Welcome to the August issue of Roswell City Lifestyle As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier routines, schedules and perhaps a little more traffic! The summers tend to feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures never get old. Although the routine of school and back to work is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. August is my birth month and for several friends and family members so it is a continued celebration for us anyway! This issue features some of the cutest members in our community—kids and pets. We highlight some loving pets and their loyal owners and new ways to have fun and get exercise with a few very cute animals as well. There are even some heartwarming stories about healing options for your beloved 4 legged furbabies on page 42. Additionally, we shine a local spotlight and interview with Laura Knott-Riggal, who shares ways to help moms and kids lead better lives daily on page 38. Don't miss our fun featured recipes for those days ahead in August for moms and kids of all ages alike, cheers to you! Fire Captain Job Posted To better serve our growing community, the City of Roswell will transition the Roswell Fire Department (RFD) over the next five years from a staffing model that has relied on part-time employees, to one that will be staffed entirely by full-time employees. AN ARTIST SPEAKS WE ASKED ROSWELL ARTIST, KIM BARTHOLOMEW WHAT INSPIRES HER

I am an artist, consultant, and teacher living in Roswell. I grew up in Vidalia, Georgia and have always had a passion for the arts. After a 15 year career in art education and graduate degrees in counseling psychology, I merged my passions and launched a path to creating my own works as a form of therapy for the soul – for myself and viewers of my work.

As an abstract artist, my work is steeped in patterns of stylized silhouettes, curvilinear visual rhythm, and symbolic (rather than realistic) colors and shapes. I work in a variety of media, creating a series of themes to express what is felt beyond what is seen. My original works, commissioned pieces, giclées, prints, cards, and related products can be viewed and purchased on my website and at local exhibits. A portion of all sales is donated to Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind where my niece, McKenzie Rose Bartholomew, attends school in St. Augustine, Florida. I also launched an accessory and clothing line featuring my original art images. Art Wear By KPB welcomes you to shop for fun and fabulous art that you wear. This creative outlet makes my work easily accessible and allows for a greater audience beyond art collectors. “Live a beautiful life!” is more than a tagline to me. I maintain and proclaim that God fashioned me for His glory. I am merely a vessel for the Divine Spark! For me, art has always been a means of exploration and expression of the spiritual context. That intrigued me and led me to obtain graduate degrees in counseling psychology. RUNNING FOR PARKINSON’S BOB BRENNER Bob Brenner has spent the better part of the last decade long-distance running, and twice that time caring for seniors at Sunrise Senior Living in Sandy Springs. When the opportunity to combine the two activities presented itself, he ran with it (pun intended). “Around the time I was turning 50, I got on a health kick, and part of that was running,” Brenner told us. Being raised in Massachusetts, he eventually set his sights on the Boston Marathon, which he referred to as “the Granddaddy" of long-distance races. The event consistently attracts the best runners from around the world, and the qualifications to join are strict. “The only way to get in was a charity entry,” he said. "Parkinson's Disease has been near and dear to my heart for a long time. My mother-in-law had it for over 20 years and eventually succumbed to it." Brenner reached out and began working with the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which focuses on Parkinson's disease research and is one of the charities affiliated with the famed race. He began preparation, often running in the Brookhaven and Dunwoody areas, but there

was one more thing to handle: a financial obligation. “I had to raise $15,000," he said. “Once you commit, you cannot come in and go ‘well, I only got $9,000.' You owe the remainder.” With the help of his wife Dana, friends, family, and the backing of Sunrise Senior Living, Bob raised $38,000 - more than twice what was required. Sunrise’s support was crucial, as Parkinson's is a major ailment for many of their patients. With all qualifications met, Bob was able to run in the Boston Marathon, which he completed in April of this year. In a statement Sunrise Senior Living issued to us, they commended Brenner on his achievement and character: “Bob truly is living the Sunrise mission of ‘championing quality of life for all seniors’ through his passion, diligence, and hard work to support such a worthy cause to end Parkinson’s.” If you would like to join Bob, Sunrise, and others in the fight to end Parkinson's, you can donate to the Michael J. When Nashville’s Maggie Rose released her critically-acclaimed album Have A Seat, she defied the expectations set for her as a “country artist.” The album, produced by Ben Turner of Alabama Shakes and recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama (Etta James, Credence Clearwater Revival), boasts R&B/soul influences, while calling for unity in a world divided. The CMT-recognized artist played at City Green Live in Sandy Springs in June in front of a packed house of fans, family and friends. She graciously spoke with us

about her new album, and her female-songwriter-focused podcast Salute The Songbird. Have A Seat came out in 2021 and people love it. What about this album resonates with listeners differently than your prior releases? This album came out when we were able to physically gather again. To have music that brings us together is a relief after the pandemic. The songs are about inclusivity and compassion. Those themes are nice to keep in mind when we’re societally having a difficult time communicating.

From what I could tell, "Have A Seat " [also a lyric in the song "What Are We Fighting For?"] means “let’s sit down and talk it out.” Absolutely. It’s about making room for people who want to sit at that proverbial table. Like, the song “For Your Consideration” is me addressing rhetoric that I was seeing across the board. There were people not even willing to agree to disagree. The first step in showing compassion is by giving people the space to say what they’re feeling.

What brought you to Ben Tanner as a producer? Ben Tanner was introduced to me by my publisher, Katie Fagan. After [my 2019 album] Change The Whole Thing, I wanted to make an album with soul and vibrance. Ben Tanner, is well versed in the Muscle Shoals sound, being part of Alabama Shakes, and is managed by one of Katie’s best friends. It just came together really organically. How did Salute the Songbird come together? The pandemic was the instigator for the project. I was a guest on another podcast called Past Present Future Live with RJ Bee, one of the cofounders of Osiris, where my podcast is produced. The producer realized, “we don’t have very many female hosts.” They loved that interview and asked me if it would be something that I was interested in. I jumped at it to reconnect to artists I’d grown accustomed to seeing on a regular basis. There are no specified openers for your summer tour. Is it important to give local artists a spot opening for touring acts? Absolutely. I’ve been given a leg up by other artists, so if I can extend an opportunity to someone who’s hitting the pavement and sweating it out, then that’s what I’m going to do.

Is there any advice that you would give artists starting out in this industry? You can do things in your own way. I subscribed to so many other people’s rules when I first moved to Nashville. I thought that was the only way to do it. If you see a path that’s more ambitious, more comfortable - don’t be afraid to ask for it. That is totally within your right and your power.

Founded by Laura Knott-Riggall, M.A., CCC-SLP in 2012, North Paulding Speech Language Therapy is one of the most respected speech language therapy clinics in Georgia. We sat down with Laura to find out more about the services offered in the Roswell office.

RCL: CAN YOU GIVE US AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT KIND OF THERAPY YOU ARE DOING WITH KIDS UNDER 10, TEENS, YOUNG ADULTS AND ALSO ADULTS? Laura Knott-Riggall, North Paulding: Absolutely! We serve infant-mother dyads who are struggling to breastfeed, children of all ages who are not eating a variety of foods or are struggling to chew and swallow foods, children and teens with tethered oral tissues (tongue and lip ties) that are affecting their articulation/eating/breathing/sleeping, children and teens who have mild-severe articulation disorders including phonological processes and apraxia of speech, children and teens with weakness in understanding and/or using language to communicate socially or to understand school content areas. We are able to treat adults, but the majority of patients are our pediatric patients.

RCL: WHAT ARE SOME UNIQUE TOOLS AND STRATEGIES THAT YOUR OFFICE HAS FOUND SUCCESS WITH? LKR: We have a Certified Breastfeeding Specialist on staff to help babies successfully latch and therefore gain weight. We have training on PROMPT, SOS Approach to Feeding, Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder training through the IAOM. Combined, we have years of experience in both the schools and in private practice.

When Julie Fisher first came into our store in June 2021, she was at her wit’s end, exhausted and in tears. Her 80-pound rescue dog, Jackson, suffered from hip dysplasia and had recently started vomiting 20-30 times a night. She had taken Jackson to several veterinarians and specialists and after spending thousands of dollars on visits, multiple medications, and prescription foods, they had yet been able to diagnose the issue nor relieve his symptoms. Jackson’s condition was finally diagnosed as megaesophagus, a disorder in which the esophagus dilates and loses the ability to swallow and move food into the stomach. While treating the cause of his condition, the HEAL oil tincture was able to immediately relieve the pain caused by scar tissue created by blockages, and significantly reduced the vomiting. Plus, he actually LOVES the taste of his tincture and eagerly laps it up. But most importantly? A good night’s sleep for both Jackson and Julie! Today: A year later, Jackson no longer aspirates or suffers from the symptoms caused by megaesophagus.

MEET MAXWELL Nadine Schwartz’s dog Maxwell suffered from severe separation anxiety. The owner of her dog walking service, Fur Responders, recommended she try CBD to help little Max manage his anxiety. A partnership initiative with the City of Roswell, ArtAround Roswell, is an outdoor public art sculpture collection hosted throughout the city’s acclaimed park system, historic district and private businesses. This free “museum without walls” includes large-scale sculptures from the city’s permanent collection and temporary pieces loaned by the artists for a period of one year. All of the temporary pieces are available for purchase. Led by RAF’s public art manager Elan Buchan, the sculptures were selected by a public art panel based on criteria including quality, diversity, and how the sculpture would spark conversation, delight visitors, and activate public spaces. For the seventh season of ArtAround Roswell, artists were asked to explore the theme of tradition: What made us who we are? How can we learn from the past? What do we celebrate as a community? Each artist answered the theme in their own unique way. From celebrating the stories and memories stitched into a patchwork quilt, incorporating everyday framing material into cascading patterns, and reflecting on the importance of intergenerational communication, these are just a few of the explorations the selected artists shared in response to the theme. RAF is excited to welcome this new collection and looks forward to connecting with the community as they explore the pieces.

PET: GREG RANNEY, FRENCH BULLDOG Humans: Peter & Holly Ranney Greg brings a smile to everyone he meets. His sad face is really his happy face. Peter & Holly Ranney, founders of the nonprofit, Sunshine on a Ranney Day, adopted Greg in 2020 to add to their animal crew of pigs, mini donkeys and chickens. Greg actually works at their Sunny & Ranney Home Furnishings & Decor store during the week as a greeter. In fact, sometimes you have to step over him while he’s snoring in the doorway as he gets really tired from socializing. When Greg is not working, he loves to vacation in their RV sitting in the front seat looking all around. Greg and Tucker Ranney are best buds and inseparable.

PET: ROSIE Human: Jackie Blyth-Gottlieb Franchise owner, Office Evolution-Roswell She loves people! Her job at Office Evolution-Roswell is to greet people, roll over and demand belly rubs. She loves to make the rounds and visit everyone in the center if they are not busy. She enjoys a game of catch in the halls and is always ready to give a hug or snuggle to anyone experiencing a stressful day. Even the most well-dressed top executives become little children with melted hearts when they interact with her. The right attitude helps everyone work smarter, swifter, and smoother. Go Rosie! For fun, she loves the dog park, walking with her owner, playing catch, hanging out at the tennis courts, and playing keep-away with her toys from her two doggy brothers. When we decided to get a puppy, my husband wanted a border collie and I wanted a poodle. We didn’t know there was a mix of our two favorite breeds. We found Rosie at Mountain Rose Bordoodles. She is now 1 year old.

PET: WOODFORD THE WONDER PUP Human: Tran Bui Smith For years when my animal-obsessed son Jackson and daughter Ava would ask, beg and pray for a dog, I would give them the same response, "I'll think about it." In 2016 shortly after moving to Atlanta, I gave in. It was our second move in three years and the kids were missing friends and family. My husband Scott and I planned a special Christmas delivery. The kids opened the front door to find a giant box with their names on it. Inside was a precious little black lab and poodle mix pup with soulful eyes and a joyful personality. We named him Woodford the Wonder Pup and boy is he wonderful. The person who kept saying "not now" is the one who is the most attached to this bundle of puppy love. My group, Little Helpers volunteers with Mostly Mutts Animal Rescue where I'm also a foster dog mom.

1 cup frozen pineapple 1 cup frozen strawberries 2 tablespoons cream of coconut 8 oz coconut water

directions: Add all ingredients to a high-powered blender. Blend until smooth. Consistency should be nice and thick from the frozen fruit. Add a little more coconut water if too thick. Perfectly fruity & hydrating for a hot August day in Georgia!

MARVELOUS MRS. BASIL ingredients: • • • • • •

2-3 large strawberries 2 large basil leaves 1/2 oz agave 3/4 oz fresh-squeezed lemon juice Seltzer water *optional: add 1.5 oz vodka or gin

directions: Muddle strawberries, basil, agave, and lemon juice. Add ice and top with seltzer water. Garnish with basil leaves. *If momma needs a little somethin’ extra, add 1.5 oz of vodka or gin before you add the seltzer. Stir and enjoy! More recipes and inspiration at HomeBarNetwork.com

Cathi Huff had wanted a horse ever since she was a little girl. After doing some research, Cathi was introduced to Atlantis Dream, a retired thoroughbred racehorse from New York. She brought him home to Milton, renamed him “Bronx,” and gave her property the namesake, “Atlantis Dream Farm.” Of course, Bronx needed friends, so Cathi soon began to welcome an ark's worth of farm animals including goats, pigs, sheep, geese, dogs, cats, and chickens. One day, while looking out her kitchen window at the abundance of love, peace, and joy, Cathi realized she wanted to share the Atlantis Dream Farm experience with as many people as she could. With certifications in holistic health and wellness coaching, yoga instruction, meditation,
