LIFESTYLE LETTER
Please Allow Me to Introduce Myself My name is Wyatt Layman and I’m the new publisher of Rogers City Lifestyle. I’m excited to introduce myself to you all. While I’m new to owning this magazine, I’m not new to facilitating the telling of Northwest Arkansas stories. I launched Bentonville City Lifestyle in September of 2024, which is also when Rogers City Lifestyle was launched. It’s been great to work along side the Rogers publishers. I’m looking forward to continuing where they left off in telling Rogers stories and helping local businesses and organizations connect with their community. You’ll learn more about me and my family as you read these letters each month. I generally like to tell stories from home because I have a toddler who is always good fodder for lifestyle writing. That said, I get the “how did you end up starting a magazine?” question a lot. The very short version of that story is that my degree and background are both in writing. Apart from a stint in operations management, it’s been my career and interest and I’m beyond excited to be doing it full time again. I grew up in the Ozarks in a very rural community that was steeped in culture and the storytelling of that culture. For generations, people sat in those hills and told stories to one another. They were stories about people, places, history, and legends. At some point we started writing them down. I think something about that just stuck with me and it’s incredibly rewarding and humbling to now tell stories in this area. I’ve heard it asked, “Wouldn’t it make more sense to have one magazine for Rogers and Bentonville?” My answer is “no.” While I’m excited to be the publisher of both Rogers and Bentonville City Lifestyle, it’s important that they continue to be separate magazines featuring stories that are unique to each community and we’ll see to it that they always are. Thank you for inviting us into your home each month. I hope I might meet you soon. All the best,

There’s a shift happening in women’s health—a cultural moment where knowledge, wellness, and self-advocacy are taking center stage. Instead of bracing for aging, more women are preparing for it, embracing conversations around perimenopause, menopause, and longevity with a refreshing honesty. And at the heart of this movement is a deeper understanding of the body’s greatest ally: strength.
12
G E T ACT IV E | FI TNES S
Strength training, also known as resistance training, has moved to the forefront for women as they recognize how essential muscle strength and bone density are for staying active and independent. As a result, more women are stepping confidently into the weight room and embracing training that once felt like a male-dominated space. “Strength has become cool for women, and that’s really amazing to see because it’s going to improve their overall quality of life,” says Evan Loomis, a physical therapist who specializes in orthopedic therapy and co-owner of Specialized Physical Therapy of NWA in Rogers and Bentonville.
WHY STRENGTH IS SO IMPORTANT
While bone density naturally declines with age in both men and women, women begin losing bone earlier and at a faster rate, Evan says. The decline accelerates sharply after menopause, largely due to the significant drop in estrogen. According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, osteoporosis is four times more common in women over 50 than in men, and they tend to have fractures five to ten years earlier compared with men. A growing body of research also shows just how closely bone density and overall strength are tied to long-term health. A decrease of just one standard deviation in bone density—a shift that represents roughly 30% of the population—nearly doubles a woman’s risk of death from any cause as she ages, Evan says. In other words, even a modest drop in bone density can have a significant impact on overall health and longevity.

Strength-related markers tell a similar story. Evan explains that grip strength, for example, has been identified as a predictor of all-cause mortality in older adults, even more closely associated than blood pressure. While grip strength itself isn’t the cause of longer life, it reflects the preservation of lean muscle mass and functional strength—key factors that reduce the likelihood of falls, fractures, illness, and the cascade of complications that contribute to mortality later in life. But Evan points out that it’s not just about longevity, it’s also about quality of life. As life expectancy increases, being strong and having good bone density can allow seniors to stay active, maintain independence, and fully enjoy the activities they love—hiking, traveling, playing with grandchildren— rather than being limited by injuries or frailty.
“If you don’t work at that, as you age, it will creep up on you, and a lot of people suffer from that,” Evan says. “But you can be proactive—it’s never too late to start.” Beyond increased bone density and reduced morbidity, resistance training has a plethora of benefits including: increased lean muscle mass, improved functioning of the immune system, more regulated metabolism, improved balance, and better joint protection. Even for those who exercise regularly with cardio or endurance activities, strength training is essential, Evan says. It builds a resilient foundation that prevents injuries and improves performance. “You don’t have to love strength training, but for whatever activity you do love or want to do, strength training is one of the best vehicles to get you there to be able to do it,” he says.

Training Tips from Evan Loomis, PT • Set your goals: Make short-term strength goals that are realistic enough to achieve, but challenging enough to motivate you. You can always set a new goal once achieved. • Consistency is critical: Missing workouts once in a while might be fine, but regular interruptions will stall your progress and increase injury risk. • Your form matters: If you don’t have a coach, filming your sets and reviewing technique is the next best way to prevent form breakdowns that can stall progress or increase injury risk. • Recovery: How much you eat and sleep will impact how quickly and how sustainably you make progress in the gym. • Training with pain: For occasional aches and pains that interfere with training, see if you feel better after an extended warmup first. If not, modifying training around pain may be imperative. • Know when to get help: Injuries and setbacks are a small but not totally unavoidable part of both life and training. Some training issues can be worked out solo. Other issues require the help of a qualified coach or physical therapist. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

“I MADE THAT DEAL UNDER THE CAR, THAT IF I MADE IT, I WAS GOING TO LISTEN, AND IT GUIDED ME TO FITNESS.” Melissa Corbit was 15 years old when a tragic accident forever changed the trajectory of her life. As she was walking, a car backed into her and she was pulled underneath it. She doesn’t remember much from that day, only the faces looking down at her and the biting cold. She recalls the desperate pleas she sent to God: “If you save me, I’ll listen,” she kept thinking.
Miraculously, Melissa survived. But the road ahead was uncertain. Her doctors painted a grim picture: she might remain a paraplegic, she probably wouldn’t be able to have children, or, if she ever walked again, she would need a cane or walker for life. Melissa’s physical therapist was the one who stressed the importance of strength training to get back on her feet. He shrugged off her doctors’ bleak prognosis. “Don’t listen to all of them, you have to be strong,” he told her.
STRENGTH IS THE FOUNDATION
It took Melissa a year after the accident to get out of her wheelchair and use a walker, and then another year to ditch the walker. She underwent two surgeries throughout the recovery process. The pain was intense—at one point her mom had to call an ambulance because she fell and couldn’t get up. “Pain is a big factor in changing people,” Melissa says, noting that at that point, she was studying everything she could about fitness, determined to rebuild her body. Melissa walked with a limp throughout high school, but by the time she was 18 or 19, she felt strong enough to push her limits. Her physical therapist’s words stayed with her, guiding her as she embraced strength training as a core foundation to her exercise regime. CONTINUED >

“I really think that I am what I am today because I always strength train,” she says. “I truly believe if I didn’t, I’d still be crawling around to get to the bathtub.” Though the road to recovery was arduous, Melissa defied the odds, and her journey inspired her to help others. She earned an exercise science degree and became a personal fitness trainer, sharing her passion and experience with anyone looking to improve their health. And, Melissa also gave birth to four children—an achievement her doctors originally hadn’t expected. After moving to Northwest Arkansas about a decade ago from Little Rock, she worked as a personal training manager for the Jones Center before joining the Rogers Activity Center around five years ago.
18

Now, more than three decades after her accident, she’s stronger than ever, working with dozens of clients each week as they pursue their own health and fitness goals. “I always live by the philosophy of stronger is better, and everything else is a fringe benefit,” she says. “Strength training is the fountain of youth.” Throughout her life, she’s remained committed to her deal with God, believing she was led down the path she was supposed to follow. “I made that deal under the car, that if I made it, I was going to listen, and it guided me to fitness,” Melissa reflects. “I always thought I was meant to have the wreck, because I was meant to do this.”

ARTICLE BY APRIL SCHULTE-BARCLAY
Values Is the most important key to living a full and healthy life hiding from you? There are many factors to consider when thinking about what constitutes health. The food we eat, exercise, environmental influences, our emotions, and our spiritual awareness are all pillars of health. However, there is one factor that tops the list which often goes unspoken; living in alignment with your value system. Defining values helps a person to structure their life based on personal belief systems by determining what is most meaningful and important to them. From there, a sense of purpose is derived and defined values become tenets from which to live. There are plentiful examples of values, and they vary from person to person. Some examples of values include family, humility, benevolence, leadership, kindness, independence, creativity, and adventure. Our emotions serve to guide us to understanding whether our actions are in alignment with our values. When we live incongruently with our value system, we are betraying ourselves and delivering a subconscious message that we do not matter. Emotions that can come from not living in accordance with our values are based in fear and include anxiety, depression, anger, resentment,

and jealousy. Living from a place of fear tends to foster bad habits such as addictive behavior, poor dietary choices, negative sleep habits, and unhealthy relationships. Physiologically, the natural flow of energy in the body becomes stuck, wreaking havoc in the body physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. From there, symptoms and illness ensue. However, when we love and respect ourselves enough, we will spend our time and energy according to our values and emotions where love becomes more prevalent. Those emotions include gratitude, joy, peace, comfort, connection, trust, and happiness. Living from love leads to a desire, willingness and commitment to engage in activities that fulfill our sense of purpose. By doing so, our body’s energy moves with ease. When our energy flows freely, we feel vital, healthy, purposeful, and joyful. Identifying our values becomes easier when we create space in our lives to understand what brings us meaning in life. Here are five steps to create space to aid in identifying your values:
5. Speak your values out loud
1. Grounding/Earthing I have experienced it myself and I hear so many others share a similar experience, that being in nature is healing. Getting our hands into the earth with gardening, walking along the beach, taking a hike, or even lying in the grass brings an almost indescribable sense of well-being. Connecting with the earth’s electrical charge is thought to aid in pain reduction, modulate the immune system, and reduce inflammation. It also can lead to feeling more centered, allowing us to focus on what is most important to us.
There are many benefits to literally speaking our truths and discussing our values out loud with a trusted confidant. Bouncing ideas and having meaningful discussions can help us determine our framework and organize our thinking. Sometimes friends and family may not provide the most objective perspectives and professional counseling or life coaching may be more appropriate, while at other times a friend or family member is the most perfect fit! When we live in alignment with our values, we are honoring ourselves in the most self-loving way. From there, our vibrancy shines to our loved ones, our neighbors and even strangers we see out and about. It becomes not only the best gift you can give yourself, but that of our community. So cheers to 2026, let’s make this the best year yet!
2. Meditation/prayer Setting your intentions in quiet solitude using meditation or prayer provides clarity. Meditation may seem overwhelming, but you can make it simple by not expecting perfection in the process. I suggest finding guided meditations online that grab your attention. Try various guided meditations until you find one that feels right.
3. Exercise In addition to the more obvious benefits of exercise, it temporarily unblocks stagnation thereby creating space for objectivity.
4. Journaling Getting thoughts on paper helps clarify intentions.

K E TA M I N E FOR MENTAL
Health
NWA PSYCHOLOGIST USES INFUSION THERAPY TO TREAT CONDITIONS THAT HAVE NOT RESPONDED TO TRADITIONAL THERAPIES
Advancements in mental health treatment have grown exponentially in recent years, expanding what support can truly look like. Breakthroughs are emerging not only in oral medications but also in the evolution of psychotherapy itself. In the last decade or so, an additional treatment for mental health conditions has been garnering more attention: ketamine. Ketamine is primarily an FDA-approved general anesthetic for diagnostic and surgical procedures used most often for pain relief and sedation. But researchers and physicians have been exploring the use of ketamine to help with mental health conditions. One FDA-approved ketamine-based medication, esketamine, or brand name Spravato, can be prescribed for adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). However, low doses of ketamine can also be administered medically through infusions as an “off-label” treatment for conditions such as TRD and acute suicidal ideation. Ketamine infusion therapy has also been used by doctors to treat

conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, fibromyalgia, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, chronic pain, and migraines. One of the pioneers in bringing this treatment option to Northwest Arkansas is psychologist Dr. Kathleen Wong. Dr. Wong originally moved to Northwest Arkansas in 2005, opening her own practice in 2007. In 2013, she opened Bridges to Wellbeing in Fayetteville with Licensed Professional Counselor Cheryl Williams, and, in 2017, their clinic became one of the first in the area to add ketamine infusions as a treatment option. Dr. Wong began researching the treatment options with ketamine for mental health after being approached by a patient who had received their original ketamine treatments in New York and were looking for a clinic that offered boosters locally. She says the studies she found from organizations like the National Institute of Health and that patient’s own testimony of how much the infusions helped them drove her pursuit to learn more about the treatments. Initially, the clinic could only treat one patient at time, but demand grew quickly. The clinic now offers five infusion treatment rooms. Dr. Wong says she gets referrals from other therapists, psychotherapists, and personal doctors, but is also contacted by individuals who have done their own research and are interested in the treatment for themselves or a family member. She says typically the patients she sees for ketamine treatments have been dealing with mental health issues for a very long time. For some, it is almost the last resort. The infusion treatments are offered as an add-on treatment, which means it can be done in conjunction with traditional mental health treatments like regular medications and therapy. The cost for the infusions are out-of-pocket for patients. Dr. Wong recommends the infusion schedule tested and reviewed by the National Institute of Health, which consists of six initial infusions followed by booster infusions as needed. And while the infusions can be given as a stand-alone treatment, she highly recommends that patients CONTINUED >

continue seeing their regular therapists or try psychotherapy again while receiving ketamine treatments, even if they have not had success with therapy in the past. She says that is because ketamine has been studied for its effect on neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and form new neural connections. “Some of mental illness is being stuck in a way of thinking. This (treatment) invites a new space so that the patient can know their own efficacy and power,“ she says. Dr. Wong says ideally, there’s a whole team in place to support the patient. But she says every patient is different in their approach to mental health and they honor all paths of the individuals. “As a psychiatric practice, we bring something else to our treatments. We bring more understanding and a more supportive environment,” she says. As part of the treatments, Dr. Wong’s clinic tracks their patient’s symptoms of depression and anxiety to see how the ketamine treatments affect them emotionally. But along with the reduction of what they call bad indicators, the team also likes seeing new indicators of growth. She says the real gain is seeing the patient start to flourish in new ways, such as going out and trying new things or developing new healthy patterns that they did not have before. Dr. Wong says after the initial course of treatments, about half of her patients return for periodic booster treatments. But, like all aspects of mental health treatment, results can vary greatly from patient to patient. “Every person is dealing with their own story. So each person is different in their healing process,” she says. Those wanting more information about the treatments should visit www.bridges2wellbeing. com. Prospective patients or family members are also encouraged to call the office with any questions.

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.
2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.
3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.
4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
