In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and it encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, and giving back to community with an award winning comedian. He and wife give to many charities and you can read more on page 32. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We even wrote about several local schools and students making a difference. We are especially thankful for our branding partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. MEET Jason! Jason was born a preemie and spent many days in NICU and by age one he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Today, Jason is wheelchair bound and uses a wheelchair like a boss! Jason is dependent on help with feeding and everyday life. Both parents were lifting him in and out of a tub to bathe along with carrying through some of their house because his wheelchair would not fit. Sunshine on a Ranney Day renovated Jason’s home to give him a large fully accessible bathroom, widened doorways, ramp into house, and large accessible dream bedroom. Since Jason is a big Atlanta Falcons fan, he was surprised with signed memorabilia from Kyle Pitts for his room. Jason and his family were also featured at the Evening of Sunshine Gala and surprised with a helicopter entrance and Falcons cheerleaders!

In the heart of Roswell, a revolution in healthcare has been taking place over the past year. SmartMED DriveThru Medical Care has emerged as a beacon of hope, providing a new and convenient way for residents to access essential medical services. This innovative approach to healthcare ensures that everyone, from grandparents to grandchildren, receives the care they need—all from the comfort of their own cars. The idea was born out of the COVID-19 pandemic. After running a Covid testing site in Roswell and seeing more than 22,000 patients during the height of the pandemic, Dr. Luke Lathrop, a local ER physician, and his wife Stacy brainstormed how to not only better serve patients, but also the community. "Covid helped us rethink medical care. A visit to the doctor shouldn't take 2 or 3 hours. You shouldn't have to wait 6-plus months for an appointment," says Dr. Lathrop. The Lathrops embarked on a journey to make healthcare more accessible and safer for everyone, especially young families like their own. Thus, a little over a year ago, SmartMED Drive-Thru Medical Care was born. At SmartMED, patients receive full medical evaluations, testing, diagnosis, and treatment from the comfort of their car. “I knew that this concept would make medical care more convenient, but a beautiful surprise has been the deep connections that we have made with families seeking care," says Stacy Lathrop. Julie Minton brought her three children to SmartMED when they were sick, and soon after referred her parents, Candace and Thomas Barry. “SmartMED is such a gift in several ways. As we are getting older, we so appreciate being able to stay in our car to be evaluated rather than sitting in a crowded waiting room full of others who are ill,” says Candace. “But in our opinion, their biggest strength is the one-on-one care they deliver with such warmth and compassion. Their level of care and concern is truly unmatched.” Julie agreed, “Best of all, it’s so convenient. We pull up, see the doctor, and within 10 minutes we are driving out. On the way home, we receive a call with

Cheerleaders and football players judging a macaroni and cheese contest might seem like an unexpected pairing to some, but not in Roswell at Deep Roots Wine Market. Some of my teammates and I, from Roswell High football and cheer, had the opportunity to do just that. We sampled six different cheesy goodness dishes from various restaurants around Roswell. While the boys finished their plates with the enthusiasm you would expect from large growing boys, we cheerleaders took our time and tasted little bites of each dish carefully. We were instructed to judge on flavor, texture, creativity, originality, and presentation, and submit our score sheets. CONTINUED >

Although we had different thoughts about the dishes, we all appreciated the diverse interpretations of mac and cheese. Most of us are used to Kraft from a box, so it was a delicious treat for us all. Even though we wore uniforms and jerseys and carried forks, not robes with gavels, we all took our job very seriously and tried to give it our all. Overall, it was a great experience, and we were thankful to be a part of such a delicious event.

A respected mainstay in the comedy world, Jeff launched his career by winning the Great Southeastern Laugh-Off at Atlanta’s Punchline Comedy Club in 1984. Since then, he has authored more than 26 books, hosted several successful game shows, and led the hugely successful Blue Collar Comedy tour. The brainchild of longtime CURE supporters Sylvia and Pat Tylka, the black-tie Believe Ball began in 2014. The 2023 event marks a decade of generosity and will exceed the incredible milestone of raising more than $10 million since its inception. A highlight of the Believe Ball will be CURE’s presentation of the Ragab Spirit of Hope Award to Lendmark Financial Services and its CEO Bobby Aiken. Named for Dr. Abdel Ragab, Emory University’s first pediatric oncologist and CURE’s founder, the award is presented to individuals who exemplify the dedication, compassion and commitment to children with cancer that Dr. Ragab embodied. “Bobby Aiken is the epitome of a servant leader. He is so inspiring that the entire company has embraced his vision and made it their own,” says Kristin Connor, CEO of CURE. The Lendmark annual Climb to CURE campaign has grown from a one-day event to the company’s cornerstone philanthropic initiative. Through the Climb to CURE, Bobby and the Lendmark associates have raised more than $6.73 million through employee, partner and community fundraising efforts – including a $2 million donation raised in 2023 alone.

Roswell’s Matt and Kelly Gilley experienced the childhood cancer journey with their son Jason, a college athlete, who was diagnosed with stage 3 testicular cancer at age 19. After his orchiectomy, he started chemo. While the treatments were tough on Jason physically and mentally, the family commends the incredible care team at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and CURE. “CURE met us within the first hour of our first day and gave us thorough packets of information and boxed lunches,” said Matt Gilley. “We saw throughout Jason’s nine weeks of chemo how amazing CURE was, especially for families from out of town and others that needed resources.” The Gilleys vowed to give back and get involved with CURE when Jason finished treatment. The family, including siblings Tyler and Anna and his dog Beignet, are all thrilled that Jason is in remission and back at school playing ball again.

A SIMPLER LIFE – FOXWORTHY ON THE FARM

Today Jeff and his wife Gregg have moved to a farm in Georgia to create more memories for their family. “The farm is beautiful. It’s my place to unplug from the world. The only thing that makes me happier than sitting on a tractor is doing so with my grandson in my lap. Being on the farm has taught me a lot about being still.” Jeff attributes his ability to balance his successful career to staying grounded in God, his family, and his long-time friends. “I was a little boy from Hapeville who got very lucky.” “Not only is Jeff a comedy genius and a constant advocate for children with cancer, but most people don’t know how much Jeff does for the community,” says Connor. “He gives of himself without fanfare. So while we love his comedy, we also love his character."

The month of November at Queen of Angels Catholic School is a time of gratitude and giving, a time for each of us to be grateful for our many blessings and to serve others. Queen of Angels, founded in 1999, is a K-8 Archdiocesan Regional Catholic School in Roswell. One of the pillars of Queen of Angels is to empower students both inside and outside of the classroom by providing opportunities for meaningful service. “Christian service is an integral element of our Catholic life and educational programs. By exposing students to the needs of others, they are able to find and cultivate their own talents and leadership in areas that are beneficial to others. Students are empowered and inspired through these opportunities. “Being with the people at Georgian Lakeside Terrace made me feel good inside because we were doing God’s work,” 2nd grader Rosie shared after reflecting on her recent service project. After the Hoops for Hearts program that assists special needs athletes from other Fulton County schools, 5th grader Hannah wrote, “This opportunity taught me that while people are different on the outside, we are all the same on the inside. In the past two years, there has been a 55% increase in overdose deaths in the state of Georgia. One local nonprofit is not only providing long-term treatment that works, but also helping men find new careers as well. Located in Cumming, No Longer Bound is a long-term, residential, faith-based, evidence-based treatment program that affords men the time they need to uncover the root cause of their addiction. For 32 years No Longer Bound has been a refuge and a therapeutic community for men, providing one full year of evidence-based addiction treatment, family and marriage counseling, spiritual formation, vocational training, and job placement. One of the biggest challenges for people in early recovery is the mitigation of legal and

financial problems, as well as educational gaps and the need for vocational rehabilitation. The role of work in a person's life goes far beyond the economic value it provides. Work provides purpose and a means for supporting one’s family, which is why in addition to addiction treatment, No Longer Bound offers four vocational tracks. Culinary training, digital marketing, landscape design, and an auto mechanic training program are all designed to give men purpose in their day while providing opportunities to learn new skills and apply what they are learning in real-life work environments. “The main reason I chose No Longer Bound is because I like to work,” says one No Longer Bound resident. “If I was going to commit a year of my life to getting well, I wanted to work.” “As a

volunteer through North Point Community Church, who spends time with the men there, I am excited to see the progress of the men and how the leadership team are always working to improve the process and success for the program,” says Mark Lazinski. “There are many serving opportunities; from helping around the grounds to serving dinner to the men and fellowshipping with them. Just call the main office and ask.” No Longer Bound Cars is a car donation program for residents on No Longer Bound’s campus where they can learn automotive, motorcycle, and engine repair. The goal is that when a man in this training program graduates from the program, he will not only be one year clean and sober, but he will also have the skills to gain an entry-level auto technician job. Currently, there are No Longer Bound graduates working at Christian Brothers Automotive, Honda Carland, Billy Howell Ford, and Scott’s Automotive, to name a few. Unlike other car donation programs, 100% of the revenue earned from repaired and sold vehicles goes back to funding the program.

With a degree in food science and an interest in biochemistry and physiology, Sue Becker, co-founder of The Bread Beckers, Inc., has strived to provide the most nutritious foods for her family. In 1991, after reading an article published in a medical journal, she learned that whole grains are one of the most nutrient-dense foods given to us - but only when the flour is freshly-milled. The Roswell Wine Festival was established in 2012 by long time friends Peggy Robinson and Dwight Cunningham. After graduating from college at Johnson & Wales University, both moved to Roswell and fell in love with the area. With a shared passion for wine, they wanted to create an event which provides an exceptional experience for wine enthusiasts, supports the business community, and benefits local charities. Both co-founders have earned Wine & Spirit Education Trust level two certifications, with merit. Through ticket sales, sponsorships, and restaurant participation, the festival has been able to support some of Roswell's beloved organizations like The Cottage School, Historic Roswell's Beautification Project, The Giving Kitchen, Children's Development Academy, Keep Roswell Beautiful, and The Roswell Arts Fund. year, the 2023 festival will benefit Friends of Mimosa Hall and Gardens. Try this classic fall cocktail, combining the warm flavors of apple cider and bourbon with a touch of spice and citrus.

SPICED A PPLE CI DER BOU R BON COCK TA I L INGREDIENTS • 2 ounces bourbon • 4 ounces fresh apple cider • 1/2 ounce lemon juice • 1/2 ounce simple syrup (adjust to taste) • 1 cinnamon stick • 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters • Ice cubes • Apple slices and cinnamon sticks for garnish (optional) • Ground cinnamon and sugar for rimming the glass (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. Rim the Glass (optional): If you want to add a decorative touch, mix a small amount of ground cinnamon and sugar on a plate. Moisten the rim of your glass with a lemon wedge and gently dip it into the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat the rim. 2. Prepare the Cocktail: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.Add the bourbon, fresh apple cider, lemon juice, and simple syrup to the shaker.Shake well for about 15-20 seconds to chill and mix the ingredients thoroughly. 3. Strain and Serve: Fill a rocks glass with fresh ice cubes.Strain the cocktail mixture from the shaker into the glass. 4. Add Bitters and Garnish: Add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters to the top of the cocktail. This adds a pleasant aromatic complexity.Stir gently with a cinnamon stick to incorporate the bitters. 5. Garnish and Enjoy: Optionally, garnish your cocktail with a slice of apple and another cinnamon stick for a festive look.

Jennifer Astrop met Zorro, the namesake of her 68-acre horse sanctuary in Chattahoochee Hills when her son Alex began hippotherapy after he became sick at age 6. Hippotherapy or equine-assisted therapy involves physical, occupational, and speech therapy using the natural movements of the horse to provide motor and sensory input for children with special needs. Zorro had a huge, positive impact on Alex and on Jennifer herself. Their shared experience would change both of their lives forever. Jennifer founded Zorro’s Crossing Horse Sanctuary after her son had sessions with Zorro as a hippotherapy horse. When he was going to be retired, the Astrop family adopted Zorro and in doing so, realized many more horses needed a sanctuary to live out their senior and retired years. “Zorro’s Crossing provides permanent homes for horses cast aside primarily by the racing industry,” says Jennifer. “We rescue, rehabilitate, and give our horses a forever home." Rescued racehorses, saved from uncertain futures, undergo a profound transformation as they embark on a new career as therapy horses. The transition involves more than just a change of geographical location. It represents a shift from the world of competition to one of compassion and healing. Racehorses are highly sensitive and in tune with their surroundings. Horses can sense the emotions and needs of their human companions, making them ideal

partners in therapy for children and adults with special learning, physical, or emotional needs. The magic of rescued racehorses in the therapy environment lies in the profound connection they forge with their human counterparts. Through gentle interactions and therapeutic activities, the horse and the rider develop a beautiful trust. They, as horse and rider, build confidence, learn to communicate effectively, set boundaries, and develop emotional awareness. “We have just launched Wonder, our hippotherapy program, with Sue Soha who originally taught Alex on Zorro,” says Jennifer. “Our goal is to expand this program with more horses and riders so that hippotherapy is readily accessible to all of those people who need it.” Zorro’s Crossing Horse Sanctuary is a nationally recognized 501(c)3 where funds raised are designated to the care of their current and future rescued horses and to further establish and develop their hippotherapy program. It is currently the forever home to ten beautiful horses who have acres of green pastures and farmland to roam and call home. “We love our horses unconditionally and keep them safe from harm for the rest of their lives,” says Jennifer. When not working in the showroom at Minotti, Jennifer can be found working with Zorro’s Crossing and involving her family as much as possible with the sanctuary and the horses. “I think it is therapeutic for our entire family to work with the horses.” For Jennifer, interior designer, co-founder of Minotti by HA Modern in Atlanta, and the founder of Zorro’s Crossing Horse Sanctuary, there is no more intense a connection than that between a human and a horse. “I have always been an animal lover and have had a special place in my heart for horses since I was a girl,” says Jennifer. “I took riding lessons beginning at age 5 and rode horses at summer camp.”

Profiles in Leadership Roswell’s Sharon Izzo Shapes Success in Her Career, Her Team, and Her Community Sharon Izzo grew up climbing dirt piles. The daughter of a civil site contractor, Sharon would accompany her father to his work sites, and while he checked on his jobs, Sharon would clamber up mounds of freshly turned earth and marvel at the transformation happening at the site, imagining how it would change the community. She excelled in math and science throughout school, so when the time came to choose a career, Sharon knew she would be an engineer. “I wanted to be the kind of engineer that built things, like the projects I had seen my father work on for all those years,” Sharon says. “I wanted to be able to see and touch what I designed.” Sharon was accepted to one of the best civil engineering schools on the East Coast, Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, not too far from where she grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs. While in school, she had an opportunity to intern with environmental engineering firm O’Brien and Gere. There, she learned firsthand about water infrastructure and the vital function of environmental engineering. Sharon could have pursued many different paths within the engineering discipline, but her experience at O’Brien and Gere convinced her that civil engineering would be her life’s work. “What I love about being a civil engineer is that we’re building infrastructure for communities to allow people to move safely from place to place, to have clean water to drink, and proper sanitation,” says Sharon. “What we do allows people to live good lives.” After earning her degree from Lehigh, O’Brien and Gere hired her as a Senior Project Engineer. Sharon managed multiple water system design projects and distinguished herself as an expert in elevated water storage, winning awards for her innovative designs. During this time, she earned her Professional Engineer (PE) license—and she also discovered her love for project management and community outreach.

“People in residential areas are not often happy about water storage tanks being built near their neighborhoods, so I did a lot of community outreach to help people understand the ‘why’ of our projects,” Sharon says. “Once they understand the importance, they often work with us to find the best solutions for their community. I loved being part of that process, helping make decisions that will benefit people for generations to come.” The next steps in Sharon’s career would bring her into closer alignment with the impactful community work she so valued, eventually leading her to contract positions with the City of Sandy Springs and, finally, to Roswell in 2016. “From the time my family moved to the Atlanta area, Roswell was on my radar as somewhere I wanted to work,” says Sharon. “I had raised my family in nearby Cobb County, and my kids had participated in Roswell’s amazing recreation programs. I knew this was a special place, and I really wanted to serve this community.” Starting as Support Services Manager for the City of Roswell’s Environmental/Public Works (EPW) Department, Sharon quickly became an indispensable member of the team. Her expertise and leadership skills led to her selection as Deputy Director of Roswell’s EPW Department in 2018 and her promotion to Department Director in 2022. Under her leadership, the EPW Department has flourished and distinguished itself with several prestigious awards, including multiple “Water Treatment Plant of the Year” recognitions and the “Platinum Award for Water Distribution.” Sharon herself has garnered top accolades in her field, including being chosen in March 2023 by Engineering Georgia magazine as one of the “100 Most Influential Women in Georgia Engineering.” The success of Sharon’s teams is due in large part to her approach to building staff relationships by focusing on individual talents and building collaborative teams with complementary strengths. In 2023, Sharon was promoted to Roswell’s Deputy City Administrator of Utilities, Infrastructure, and Facilities—an executive-level position in which she hopes to continue to support staff success. “I was fortunate to have amazing bosses who understood the importance of mentoring and encouraging personal and professional growth, and that’s exactly what I try to do,” she says. “When people know you care about them and you’ve got their best interests at heart, things really flourish.” Throughout Sharon’s impressive journey, she has had the support of her husband and four children, who have each reflected her drive and success in their own lives. When her youngest left for college, Sharon decided to find a hobby to help counterbalance her growing professional responsibilities and provide a creative outlet. She had always loved pottery, so she started taking classes at Roswell’s Arts Center West. Now, when she’s not in meetings or working on important projects with her staff, she can be found spending hours at the pottery wheel, transforming clay into something beautiful and useful. Once again, as so long ago, her hands full of earth, imagining the possibilities.
