Happy holidays, friends Welcome to the December issue of Roswell City Lifestyle! The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what feels so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. John Driskell Hopkins sings and plays guitar for the Zac Brown Band and lives locally in East Cobb. Hopkins has been battling ALS and he and his wife Jennifer took action to launch Hop On A Cure, committed to supporting research to prevent, reverse, and cure ALS while raising awareness, building a compassionate community, and unleashing the healing power of hope. They are true givers in town. Read our story on page 46. We know you're busy, so we're sharing some clever tips to make holiday entertaining easy with styling food hacks that look impressive, but are simple to create. Our talented staff photographer Wayne Albright has some handy hints to help you snap those fun and festive holiday photos this year, too. His list is on page 42. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what Roswell has to offer for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for many, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. Unfortunately, I know about this first hand and have experienced this in my family. I am so grateful for the memories we have of seasons past shared with my mother and brother. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to extend the grace, empathy and love of this season and always support our local partner businesses.

Top Band The Roswell High School Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Sara White-Farnell, performed at the KSU Orchestra Invitational. They performed a composition commissioned specifically for RHS Chamber Orchestra, Subterranean Dialogues by Richard Meyer, as well as Legend of Sleepy Hollow, also composed by Richard Meyer. The holidays are the icing on the cake for Atlanta & Company host, Christine Pullara. The sweetheart of Atlanta daytime television, Christine adores time with her family, celebrating traditions and nibbling on her mother’s red velvet cake, made with love and a story. "In our house, it's not Christmas without my mother's red velvet cake. She has been making it for decades, and so many friends and family members love it that she makes seven additional cakes for people to serve on Christmas Day. Believe me, that is no small task!” says Christine, who lives in Buckhead with her husband Jim and their daughters, Caroline and Catherine. “She is a warm, thoughtful, generous person and she puts all that love and care into making the most delicious and festive cake.” Violet Pullara started baking for her family and when she found her cake brought joy to friends, she decided to double, then more than triple her recipe so she could make deliveries to special people in her life who meant so much to her. "I've had other tasty red velvet cakes before, but there is just that intangible, special something that makes my mother's stand out from the rest,” says Christine. “It is always delicious and creamy and no matter how full you are after your holiday meal… there is no way you could pass up a slice! I dare you!”

This year, Christine and her family will celebrate Christmas with her brother-in-law here in Atlanta, then head to her hometown of Tampa to be with her extended family. Interior designer Diane Johnson helped Christine decorate her newly renovated kitchen this year, adding bright touches of shimmery red and greenery, glittery gold and a traditional wreath. “I love the accents Diane chose, just right for our modern white kitchen,” says Christine. Diane owned a retail location in Johns Creek for more than 25 years. She now works from her new space in the design district of Norcross and consults for interior design projects throughout Atlanta. “Christine’s beautiful neutral kitchen was a perfect palate for Christmas decor and it was a pleasure to work with such a vibrant and positive person,” says Diane. She brought her personal collection of English Cuthbertson Christmas tree plates for Christine’s own red velvet cake and sourced an urn-inspired vase and matching round platter, festive shiny gold deer and filled a curvy oversized glass apothecary jar with red ornaments. “I just love the vibe and now we’re all in the holiday spirit!” says Christine. “I hope you enjoy your holidays as much as I enjoy my mom's cake!”

If you don't have time to bake a dessert, but want to serve something that doesn't look store-bought, simply top it with berries, herbs, a sauce or a holiday prop to give it a little something extra. We made a trip to Trader Joe's and purchased most of these items, and after some simple assembling and minimal baking, we were able to create a beautiful, eye-catching holiday spread.

NEW YORK CHEESECAKE This inexpensive cheesecake was purchased at Trader Joe's, but definitely needed a little something to make it look festive. Candied pecans (we made ours from scratch but they can be purchased), fresh berries and mint sprigs added color, dimension and interest.

APPLE TART This apple tart was already really pretty right out of the box, however adding a few toppers made it look like it was made from scratch. Sliced pears, fresh herbs, berries and drizzled caramel added color and a homemade touch to this delicious treat.

DOUBLE CREME BRIE BOARD This double creme brie with truffles can be purchased at Trader Joe's and is always a crowd favorite. After baking the brie, add berries and a sauce of your choosing to the top as a flavor enhancer. To add interest, this brie is drizzled with local honey, berries and candied pecans and is served with crackers.

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE CAKE If you don't have time to bake a cake but want your store bought cake to look special, add berries and a holiday topper to give it that special flair. Fresh raspberries adorn the top of this cake. To add cascading fresh berries down the side, toothpicks can be used to hold them in place. Not only is it simple and quick to do, but it turns into the perfect entertaining table centerpiece.

Open the curtains and shutters to let in as much light as possible. In most cases it's best to avoid using the flash. 3. Avoid clutter in the scene. For portraits it is best to select a spot that is free from anything distracting that takes the attention away from your subjects. 4. Avoid distortion, keeping the camera at eye level of your subject is best. Get down low for the little ones, and the pets. Pointing the camera up or down makes things look out of proportion.

Julie & Wayne: We will be putting down the phone and spending quality time with family and friends. It will begin with decorating our home for the holidays, (Julie) knocks herself out transforming our space with the spirit of Christmas. We will attend community tree lightings, gather with friends at our favorite local spots to share bites, spirits, and good conversations. Christmas Eve will be spent with the entire family for a festive dinner together and a few early Christmas gifts to be opened by our grandkids... of course we will have the camera out to grab those excited faces of joy to add to our collection of memories. We will attend a celebratory midnight church service and spend a

quiet Christmas morning together for a few hours before gathering with our entire family again for a Christmas feast.

RCL: WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR THIS YEAR? J&W: The Lord has really blessed us. We have so much to be thankful for, including our love for each other and that we get to spend this time of our life together everyday, living, loving and working together. Our family is happy and healthy and achieving their goals. Our business is doing well, and we get to meet so many interesting people from all walks of life. It is not work when you love what you do. My mother was placed in assisted living out of state this year. She is battling Alzheimer's disease, but she is comfortable, happy and living in her moment. That is all we can hope for. We have great phone conversations. She still remembers who we are and laughs a lot. We are simply grateful for each day. From Diagnosis to a New Mission East Cobb resident, rock and roll superstar, and my friend, John Driskell Hopkins was diagnosed with ALS on December 22, 2021. Although it took a couple of months for John to get his head wrapped around what that would mean for him personally, John and his wife Jennifer, jumped into action to form a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. In that most precious of moments: “Hop On A Cure” in support of ALS was founded. Their dedication to changing the face of ALS had begun. Once everything was figured out, John or Hop, as he is lovingly referred to by family, friends, and fans worldwide, made the news public by sharing his diagnosis while surrounded by his friends from the Zac Brown Band on May 21, 2022. “We are jumping on every opportunity

Friends of Bulloch, Inc. hosted a special event to posthumously honor Helen M. Dunham and her magnificent Faberge-like Egg Legacy at Mittie’s Gift & Museum Shoppe, adjacent to Bulloch Hall last month. The exceptional eggs made by Helen Dunham will also be available for purchase at Mittie’s Christmas Luncheon at the Cherokee Town Club on December 6 and the Magnolia Ball on June 10, 2023. All of these events benefit the preservation of Bulloch Hall, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and a designated Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. Real ostrich, emu, and goose eggs have been hand-painted, carved, sculpted and adorned with Swarovski jewels to create delicate art that emulates the Faberge Eggs made for Russian aristocracy in 1886. They can take a week to a month to create. The eggs are valued between $50 and $700 a piece. The family entrusted over 100 one-of-a-kind eggs to Mittie’s Gift & Museum Shoppe to find a cherished new home for each egg.

THE HELEN M. DUNHAM STORY Helen M. Dunham died recently at 99 having spent 40 years of her life making exquisite Faberge Egg reproductions with a group of her friends - most of whom have also died. Mrs. Dunham was born in Missouri and earned two college degrees, one in art and the other in dress design. She married Roy Dunham, her high school sweetheart and a World War II pilot. They were married for 70 years and had four children: Sara, Mike, Rick and Merrily Dunham McLaughlin. During the Bush Administration, the Georgia Egg Commission selected the beautiful and creative entry by Helen Dunham as the Official Georgia 2008 Easter Egg, which was put on display at the White House with the other Official State Easter Eggs. The White House began displaying the decorated Easter Eggs in 1994. Laura Bush sent a personal note to Helen Dunham and she was invited to the White House, but could not attend. Enjoy an opening reception on December 14 from 5-8 p.m. Be among the first 100 to make a reservation at info@friendsofbulloch org. The precious eggs will be on display through December 20. The celebration included the release of five-barrel aged beers, five throw-back menu favorites from the past, and of course, great live music. From the Earth has become a staple for live music in Roswell with concerts on the inside stage as well as two years of the Back Porch Concert Series in the adjoining parking lot. The concert series brings in some of the largest and most wellknown musical acts throughout the Southeast as well as the nation. “Something we are most proud of is the assistance we have been able to provide to the community over these past five years," says Stevens. What gift are you excited about giving this holiday season and also where will you be shopping ? JOHN ALBERS, SENATOR ROSWELL RESIDENT A few years ago my wife Kari and I decided to give our sons legacy gifts now that they are adults. This year, we are compiling all our family recipes and putting them in a nice leather-bound binder. Each recipe has a story and is credited to a family member in our history. We hope they will add to it over time and continue to pass down the legacy. I try to shop local as much as possible. I love supporting our local businesses and community!

Also, my daughter got engaged on the beach of Lake Michigan this summer, so I’m making a hardcover photo book for her and her fiancé. The High Museum shop always has interesting gifts too. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

Big band leader, trumpeter, vocalist and all-around good guy, Joe Gransden recently moved to Roswell from in town Atlanta. He regularly gigs at Roaring Social and The Select in Sandy Springs and will be playing at City Springs’ Byers Theater on New Years Eve with Francine Reed. I caught up with Joe to chat about his family, music and the good life. We raise a glass of bubbly to Joe and his bright future!

SC: WE HEARD YOU MOVED TO ROSWELL. WELCOME! JG: We moved to Brookfield Country Club in Roswell in July. We have always loved it here. My parents have lived in Roswell since 1989. My wife Charissa and I wanted to find a neighborhood with lots of families, activities, golf, swimming, tennis, and major community involvement. We want our son to have the opportunity to form lasting relationships with children his age. Brookfield has everything we are looking for in a neighborhood.

SC: LIVING THE GOLF CLUB LIFE SEEMS TO AGREE WITH YOU. HOW OFTEN DO YOU GET ON THE COURSE AND WHO IN YOUR FAMILY PLAYS? JG: We love the lifestyle here at Brookfield, and we go to the country club almost every day to work out, hit golf balls, play tennis, swim or enjoy a family meal. I bought a golf cart so we can pull out of our driveway and be on the course in just a few minutes. Both my father and my son join me on the driving range regularly. Charissa loves to play tennis and meet friends at the club for social events.

SC: WHAT WILL YOUR FAMILY BE DOING FOR CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR? JG: We have family in all areas of the country. We are really looking forward to hosting several Christmas gatherings at our home this year, seeing family from New York City, Seattle, Charlotte, and different parts of Florida. I’m fortunate to have lots of holiday performances with my band this December, and I am excited for my family to come and enjoy the holiday spirit.

SC: MUSIC REIGNS IN THE GRANSDEN HOUSEHOLD. WHAT DO YOU LISTEN TO WHEN YOU'RE ENTERTAINING, COOKING WITH THE FAMILY AND GETTING PUMPED FOR A GIG? JG: You can usually hear music like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald or Chet Baker playing through our house! We love swing music, the crooners, big band jazz like The Count Basie Orchestra, New Orleans style jazz, and bebop. Everyone in our home loves to sing, and you can often find us belting out tunes while we gather at home.

SC: SOUNDS LIKE A BLAST! TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. JG: Charissa and I married 20 years ago, after meeting in college (music school) and dating for a number of years. Joey is 13, in the ripeness of being a teenager! He is a great tennis player, and he plays trumpet, like his dad. My mother and father have been married for 54 years. My father is a jazz piano player and vocalist. He still practices piano every day! He's super talented. My mother spent many years as a dancer and choreographer. She loves music and comes from a family full of musicians. She is an incredible woman! We used to marvel at the way my parents could bring people together. They would organize progressive meals with neighbors, and each course of the meal was at a different house. They hosted mystery dinners, wedding rehearsal dinners, countless baby showers, Thanksgiving meals for more than 15 people, Christmas gift exchanges with all the grandchildren and friends, and Easter egg hunts in the backyard!
