L I S A T H I B A U LT , P U B L I S H E R @CITYLIFESTYLEROSWELL For thousands of Boulder County residents, darkness was felt with unrelenting force on December 30th. The Marshall Fire unleashed devastation, but the resolve of our community proved to be far too strong for defeat. From the immediate response by neighbors calling neighbors, making sure they were out of their homes, to the firefighters who risked their lives, all the way to the local, state, and federal government agencies—it was truly incredible how quickly everyone mobilized. There are so many heroes who have emerged, many we will know, and many we will never know. Yet, while our country may be divided on many topics, the response to these recent events proves that the community of Boulder County is stronger than ever. My biggest takeaway from this experience is that no matter what your political stance, what car you drive, or what school your kids go to, or if you compost or not, there is still an immense amount of love in humankind. I trust that this wave of goodwill we are riding can continue long after the rubble is removed and new foundations are poured. With all of our love and gratitude, Andy Manz

The NEW Basement CHIC, FUNCTIONAL AND READY-TO-ENTERTAIN

ARTICLE BY STACY CONDE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DESIGNERS The trend for basements in 2022 is chic, functional and ready-to-entertain. Mainly confined to our homes for the past two years, we’ve expanded to envelope all available space in comfort and utility. Hidden away like a personal speakeasy, it’s an opportunity to let design ideas run wild. Whether it’s inspiration from a pub, hotel lobby or part-time hobby, a basement can provide a respite from the everyday life that goes on upstairs. “In the past few years, we’ve seen a lot more people interested in their basements and how they can provide additional entertainment space within their homes,” says Vivace Design & Build’s Tori Ashmore. “We recently completed an extensive basement renovation for clients who had college-aged kids and liked to host get-togethers on the weekends.

Ranney Blair Ranney Blair

They wanted a space where they could entertain and have their kids bring friends over and not be in the way of everyone else. It was a great opportunity for us to create a space really catered to their specific wants and needs.” Creating something unique to each client and their space allows the client’s personality to flow through the design and it also makes the job a lot of fun. “This basement is a perfect example,” says Tori. “You always hear about she-sheds and man caves, and while there were certainly aspects of this project that catered more to the wife or to the husband, we really wanted the entire space to feel cohesive. We had fun with different individual aspects of the design that highlighted one or the other, but ultimately fit together to form one holistic design. Our favorite example of that was the music room, which

was inspired by the husband’s college rock band days. It’s masculine, but also warm and comfy. We made sure that the space had plenty of soft furnishings to soften some of the harder elements like the plaster fireplace. They paired together well to create an awesome entertainment space.” Ranney Blair’s Peter Ranney has seen an increase in clients with extravagant design concepts for basement remodel projects. “We are working on a basement for clients who want it to feel like they are in an Irish pub!” Peter describes, “This project includes a full bar with custom wood paneling and trim, and a walk-in stone temp-controlled wine cellar. For another project, the client wanted their basement to feel like a high-end, hotel lobby. This one incorporates a custom upholstered banquette, coffered ceilings, trim accent walls and much more.” CONTINUED >

To combat the lack of natural light, Peter suggests ways to make a basement space more inviting. “We like to be purposeful with our lighting design by incorporating different layers of light such as ambient, task, and accent lighting. We also encourage our clients to go with a lighter paint color to help balance this.” “With any basement project, it’s also important to consider longevity and durability in the design process,” says Peter. “Moisture control, appropriate insulation, and additional HVAC units can help to make sure the space not only looks good, but also provides a comfortable environment to enjoy in whatever capacity and design style you choose!” Vivace Design & Build 770.299.1701 VivaceDesignBuild.com Ranney Blair 404.308.3305 RanneyBlair.com 62 Screws 914.643.0704 62Screws.com

FROM ITALY, WITH LOVE ARTICLE BY NANCY FLAHERTY PHOTOGRAPHY BY WAYNE ALBRIGHT

Longtime Roswell resident Cathy Jones enjoys bringing a molto bene taste of Italy to her daily meal planning. Cathy, having quite a comfort level in science with a background in chemistry and pharmaceutical sales, put a bucket list together of things she wanted to accomplish as she approached retirement. Near the top of her list was learning to cook Italian food in Italy! She discovered “Good Tastes of Tuscany” in Lastra a Signa about seven miles west of Florence. Classes were held in a 13th-century castle and lodging was just up the hill in Villa Bellavista, a 14th century farmhouse in the middle of an oil grove with a beautiful view. “Villa Pandolfini was the estate where the cooking school was located and was still a producer of olive oil and wine for

30

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

the local area. We used both products in our cooking and were immediately spoiled by the freshness and quality of the olive oil and the amazing local organic wine.” Cathy credits her frugal Scottish grandmother, who was a cook in a logging camp herself, with instilling the love of creating meals and satisfying large groups of people on a strict budget. But unlike her grandmother, Cathy’s tip for creating a meal to remember is to use the best ingredients you can find at your most comfortable price point. The ingredients are the most important factor in creating mouthwatering dishes that satisfy anyone’s palate. A member of the Roswell Woman’s Club since 2015, Cathy is a very active supporter of the Roswell community within an organization that requires hands-on involvement, volunteerism in the community and monetary contributions through fundraising. All of the money raised at the club’s events goes to pay for scholarships to deserving North Fulton high school students and a variety of non-profit organizations hand picked by the board of the club. Fundraising events sponsored by the Woman’s Club are often considered a must-do in the Roswell community and tickets often sell out quickly. “At the June 2021 fund raising event, Boots and Bling, I offered at auction a five course Italian dinner for eight. The winning four couples paid $2,000.00 for my dinner. We held the dinner in early November and it was a great success,” Cathy says. The menu for the dinner began with parmesan flan with cherry tomato sauce. For the salad course, Sicilian blood orange salad with shaved fennel, Kalamata olives and fresh oregano dressed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar was served. The entree was a Scottiglia, a hunter’s stew made with a variety of meat, braised in wine and served over creamy polenta. And finally, for dessert, vanilla bean panna cotta, served with a fresh fruit sauce completed the meal. The lucky participants went home with a bottle of her homemade Meyer lemon limoncello - a gift to be treasured! Contact the Roswell Woman’s Club if you would like information about their next fundraiser. Who knows, you might just win a dinner with Cathy and her incredible cooking! “Backyarding” – the trend to move indoor activities outdoors that was made popular during the pandemic – is here to stay, according to the TurfMutt Foundation, an environmental education and stewardship program that encourages outdoor living and caring for green spaces. More now than ever, outdoor space has become an extension of the four walls of our home and the line between indoor and outdoor living is fluid. We work, cook, exercise, and even enjoy mini stay-cations in our yard. Mark Galey, President, MCR, CRPM at Master Home Remodelers, Inc. knows a thing or two about important maintenance, new renovations, and updates that will keep things in top “backyarding” shape. Mark says, “As the days start getting longer, you know spring is just around the corner, and summer is not far behind — making now the ideal time to transform your outdoors.” Mark and the team design and build functional outdoor spaces, which serve as a welcome extension of a home’s interior. There is an endless list of configurations to consider when designing the authentic outdoor experience. Locally hand-crafted wood swings from Georgia Swings, Carpenter James or Vintage Porch Swings provide a cozy spot for an afternoon snooze or getting lost in a good book. The Talenti Cleo Teak Swing Armchair from AuthenTeak features a base made from powder-coated aluminum and durable teak wood with quick-dry cushions and removable, water-resistant cushion covers. Take it a step further and you could relax up high, surrounded by a canopy of leaves, with a Firefly Fort treehouse. Mike and Kristin Scaglione moved to the Alpharetta area from Tampa in 2018. “Firefly Forts was born out of the desire to create a place for our children to call their own. We wanted a place that would grow with our children...that would be equally as desirable to a 5-year-old

«

as it would be to a 15-year-old...or even a 50-year-old,” says Kristin. Decorating is fun, but don’t forget that maintenance is important too. Just because it’s outside, doesn’t mean that it’s impervious to the elements. If you find you’re getting too much sun, consider an Apollo Louvered Opening Roof System for your deck. “Direct sunlight is especially damaging to painted surfaces, wood, and concrete,” Mark Galey explains. “Louvered roofs help prolong your deck or patio’s lifespan by providing shade, at the same time, providing protection for your outdoor items, including outdoor cooking elements, furniture, and other items from direct exposure to the elements.” As the home office turns to the outdoors and al fresco dining becomes the norm, having the option to employ shade at a moment’s notice is key. Grills, pizza ovens and overhead lighting with seating make many homes outdoor eateries for families and neighbors. A louvered roof, pergola, shade sails and landscaping are design choices that can help enhance and provide shade for outdoor dining and workspaces. Do you prefer a dense jungle scape, a minimalist Zen garden or a Southwestern cactus vibe? Find your backyard personality and create your own outdoor rumpus room. Houseplants: the perfect roommates

No matter how you look at it, houseplants improve our lives in many ways. Indoor gardens provide us an alternative way to commune with nature.

ARTICLE BY SE AN O' KE E FE

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H OME + DE S I GN

The ubiquitous houseplant has long been a cautious curiosity for many. Comments such as, “I don’t have a green thumb,” or “I can’t keep anything alive,” have echoed through the rooms and hallways of almost every dorm and home in America. Well, it’s time to dispel all the mistruths about whether houseplants are beneficial and to lay the foundation for a little oasis of green happiness in the corner of every home! By the way, you don’t really need a green thumb as there are plenty of hard-to-kill houseplants that can survive any level of neglect! And remember not only do houseplants look pretty, they also decrease stress and anxiety, increase happiness, and bring a sense of joy and relaxation to every room. Houseplants make us feel better about ourselves in many ways because they allow us to care for them and we reap the rewards of that love. No one is alone when you have a houseplant, as they are our forever listeners. Yes, some people actually do talk with their houseplants all day long! There are many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment. Aside from reducing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity in the home, house plants have been shown to reduce mental fatigue, accelerate the healing process, as well as improve productivity and focus. Pothos, spider plants, lady palms, yucca, and succulents are so pretty and easy to grow. It is no wonder that we have seen a revival of indoor gardening trends. Instagram is teeming with photos of incredible indoor “living green” vignettes that show us all how clever we can be when decorating with house plants! All you really need is to a pick a place in the home that has the best light and pick your plants. Think outside of the box when it comes to decorating with houseplants. Look for underused spaces. Use mixed and matched pots of different sizes and shapes. Turn a shelf into a plant display. Go vertical with some hanging plants or an antique ladder. You can even group some of your favorite plants together into a single large decorative pot. Signature large plant displays anchor the most well-designed rooms in America and it’s all there for us to look at, learn from, and bring into our own home. Whether combined into a single large decorative pot or clustered together in a corner, always remember the key to any house plant décor is to have a thriller, a tall plant usually with a strong color and form; filler plants that literally will fill the pot covering all the soil; and a spiller plant that trails over the edge of the pot. Try any combination of your favorite plants or a tried and true combination of a fiddle-leaf fig, a prayer plant, and a string of pearls. CONTINUED >

DON’T FALL SHORT ON ANOTHER RESOLUTION!

Update Your Estate Plan

It’s February 2022. If you’re putting off making a Will or Trust for another year, it’s time to get your butt in gear. You’re not getting any younger - none of us are. You need to plan ahead to avoid a disaster. My 31-year-old friend thought that he could put off estate planning. He was young, smart, and extremely healthy. Unfortunately, one day he was killed on his way to work. A relatively minor crash left his 2 toddler sons without a father, and their mother with most of their assets frozen & stuck in Probate Court. With just a little planning, he could have left his family in a much better position, without subjecting them to months of court and thousands of dollars in attorneys’ fees. Start this year off right by taking control and planning for the future. I promise that you’ll be glad you did.

The ABCs of

Giving Sunshine on a Ranney Day's big reveal at The Cottage School 46

EDU CAT ION C OR N E R | ARTS + CULTURE

“Where can we begin? From the moment this project concept was initiated, to the final touches on the construction, Sunshine On A Ranney Day (SOARD) and their entire team of professionals made this experience a joy. From the extraordinary lengths their team went through to acquire materials, to working through the holidays and working around staff - their commitment has been nothing short of amazing.” Speaking for the students, parents, staff and many partners at The Cottage School, development director, Kim Weber says a mere thank you is inadequate for the renovation and design and construction project donated by Sunshine On a Ranney Day. Holly Ranney, Co-Founder & President at Sunshine on a Ranney Day was equally as thrilled with the partnership. “In 2017 SOARD completed our first special community project outside of our residential makeovers. We wanted to help our community on a larger scale. Our first special community project was to makeover the parent sleep rooms in Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Egleston. Since then we have completed one each year.” “SOARD’s generosity with this project is simply overwhelming. The lobby is the first stop for prospective students and their families who are seeking a new school home,” says Kim. “TCS offers a soft place to land after many of our families have struggled to find the right educational fit for their student. This project has created a warm welcome beyond our wildest dreams.” Sue Collins: What are a few of your favorite aspects of the reno? Kim Weber: It is almost impossible to pick, there is not one single piece we don’t LOVE! It is truly a custom design - totally unique like our kids. This project contains a variety of extraordinary features, from beautiful flooring to handcrafted and specially curated furniture and lighting. Not to mention a breathtaking feature mural by artist Andy Burt, The Wall Nut, which captures the spirit of The Cottage School mission. First impressions are always important. “Our administration lobby is the first stop for prospective students, and with this renovation the first impression just blows you away! It’s a welcoming, cheerful place to begin their journey,” says Dr. Steven Palmer, Head of School, The Cottage School. “Working with Sunshine On A Ranney Day has been so impactful. Each member of their team is an inspiration,

“Working with Sunshine On A Ranney Day has been so impactful. Each member of their team is an inspiration, leading by example, and giving back to the community.”

leading by example, and giving back to the community.” SC: What will students notice first? KW: There is a sense of light, warmth and welcome when you enter the reception area. As our students come through to meet with counselors, they will be embraced by the calm feeling of the space. A fan favorite is sure to be the wall mural, it beautifully and artfully captures the spirit of TCS. For first-time visitors to campus, when first impressions are so important by setting the tone for a positive experience, guests will feel embraced by the warmth of the space. The Cottage School has been a “home away from home” learning environment since 1985, and has grown to meet the needs of our students. This project enhances that “welcome home” feeling. SC: What will teachers appreciate most? KW: Our teachers work very hard every day on behalf of our students and take pride in our beautiful 23-acre campus. The teachers will love the haven that this space

48

has become. It will provide a wonderful respite during their planning period or at the end of a long day. Not to mention, they love coffee! The coffee bar will surely be appreciated by staff everyday! SC: This project seems to be the beginning of a lifelong partnership of two nonprofits dedicated to serving children with special needs! KW: It’s a long answer but words cannot begin to express our appreciation. Our hope is that our actions will. We will continue to partner with SOARD to make the dreams of deserving children come true. Thank you, Sunshine On A Ranney Day, for so much more than just a renovation! SC: So, this project grew from a visit to your Sunny & Ranney shop by a few staffers from The Cottage School. Holly Ranney: We started talking and they were saying they wanted to update their lobby furniture and wanted to purchase it all from our store. As we talked more, I was intrigued to go there to see their space. As soon as I saw it, I knew that this could be our 2021 special community project.

What a perfect partnership, since both organizations help children with special needs. We knew that we had amazing designers and sponsors that would love to help. I immediately called Jennifer Crosby with Crosby Design Group and she jumped on to help make their lobby what it is now. SC: It’s all about the partnerships. HR: We are so blessed to have amazing talent to help Sunshine on a Ranney Day. Andy Burt, The Wall Nut, has been doing murals with our charity for almost 10 years, so we knew we needed to have a customized mural. Our long-term sponsor, Real Floors Commercial, did not blink at the opportunity to install new Shaw Flooring, in fact, they ended up going above and beyond to help The Cottage School! Reliable Heating & Air has also been with our charity for almost 10 years and when we call to ask them if they can help, their guys show up ready. It’s amazing how many great companies are out there that share our passion toward helping kids. SunshineOnARanneyDay.com CottageSchool.org

LOVING LIGHTING

“Lighting is the jewelry to a house and a place to really make a statement. It is such an impactful, essential piece of a home that should not be overlooked.” Kimberly Haire of House of Haires Design believes this with every fiber of her being. She turns to the diamond merchants of lighting at Mudi Lighting where Brooke and Fungai Mudi create lighting solutions around an interior designer’s or client’s needs and dreams. Mudi specializes in electrical installation for recessed lights, pendant lights, outlets, and ceiling fans. Together, they think about how a room will be used, favorite shapes and finishes, natural lighting sources already in play and, CONTINUED > of course, budget.

For Kim Haire, it’s also about scale. “In a foyer, I love large scale and open sight lines. Bigger is always better,” she says. “In a bathroom, I love to elevate a space with beautiful sconces and a large chandelier. In a kitchen, I love incorporating sconce lighting and unexpected island lighting that will draw the eye in.” And, while homeowners believe in the power of the pendant, too often pendants are too small in scale or lost in design, warns Kim. “But the right light selections can bring a space to the next level.” This time of year, Mudi is busy with kitchen and basement renovations including kitchenettes and continuing enthusiasm for the installation of smart technology switches. “Bosch’s new VisiMax Red Beam is a newer tool Mudi’s install crew will enjoy, using a laser for marking lines in the process of placing recessed lights,” explains Brooke. In a lofty family room, like this one designed by Huff Harrington Home, lamps serve as sculptural accents against a quiet backdrop of neutral furnishings. The organic shape of the gold-leaf-gilded lamps mirrors bold, dark brush strokes in the large abstract painting by Charles Ross through Huff Harrington Art. For a tall-ceilinged family room where the scale was of utmost importance, a pair of black resin and brass floor lamps fill the visual space perfectly. Oversized shades sit on spikey frames that add architectural impact. “We wanted a dramatically shaped lamp that could stand on its own, but not compete with the other design elements going on in the room,” says Wren Caples, lead designer on the project. SUPPORTING OUR FOSTER FAMILIES ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY WAYNE ALBRIGHT

Rachel M. Ewald is Executive Director of the Foster Care Support Foundation in Roswell. As of 2021, over 15,000 children in Georgia are placed in foster care, not including hundreds of thousands of children being raised by thousands of grandparents or relatives. SGC: Your agency provides support for fostering families and kids, both in base foster homes and in grands raising grands and relative care homes. How can our readers help most this year? RE: Since 2020, the Foster Care Support center (FosterCares) has gone from the support of 15,000 volunteers to between 4,000 and 5,000 and two-thirds of our regular staff. Although we continue to serve the children, most of the weekday corporate volunteers remain working from home so they have not resumed volunteering as team-building opportunities. Volunteers are needed Tuesdays through Fridays, 9:30 to 5:00. We are also hiring at our charity shop on the corner of Holcomb Bridge Rd and at our distribution center/warehouse, both in Roswell. We are looking for 2000 individuals to become a child sponsor to donate $25 per month to maintain the level of financial support needed to continue to serve children. SGC: The mentoring program is also a beautiful idea. RE: Mentors of the H4T Program are leaders who wish to provide a positive example through support and guidance to a youth residing in foster care, a group home, or relative

care. Mentors must commit to spending a minimum of four hours each month in person with the mentee for a minimum of 12 months. What makes a good mentor? Someone who can be a friend, listen well and observe needs for a healthy relationship. These children are rarely heard and having a listening ear may be rare for them. A good mentor knows not to judge, but can help guide gently and consistently to ensure a better future as the teen ages toward adulthood. SGC: Many of our readers are at the helm of corporations and large companies. How does sponsorship work, what levels and what makes a good sponsor partnership? RE: Financial sponsors are always needed since we are a unique nonprofit that does not ask for, nor receive government funding from state or federal levels. There is no other like this in the country and we have just finished our 21st year after incorporation. We are proud of our corporate, faith-based groups and individuals who have allowed us to provide for more than 70,000 children. Sponsorship levels can be found on our website and can be emailed to interested parties upon request. Without our community partners from across the state and country, these children may not have had the basic care items that our children enjoy every day. We are very proud of our communities who have supported the FosterCares programs and help us continue to provide for so many needs. FosterCares.org

TAKE A MOMENT REVIEWING INSURANCE POLICIES SHOULDN'T BE A HASSLE We asked Torrence McKnight, State Farm to give us a 101 on keeping safe. RCL: When is a good time to review your insurance policies? TM: Review your insurance policies every 6 or 12 months at minimum. This is to ensure you are addressing any life changes (i.e., marriage, divorce, birth of child, new youth drivers) that arise. RCL: What makes your agency different? TM: Our agency is a part of a great company and agents who take pride in offering exceptional products and services to eligible customers. What makes our agency different is our team's ability to provide prompt and accurate service to customer needs, to be here for our customers 24/7 between our local office and our Customer Care Center, the periodic check-ins to stay aware of any life changes and needs a customer may have, the ability to explain and make processes simple for our customers and to demonstrate to our customers the importance of being able to access and control your account at any time using our mobile app tool and StateFarm.com. RCL: What would you like to recommend that homeowners consider when insuring their homes? TM: It is imperative that you truly understand what the Estimated Replacement Cost (ERC) is for your home. Understanding your ERC and ensuring your agent has the accurate and updated information that helps make up the ERC will ensure your home is adequately insured at that time. As insurance agents, we are your risk managers, let us help you manage those risks. RCL: What are some auto discounts/savings you offer for teen drivers? TM: Having a teen driver in your home can sometimes have mixed emotions for many families. In an effort to help families save, eligible customers may qualify for our Good Student Discount (GSD), Steer Clear Discount (SCD), Student Away at School Discount (SASD), Defensive Driving Discount (DDD), Drive Safe & Save (DSS) and Driver Training Discount (DTD), to name a few. For more information about our auto discounts visit StateFarm.com/ insurance/auto/discounts or contact Torrence McKnight State Farm at 678.249.3484. RCL: How can prospective customers find your agency? TM: We welcome all prospective customers to visit our website at TorrenceMcKnight.com and it will list all our contact information. Torrence A. McKnight, Agent 11660 Alpharetta Highway, Suite 250, Roswell 678.249.3484 Torrence.McKnight.Vabynr@statefarm.com
