Sitting in a coffee shop in Nashville, her new home, rising country music star Peytan Porter smiles and concentrates on a journal entry. “It’s about mindful meditation and songwriting. Journaling gives me a first draft from the messiness of my brain before I write a song and helps me capture what’s going on in my life,” she says. She had just returned from a weekend in her hometown of Dawsonville. While a lot of her favorite haunts have changed and disappeared over the years, she can still see the stars from her front porch, visit with family, meet up with high school friends, hike and check out local breweries. And, that’s what matters most to her. Her songs are written from her heart. One of her hits, “Therapy,” is about a breakup and resonates with many. “I always feel sorry when people can relate with that one because it didn’t come from a great experience for me, but it’s also nice that people find some comfort,” says Peytan. While she first started writing for other performers, “a dream job,” this one was special. “‘Therapy’ was the first song I wrote that I felt like I didn’t want anyone else to sing it. It was personal. It sits in hope and is about reclaiming strength, and doing work on yourself before blaming others. It’s the heart of what I do.” While much of her songwriting is about unresolved emotions and conversations, she clearly has a message. In one of her personal favorites, an easy listen - “First Stone,” she tells us: “If everybody lived in big glass houses, I bet we’d all think twice before we threw the first stone.” And, in the chorus, she reminds us, “that love is really all that matters.” Recorded a year ago when she had not yet even played a show or launched her songwriting career, it’s still one she is proud of. Growing up in Dawsonville, one of three girls, she spent time in the basement listening to music, studying songwriters, literature and marketing. And, when she moved to Nashville, she surrounded herself with a supportive professional team but never stopped listening to her mom’s advice. “Personally, my mom is so tough and reminded me to figure it out. My strength comes from her. Life is too short to get hung up on things and not heal.” This month, Peytan will come home and gather at her Nan and Pop’s house with her parents and sisters, cousins and extended family. She has been experimenting now more than ever with cooking on her own and is honing a harvest salad recipe with apples, pepitas, walnuts and a dressing with a kick. After such a busy year, in this moment, she says is most thankful for the freedom and the space to pivot, surrounded by people who aren’t afraid to help her become the best version of herself. Now that her first record is out, In My Head, she is catching her breath and giving herself space. She will continue to write music and discover what version of herself she likes best. “I want to keep coming home to Nan’s food, but also hope to be touring and working on a new signature project.” With her spirit and self-reflection, it’s going to happen.

Leah Belle Faser may have shocked you with her powerful voice on Season 20 of American Idol, but the high school senior has been busy ensuring she enjoys life like any teenager would. Even with Idol last year, she was attending school in person. Anything she’s doing musically is a walking side by side with her life, but that’s how it’s always been - Leah comes from a musical family. Outside of the house that she still lives in with her parents, she has a brother at the University of Michigan studying musical theater. She studies with a vocal coach in Nashville (remotely, online) and formed a band in January that has been touring. “It’s the biggest thing that’s happened since Idol. We had a busy summer and they are like my older brothers, very creative and talented musicians,” says Leah Belle. “I love the full sound of a band and to be able to bond is very special.” She hopes to dive deeper into songwriting with her band this year when the outdoor concert season wanes. Working from her home in Vinings, with her cat and kitten by her side, she enjoys the quiet and solitude. “You have to be serious and grounded to be a songwriter and it’s a space I enjoy,” says Leah Belle. In her rare downtime, she walks through Atlanta’s neighborhoods to clear her head and breathe. She finds herself inspired. “I’ll drive to a new neighborhood or park, and will have 27 epiphanies!” This month, she’s performing around North Atlanta in some old haunts like the Olde Vinings Inn where she’s been playing since she was 13. “I couldn’t play guitar and would sing a few songs with Mark Miller and his band. That morphed into my passion for live performance and I learned to self-accompany and to land my own gig.” She worked up a set of 30-40 songs and is now forever grateful to that place and people. Earlier this year, Leah met Corey Curtis when she auditioned for the 20th Season of ABC’s American Idol where she received three yeses from the celebrity judges and the coveted golden ticket to Hollywood Week. “The whole thing is very involved and a bit terrifying, as you can imagine, but it was so exciting and I’m grateful for the opportunity. I got some really interesting feedback during the process which I’ve been able to put to good use. Since I was under 18 at the time, my mom got to come with me to everything so this was a really cool experience that we shared and definitely one that neither of us will ever forget,” she says. This year, her family is hosting Thanksgiving, so it will be full of tradition and some personalized hosting. “I’m really excited for this year’s Thanksgiving,” she says. “My mom and I have a tradition. We always make the charcuterie board and we get creative with cheeses and local honey.” Her grandparents live six houses away, and extended family will join too.

Corey Curtis isn’t just an American Idol contestant - he’s a Summerville, Georgia native. “Every time I return, I’m reminded of how far I’ve come. It’s not easy making something out of nothing.” He says spending the holidays at home is special because, “it’s where my journey began, all those years ago. It’s home.” In talking with him, you get a sense of his gratefulness. He’s happy for the opportunity to play music and does not take it for granted, treating his voice as a tool and his body as a working component. “I take care of my voice and my body,” he says. “I take about 15 to 20 minutes out of every morning to do my vocal lessons. I work out five days a week, intake plenty of protein and drink a lot of water. Healthy mindset, healthy body, healthy voice. They all go hand and hand for me.” Thanksgiving for him is one of fellowship, as Corey is one of eight siblings. Family is very important to him, and they have his back. “I’m thankful to say I’m close to my family and that they support my dream,” he tells Roswell City Lifestyle. The holiday is a time to celebrate that. “On Thanksgiving day, my seven siblings and their families, all come together at my mom’s house,” he says. “We collectively prepare the meal, sit down, eat, and enjoy a special fellowship!” The next three months for him are career nurturing - traveling, playing shows, recording songs, and releasing one of those recorded tracks. “I’m keeping my focus on the main thing,” he says, summing all of it up. “You can’t expect the reward without the work.”

Shannon and Burt Wright, owners of hair restoration studio Absolute Image Consulting, understand that living in gratitude is simple after seeing sick children still radiate joy. As experts helping men and women with non-surgical hair loss replacement, the Wrights have also assisted children experiencing illness-related alopecia. They give everyone the same level of service and care, and understand that restoring natural-looking hair means restoring self-confidence, too. Last month, the Wrights and Williams Cancer Foundation held their first Phoenix Benefit, which raised $17,000 to continue cancer research, help people receive treatment and recover emotionally. Shannon and Burt Wright: We periodically saw children with hair loss for one reason or another, whose parents were dealing with a mountain of expenses from medical bills. It took just one time seeing a single mother's heart sink when she heard how expensive it would be, for us to realize we could do more to help her and her little girl. So, we offered our service for free and helped with the cost of the products. When we finally attached her hair, that little girl's eyes got so big and bright, and her mother, aunt and dad were all crying. We realized what this meant.

Eric and I are the owners of Doodle Pies and here is our story. I met Eric back in 2005. On our first date, I remember him telling me how important his work-life balance was. I liked what I heard. It was that comment, along with a lot more, that attracted me and before long we were married and living a “balanced life”. I sunk into my role as executive homemaker and made sure to cook badly for the first nine years of our marriage. Ladies, just hold out… maybe your special person will get tired of eating bad food and take the reins of the household chef! The passion for cooking within Eric continued to increase, as did the demands of corporate America. Year after year, I watched the joy that I once saw in Eric begin to dwindle. You may be wondering about me and my passions. I have two that are on the top of my list: people and art... and the journey of Doodle Pies has grown my love for people. Of course we are in business to make a living, but I will tell you that this “balanced life” of being a restaurant owner must come with a great purpose that is more than just making money. It’s the people I work with, and the customers I get to interact with that fuel my energy and excitement over what Doodle Pies is becoming. It’s becoming a place of community. And that “balanced life” is now defined more by living with purpose and passion, instead of how my day is broken up. Doodle Pies is our baby and this baby requires a lot of attention. So how was this idea born, you may wonder. It was a drive back from church one Sunday last March. The conversation was effortless. Eric suggested, “Let’s open a pie shop with personal-sized pies and I will figure out how to cook them fast.” If anyone could figure it out, it would be Eric. It would take a few more conversations before the idea was fully developed. The peace I felt was so incredible that I knew we were on the right path. Two months after having that conversation in the car, Eric quit his corporate job. We did it! We stepped out in faith and the adventure continued.

WHY ROSWELL?

Providence brought us to Roswell. We sifted through 70 locations from our real-estate broker with a fine tooth comb. Nothing excited me and none carried any peace. The real-estate saying of “location, location, location” continued to ring in our ears. We had a novel idea, but if we didn’t get the location right, it wouldn’t matter. A friend of Eric’s told him about the location where we are now. I made the drive out, peered in the window and there it was: peace. I knew in my heart we had found our location. It was only after we committed to the space, that I began to hear the buzz of the unique community that exists in Roswell. We feel blessed to be here.

PIES FOR NOVEMBER

We are excited to have our pumpkin mousse pie and sweet potato pie for the month of November. If you aren’t a pumpkin pie fan (I know you are out there because I am one of them!), there is a pretty good chance you’ll enjoy our pumpkin mousse. It’s made just like our best selling chocolate mousse pie, but instead of using chocolate we use pumpkin on a ginger-snap crust. It goes great with coffee.

One: I will not be cooking. Two: Eric creates a spread with everything traditional. We always have stuffing, as we were raised with parents from the North. We have homemade cranberry sauce, with homemade this and homemade that every year. The menu changes a bit every year, as the foodie in Eric cannot be silenced. The best part is getting together with family. We have a rotating schedule between families, and now as the years tick on we lose track. 1.5oz Plantation Pineapple Rum .5oz Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice .5oz House Made Thyme/Turmeric Syrup .5oz Carrot Juice

This is a fun cocktail, made only for our Holbrook locations, that leans slightly on the tiki side of cocktails. Combine all ingredients into a shaker and shake hard. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with fresh thyme/ pineapple leaf and a lemon wheel. How to make the syrup: we take fresh thyme from our garden and steep it with some turmeric powder in a cheesecloth tied up with string. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil, add 2 cups of sugar and allow this to come to a slow rolling boil. Turn the heat down and place the thyme/turmeric in the pot and allow to steep for 30-40 minutes. Once the syrup has become a vibrant orange color, remove from the stove and allow the syrup to cool. Gently squeeze the cheesecloth to allow the syrup to come out, but not the turmeric powder. Label and store this mixture for 7 days. This can also be enjoyed with earl grey tea as replacement for the rum, for a non-alcohol option.

HEALTH BENEFITS: Turmeric: Curcumin, the main active ingredient in turmeric, has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. Thyme: Can boost your mood. Thyme is shown to increase concentrations of serotonin and dopamine. It might have a positive effect on your feelings and mood.

1.5oz Empress Gin .5oz Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice .5oz Rosemary Syrup .5oz Cocchi Americano

This is an original cocktail exclusive to the program I wrote for Holbrook. Empress gin out of the bottle has a blue tint to it due to it being naturally dyed by butterfly tea pods. Combined with lemon or lime juice, it produces a bright purple color. Combine all of the ingredients into a shaker and shake hard. Double strain into a Nick and Nora glass. Garnish with a fresh rosemary sprig and a lime wheel. How to make the syrup: We use fresh rosemary from our garden. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil and then add 2 cups of sugar. Allow this to come to a slow rolling boil. Turn the heat down and place 2 cups of rosemary in the pot and allow to steep for 30-40 minutes. Once the syrup has a thick consistency and the rosemary no longer has its intense green color, remove the syrup from the stove and allow to cool down. Label and store this mixture for 7 days. This can also be enjoyed with green tea as a replacement for the gin, for a non-alcohol option.

An Attitude of Gratitude

Scott Rigsby lost his legs at age 18, but never stopped running.

Scott Rigsby turned tragedy into triumph. Despite losing his legs, he became a world-class athlete, author, speaker, and philanthropist. Scott was the first double-amputee on prosthetics to complete the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon, which includes swimming 2.4-miles, biking 112 miles and running 26.2-miles in one day! He also finished the Boston Marathon six times! Scott’s story is inspirational and aspirational, and his zest for life is contagious. In 1986, Scott had a catastrophic truck accident that eventually claimed his lower legs and left him with a traumatic brain injury. He suffered from depression and addiction, but overcame these tremendous obstacles to become a record-breaking endurance athlete. He learned to define his life by what he has and not what he doesn’t have. “My body doesn’t define me,” Scott told Roswell Lifestyle Magazine recently, "Nor do my legs. Whether made of shiny metal or smooth skin, they're a gift to share, not a burden to bear”. Though Scott is now known for his upbeat attitude, he admits that he’s not always positive. He says that there are periods when he struggles with fear, doubt, and uncertainty; and when he yells, screams, and sometimes throws a fit because things aren't going his way. When these times arise, he says, “I remind myself that it’s not my full story and that God is a kind, wise, benevolent, and all-knowing heavenly father with a wonderful plan for my life.” However, he can remember his greater purpose and uses his faith to carry on. This strong faith allowed Scott to remain grateful and willing to give back to others throughout his life. Scott grew up with a special needs brother who taught him to have compassion for those with physical or mental challenges. He believes that his brother Tim defied the odds to live a fulfilling life, making him the real “Ironman” of the family. Tim’s example of resilience inspired Scott to push beyond his limits following his accident and to have empathy

for veterans and others dealing with hardships. He understands the value of love and encouragement from those around him. HELPING FAMILIES FIND PEACE AFPI Global & Affair Investigations is based here in Roswell. Owner George Taylor spends his days uncovering the truth. His private investigation firm finds lost loved ones, handles surveillance and goes behind the scenes to help clients rest easier. We sat down with George to find out more. Here is his story. As I reflected back on my career, it has always been about helping others. My grandfather and my daddy were like that. Many traits are passed genetically so I guess that helping others was a trait that was passed to me. My mom always thought I would be a preacher. In my 26 years as a federal agent, primarily in law enforcement, getting people answers to their problems and helping the community has been my passion. I feel that nothing is worse than, “not knowing.” It keeps people awake at night - wondering and anxious. It's not good for the family and it is unhealthy for oneself. The anxiety can build up and affect your work and personal relationships. I feel that I am truly blessed and I answer God’s calling when someone reaches out to me for help. Recently, I worked with Heather Hays and Associates Intervention and Treatment Consulting. Heather and the family felt the need to hire me to watch over their young adult child during a family crisis. This case started as local surveillance to give the parent and concerned friends periodic updates.

However, at 2 a.m. one weekend night, the young adult took off driving. A simple 2-day case concluded three weeks later with flights, rental cars, drone footage, running to obtain the right evidence, and over 10,000 miles of combined team driving. My investigators and I were able to provide continuous updates and videos of this child’s behavior to all concerned family and friends that love this child. When it was closed, the embrace from the father, thanking us for the peace of mind we gave him and his family and friends, reinforced the difference my team and I made. Also, we had a mother contact us when her mentally challenged daughter departed a care facility and disappeared. Within days through social media and watching a TikTok video this young woman had posted, we examined the paint color of a wall behind her and the pattern of the drapes, and we found her hundreds of miles away. A local pastor called on me to help a member of his church. The member had fallen suddenly ill and was in the ICU and was unable to provide any next of kin. My immediate task was to drop everything I was doing to help the pastor, hospital and this dying man locate and notify his kin so they could say goodbye. Within a few hours, we provided an entire list and helped those family members get in touch with each other. None of us deserve to leave this earth alone in our final hours and I am so relieved I answered my phone when I did. AFPIGlobal.com
