LIFESTYLE LETTER

Hello friends,

February 2022 PUBLISHER

Lisa Thibault | lisa.thibault@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Sue G. Collins | scollins@citylifestyle.com

Welcome to our February issue of Roswell City Lifestyle. We are thrilled to introduce you to Marty Kove, a star of Cobra Kai who has made the South his new home, leaving Hollywood and all its trappings behind. Our writer Sean O'Keefe invited him to dinner at Big Oak Tavern where they were treated to a curated fabulous meal from acclaimed chef, Nate Armstrong. Marty loves all things Southern and Sean did a wonderful job with the interview. We hope you like it. We loved having him in Roswell. Are you a coffee lover like me? There are two very special coffee shops you need to know about where you'll find more than caffeine and smiling faces. Check out the story on page 20 and discover how these coffee shops are inspiring others and changing lives. For those of you who love a good cigar, we spoke to Scott Bailey of The Cigar Merchant for his advice on how to best pair the perfect stogie with this month's featured spirits and sweets from 5/4 Meadery and Uncle Jacks on Canton Street on page 34. There's more love in our "Lovely Loos" story, where trends for tubs, huge showers and natural light are taking center stage this month. We talked with Panacea Plumbing and found out what trend is taking Europe by storm, now available here in Roswell, on page 24. You'll enjoy stories of finding love late in life and a special recipe for the perfect chocolate martini to toast with this month. No matter how you're celebrating Valentine's Day this month, we hope you'll take along YOUR magazine to continue to discover all that our community has to offer. Thanks for inviting us into your homes and we can't wait to see you around our town. Love local, spend locally and get out and enjoy Roswell,

FOR THE LOVE OF MONEY

Making sense of finances for couples

This month of love offers a perfect time to talk about money matters for couples. Whether you are a newlywed or married for 20 years, couples who share finances and manage their money wisely together, leverage an important skill. Here are my top 5 tips for honing this important accomplishment.

ARTICLE BY SHAWN MCCABE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

1. 2. 3.

SET FINANCIAL GOALS TOGETHER. Creating a vision on what you want your money future to look like is a important and powerful tool.

2. TRACK YOUR SPENDING AND REVIEW TOGETHER REGULARLY. This is not a finger pointing exercise, but an exercise of understanding. Where is the money is going? Where are areas we could save or cut back? My husband and I have found this exercise very eye opening. Most couples we have talked to have found the same. Everyone seems to find ways to “trim the fat” from their spending.

3. ONCE THE BILLS ARE PAID, ENSURE THAT EACH PERSON HAS A SPEND ACCOUNT THAT IS FOR NO-QUESTIONS-ASKED PURCHASES. Having transparency when it comes to money is important in a strong relationship, but it is also healthy to have funds set aside to spend freely.

4. 5.

February is Chapter Two of Twelve in the “Book of 2022”. If you are not already doing so, take the opportunity this month to begin working together as a couple on your finances. It can bond you in ways that you could not have imagined. It gets you working on your goals and the path to get there, ultimately making your vision together a reality. iThinkFi.org 800.873.5100

16

M ON E Y M AT T E R S | FINANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

4. COMMUNICATE. Find time where you are relaxed to talk through your financial situation and vision. Finances can affect so many aspects of our lives. It is an important topic to talk about regularly as a couple.

5. TALK WITH OTHER COUPLES ABOUT THEIR OWN FINANCIAL JOURNEY. This can be a great exercise to learn new things and share ideas. Everyone has such a unique financial journey and the sharing of best practices or struggles can be very helpful. My husband and I have made it into a fun contest with other couples called “Frugal Olympics”. It gets pretty silly at times but it keeps reasonable spending and cost-cutting top of mind without being drudgery. Plus, it keeps the sharing of ideas and encouragement flowing!

COFFEE, SERVED WITH LOVE In Georgia, 70 percent of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are unemployed. Meanwhile, North Fulton’s first nonprofit café, Brewable, is striving to change that — fully staffed by adults with IDD and funded entirely by your support. At Brewable, individuals can brew confidence with meaningful paid employment and find their place in a society that often neglects to meet them halfway. Along with real-world skills training and biweekly paychecks, employees a.k.a. “Brewistas” gain a sense of purpose and belonging in our community. For everyone involved, the greatest value comes in the form of shared smiles and casual conversations across the counter. Some "Brewistas" will apply their experience to find employment elsewhere, but many will remain at the café for the duration of their career. They cannot rely solely on in-store sales to fund daily operations and payroll, but instead depend on the generosity of neighbors like you. Donations of any size will directly support Brewable’s mission to employ, enrich, and enable Brewistas to achieve long-term success. Alpharetta Community Center, BrewableCafe.com

SHINING AT RISE When Nicole DeWard launched Shine Health & Wellness in 2013 offering personal training, nutrition coaching and therapy of all kinds, she couldn’t have dreamed that her daughter would someday be working next door. In a coffee shop. That was opened by Nicole and other moms for their kids. "I couldn't be more honored and thrilled to bring this amazing place to our community. The vision God put on my heart to give people with special needs a bigger place to SHINE their light in the world started when my daughter, Bekah, was about 14,” says Nicole. “Where could an overly loving girl, with Down Syndrome, who knows no strangers, find purpose and value in the workplace that was a safe place for her? I knew I couldn't be the only parent that felt that way... and now we have RISE.” New on the menu this month at the cafe, find smashed avocado toast with eggs and mini banana breads. RISE is truly a place for community. The Special Friends Club meets at RISE on the third Friday of every month, for people with special needs offering a place to hang out, do karaoke, play games, make crafts and build relationships. 4651 Sandy Plains Rd #116, Roswell. “The secret is to combine sleek lines and very clean layouts with richer finishes that have more depth of color and texture.”

Bidets are all the rage in Europe and Japan. What do these cultures know that we Americans haven’t caught onto yet? I think that the concept of a bidet is a bit “foreign” to us here in the U.S. We are not very familiar with what a bidet is or why we would want one. The truth is that most people who try this hygienic solution prefer it to the use of toilet paper. The modern bidet is a plumbed bathroom fixture intended for improved hygiene. Many bidets provide new levels of comfort and cleanliness by incorporating features like soothing warm water wash with alternate angles, heated adjustable seats, warm air drying, deodorizer, automatic open/close, auto flush, and self-cleaning functions. The newest trend is to incorporate all these options into an electronic bidet seat, like the Toto Washlet, which can be installed onto the toilet that you already have. A bidet seat is a great way to upgrade your current fixture to a smart toilet without changing the footprint of your bathroom at all. The more luxurious Washlet seat models are even operated with a remote and incorporate memory to save user settings. While a Washlet seat is an obvious home upgrade, there are other great reasons to add a bidet to your bathroom setup. Waste prevention is a big one. Americans spend more money on toilet paper than any other nation. The wash and dry features of a Washlet seat actually clean better than paper, and with less friction and discomfort that can lead to other health concerns. The cleaning and automatic options also help those who would otherwise need assistance to have more privacy and autonomy in the bathroom. Other gorgeous trends in beautiful bathrooms are freestanding tubs (hello, bubble baths), oversized showers, architectural details, natural light and built-in storage. Mark Williams of Mark Williams Designs in Buckhead is all about the tub. "Ranging from the

most traditional, to sleek and modern, bathtubs come in all shapes and sizes to fit every environment. Loud jet tubs that are difficult to keep clean are a thing of the past, so keep it simple with a beautiful soaking tub," he says. Bathrooms need not be brightened by artificial light (which does no favors). "People want their bathrooms to be filled with natural light so whenever we are building from scratch or renovating, there is a much stronger desire than ever before to place primary bathrooms in eastern exposures to get the best morning light," says designer Lorraine Enwright of Intuitive Dwellings by Enwright Design. "This is healthy for you because that blue spectrum of light tells your brain to wake up and sets your daily rhythm." She also believes in rich hues and layers. "The secret is to combine sleek lines and very clean layouts with richer finishes that have more depth of color and texture." Designer Ryan Williams of Artisan Design Studio loves the oversized showers, using complementary tiles and fixtures to make the shower a showpiece. Stock it with all your favorite products, from head to toe and revel in the warmth.

Three winter skin concerns and how to soothe them ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

30

S KIN CA R E | BEAU TY

BE AU TIFU L Although we are not shoveling snow, even the cooler, dry winter weather here in Roswell can be tough on the skin. Here are three common skin conditions caused or worsened by the winter weather. Our friends at Live Oak Dermatology shared these tips.

ECZEMA (ATOPIC DERMATITIS) Eczema causes intermittent bouts of irritated itching skin. Winter weather is notorious for promoting dry skin that allows eczema to flourish. Moisturization is always important for preventing flares, but it is particularly vital during the winter months. Avoid scented creams, because eczema patients can often acquire allergies to the fragrance mix in these products. Check out Vanicream, without fragrances or preservatives.

CHAPPED LIPS (CHEILITIS) The dry, cold wind can compromise the skin barrier leading to irritation and painful fissures. In some cases, these cracks and splits can also become infected with bacteria or yeast, further complicating clearance. A common mistake is to lick the lips to replace the moisture. Unfortunately, while it may feel better in the short term, the enzymes in the saliva and the wet-dry cycle can greatly exacerbate the problem, rather than helping. Use a thick ointment such as Vaseline or Aquaphor to help restore the skin barrier and allow the skin to heal.

W INTER HAND DERMATITIS

Frequent hand washing required during flu season and Covid amplifies this effect resulting in painful/itching and cracked, red skin. Hand dermatitis can be improved with thick emollients and moisturizers. In some cases, prescription creams may be indicated to control the inflammation and restore the skin barrier, thus allowing the skin to do its job of keeping out irritants and keeping in moisture. Live Oak Dermatology was started by board-certified dermatologist Brent Thomas Goedjen. "As a small independent practice, we are proud of our ability to deliver personalized and attentive care to patients. We love being part of the Roswell community," says Brent. Live Oak Dermatology offers general dermatology for both adult and pediatric patients and have just introduced medical spa services such as facials, chemical peels and microneedling. “Smoking cigars is like falling in love. First, you are attracted by its shape; you stay for its flavor, and you must always remember never, never to let the flame go out!” —Winston Churchill During this month of love, we asked beloved Roswell purveyors of cigars, sweets, spirits and wine to play matchmaker. Scott Bailey, owner of The Cigar Merchant of Roswell is our expert on cigars and shares some of his favorites to pair. “In general, full-bodied cigars go with full-bodied spirits. Mild cigars with light-bodied spirits,” says Scott.

Pair with bourbon: Padron 1964 Anniversary Maduro $$$ My Father Le Bijou $$ CLE Corojo $ Woodford Reserve Double Oaked offers full body notes of vanilla and dark caramel, counterbalancing the sweetness of chocolate mousse in the S'mores Baked Alaska. However, the back notes of hazelnut and spices blend well with the charred marshmallow meringue in the dessert - a great trio along with a cigar. "The creamy finish of this bourbon finishes off the marriage with the dessert," says Eddie Elrod general manager at Uncle Jack's on Canton Street. The S'mores Baked Alaska at Uncle Jack's on Canton Street pairs beautifully with a cigar. It has a layer of graham cracker crumb with a scoop of rich chocolate mousse, covered in torched marshmallow meringue. "Port wine often has touches of cinnamon spice to the taste profile and pairs perfectly with chocolate," says Eddie. "The wood notes of the port with the notes of mature fruit tie together with the charred marshmallow meringue."

To pair with mead: Montecristo White Label $$$ Avo XO $$ When one imagines pairing a beverage to a fine cigar, bourbon whiskey almost certainly comes to mind. "Three or four ounces of an ambrosial liquid is the perfect partner for nearly any variety of cigar, whether claro or maduro, robusto or Churchill," says Sean Walcek, owner of 5/4 Meadery in Roswell. "However, there's another wonderful elixir whose full flavor stands up to the brashness of tobacco, yet is mellow enough not to overpower it. Surprisingly enough, it happens to be the world's oldest alcoholic beverage: Mead." Mind's Rye premium Mead from Roswell's family-owned 5/4 Meadery is barrel-aged in freshly decanted rye whiskey barrels and combines tannic notes with the pleasant essence of raw local Georgia honey, creating a perfect partner for sitting on the deck in your favorite chair enjoying a hand-rolled cigar. L ove L et ter to a M ac a ron Baker waxes poetic over her beloveds

My dear French macaron, Our love started off rocky. We first crossed paths in Paris in 2012, but I foolishly overlooked the depths of your complexity. I wouldn’t say it was love at first sight or even love at first bake. I found you unpredictable and very difficult to understand. After months of some successes and many failures together, I started to understand how you work, what you like, and what you don’t like. Even after every day together for over a year, I still learned new things about you that made me love you more and more. I devoted my food science master’s thesis to you! From the fact that you must be baked within a 5°F temperature range in the oven, to the fact that you’re extra sensitive when it’s humid outside…you truly are a diva and I love you for that. More than mastering your baking technique and the food science behind it, my favorite thing about you is the endless possibilities for decorating & filling you. I think you look particularly nice with metallic accents or a pearl luster; but designs such as woodland animals or holiday themes are just as beautiful on you. I never run out of inspiration with your designs, and I certainly will never get bored of all the flavors to try on you. You bring so much light into my life, as well as many others, by being your beautiful, complex, delicate, and sweet self. No other cookie can compare. Sweet regards, Kim Paladino p.s. I am based in Atlanta and I’ve been in the French macaron business since 2020 after leaving my job of seven years as a chemist. I have also worked as a recipe developer and food photographer for clients for over eight years. Check out my store and blog at TheFoodKimist.com

DON’T FALL SHORT ON ANOTHER RESOLUTION!

Update Your Estate Plan

It’s February 2022. If you’re putting off making a Will or Trust for another year, it’s time to get your butt in gear. You’re not getting any younger - none of us are. You need to plan ahead to avoid a disaster. My 31-year-old friend thought that he could put off estate planning. He was young, smart, and extremely healthy. Unfortunately, one day he was killed on his way to work. A relatively minor crash left his 2 toddler sons without a father, and their mother with most of their assets frozen & stuck in Probate Court. With just a little planning, he could have left his family in a much better position, without subjecting them to months of court and thousands of dollars in attorneys’ fees. Start this year off right by taking control and planning for the future. I promise that you’ll be glad you did.

Leave the drapes parted just a bit when you tuck in for the night in a luscious beach-front room at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club in Florida. That way, when the dark gives way to the morning light, you can roll out of bed and watch the sunrise in your robe from your patio or walk a few steps to the sand and greet the day. Since 1928, the resort has hosted the well-heeled and regular Joes like me to the sprawling property just outside Jacksonville on a special stretch of the Atlantic. Since Ponte Vedra is also a private beach club, there’s an air of familiarity and a slower pace that members bring to the vacation experience. Stand-outs are the 30,000 square foot Hollywoodinspired spa (think privacy and outstanding service) and dinner at the sparkling Seahorse Grille. You won't want to leave! PonteVedra.com

“People in the South have a greater compassion for their fellow man. The hospitality and the demeanor of the people is far more attractive than that of Los Angeles or New York.”

Waves of actors have washed ashore on the banks of the Chattahoochee over the last decade, as everything Hollywood migrates to the South. One of the most recent transplants is Karate Kid and Cobra Kai dojo sensei John Kreese, a character made globally infamous by Hollywood actor, Martin Kove. A seasoned actor whose career has spanned 50 years, Kove is known for such classic television roles as Detective Victor Isbecki on Cagney & Lacey, and Romeo Slade on Edge of the Night. With more than 231 actor credits, no other character has had a greater impact on Kove’s personal life as John Kreese, the tempestuous and habitually cruel dojo sensei from the iconic 1980 Karate Kid movies and the internationally lauded, television comedy-drama Cobra Kai. Kove began traveling back and forth to Atlanta to work on Cobra Kai and, like so many of his fellow actors, he began to fall in love with the Atlanta area and the subtle differences between life here in the South and life in Southern California. Everything is different, especially on set. “It seems that people aren’t just helping you because they have to or because it’s their job. They are helping you because they really care about your wellbeing,” says Kove. “People in the South have a greater compassion for their fellow man. The hospitality and the demeanor of the people is far more

48

attractive than that of Los Angeles or New York.” He has found that Southerners bring more feeling and integrity to their work, without the nasty edge that competition nurtures. For Martin Kove, reprising the role of John Kreese was an unexpected success. “I didn’t think that it would be as big a hit as it’s become,” says Kove. “It’s a phenomenon because parents wanted their kids to watch the original movies when the new series came out and eventually the kids made their parents watch the series because it was so popular.” Playing a character like John Kreese for years has left a definitive impression on Martin Kove. It is obvious that for "Cobra Kai" the character of John Kreese was written with greater color and texture than before and that the writers have given him much more depth but, ultimately “everybody likes the hard-ass John Kreese,” says Kove. “The writing on Cobra Kai was very important to me and these characters are so well written and powerful, they just stick with you.” The shooting schedule for two seasons had him playing John Kreese for six solid months and Kove found the character hard to unplug from. “With this character, you have to be very careful that he doesn’t crawl into your personal life. Staying in John Kreese long after you finish shooting is dangerous. He’s still a very frustrated angry fellow.

You know that you can’t function that way in real life.” “I had to shed the role or it would have torn away at my life even more. As an actor you have to have a reckoning with the character you play. It is hard to experience happiness in your own life when, to John Kreese, others’ points of view are inadequate.” Kove further explained that at certain times in the last year he can remember Kreese creeping in and having an impact. “If you are at all in touch with your character, he’s there and he is too loud, too domineering, and too frightening. Staying in that role is not a healthy place to be.” I finally caught up with Martin Kove at the Big Oak Tavern here in Roswell. We shared a delicious meal and discussed this character. “I lost my temper three times this past year. Each time I was totally engrossed in playing John Kreese,” says Kove. “I couldn’t turn him off and I did not even think about that until now. He has caused a lot of anxieties in my personal relationships.” Striking that life work balance is a chore for everyone. For most of us it is impossible to imagine reconciling a character that you play on television and the person that you are in the real world. Martin Kove is a compassionate family man whose real world is now here in the South. Tune into The Cobra Koves on Podcast One, Martin Kove’s new podcast featuring son Jesse and daughter Rachel, as they discuss all things Cobra Kai.

LOV E AFTER 50

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S

CHEMISTRY, CREATIVITY AND AN OPEN MIND MAY HELP YOU FIND YOUR NEXT VALENTINE.

Wayne and Julie reconnected after decades and look at them now!

Are you 50 years old-plus and looking for a way to meet new people? Online apps and websites can be exhausting, with messaging leading to lackluster results. So, what’s next? First, know there’s hope and possibility galore! Look at options for meeting singles. In person. “Get out of the pen pal stage and start meeting other singles your age range in person with Eight at Eight Dinner Club,” says matchmaker Emily Dodge. The dinner club sets up four single women and four single men at dinner at 8 p.m. in Roswell and surrounding areas. Eight at Eight matches the tables on age range and similar stages of life. It’s just a dinner party where you can meet new singles and maybe find your next relationship. If you are looking for a tailored way to meet your match, look into their sister company One on One Matchmaking.

Will a dinner club work for you? “The more fun you have that night, the more fun the others will have! Your dinner companions will naturally be drawn to you since you are positive, talkative, and a good listener,” says Dodge. And, of course, there’s that chemistry. “It’s always nice to have a first date where there is an immediate attraction to the person you are meeting! Then, it's about how well the conversation goes and if there is an initial spark,” says Roswell City Lifestyle’s senior marketing manager Karyn Slovin. “Not wanting the first date to end is a good sign of a good first date!” Supper clubs, online sites and apps are all options for finding that first date. “Other than online dating, it seems like the only way is if you are lucky enough to have a friend introduce you to someone that they think you might match well with,” says Karyn. Again, it’s all about relationships. And, for Karyn, she is looking for a man who shares some common interests. “Someone energetic, honest, loyal and yes, someone with whom I have great chemistry!” Or, keep your eyes open on social media and you might find an inspired conversation with an old friend. Julie Martel Wojenski and Wayne Albright met just out of high school in New Jersey and then again two decades later. They now run a successful photography business together here in Roswell. What makes love later in life so special? “It's appreciating the second chance we were given. When we are young, we sometimes fail to understand the gift that is standing right in front of us. Also because we have a history together, there are no surprises. We completely love, support, and respect our differences,” says Julie, a former model and retail manager, who now handles scheduling, staging, and logistics for Albright Photography. “The gap of our missed time apart has now given us much to talk about. We believe God nudged us together at this time in our lives and that is more than good enough for us! We are so looking forward to the rest of our story of choosing happiness together!” May we all find love and understanding during this magical month of February!
