GIVING BACK WE SAT DOWN WITH THE OWNER OF LUCKY'S BURGERS & BREWS TO FIND OUT WHY GIVING IS HIS FAVORITE DISH.
ARTICLE LISA WELTSCH PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
LUCKY? YES! GENEROUS? ABSOLUTELY! Diane and Ernie Geyer welcome you (and your pooch) to Lucky's
LISA WELTSCH: This month, the magazine is celebrating gratitude. Will you share how Lucky’s got its name? ERNIE GEYER: I’m a prostate cancer survivor and during my treatment, my wife Diane suggested our dog Lucky join me in Jacksonville where I was going through proton therapy. To finish the treatment and have a buddy waiting there for me, consoling and protecting me from the emotional overload, having to shift my focus to him was probably the best thing that could have ever happened. It was as if Lucky dog knew what he was there to do, providing the love and support on behalf of the family. LW: What is your vision for Lucky’s Burger & Brew? EG: 12 years ago when we bought the property, the Roswell business landscape was nothing like it is today. We were inspired by the vision of building a restaurant that brought in the community - to share our love of community, dogs, and a family-friendly restaurant. Lucky’s story was inspired by my dog Lucky and my life’s good fortune and recovery from cancer. After 6 months of being open and generating revenue, we knew we hit a home run with the outpouring of love from the Roswell Community. LW: We love that you have something happening just about every night at Lucky’s. What’s up for the holiday season? EG: We are planning our 11th annual Santa Paws event at all three Lucky’s locations during December. We have a loyal customer, Steve Duncan who steps in as “Santa Steve” every year, for photos sessions with pups and family to raise money for Golden Retriever Rescue Atlanta. We are also planning a New Year’s Eve formal dinner at our Roswell location with music and a steak dinner prepared by our founding chef partner, Ted Lescher. 18

OPEN HOUSE
TASHA MOODY OF IRIS & OAK BELIEVES THE BEST INTERIORS ARE GRACED WITH A BALANCE OF COLOR, TEXTURE AND NATURAL ELEMENTS. When setting the table for us this month, she simply layered neutral woven textiles along with clean white artisan-inspired dinnerware, topped off with a cascade of festive gourds and mums available at the grocery store or local nursery. TASHA'S ADVICE: Hosting a beautiful Thanksgiving is all about being prepared and having a plan. Without a plan, we can tend to go overboard and be lost at work in the kitchen or inundated with tasks around the house. A plan helps us not only prepare, but also pare down, delegate, and generally have a better-finished product with a more present interpersonal experience along the way. Aim to have fewer things done well rather than many that are barely done. Iris-Oak.com

In Life, Every Second Matters PAY ATTENTION, MOLLY IS TALKING!
A SECOND LATER IS AN ALPHARETTABASED NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO EDUCATING SOCIETY ABOUT THE DANGERS OF DISTRACTED DRIVING. Founder Molly Welch continues to touch the lives of people across Georgia and beyond, as she recounts her personal distracted driving story. “The mere fact that my life changed in a split second is reflected in my physical demeanor,” said Molly, “I am passionate about sharing my story with others and hopefully to spare them from the same experience.” In Molly’s “split second,” she reached for a tape recorder while driving home from college and was involved in a head-on collision with a pickup truck. The entire accident, from impact to ambulance, was recorded forever. As a result of this accident, Molly suffered severe traumatic brain injury and paralysis. 28

Molly Welch
Today she is dedicated to distracted driving education and awareness. She says, “One day while I was at work I felt that I had to let everyone know my story and to perhaps impact the lives of others.” There are hurdles in life that we all must overcome. Those hurdles help to define us one way or another. They reveal our strengths and our weaknesses. Molly has not only faced the medical reality of distracted driving on a deeply personal level, but she has also beat the odds and has become a national advocate for the increasingly important message of distracted driving. Molly’s road to recovery was not easy. Given only a 50-50 chance of surviving, doctors thought that she would be immobilized for the rest of her life. After the accident, Molly faced weeks of being in a coma at Atlanta’s Shepherd Center before there were any real signs of recovery. She endured months of minimal consciousness before she would truly be on her path to recovery, but she kept on fighting. Next, she had years of extensive physical, speech and occupational therapy. She had to relearn everything. Resilient and determined, Molly returned to Auburn and completed her degree, walking across the stage to receive her diploma with the help of her brother. Today, Molly continues to spread the message about distracted driving and to share her personal story with others. High school students are her favorite audience. “They are young and impressionable and they are our future drivers,” says Molly, “I am hoping that they ‘wake up’ to the seriousness of being behind the wheel.” At the end of the day Molly has become even more of a vibrant and passionate young woman than anyone would have ever imagined. Her forever message is quite simple, “An accident only takes a second. Don’t Drive distracted. It’s a second that you’d wish you could have back.” ASecondLater.com

OUR SALUTE TO NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE GIVING A PRIORITY, THIS SEASON AND ALWAYS
LIZ SCULL Liz Scull joined the Roswell Woman’s Club in 2016, an organization of nearly 200 women focused on giving back to our North Fulton community. This year the club hosted BOO Y’aLL Scarecrows in Historic Roswell and the companion fundraiser – Sip & Stroll. The proceeds will fund education and charities in North Fulton. She is chair of the Information Technology Committee and is the wizard behind the club’s in-house app and social media. She also serves on the Viola Foundation Board, with the annual Mardi Gras Ball benefitting local charities. In 2022, the 7th Annual Voilà Mardi Gras Ball will benefit the DDD Foundation. She has devoted herself to serving the community since retiring from her career in human resources and customer service. Liz is very community-oriented but also has a wonderful family that she makes her priority. She is married to Guy and they have three adult children and four grandchildren. “Living in North Fulton since 1987, I’ve grown to love my town and the Georgians who call this place HOME. Volunteering my time and talent to my community enriches my life beyond measure and hopefully, makes a positive difference in the lives of the people around me,” says Liz.

TRAN BUI SMITH Tran Bui Smith of Roswell is an Emmy award-winning host and producer, who owns a video production company called On Location With Tran. Her family fled Vietnam by boat during the Fall of Saigon in 1975. After staying in several refugee camps, they came to the United States with only a bag of belongings. She found her passion in television news and storytelling, but her purpose is to give back to the country that has given her so much. In 2010 she co-founded a family volunteer group called Little Helpers and today there are 20 chapters across the country. The goal is to help children make volunteerism a part of their lives and appreciate their blessings. Her favorite local charities include The Sandwich Project, Box of Balloons Roswell, Children’s Development Agency, MUST Ministries, Simple Needs GA and Mostly Mutts Animal Rescue. WHITNEY D E M A R L O O E LT M A N N Following her father’s 2012 dementia diagnosis, Whitney DeMarlo Oeltmann quickly discovered there was a lack of information, family resources and support offered for those living with dementia and their caregivers. She felt called to help others facing similar uncertainty, and in 2016, she founded Dementia Spotlight Foundation (DSF). Whitney wears many hats at DSF, serving as co-founder, CEO and executive director. The Foundation recently joined forces with Roswellbased dementia support group, Amy’s Place and are expanding their offerings throughout Georgia and Florida. She leads employees and volunteers and advocates to ensure all programs meet the Foundation’s goals of providing a “guiding light” for those looking for a path forward. Oeltmann is also committed to raising public understanding of dementia-related diseases. When she’s not spearheading the next initiative for Dementia Spotlight Foundation or spending time with her family, Oeltmann enjoys reading, cooking and birdwatching. She lives in Brookhaven with her husband and two daughters and is an active member of her community.

MIKE HARRIS Mike Harris serves on the Roswell Roots Festival Committee, Roswell Arts Fund Board, the Fulton County Remembrance Committee, and as the president of the board of The Friends of Mimosa Hall & Gardens. He also serves as a co-facilitator for the Atlanta Chapter of Coming to the Table Group. “That's a lot of activity and a lot of commitments for sure, but I firmly believe that it is my responsibility and duty to serve my community. I ascribe to the adage that ‘if not me who, and if I can, why wouldn't I’?” He uses his interest in art to fuel his community and says engaging with artists, makers, and enthusiasts brings him joy. He and his wife are avid collectors. “I also care deeply about where I live, my community, the environment and I want to do my part to make my community vibrant, open, and healthy. Roswell offers many opportunities to engage with nature, great food and a diverse crowd of people. I am happiest when I am among people that enjoy life and I work hard to be one of these,” says Mike.

TA L AYA P A R K E R Talaya Parker is the Executive Director (CEO) at HomeStretch Inc. She is responsible for increasing community awareness of the agency’s mission and funding opportunities. HomeStretch, Inc. is a nonprofit agency whose mission is to guide homeless families towards permanent housing and lasting stability. HomeStretch, Inc. owns and operates a total of 39 affordable and transitional supportive housing units. Formerly, she held leadership roles in sales, marketing, human resources and operations. In 1999, Talaya was offered an opportunity to relocate to Atlanta, where she continued to develop corporate and social responsibility initiatives. She had the pleasure of working with global icons and prominent leaders in the community such as Congressman John R. Lewis and Coretta Scott King. Ms. Parker partnered with organizations that supported education, health, military veterans, empowerment and human rights. She also served as a Regional Diversity and Inclusion (BRG) Leader with a population over 4,000 associates in the southeast. She spearheaded groups such as Cultural Business Resource Groups, Women in Business and First Responders. She developed a reading program for a local elementary school. Ms. Parker’s volunteerism and charity work extends beyond the United States. Talaya has served on missions that supported people in need in Africa, Haiti and India.
ADDISON GADDY Addison Gaddy is a junior at Centennial High School. Recently, she has been very involved in global issues, and noticing areas needing improvement in our own community. For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, she took on a program that can help kids and teens cope with racial trauma. Racial trauma is the mental and emotional injury caused by encounters with racial bias and ethnic discrimination. “Many people who have been effected by racial trauma have kept it inside and it can lead to serious physical and mental issues in the future. My plan is to work with psychologists at Emory University to share tips and tricks of coping with racial trauma. That way young people don't have to carry it with them in the future. This program will be available to everyone and has the ultimate goal of creating sensitivity to serious topics, so people feel like they can talk about their feelings freely and without judgement. I plan on working with other organizations and students to make this a team effort. I hope that this program will make the topic of race more comfortable to talk about for all students, so we can gain a better understanding of each other.” Outside of school she likes to read, knit/crochet and hang out with friends. 36

The Andes Mountains are among the most beautiful I’ve ever been to and when you see what the Inca people built in the 1400’s – it is nothing short of miraculous. Everyone should go see it. As far as training, I usually work out twice a day when I’m getting ready for a big hike. I’m currently training for Aconcagua (South America’s tallest summit at 22,000 feet above sea level). I’m usually tired, so my motto is “Do it tired!” ROSWELL LIFESTYLE: You have made your home in Sentinel on the River. How did you land in Roswell? The organization provides programming in adaptive sport, recreation, and physical activity for Georgia’s youth, adults, veterans and military personnel with physical disabilities and PTSD. We love that you were inspired to help them as you were planning for your 2018 hike in the Grand Canyon. Why did you decide to jump on board to raise money and awareness for them? LS: I personally believe that by giving back I have become a better, kinder and more humane person. You know the verse, “it’s better to give than receive.” It’s so true. Our role in life isn’t just to serve ourselves. It’s to find a higher calling that gives our lives meaning and purpose through service. When I see the BlazeSports participants – many of whom are confined to wheelchairs – I feel completely in awe of them and their disregard for their physical challenges. Here are children and veterans who could easily stay home and feel sorry for themselves, but they don’t. In fact, they have better attitudes than a lot of able-bodied people I know – including me! RANT TERRA BISTRO AND THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, UPENDED OUR LIVES. While traveling to investigate the warmer states of the Southeast, Roswell’s quality of life and highly-rated high schools drew us in. We discovered historic downtown Roswell and fell in love with the old Public House space across from Roswell Square. We learned of Roswell’s history and this location’s ties to the beginnings of Roswell itself. It was almost love at first sight and we knew our space on Atlanta Street would be our new restaurant home. We knew the concept would be similar to our previous restaurant, Terra Bistro, which was upscale, adventurous, and inspired by international cuisine. That’s because the chef

same way as a teenage line cook more than 35 years ago. We moved in but hadn’t yet decided on a name for the new restaurant. While kicking around a few possibilities, neighbors would stop by. Their community pride and excitement to see this iconic space coming back to life was intense and inspiring. It became obvious that the name of the restaurant had to connect to Roswell. Of course, our location on Atlanta Street provided the answer, A-Street. One year later, we are blown away by the support and encouragement. We’re still getting to know our neighbors’ tastes, so our menus are constantly evolving. Some staples are Potato Crusted Grouper, Guinness Glazed Ribs, and Catherine’s Revenge, which is a gin cocktail named after our resident spirit. There is so much history here to draw inspiration from.
