As the summer sun beckons and wanderlust begins to stir, we welcome you to our July Travel Issue—a celebration of exploration, adventure, and the incredible connections that come when we step outside our everyday lives. Travel has long been associated with rest and rejuvenation, and rightfully so. There’s something deeply healing about sinking your toes into a new shore, savoring unfamiliar flavors, or watching the sunset from a place you’ve never been. But beyond the comfort of five-star resorts or secluded villas lies something even more valuable: perspective. In an increasingly globalized world, travel offers us one of the few remaining ways to truly step outside our bubble. It allows us to immerse ourselves in the vibrant diversity of human experience—to learn, not just from books or screens, but from people. Whether you’re walking through a centuries-old market, sharing a meal in a remote village, or listening to the rhythm of a language you don’t speak, travel reminds us that there are countless ways to live a beautiful life. In a time when the world feels both vast and more connected than ever, understanding the cultures, customs, and values of others isn’t just enriching—it’s essential. Global interconnectivity means that our actions, economies, and ideas are constantly influencing one another. When we take time to experience life through someone else’s lens, we not only deepen our empathy, but we also gain insight into how intricately our lives are intertwined. Exposure to other cultures cultivates open-mindedness, fuels innovation, and fosters a greater appreciation for both the uniqueness and the common threads that connect us all. At City Lifestyle, we believe that luxury isn’t only defined by what you experience but by how deeply you experience it. True luxury is cultural curiosity, the willingness to engage, to learn, and to be changed by the world around us. Whether your passport is freshly stamped or you're simply dreaming from the coffee table, we invite you to see the world through a wider lens. The world is waiting to teach us, if only we’re willing to listen. Here's to travel that opens your heart as much as it opens your itinerary. A CURE FOR THE OVERWHELMED ITINERARY BUILDER

The Traveling TORO Gives Expert Advice for Your Next Trip ARTICLE BY TRAVIS HAGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADELINE MERRICK: MERRICK MULTIMEDIA

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TRAV E L

Ask anyone who’s spent a weekend scrolling through an endless parade of TripAdvisor reviews or comparing hotel photos across six browser tabs: travel planning has become a part-time job. And frankly, it’s not always a pleasant one. The volume of options in today’s digital world is often paralyzing. But a good travel advisor—much like a trusted tailor or a revered maître d’—doesn’t deal in guesses. They deal in certainty. “An advisor’s role is to distill thousands of options into the one itinerary that feels like it was designed just for you—mainly because it was,” says Steve Torres of The Traveling TORO. They know which château in the Loire Valley still hand-presses olive oil on-site, and which all-inclusive in Tulum is more tequila shot than tranquil retreat. They distill the chaos into clarity and give you back something most precious: time.

PERKS, PRIVILEGES, AND THE POWER OF CONNECTION

When you book with a reputable advisor, you’re not just getting a reservation—you’re tapping a network. Think private car transfers in Florence, priority restaurant reservations in Charleston, or a complimentary upgrade at that secluded alpine lodge you’ve been eyeing. “Booking online gets you a room. Booking through a travel advisor will many times get you additional benefits and someone waiting to greet you by name,” says Torres. “That’s the difference between booking with access, not just availability. That personal touch and connection goes a long way for your behalf. Having worked in hotels for many years, I will tell you there is a ‘pecking order’ when it comes to how a booking was made.” CONTINUED >

BUT THAT IT UNFOLDS AS YOU IMAGINED IT.”

TO MAKE SURE YOUR JOURNEY DOESN’T JUST HAPPEN—

“ONE OF OUR MAIN FOCUSES IS TO PROTECT THAT MAGIC— 22

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TRAV E L

WHEN THINGS GO SIDEWAYS, THEY STEP FORWARD

As Texans, we’re no strangers to a sudden storm on the horizon. Likewise, in travel, even the best-laid plans can unravel with alarming speed. A canceled flight in Heathrow. A rail strike in Italy. In such moments, there’s a vast difference between waiting on hold with a chatbot and texting your travel advisor, who already has a Plan B. These professionals act as your advocate, your fixer, your calm in the storm. They don’t just rearrange

plans—they preserve experiences, protect investments, and often before you know there’s trouble afoot.

TIME IS LUXURY—SPEND IT WISELY

A beautifully planned trip is a symphony. Booking every leg of a multi-stop itinerary—especially when navigating foreign currencies, language barriers, or seasonal blackouts—can take days. A travel advisor handles it all with efficiency and a dash of finesse.

MORE AFFORDABLE THAN YOU’D IMAGINE

There’s a common misconception that travel advisors are only for the rich or the royally inclined. Truth is, many don’t charge planning fees at all—especially when booking hotels, cruises, or curated travel packages. When they do, the added value often outweighs the cost tenfold in perks, upgrades, and peace of mind. “People assume luxury means expensive,” says Torres. “However, when you layer in perks, upgrades, and time saved, working with a professional is one of the smartest financial moves you can make.” Smart money knows that expertise pays for itself—and then some.

TRAVEL IS A HUMAN ENDEAVOR

Travel has always been more than movement. It’s a tactile, emotional, and deeply human pursuit. In 2025, amid the algorithms and automation, the human touch matters more than ever. A good travel advisor won’t just book your trip—they’ll elevate it, enrich it, and ensure it unfolds as smoothly as the tide rolling in on a quiet Gulf shore. “One of our main focuses is to protect that magic—to make sure your journey doesn’t just happen—but that it unfolds as you imagined it.” The next time the road calls, consider turning to a travel professional. Not because you can’t do it yourself, but because you deserve not to. Contact Steve directly at 650-644-7987 to schedule your next itinerary.

Pop-Tops, Flat Tires, and Fine Print Why You Still Need Travel Insurance You’ve mapped the route to Rosemary Beach, loaded up the Tahoe, and stocked the cooler with Topo Chico. The playlist is heavy on Buffett and the only thing left to do is coast until your toes hit sand. Before you slide on those shades and embrace your inner beachcomber, it’s worth asking: what happens if something goes wrong? We Texans pride ourselves on being prepared—from roadside kits to brisket rubs. But one thing even the most seasoned Texan often overlooks is travel insurance. Having the right coverage might be the best travel companion you bring—right after your flip-flops.

YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE MAY NOT TRAVEL AS WELL AS YOU DO

The biggest misconception about domestic travel is that your health insurance follows you without limits. In reality, many plans—especially HMOs and EPOs—work best within your home network. Even PPOs, which offer more flexibility, can leave you holding the bill if you end up at an out-of-network Urgent Care. And while emergency room visits are often covered, the fine print matters. Deductibles may reset, copays spike, and surprise billing is very much alive and well. Cherie Jones, a licensed insurance agent with US Health Group, knows how fast things can go sideways on a beach trip. “I’ve seen people assume they’re covered, only to find out

ARTICLE BY TRAVIS HAGER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CHERIE JONES

26

EXP E RT H E LP | P RO FES SION AL SE RVICE S

the hard way that their insurance stops at the state line,” she explains. “It doesn’t take much—twist your ankle on a pop-top and suddenly you’re facing hundreds or thousands in out-of-pocket costs.” The better option? A short-term domestic travel health policy that bridges the gaps. Think of it as sunscreen for your finances—easy to forget, but painful when you need it and don’t have it.

RENTAL CARS AND ROADSIDE SURPRISES

Nothing ruins a Jimmy Buffett moment like a fender bender in a borrowed car. Whether you’re renting in Florida or driving your own, coverage for roadside mishaps should be more than a second thought. Many credit cards offer collision damage waivers, but they don’t always provide full coverage—and few include liability. If you’re not sure what your personal auto policy covers outside Texas, it’s worth a call. Peace of mind pairs well with palm trees.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

Perhaps the most overlooked benefit of domestic travel insurance is emergency support. A serious illness, injury, or sudden family crisis could require a hospital transfer or last-minute trip home. Some policies include emergency medical transport, even within the U.S.—especially helpful if you’re in a rural area with limited facilities. It may not feel as dramatic as being airlifted from the Alps, but trying to coordinate ground transport or a specialized facility in another state can be just as overwhelming—and expensive.

THE SMART MIX

A little preparation goes a long way. Travel insurance isn’t about living in fear, it’s about allowing yourself to relax once the trip begins. Like extra

lime in your margarita, it’s one of those things you’re glad to have when the moment calls for it. So before you head east on that long-awaited escape—whether it’s Seaside, Sarasota, or somewhere off the beaten path—take a few minutes to consider the coverage that travels with you. In the wise words of Mr. Buffett, “If life gives you limes, make margaritas.” Just make sure your blender is covered.

D E C OR T R E N D S | HO M E + D E SIGN

When Ariel Merk first set foot in an airpark, she wasn’t looking for inspiration—she was helping build an office with her husband. But something unexpected happened: she fell in love with the aviation lifestyle. That spark of passion would eventually lead to the creation of Aeroview Design, a trailblazing interior design firm redefining what it means to create luxury spaces within private aircraft hangars. “Design found me early—but aviation became part of my story when we built at an airpark,” Ariel shares. “I saw a gap in luxury design for pilots—and knew I could fill it.” Today, Ariel travels across the country to design personalized, one-of-a-kind hangar spaces for clients who choose to live at their airparks or want a private retreat where they can relax and unwind. Her designs are anything but utilitarian. Each one is an emotional experience— an intentional space that blends form and function with a deep sense of identity. She realized the impact of her work early on when her first aviation client was moved to tears at the reveal. “She said, ‘This finally feels like me.’ That was the moment I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be.” Inspired by purposeful beauty— Yahweh’s creation, boutique hotels, and bold women who design their lives with intention—Ariel merges aesthetics with meaning. Her husband's journey as a student pilot and their weekend adventures in the air continue to fuel her creative vision. Even visits to remote airstrips in the Southwest have helped shape her calm, grounded design ethos.

Translating luxury into a hangar space requires nuance. “Luxury is in the layers,” Ariel says. “Tailored textures, intentional lighting, and seamless flow between function and feeling.” Every project begins with deep listening. From there, she weaves together the client's lifestyle, aviation habits, and design sensibility to craft a cohesive, elevated space. One element she never compromises on is comfort. “A lounge that invites you to stay—every hangar deserves a space that feels like a retreat.” Aeroview’s interiors often blend hospitality-level comfort with aviation technology—smart storage, thoughtful sightlines, and tactile warmth. In one memorable project, a pilot requested a vintage cigar lounge feel, complete with brass accents and hidden compartments. Another client’s hangar featured a full bar, private theater, and a custom bourbon wall. “The plane was just one part of the story,” Ariel says, smiling. Her clients are often high-net-worth individuals with specific, refined tastes, and Ariel excels in translating their visions into bold, livable spaces. “I listen deeply, then translate their lifestyle into design. They want expert leadership and personal storytelling.” She draws from trends in boutique hotels and luxury homes—statement lighting, mood-driven color palettes, and tactile materials—to ensure every detail contributes to the overall experience. “I stay ahead by being in it,” she explains. “I blend insights from aviation, luxury living, and global design.” CONTINUED >

For Ariel, travel is more than just a perk of the job—it’s central to her philosophy. “Luxury is now about ease and intention—designing a life you don’t need a vacation from.” Her travel essentials reflect her focus on beauty and comfort: a journal, silk eye mask, and cashmere wrap. If she could design a hangar just for herself, it would sit on a cliff in Montana, clad in black steel and stone, with soft leather interiors, a personal studio, spa, and sweeping views of the runway. “That would be my ultimate retreat,” she says. As private aviation becomes more lifestyle-driven, Ariel sees hangars evolving into hybrid spaces—equal parts living, entertaining, and aviation. She’s already working on a custom home that includes an attached hangar and pool house, which she calls the ultimate blend of “luxury, lifestyle, and lift.” She’s also setting her sights on adjacent spaces, such as superyachts and off-grid luxury retreats accessible by air. “Anywhere lifestyle and design intersect—I want to be there,” she says. MEET PEARL RUSSELL

ARTICLE BY ANGI BURNS

Pearl Russell is a true connector in the Rockwall community, known for her generous spirit and infectious energy. As the owner of Pearl Acupuncture in both Rockwall and Richardson, she follows in the footsteps of her maternal grandmother, combining healing with heritage. Pearl has a natural gift for bringing people together—particularly women—for joyful, meaningful connection. One of her latest endeavors, the Rockwall Mahjong Club, brings 8 to 20 women together monthly to learn and enjoy the game while celebrating Pearl’s Chinese heritage. She thoughtfully selects local favorites like the new 501 Yacht Club and Sear Steakhouse at the Harbor to host these gatherings, supporting fellow small businesses along the way. Pearl’s passion for community and culture makes her a beacon of positivity and a cherished friend to many. Her commitment to fostering connection and fun makes her a shining example of a good human doing great things.
