Welcome to our June issue of Roswell City Lifestyle. An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, someone who sees the best in us, someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can have on our lives. My father is, and has been, one of my heroes my entire life. He served as a mentor to young people who were fatherless. He coached youth sports for many years. He served in his church, all the while being a loving husband and father at home for his family. He led his peers in the business world with great humility and success. He taught me so many things; but most of all, he taught me what unconditional love means without judgement. I am eternally grateful and blessed that I had such an inspiring role model in my life and today I still look up to him always - as he is 6 foot, 4 inches tall! This month, I am proud that we can we can honor a few local men and their contribution to the growth and health of our community. We are highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it. Simply put, without our frontline health workers, there would be no current health services for thousands of local Roswell families. Frontline health workers are the backbone of effective health systems, and they are often based in the community they serve.

While the restaurant and hospitality industries have been hit with the brunt of the COVID struggles, it pales in comparison to the struggles of the front line workers who manage testing sites and provide bedside care in hospitals. It’s a struggle that Chef Nate Armstrong

recognized and has made an aim to impact. “During such difficult times in our community, we wanted to find the best way to share and show our appreciation for our local frontline workers. We have had such tremendous support from our community, we felt it is important to pay it forward to those who put their lives at risk every day for our health and well-being,” said Armstrong, Owner of Big Oak Tavern. In 2020, at the height of the first wave of COVID, Chef Nate leveraged Big Oak Tavern to lead multiple community initiatives.

SCHOOL MEAL PROGRAM: Restaurantled initiative that focused on feeding over 1250 children that were without food due to mandatory shelter in place orders. COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE: Organized a community blood drive in partnership with Carl Black dealership, which helped in collecting more than 127 pints of blood. HERO MEALS: Through community donations, Big Oak Tavern was able to feed more than nine COVID ICU floors (600 frontline staff ) and two fire departments. With the recent uptick in COVID cases a few months back, Nate took his Hero Meals to the next level and partnered with hospital and county CEOs to get meals to those most impacted on the frontlines. Through community donations, Nate used proceeds to help feed the clinical resources tirelessly managing COVID in the community. “Our aim was to surpass efforts from 2020-2021. Thanks to the support of our community, we are pleased to share that we recently served our 3,000th Hero Meal. We intend to provide thousands more over the course of 2022. The program will continue indefinitely to support the heroes that impact our lives in a positive way.” Some examples of Big Oak Hero Meals menu include smoked chicken, brisket, and ribeye steaks, along with heaping sides of mashed potatoes, collard greens and steamed seasonal veggies. My life has been anything but ordinary. I was born and raised in Southern Virginia in a poor family. I would say we struggled a great deal, but we didn’t know, because everyone in our neighborhood was poor. We thought that was the norm. Unlike a lot of my friends, I didn’t have the advantage of a father who was involved in my life. My dad was present until he passed, but he was disabled for as long as I can remember and didn’t emotionally engage with us kids. I do believe he loved us in his own way. It’s just that you can only give to others what you know or have experienced yourself. He didn’t have the fathering skills to pass on to us. I was, however, blessed in that there were men in my life from whom I received very positive input. For instance, my grandfather (we called him Pawpaw), was a very positive influence during my formative years. I remember that he would always tell my brothers to bring me inside the house if he felt I was around the wrong element. I would see one of them coming to get me and would curse, under my breath of course. I would never say a cross word to him. He was larger than life to me! I would begrudgingly amble into his room. I would sit at his bedside, since he was battling illness. He would sit up, point his bony finger at me and sternly say, “You’re a special boy! There’s something special inside you and you’re going to be different from those kids outside.” I didn’t completely understand what he meant at the time, but I did eventually. Years later, his encouragement came in handy. Contrary to what my Pawpaw said,

my high school guidance counselor had a different opinion of my future. She told me that I didn’t have what it took to go to college and should consider construction or welding. Thankfully, Pawpaw had equipped me well with self-confidence and value. Even though he had long passed, I remembered his words. I applied to three colleges and was accepted to two. A master’s degree and doctoral studies later, I’ve enjoyed a pretty great career and I believe I’ve proved my “guidance” counselor wrong. I’ve pastored successful churches in numerous cities, have been a Wall Street executive, a dean of arts and a Regional VP, while all the time counseling couples about their relationships. Roswell has been home to me and my wife for almost three years and we have been proud Georgians for nearly 13. We and our three kids have all made Roswell our home. My life and career have taken me all over the world, yet I’m still the same little shirtless country boy at heart. I’ve also been privileged to reach literally millions of relationships through the number one show on Lifetime TV, Married at First Sight. I consider this a labor of love for Wendy and me. I have also begun a nonprofit called Mentouring Manhood. The goal is to help men fully learn the lessons of manhood and become better fathers, husbands, and sons. Tucked away on just over 400 acres in Fayetteville, folks can be found providing support to a group of military veterans, on a high-ropes course with children who are differently abled, or tending gardens of organically grown produce. A decade ago, Camp Southern Ground was a dream in the mind of GRAMMY Award-winning musician, Zac Brown. Today, it is a beautiful, world-class representation of Zac’s heart for the underserved and for those who have served. The youngest of 12 kids and step-kids in his family, Zac was sent to summer camp every chance his parents got. He started at camps in North Georgia at age 7 as

a camper, then after college, worked as a staff member. Those camps were designed as inclusion camps, meaning the campers were both neurotypical and neurodiverse, or special needs. The impact that the special needs kids had on the typical kids was what Zac noticed the most. Zac learned the importance of an inclusive environment and that is what inspired the vision of Camp Southern Ground. The desire to break down barriers and misconceptions about those who are differently-abled has been the core of Zac’s mission. Camp Southern Ground (CSG) is, distinctively, a 4-way inclusion camp serving neurotypical kids, CONTINUED >

special needs kids, children of military families, and underserved youth. During every week of summer camp, all are connecting, learning and growing together. “Since Zac Brown was already a national brand”, said Mike Dobbs, President and CEO of Camp Southern Ground, “we spent our initial years building the operations with a national focus. That has allowed us to get the programs set up and rolled out. We are now better equipped to serve locally.” They have recently rolled out water safety training for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and are planning more community family events. CSG’s residential summer camp serves the I/DD population and typically developing kids, ages 7-17. Currently, any camper with I/DD will need to be able to communicate and handle their own self-care, but there are plans for providing respite care services for more involved levels of disability. “The greatest challenge for the inclusion camp model is to ensure every “tribe” (or group of campers) is represented proportionately. Going back to Zac’s experience, we want both typical kids and those with different needs to have a great camp experience and learn the benefits of being together. Having kids with I/DD going to camp with neurotypical kids, that’s where the magic happens for both. The perspective gained on both sides is huge,” said Dobbs. The tuition for a week-long inclusion summer camp experience is just under $2,000, but most campers don’t pay that. There are discounts for early registration and sliding scales based on income. Veterans and their families also hold a special place in Zac’s heart. Because Zac has been able to leverage partnerships with organizations like the Gary Sinise Foundation Avalon Network and others, including Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank of Home Depot, veterans can come from all over the country at no cost to them. In non-summer months, Camp Southern Ground provides specific, topical support

“The diagnosis of ovarian cancer changed my wife forever. It made her a different woman,” says Joseph Hemati of his wife’s reaction to the news from her doctor. When Sam shared her news with Joseph, he was shocked and could not believe what he had just heard from his wife. “I was devastated. It changed our lives. I cried like a baby and I think that God heard my cries.” Joseph was in a meeting when he received a call from a co-worker who told him that his wife needed him to come home. “It was one of the worst days of my life.” Joseph speaks very highly of his beautiful wife and business partner. “She is the most dedicated mother and grandmother. She is known for her honesty and her hard work.” Joseph believes that there is a lack of knowledge and information about the symptoms of ovarian cancer. “People really have no clue about this disease,” he says. For Sam and Joseph there was only one week between her diagnosis and the surgery. Thankfully, their friends and family all came together to support them. Sam Threeths of Roswell is an ovarian cancer survivor and is a proud supporter of the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance. She and her husband both believe that it is everyone’s duty to discuss the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. As a result of their journey, they have become advocates for early detection. “Take five minutes and call your gynecologist. Ask questions about ovarian cancer. Make sure that you and every woman in your life is okay.” GOCA continues to touch the lives of women and their families across our state through awareness and educational programs such as Teal to Heal, the annual fashion show hosted by Tootsie’s of Buckhead, and The Teal Trot annual charity walk at Chastain Park. We are entering a new era of male luxury, some might say. In the two years of on-and-off isolation and social distancing, some men are finding ways to reimagine their free time from the comfort of their homes, rather than in a bar, gym, or concert hall. Men are finding spaces in homes for hobbies or activities in upscaled ways. For instance, Tori Ashmore says that Vivace Designs built a “hidden closet for our client’s gun safe and tools” inside of a music room. “Basements are trendy right now,” says Tori, owner of Vivace Designs. “We’ve seen a lot more people interested in their basements and how they can provide additional entertainment space within their homes in the last couple of years.” And it’s not too surprising when you think about it. Fitness centers and gyms have long been integrating entertainment into workout environments. Ryan Williams, the owner of Artisan Design Studio, recalls her mindset during a recent basement remodel. “I tend to love more masculine spaces, so it

definitely leans that direction.” But, she says, this newly upgraded hangout spot is for everyone in the house to use. “The whole family will definitely enjoy this space,” Ryan says. “The ‘kids’ are high school and college-aged, so we wanted it to be a space they could enjoy with their friends, but that their parents could use to entertain adults as well.” Ashmore echoes this sentiment. “[Vivace Design] recently completed an extensive basement renovation. The clients wanted a space where they could entertain and have their kids bring friends over and not be in the way of everyone else.” She adds that they wanted to create something that catered to all parties individually while staying appealing to everyone. “Our favorite was probably the music room, which was definitely inspired by the husband’s college rock band days. But it was designed with the wife in mind as well.” She explains, “It’s masculine, but warm and comfy. We made sure that the space had plenty of soft furnishings to soften some of the harder elements like the plaster fireplace.” Long live the man cave! Adam Awtrey is the owner and artistic director at Salon Arcaro and single dad to four kids, Sophia, Andrew, Austin and Selina. We (barely) caught up with him to ask how in the world he squeezes so much into his days. Hold on tight, here we go… 6:00 a.m. - Up and at ‘em. Adam and the kids rise and shine early. 6:30 a.m. - Sophia feeds the dogs on weekdays and Adam handles the duty on weekends. The kids make their own breakfast most weekdays, with Adam as short order cook for bacon, biscuits and eggs to order on weekends for the kids and any overnight friends. While Adam works at the salon six and sometimes seven days a week, carving out this time is a priority. 10:00 a.m. - Sunday and Monday are meal prep days for Adam. He usually prepares three or four items for snacking

and two or three dinners. “We get a dinner at least once a week out, like Marlow’s,” says Adam. 3:30 p.m. - After school, the kids have tutors and Austin is getting ready for college prep, studying for the SAT and the ACT. Sophia is a manager for the wrestling team at Lassiter and she also does all the filming for all Lassiter lacrosse, which is boys and girls JV and varsity. Adam’s oldest daughter Selina is working at a law firm. 6:30 p.m. - Andrew has games Monday and Thursday, so dinner is often a la carte at home, followed by homework. 10:00 p.m. - Lights out. Sleep is nectar. Adam says, “I am very proud of all my children, how much they do for me and how much they do for themselves. As a salon owner with 10 stylists plus nine assistants, they all make it happen.”

When actor Chris Lowell turned 18, his dad, David Lowell handed him a stack of papers. David, the front man for the popular north Atlanta band, Better Than The Beatles had asked friends, relatives and neighbors to write down their nuggets of advice for his son heading off to college. “It was, by far, the best gift I’ve ever received. Just spectacular and unexpected,” says Chris, now a father living in New York with his wife, actor Kerry Bishé. He still has all the notes in a file folder marked with his dad’s name, along with memorabilia from the many bands David has played in over the years. “I have this great voicemail saved on my phone from pop calling on the way home from a gig saying, ‘that’s it, I am officially retiring from the band.’” During the dark days of the pandemic, David and his friends got the band back together and would play concerts from his home in Roswell that overlooks the Chattahoochee River. One of David’s neighbors heard the band and happens to own Lucky’s Burgers in Roswell. Ernie and Diane Geyer became great fans and asked David if the band would be willing to play at Lucky’s. Now Better Than The Beatles plays there regularly as well as other live music venues and bars around the Roswell area. Find them at Joe’s Sport Bar on June 10, Billy Allen’s on June 11 and Houck’s Grille on June 25. Growing up, Chris and his brother Andrew would hang out back stage at gigs. “I remember hearing dad’s band play at Jerry Farber’s club in Buckhead. Pop is a magnetic front man. It is fun to watch him rile up the crowd,” says Chris. During the past year his cousin, Ashley Zimmerman, joined the band, “It’s a family affair now. Ashley always had an exceptional voice and is a great musician and it’s a blast seeing them perform together.”

The brothers would also tag along with their dad on jobs at The Tabernacle, Fox Theater and Music Midtown where David’s business, Seriously Sound produced concerts and events. Huge speaker cabinets, mixing consoles and lighting trusses were the boys’ playground. Chris, who grew up in Roswell and Brookhaven, got his start on television in Private Practice, a Shonda Rhimes production. His career rocketed into high gear with his role in The Help, alongside another cast of strong female characters (on and off screen). In his most recent role, he plays opposite Alison Brie in Roar, by the creators of Glow, where he met Brie. “It’s a series of eight standalone feminist fables,” says Chris. “I’ve worked with women most of my career and love a set run by women. It’s more collaborative and puts me at ease. I’m a big advocate.” Chris is also featured in the Netf lix docudrama Inventing Anna. Off set, Chris is a photographer and his work is at Jackson Fine Art in Buckhead. “They really jump-started my photography career and I love the people there. I really enjoy coming to Georgia as often as possible, going out to eat and keeping a low profile.” Many of his actor friends and crew have moved here, giving up homes in LA and New York. “The quality of living here is better and there’s plenty of work. It’s amazing how the industry has embedded itself in the state,” says Chris. Kerry shot in Atlanta for four years for the television series, Halt and Catch Fire, so the couple had the chance to spend time with family. His family members include his mom Sue, stepdad Danny Lipson, his two sisters Michelle and Mimi and his stepmother Marjorie and his brothers Andrew, Michael and his sister Lucy. CONTINUED >

Whenever they gather, Chris says the family always befriends wait staff and hosts at restaurants. “Dad always makes a point of learning their names and honoring those in the service industry,” says Chris. “That has stuck with me. Now, in our neighborhood, people know us and our daughter and that feeling of community is very important to us.” Perhaps it’s the poignancy of parenthood. “Time moves much faster now. I had no idea how much I was going to

enjoy parenthood. I feel like I had been swimming in a pool and now I’m in the ocean.” Chris and Andrew will celebrate Father’s Day with their Dad in Boston, meeting for dinner in Little Italy and attending the Paul McCartney concert at Fenway Park. “It was a father-of-the year moment when I bought the tickets a few years ago,” says David. Undoubtedly, they will make new friends and pocket new stories along the way.

Since 1989, George and Toni Ippolito have enjoyed great success in bringing their family’s recipes to the Atlanta suburbs at Ippolito’s. During the past 20-plus years, Brandon Ippolito has grown up in the family business. Today, he’s cultivating a passion for great Italian food while welcoming family and friends to gather on Canton Street and downtown Woodstock at his dynamic concept, Ipp’s Pastaria & Bar.

In the Ippolito family, making meatballs is a very social affair. The more kids you can round up for the rolling the better, since a child’s palm makes the perfect-size meat ball. Traditionally, meatballs shouldn’t be overworked. To give these meatballs a flavor boost and make them super tender, the family soaks the breadcrumbs in cream and adds a good helping of Pecorino Romano cheese for some added zip. The Ippolito family has helped set a standard for what a classic Italian restaurant looks like, and now Brandon is redefining that platform with a cutting-edge wine list, incredible hospitality, and chef-driven seasonal features in a lively neighborhood atmosphere where you can let loose and stay awhile. GRANDPA’S MEATBALLS • Two parts 81/19 ground beef • 1 part ground veal • Kosher salt • Black pepper • Parsley • Bread crumbs • Egg (1 per pound of ground meat) • Pecorino Romano cheese (use the best and don’t skimp) • Heavy cream Step one In a large bowl combine the ground beef and ground veal with kosher salt. Mix thoroughly with your hands, then set aside at room temperature for 30 minutes. Step two Mix bread crumbs and heavy cream. Step three Add all other ingredients and mix until all is combined, without over mixing. Form 4 ounce meatballs and sauté in large skillet with olive oil. Sauté on all sides until golden brown. Add preferred red sauce and simmer for 30 minutes.

There are 24 hours in the day, and Joseph Alonso makes the most of every one. Whether with his family, at work practicing law, or volunteering his time and talent to the community, he is present and passionate about what that moment holds. And he feels blessed that life holds a lot right now. Family first is the mantra to which Joseph and his wife, Alisa, actively subscribe. Ask them what they do together with their three daughters, Lilly Claire, Charlotte and Isabelle, and you will hear an account that sounds like the curriculum for a wonderful arts and humanities academy. Joseph and Alisa strive to provide their family with enrichment beyond what they learn in school. Life experiences that involve theater, art and music are all engrained in the Alonso family’s daily life. Joseph’s philosophy of encouraging his children to follow their passions has led to a busy and varied schedule of activities. He says, “We cook together, have dance parties, play instruments and make up songs. We spend time outdoors canoeing and fishing, versus sitting in front of the television.” Daughter Lilly Claire takes boxing lessons, is a member of the Senior Troupe at Off-Broadway Children’s Theater and will attend Blessed Trinity High School next year. Charlotte and Isabelle are in training at the Tolbert Yilmaz School of Dance and recently performed in “The Nutcracker” and “Aladdin.” The Alonso’s interests extend far beyond their family and into to their community by giving back. Joseph has lived in Roswell since 1991 and seen the city grow into a diverse area with an incredible global population, which he considers as bringing with it all the opportunities for enrichment. He says, “I believe in my heart that if you want to see a community thrive and offer a rich live-work-play experience, you have to be an active participant in that realization and success.” This year, he is board chair for the Children’s Development Academy (CDA), a non-profit organization in Roswell that provides affordable early learning programs and childcare for preschool children. Professionally, Joseph is a Partner and member of the Executive Committee at GDCR Law, leading the firm’s national practice in the securities industry, trade secret and technology litigation. Having successfully practiced law for nearly 20 years, he is sought after and gives his time to professional organizations mentoring others in the field where he finds fulfillment. He is a Governor appointee to the Board of Directors for the Georgia Humanities Council, and a graduate of Leadership at North Fulton and the Young Lawyers Division Leadership Academy. Joseph says about his philanthropic endeavors, “I feel as if I get so much more than I give by doing this work.” He was first drawn to this purpose by a friend who recommended that Joseph volunteer at a local shelter. “It was humbling and enlightening. It was a deep reminder about how much gratitude I have for my circumstances and that I actually have something to give when helping others.” A day in the life of Joseph Alonso is a full one, rich with the people and experiences that inspire him. How about one more interesting tidbit? The Alonso family pandemic project became ALONSO - Hot Sauce for a Cause. “We were bored and stressed out during COVID,” says Joseph, “So we started a hot sauce company that donates 30% of its profits to non-profit organizations. THE LOONEYS AT HOME WITH W hen Jennifer and Mike Looney relocated to Roswell, the timing might have made others ner vous. But, the newly weds rose to the occasion and now have a beautiful home full of meaningful touches and comfortable design. Jennifer and her husband, Dr. Mike Looney, Superintendent of Fulton County Schools, was thrown into the COVID-19 chaos soon after he assumed his position of overseeing the education and well-being of more than 90,000 students and 14,000 faculty and staff members. “I was still living in Tennessee for two years and Mike bought the house right before COVID shut everything down, so that he could have a home base. Now that the housing market has gone insane, we are just biding our time to find our ideal home. I have two storage units of furniture waiting,” says Jennifer. Together, Jennifer and Mike constructed the porch swing during COVID as a fun project. “Everything about it is custom. We painted it blue to match the front door and then I had my workroom make the cushions and pillows from the fabrics that I selected,” says Jennifer, a 22-year veteran of the design

industry, and owner/designer of JLS Designs. She offers comprehensive services, from initial design and consultation, to the final installation. Her inspiring work can be found in homes for Fortune 500 executives, music and sports professionals and hundreds of families in the Nashville area. In 2021, she expanded her business to serve the greater Atlanta area. A lthough Jennifer has her eyes set on a more permanent dwelling in the area, she’s enjoyed decorating the home and enjoys entertaining. Next to the pool table is another bespoke piece. “I have a dear friend in Knoxville that is an artist and he did the flag for me. He customized it to add the words for my husband since he is a retired Marine. The artist’s name is Mark Carson English - find him on Instagram!” “The previous owners did some additional work to make our home a perfect entertainment house. They left the pool table for us to use and we have been practicing our pool skills! It’s the perfect spot for FUN! Seeing how we are newlyweds and now live in the same state and home, we have done a good job of blending our lives.”
