LIFESTYLE LETTER

Fill Your Cup

January 2026 PUBLISHER

As we step into a brand-new year, I’m reminded of a truth we often acknowledge but rarely prioritize: you cannot pour from an empty cup. In the rush of daily responsibilities, family, career, community, and the constant demands of a fast-moving world, it’s easy to overlook our own needs. Yet our personal, professional, and financial success all flow from the same source: our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. January offers us a fresh start, a natural invitation to pause, reset, and intentionally care for ourselves. True wellness is not just about gym memberships or green smoothies (though those help!). It is the holistic alignment of mind, body, and spirit. It is carving out space to breathe, think, and reconnect. It is strengthening our bodies so we feel good in our daily lives. It is protecting our peace and nurturing relationships with the people we love most. Just as we tune in to our personal health, it is also time to check in on our digital health. Technology is evolving at lightning speed, and with the rise of AI-driven scams and increasingly sophisticated online fraud, staying informed and vigilant is no longer optional. It is essential. Updating passwords, enabling multifactor authentication, and having honest conversations with loved ones about digital safety are all part of modern wellness. When our technology is secure, our families, finances, and peace of mind are protected. This month’s issue celebrates the full spectrum of health and wellness because thriving in today’s world means tending to every part of who we are. You will meet local experts, businesses, and neighbors who are dedicated to helping our community feel stronger, live safely, and welcome the new year with renewed energy. As you read through these pages, I hope you are inspired to give yourself the gift of restoration. Schedule that check-up, take that walk, unplug for an afternoon, treat yourself with grace, and remember that caring for yourself is not selfish. It is foundational. When your cup is full, you show up better for your family, your work, and your community. Here’s to a year of health, clarity, strength, and intentional living. May 2026 be your most rejuvenating year yet. With Gratitude,

HEAL- CORP Heal-Corp, a rapidly growing nonprofit based inTexas and Florida, has built its reputation on a simple but powerful mission: to bring specialized support, compassion, and capability to communities facing crisis. What began as a small group of disaster-response volunteers has evolved into an organization known for its close collaboration with state agencies and its unique, multi-layered approach to emergency operations. Heal-Corp stands out for the breadth of its search-and-rescue capabilities. The organization fields certified K9 search teams, a trained mule team for access to remote or debris-blocked terrain, a rapidly expanding drone division providing thermal imaging and aerial mapping, and a dive team prepared for water-based searches and recoveries. These assets work in combination, allowing the organization to assist state agencies during complex, multiday search operations across a wide variety of environments. In addition to its rescue teams, Heal-Corp possesses strong medical capabilities led by experienced disaster physicians and trained medical personnel. The organization is able to deploy rapidly, establish medical trailers and field tents, and begin providing care almost immediately— whether in the aftermath of a natural disaster or in support of underserved communities in need of essential services. G IV IN G BAC K | L I FE + C ULT U RE

These combined capacities proved invaluable during one of the largest operations in Heal-Corp’s history: the devastating floods in Central Texas last year. Entire neighborhoods in Kerr County were submerged, families displaced, and multiple individuals reported missing. Heal-Corp mobilized nearly 100 volunteers and deployed its K9 units, drones, mule team, boats, medical staff, and dive personnel. Working closely with state agencies, the team assisted in search operations, maintained equipment in harsh, muddy terrain, and supported affected families throughout the multiday response. The mission highlighted Heal-Corp’s ability not only to respond quickly but also to adapt its diverse resources to rapidly changing conditions. Today, Heal-Corp continues expanding its impact beyond emergency response. The organization has launched a new

humanitarian initiative in Jamaica following severe storm damage that left families without access to medical supplies, food, and safe community spaces. Heal-Corp is preparing shipments of essential items to support roof repairs for a local congregation that serves as a critical pillar of the community. The organization is seeking ongoing support to help move these efforts forward and restore stability to the hardest-hit areas. As Heal-Corp grows, so does its ability to serve. Through partnerships with state agencies, specialized rescue teams, and committed medical professionals, the organization remains dedicated to strengthening community resilience. Heal-Corp is currently working to outfit their dive team trailer. Contribute by visiting www.heal-corp.org/donate/.

At first glance, your mouth and your muscles might not seem connected. But as the doctors at Fisher & Zitterich Dentistry explain, what’s happening in your smile often mirrors what’s happening in your body. From energy and recovery to inflammation and immunity, oral health plays a powerful role in your overall wellness. “Your mouth is the gateway to your body,” says Dr. Marisa Zitterich. “Everything that happens there can influence your overall health. Bacteria from gum disease or infections don’t just stay put. They can travel through your bloodstream and contribute to inflammation throughout your body.” That inflammation, the doctors agree, can have far-reaching effects. Chronic oral infections like gum disease create low-grade inflammation that forces your immune system to stay on alert. “When your immune system is constantly under stress, you feel it,” adds Dr. Michael Fisher. “You might feel more fatigued, recover slower after exercise, and even notice your endurance isn’t what it used to be. A healthy mouth helps your body perform at its best.”

THE INFLAMMATION CONNECTION

Inflammation is your body’s natural defense, but when it lingers, it does more harm than good. “When gums are inflamed, your body reacts the same way it would to an infection anywhere else, by triggering an immune response,” explains Dr. Monica Fisher. “Over time, this can increase your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. It’s simple: calm gums mean a calmer body.” "Oral health isn’t just about teeth; it’s a vital piece of overall wellness," says Dr. Salma Haneef. “Sometimes, the mouth gives us early clues that something else in the body needs attention. Persistent bad breath, bleeding gums, or dryness can all be signs worth checking.”

HOW YOUR SMILE FUELS YOUR FITNESS

The connection between oral health and physical fitness goes deeper than many realize. When your gums are healthy and free of infection, your body doesn’t have to divert extra energy to fight inflammation. “Many athletes don’t realize that oral health directly affects how they feel and perform,” says Zitterich. “If your mouth is fighting an infection, your immune system is working overtime. You may feel more tired, slower to bounce back after workouts, or just generally run-down.” For people who live active lifestyles, paying attention to dental habits is especially important. “Sports drinks are one of the biggest culprits we see,” notes Dr. Monica Fisher. “They’re often high in sugar and citric acid, which can erode enamel and fuel cavities. Combine that with mouth breathing during workouts, which causes dryness and bacterial growth, and you’ve got a recipe for trouble.” The solution? Hydrate with water, brush after workouts, and use a mouthguard for contact sports. “Simple adjustments make a big difference,” says Dr. Monica Fisher. “Your smile deserves as much attention as your workout routine.”

NUTRITION, HYDRATION, AND YOUR SMILE

Good nutrition and hydration are key for both oral and overall health. “Saliva is one of your body’s best defenses,” explains Dr. Haneef. “It washes away food particles, neutralizes acids, and helps protect your enamel. Staying hydrated keeps that system working properly.” Diet plays its part too. “Diets high in sugar or lacking in essential vitamins take a toll on gums and enamel,” says Zitterich. “Whether you’re keto, vegan, or training for a marathon, balance is everything. Teeth and body both thrive on nutrient-rich, whole foods.” CONTINUED >

“Oral health is whole-body health. Your smile tells a bigger story than you might think. When your mouth is healthy, your body performs better, feels better, and recovers faster.” JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / R O C KWA L L

HABITS THAT LAST

The foundation of total wellness often begins with the simplest daily habits. “Brush twice a day, floss daily, and drink plenty of water,” advises Dr. Michael Fisher. “Limit sugary and acidic drinks, eat balanced meals, get consistent sleep, and manage stress. Your immune system, and your gums, benefit from those routines.” Regular dental visits are an essential part of prevention. They’re also an opportunity for your dental healthcare provider to spot early signs of broader health issues. “We recommend visiting us at least twice a year for your cleaning and checkup,” says Dr. Monica Fisher. “But for patients who are highly active, have gum concerns, or are managing other health conditions, more frequent cleanings can make a real difference.”

MORE THAN JUST A SMILE

The doctors at Fisher & Zitterich Dentistry share a simple truth: oral health is whole-body health. “Your smile tells a bigger story than you might think,” says Dr. Haneef. “When your mouth is healthy, your body performs better, feels better, and recovers faster.” Instead of treating dental visits as an isolated chore, patients should recognize them as an integral part of overall wellness, just as important as regular workouts or balanced nutrition. So, as you plan your health goals for the coming year, don’t forget the foundation that starts with your smile. Whether you’re training for a 10K or simply aiming to feel your best, keeping up with your dental care can make all the difference. After all, wellness begins with confidence...and few things inspire that quite like a strong, healthy smile.

L E A R N M O R E : A local family-owned practice, the doctors at Fisher & Zitterich Dentistry excel in transformative dental care. Call 972-771-4000 or schedule online at https://fzdentistry.com/ to keep your smile strong, bright, and ready for the new year.

NAVIGATING THE COMPLEXITIES OF Healthcare Insurance

SEEKING A HOMETOWN EXPERT CAN PUT YOU AT EASE ARTICLE BY FATIMA DURRANI | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CHERIE JONES

22

EXP E RT H E LP | P RO FES SION AL SE RVICE S

Never before has navigating the healthcare market been so complex, especially with recent rumors of increasing premiums and slashes to government funding for healthcare. Understanding insurance benefits is like speaking a new language. What’s a subsidy? What’s cost-sharing? What does a small-group broker do? Not all of us are equally primed to learn this kind of terminology. Amongst all the hype, there is also the glaring issue of separating truth from falsehood. Can you still qualify for health insurance if you have preexisting conditions? Are government-backed plans like Health Insurance Marketplace or Obamacare your only choices if you don’t have employer-sponsored health insurance? What if your spouse has a health issue but you carry the family’s health insurance and have been laid off? Insurance benefits is one area where going to an expert makes sense. It can make the difference between high premiums or low ones, and large networks of doctors (PPO) to choose from or limited ones (HMO). Your personal circumstances, including your type of work and health history, can determine your choices when it comes to insurance policies. CONTINUED >

JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / R O C KWA L L

23

“Most people don’t realize they have options,” states Cherie Jones, Your Local Health Insurance Agent, who offers medically underwritten plans year-round. “What if your care is tied up with your current doctor, but that doctor won’t be participating in your network next year? Or you need to travel for work, or even relocate, and need your insurance benefits to extend nationally? There are just so many ways this can play out.” Deconstructing the complexities of insurance jargon is one thing; purchasing an appropriate insurance plan is another. “For example, the good news is that individuals can certainly obtain health insurance with preexisting conditions. Oftentimes, dental and accidental coverages may be added on. The main disadvantage here is that with marketplace options, you have to wait until open enrollment season (which occurs typically during November-December) or for a life-changing event like marriage, divorce, birth of a child, loss of coverage, or a move,” she explains. Educating consumers on misleading insurance offerings, which are abundant, is another piece of the puzzle. “Companies have bought domain names to generate leads, then reach out to vulnerable populations through cold calling,” says Cherie. “They confuse people on what’s legit and what’s not. My hope is that I can get to people before they get scammed. ‘Zero deductible’ and ‘plan pays first’ are words that should raise red flags. Anybody can be an imposter and ‘sell’ you policies.

“Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who care more about a commission than about you. That’s where I try not to be that person and surround myself with resources who can help when I can’t. When you’re a local agent, you can be held accountable; but if you’re on the phone with a stranger in a distant state, you can’t,” she continues. This is why fact-checking is crucial in the insurance universe. For example, pinpointing the origin of an error in your billing statement can take hours of research, not to mention chasing down the culprit (was it the doctor’s office or the insurance company?). Another widely held rumor that deserves clarification is that currently there is no such thing as “Trumpcare”—it’s just spam to grab your attention and your personal information. Yet another misconception in people’s minds revolves around c o m p a n y-p r ov i d e d continuing benefits like COBRA or state continuation and whether or not it extends to your family. In most cases, it does. While COBRA may be more expensive for older people than younger folks, the exact wording of your policy is what will ultimately dictate your costs and benefits. Inspired by her parents, both former health insurance agents, Cherie has been helping the community understand industry trends and subsequent adjustments in insurance costs for over 10 years. In these changing times, it’s good to know that peace of mind is still accessible.

“Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who care more about a commission than about you”

How Somatic Movement and Dance Movement Therapy Support Whole-Person Well-Being I didn’t just discover somatic movement in a dance studio. I found it years into performing, during a period when stress felt louder than my own thoughts. As someone who grew up expressing myself through performing, I understood movement as art, yet I had never understood movement as communication. Of course, your body is the most accessible and useful tool that you have. That realization eventually led me into the study of somatic and dance/movement therapy, and today I am an emerging dance scientist completing my Bachelor of Science in Dance Science at Elon University. Through my work, I have seen how profoundly the body can speak when we learn how to listen. Somatic movement and dance movement therapy (DMT) are not about learning choreography or performing. They are about reconnecting to the body as a source of clarity and emotional regulation—something everyone can benefit from, regardless of age, background, fitness level, or experience.

WHAT IS SOMATIC MOVEMENT AND DMT?

Somatic simply means “of the body.” Somatic movement focuses on noticing physical sensations like breath, tension, posture, and rhythm to move with awareness rather than expectation. Think of it as a connection between your mind, body, and spirit. Dance/movement therapy is a form of clinical psychopathology that uses movement to support emotional, cognitive, physical, and social integration. In DMT, movement becomes a therapeutic tool much like a language. People often express through the body what they cannot yet express through words.

26

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | ARTS + CU LT U RE

THE SCIENCE, SIMPLIFIED

The body and mind are not separate. Movement directly influences the nervous system, helping regulate stress responses, reduce cortisol, and create a sense of grounding. When we move, we activate neural pathways that link emotional centers of the brain with areas responsible for logic, decision-making, and self-awareness. This is often called integration, and it is essential for emotional well-being. Somatic practices also help interrupt the body’s tendency to store stress physically through tightness in the chest, shallow breathing, or tension in the shoulders. Research shows that intentional, sensory-based movement supports greater resilience, clearer thinking, and improved mood. When your body feels regulated, your mind can follow.

WHO BENEFITS? (HINT: EVERYONE)

One of the biggest misconceptions about somatic movement or DMT is that it’s “just for dancers” or is performative. In reality, there is no right or wrong, no scoring and no judgement. If you can breathe, shift your weight, or way side to side, you can participate. These practices support: • Stress, anxiety, and burnout in adults and professionals • Trauma survivors, helping rebuild a sense of safety • Individuals with Parkinson’s disease, where research shows improved mobility and emotional regulation • Cancer patients, supporting both physical and psychological recovery • Children, using movement as a form of play therapy Movement is universal. It belongs to everyone.

“People often express through the body what they cannot yet express through words.” CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / R O C KWA L L

27

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE DAY-TO-DAY

Somatic movement can be incredibly simple. A somatic stretch might involve slowing down long enough to notice where you’re tense, then gently releasing that area through breath and micro-movements. A mindful walk might mean feeling your feet connect with the ground, observing the way your arms naturally swing, or noticing the temperature of the air on your skin. Even swaying side to side, rocking forward and back, or placing a hand on the chest to feel your breath can shift your nervous system into a more regulated state. These small movements become daily rituals or micro-interventions that bring you back to your body when your mind feels loud.

FINDING SUPPORT

If you’re interested in exploring DMT, the American Dance Therapy Association provides a directory of board-certified dance/movement therapists across the country. Somatic movement educators can also be found in wellness centers, studios, and therapeutic spaces. In my own work, I offer private and group somatic movement sessions rooted in science-backed principles, and I share these practices through The Art of Coping, a nonprofit that supports children and teens in healing from trauma. My mission is simple: to make movement feel accessible, grounded, and transformative for every body.

The New Frontier of Health U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED

AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.

“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive selfcriticism to continuously raise the standard of care.” To hear the extended conversation with Dr. Kyle Gillett, scan the QR code for an exclusive podcast episode.

Values

Health

Is the most important key to living a full and healthy life hiding from you? There are many factors to consider when thinking about what constitutes health. The food we eat, exercise, environmental influences, our emotions, and our spiritual awareness are all pillars of health. However, there is one factor that tops the list which often goes unspoken; living in alignment with your value system. Defining values helps a person to structure their life based on personal belief systems by determining what is most meaningful and important to them. From there, a sense of purpose is derived and defined values become tenets from which to live. There are plentiful examples of values, and they vary from person to person. Some examples of values include family, humility, benevolence, leadership, kindness, independence, creativity, and adventure. Our emotions serve to guide us to understanding whether our actions are in alignment with our values. When we live incongruently with our value system, we are betraying ourselves and delivering a subconscious message that we do not matter. Emotions that can come from not living in accordance with our values are based in fear and include anxiety, depression, anger, resentment, and jealousy. Living from a place of fear tends

to foster bad habits such as addictive behavior, poor dietary choices, negative sleep habits, and unhealthy relationships. Physiologically, the natural flow of energy in the body becomes stuck, wreaking havoc in the body physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. From there, symptoms and illness ensue. However, when we love and respect ourselves enough, we will spend our time and energy according to our values and emotions where love becomes more prevalent. Those emotions include gratitude, joy, peace, comfort, connection, trust, and happiness. Living from love leads to a desire, willingness and commitment to engage in activities that fulfill our sense of purpose. By doing so, our body’s energy moves with ease. When our energy flows freely, we feel vital, healthy, purposeful, and joyful. Identifying our values becomes easier when we create space in our lives to understand what brings us meaning in life. Here are five steps to create space to aid in identifying your values:

5. Speak your values out loud

1. Grounding/Earthing I have experienced it myself and I hear so many others share a similar experience, that being in nature is healing. Getting our hands into the earth with gardening, walking along the beach, taking a hike, or even lying in the grass brings an almost indescribable sense of well-being. Connecting with the earth’s electrical charge is thought to aid in pain reduction, modulate the immune system, and reduce inflammation. It also can lead to feeling more centered, allowing us to focus on what is most important to us.

2. Meditation/prayer Setting your intentions in quiet solitude using meditation or prayer provides clarity. Meditation may seem overwhelming, but you can make it simple by not expecting perfection in the process. I suggest finding guided meditations online that grab your attention. Try various guided meditations until you find one that feels right.

3. Exercise In addition to the more obvious benefits of exercise, it temporarily unblocks stagnation thereby creating space for objectivity.

4. Journaling Getting thoughts on paper helps clarify intentions.

There are many benefits to literally speaking our truths and discussing our values out loud with a trusted confidant. Bouncing ideas and having meaningful discussions can help us determine our framework and organize our thinking. Sometimes friends and family may not provide the most objective perspectives and professional counseling or life coaching may be more appropriate, while at other times a friend or family member is the most perfect fit! When we live in alignment with our values, we are honoring ourselves in the most self-loving way. From there, our vibrancy shines to our loved ones, our neighbors and even strangers we see out and about. It becomes not only the best gift you can give yourself, but that of our community. So cheers to 2026, let’s make this the best year yet!
