rebecca Kamm and her team set two tables for a holiday dinner. Red, green, gold and shimmer adorn one tablescape, with greens (fresh is best) and traditional plaid accents. It's all silver and gold for a New Year's Eve or glam holiday tablescape, with plenty of chunky reflective stars and tall glittery trees for dimension and texture. Nestled amidst the idyllic charm of Roswell, CR Design Services stands as a testament to the transformative power of design. This boutique interior design firm, led by Pamela Livingston-Hardy, has been shaping spaces and lives for decades. But the journey to Roswell was no ordinary one; it was a heartfelt reunion, a quest to create a haven for a family and a story of evolution. Pamela spent 26 years crafting her legacy in Birmingham, Michigan, under the banner of Creative Renovations. Specializing in specialty bathroom and
kitchen remodeling, home additions, garages, and basements, her expertise was well-regarded. However, life had a new chapter in store for Pamela and her husband Roland. Following in the footsteps of her son, Michael, who had already ventured to Georgia, Pamela decided it was time to unite the family once more. The task at hand was both a logistical and creative challenge. The Livingstons-Hardy family embarked on a year-long search for the perfect house in Roswell, a canvas that Pamela could infuse with her design brilliance. The genesis of this multi-generational renovation was to craft a first-floor master suite that transcended the ordinary. With Michael opting for the second-floor master suite, the stage was set for a harmonious family living arrangement.
Step into the first-floor master suite through the elegant French doors, and you are greeted by a symphony of design. Pamela's artistic strategy is unveiled, where accent colors grace only one wall, typically the one behind the bed, drawing your gaze toward the centerpiece—the bed itself. But it's the details that elevate this space to the extraordinary. Tiles, meticulously selected, weave a black-and-white theme into the bathroom. Textured white tiles grace the shower walls, while white penny tiles adorn the ceiling. Black octagon tiles dance on the shower floor and the wall behind the vanity mirrors. Pamela, who cherishes the art of bathing, handpicked a freestanding tub that crowns this wet room. For moments of reprieve and relaxation, a private sitting room awaits, adorned with ample windows that invite natural light to caress the room. ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY WAYNE ALBRIGHT For the last ten years, Tim Wynkoop has worn a beard as Santa here in Roswell. Of course, he’s only Santa’s helper, kids. The real big guy is so busy this time of year, that he relies on Tim to spread the spirit and take notes. Santa Tim’s contribution to Roswell is immeasurable not only at Christmas but also throughout the year. He and his wife Mary are a real estate team with Coldwell Banker in Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton, and Marietta. They support the community through the Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell (where Tim currently serves as president), Roswell Inc., and they are on the board for the Head of Hooch regatta in Chattanooga. They are instrumental in planning the annual winter holiday party for the Childhood Development Associate (CDA) where Tim serves on the board. Tim says he is occasionally recognized without his glorious Santa suit, which brings him joy.
And, the only thing more wonderful than CDA kids running to see Santa is their parents asking Santa for hope. Children tug on his perfect beard to check if it’s real (it is) and parents have been known to request Santa Tim call their children to remind them not to be naughty, because he is watching. It’s not an easy job, so he enlists the support of elves. Mrs. Claus (his wife of 42 years, Mary) helps with the children. Ryan and Dan Pernice from Table and Main, and Osteria Mattone supply goodies. Santa also visits North Georgia Equine in Motion, in Cumming, where hippotherapy for special needs autistic and nonverbal children, employs horseback and equine therapy. When he’s not making spirits bright, Santa loves Canton Street and supporting local businesses like Ceviche, Table and Main, Osteria Mattone, and Mac McGee’s.

"I never knew that collecting art could be such a wonderful experience until I met Mary Bayus, gallery director at Vinings Gallery on Elizabeth Way in Historic Roswell," says Roswell resident and collector, Sandy Buhler. "My first painting was an Alexei Butirskiy, a Russian artist living in Moscow at the time. Alexei was present in the gallery when I bought my first painting and Mary introduced us. It was the first of many conversations with amazing artists facilitated by Mary. That night Mary photographed the artist and me with his painting, after which Alexi wrote a special message to me for the back of the painting." KALAMATA OLIVE AND RAISIN RICE PILAF WITH TOASTED PECANS
DIRECTIONS:
Rice with olives is a classic for Peruvian Christmas, and each family has their own version using the famous Peruvian botija olives (which you can find on Amazon) or replacing them with kalamata olives. This is my version, and it is a tradition in my house to prepare it both at Christmas and for New Year's dinner. The combination of salty olives with the sweetness of raisins and the incredible toasted flavor of crunchy pecans makes a simple rice dish worthy of any celebration.
1. Start by reserving 3.5 ounces of olives. Finely chop the remaining olives and set them aside. 2. Blend the 3.5 ounces of olives with the water. 3. In a heavy-bottomed pot set over high heat, add the olive oil. Once it's hot, add the chopped red onion and cook until it turns translucent. Next, add the minced garlic and cook until it becomes golden brown. 4. Stir in the rice, making sure it's thoroughly coated with the aromatic flavors. Add the chopped olives and raisins and give it another stir. 5. Pour in the olive water blend and season with salt. Keep the heat on high until it reaches a boil. Once it boils, reduce the heat to a minimum, cover the pot, and let it cook. 6. Allow it to cook for precisely 15 minutes, then turn off the stove. Avoid lifting the lid of the pot, as the trapped steam will continue to cook the rice to perfection. Refrigerate the rice for 24 hours before serving to transform it into resistant starch. 7. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake the pecans for 7 to 10 minutes. 8. Serve the rice with the toasted and chopped pecans on top.

When you walk into Brewable, it's not just the aroma of fresh-brewed coffee that grabs your attention, it's the friendly Brewistas behind the counter. Roswell residents love stopping by the area's newest coffee shop to visit with friends or work on their laptops while they enjoy a cup of coffee or one of Brewable's specialty lemonades. Founded in 2017, Brewable is the first grassroots nonprofit café in North Fulton dedicated to creating meaningful, paid employment opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). By practicing customer service and problem-solving skills in a café setting, employees, a.k.a. “Brewistas,” not only gain the necessary skills and confidence to achieve long-term success but also a sense of purpose and belonging in the community. The new Roswell café, opened in partnership with Roswell United Methodist Church and located at 846 Mimosa Blvd., is the third location for Brewable. The other two locations include the Alpharetta Community Center and the lobby of Alpharetta City Hall. The sing-song greetings and choral affirmations of genuine warmth fill the air at the Four Seasons Bora Bora, along with calls from busy sea birds and melodic coqui frogs. Hello is “ia ora na,” pronounced “yo’ rah nah,” with the accent on the first syllable, and, G, B,B A were you to score it. “Mau ru’ uru” is thank you, pronounced “mah-roo-roo,” with the same melody. Men and women alike pitch their voices a bit higher, tilt their heads, and lift their eyes with every charming greeting, which begins as soon as the puddle jumper lands at the tiny Motu Mute Airport in Bora Bora. Fly to L.A. then to Tahiti (eight hours), and stay the night before the 50-minute flight over the bluest water to the French Polynesian island surrounded by atolls that host some of the world’s top hotel brands. Each sends a yacht to meet guests at the airport, for a fresh 15-minute cruise across the bay to the hotel’s dock. At the Four Seasons Bora Bora, bucket list overwater bungalows are perched in the lagoon, inviting early-morning swims off your own private dock with a bright breakfast table set on your covered deck overlooking Mount Otemanu. A tomato-red tropical print tablecloth is the canvas for breakfast, delivered cheerfully in a Polynesian canoe. The morning air is like silk, with a lithe breeze promising more of the same. The slow morning rush hour in the bay is on. Small quiet ferries deliver people to work, and fishing boats head out, hopeful. The lagoon is flat, ruffled by the occasional wake. I throw open the French doors from the king-bedroom suite and dive into the water, startling the neighborhood fish and rays. Later, we meander down the shady paths of the resort to the Te Mahana Spa. The pace is playful, yet peaceful. With breathtaking lagoon and Pacific Ocean views from twin infinity pools, the treatment begins with local juices and fruit, a foot massage, and then continues with rebalancing rituals starring indigenous ingredients like skin-smoothing, Tahitian-blackpearl powder and detoxifying algae sourced from the ocean. A full body scrub, massage, and hour-long soak in a coconut bath leaves us thankful and grounded.

Days are spent lounging by the beach-side pool, dipping into the warm clear sea, paddling across the still water and snorkeling with the resident marine biologist who helps us graft coral that will repopulate the lagoon. The Eskimos have thousands of words for snow. Here, there must be the same for blue water. Falling asleep, we left the doors open to watch the dark sky brighten with stars and a new moon. The only sounds at night are the electric carts bumping across the boardwalk, delivering night caps and sleepy guests to bungalows. We didn’t have to leave the resort to experience the culture and history of the island, but we did spend an afternoon in the back of a jeep touring the small, but mighty island of Bora Bora. Christmas Crafting CRAFT BOX GIRLS
'Tis the season for crafting the perfect holiday home decorations. We moved to our home in Roswell two weeks before Christmas last year which didn't leave much time for decorating, so this year I am going all out to turn our country chic farmhouse into a winter wonderland. When it comes to decorating each year, I love to add new versatile handmade decor to my collection.

Wood beads are one of my essential decorations and they are always in my decorating arsenal for every holiday. Wood bead strands are one of my favorite crafts to make and everyone loves how they look in my seasonal decor! Whether you are a seasoned crafter or just getting started, this project is one you can easily tackle and be happy with the outcome. Designing the perfect strand is an easy way to add extra holiday spirit to your Christmas tree, tiered tray or mantel!
Materials:
Raw Wood Beads in Various Sizes Twine Unicorn SPiT Gel Stain Non-Water Based Sealant Thin Wood Skewers Paint Brush Shoe Box or Shipping Box Scissors Scrap Cardboard
Directions:
1: Sort the wood beads by size and lay out in a color pattern. 2: Separate the beads by what color you will paint them. 3: Start with one color of stain and slide beads on the skewer. 4. Use the paintbrush to stain the beads. 5. Once you are done keep the beads on the skewer and lay it across an open shoe box. 6. Repeat steps 4-6 for each color. I recommend leaving at least one size of bead raw wood. 7. Once the beads are dry, spray or paint them with a non-water-based sealant to protect them from wear and tear and the elements. 8. While the beads are drying, cut a piece of scrap cardboard that is 4 inches tall x 3 inches wide. This is the base to make the two tassels. 9. Wrap the twine around the 4-inch side 20-30 times. The more you wrap, the fuller the tassel will be. 10. Cut a 12” piece of twine. Pull this piece under the twine wrapped around the cardboard. Pull it to the top and tie a double knot. 11. Cut along the end of the tassel loop to release it from the cardboard.
12. Cut a 12” piece of twine. Wrap this around the neck of the tassle multiple times about 3/4-1” from the top knot. 13. Make a second tassel. 14. Cut a piece of twine to the desired length of your strand. Tie the end to one tassel. 15. String the dry beads in the desired color pattern. 16. Once you have strung all the beads, tie off the end by adding the second tassel. Style the wood bead strand on a Christmas tree, on a tiered tray, or on your fireplace mantel. We just completed a full exterior remodel in the Inverness subdivision. The call was for a deck rebuild. The existing deck was dangerous and in a state of disrepair. It had to be torn down completely. After dialogue and evaluation between the homeowners and me, we discovered other problems and some great solutions to not only fix the issues, but also to add value to the home. I brought some ideas to the table about a possible open-air porch build in place of the deck and a portico with a new stone front stoop to replace the sun-damaged front door. What we like to do at Painting Plus is offer solutions to problems and give ideas that add value to the property. We have been working with the Capital City Country
A few things local people don’t know is that Walton High School was also a vocational school in the 80s and 90s. It has since been replaced with a computer lab. I was very involved in building construction and drafting (we had one of the best teachers ever, Mr. Bob Overstreet). My true skill is carpentry and building. Back in 1998, Kent and I, with one helper, repaired and painted 32 houses in the subdivision I grew up in (Princeton West Meadow Chase behind Walton.) I was known as the handyman kid in the neighborhood. For years I did odd jobs for neighbors. I cleaned out

gutters and pressure-washed houses. I wanted to be self-employed, but I was still trying to find my niche. I started Painting Plus after graduation from UGA in 1999. My mom came up with the name Painting Plus. Painting projects lead to carpentry work and over the last 25 years, we have grown from a painting and repair contractor to a full-blown general contractor. My dad is my best friend and mentor and over the years he has given me great guidance. He was the regional manager for Novartis Pharmaceuticals and managed the East Coast for them for 35 years. Once he retired, he and I started and partnered in Gutters Plus Inc. Fifteen years ago we started to operate under the name Siding Plus. This idea was brought to me by the executives at James Hardie, the fiber cement siding manufacturer. We are one of the leaders in the market and a James Hardie Elite Preferred Remodeler, so we started operating under both names. Today, we use the name Plus Services (Painting / Siding / Gutters Plus ) - the Plus family of businesses. We are a licensed general contractor in both Georgia and Florida, serving the panhandle of Florida from Panama City to Pensacola.

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Roswell’s Linda Goodman Warren knows how to bring out the best in people, and that’s exactly what she’s doing at the City of Roswell. “Always do everything in the spirit of excellence.” It’s the guiding principle that Linda Goodman Warren learned from her father. And it’s a refrain she shares with her team at the City of Roswell all the time. “My father said, ‘Linda, you’ll never know who you’re going to meet each day. Treat everyone as you want to be treated. Have a sense of pride about all you do and all you touch. Do everything in the spirit of excellence.’” Linda’s father, Al Goodman, was part of a chart-topping R&B group and was as well regarded for his kindness and integrity as he was for his award-winning songwriting and rich baritone. Linda credits his passion, drive, and warmth with inspiring her desire to help people realize their own success. And today, as Roswell’s Director of Human Resources, she and her “HR Dream Team” are inspired by that same spirit of excellence. Linda’s story starts about 800 miles from Roswell, in North Jersey, where she grew up just a stone’s throw away from NYC. After visiting a friend who had moved to Atlanta in the mid-‘90s, Linda fell in love with area and decided to make it her home. The early years of her career were spent working in finance within the private sector, but when she took on a finance role with the City of Atlanta, Linda realized her heart was in the public sector. “Working in local government immediately appealed to me. The public sector offers security and stability, but more than anything, it offers a sense of purpose and fulfillment,” shares Linda. Linda loved being part of the process to allocate funding city departments needed to effectively serve the community, but she wasn’t thrilled to be sitting in front of spreadsheets all the time. “I’m a people
person, after all,” says Linda. “I’m a people person All. Day. Long.” Linda shifted her career to focus on human resource management and organizational behavior. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Organizational Development, from Mercer University and Shorter University, respectively. She also earned her accreditation as a Certified Human Resources Manager (CHRM). During the next 18 years at the City of Atlanta, Linda distinguished herself as a trusted human resources professional, overseeing a broad range of personnel development and human resources functions. In 2018, she became Director of Human Resources for Union City, Georgia. After four years at Union City, Linda joined the City of Roswell as Human Resources Director in September 2022. “The City of Roswell has the most wonderful employees. I love that the work we do in Human Resources can directly impact our employees’ ability to feel good about where they are, what they do, and who they are with,” says Linda. “That’s what drives me every day—the idea that I can make a difference, even in small ways.” Linda and her team are making a difference in the City of Roswell’s workforce in big ways, too. Not only have they implemented improved benefits, enhanced wellness programs, and added more education and development opportunities for staff, but they have also created a variety of programs to celebrate staff success, including Roswell’s Employee of the Month program and the City’s first-ever Employee Appreciation Week celebration. In 2023, the City of Roswell embarked upon an effort called “Reinventing Roswell,” which envisions an improved and enhanced customer service experience for all who interact with the City. Times of transformation and growth can be filled with excitement but also apprehension. Linda says the key to helping an organization navigate change is being able to explain the why and to make employees part of the process. “We need to tell the story, and we need to make sure our people understand what a critical part they play in that story,” says Linda. “Together, we make change happen.” Linda says her Roswell team is the best she has ever managed. “My team has so much heart about what they do. They give everything 120%. No matter what, they bring the same passion, the same kindness, the same respect to everybody.” It always comes back to the same ideal: Do everything with the spirit of excellence.
