A very special thank you to the community.

Dear Reader,

As the warm winds of summer give way to the crisp colors of September, I am filled with gratitude and excitement to connect with you through this letter.

Since 2008, our journey at Talulah Belle has been remarkable, due to the unwavering support of our cherished community. Your trust and loyalty have allowed us to evolve from a thoughtful gift shop for all occasions to a haven of elegant home goods, now that we are nestled in our beautiful new space at 314  Main Street.

Rochester has always been more than just a location; it is the heart of our story. The bustling Main Street events, the lively art fairs in the park, and the enchanting Farmers’ Market have all contributed to the tapestry of our shared experiences. These moments, brimming with friendly faces and community spirit, have been the backdrop to our growth and evolution. Our journey has been one of continuous transformation, much like the seasons that grace our beloved Michigan.

Talulah Belle will always be your go-to shop for gifts and special occasions, a place where you can find the perfect token to celebrate life’s memorable moments. However, we have also evolved into a design resource center, catering to those who wish to refresh their homes with beautiful touches like new pillows, furniture, and fresh decor. And we are excited to act as a resource for our local interior designers seeking the perfect finishing pieces for installations.

As we embrace the spirit of September, we invite you to join us in celebrating the beauty of connection and the joy of Beautiful Giving, Modern Living. Our curated collection of home goods and gifts is a reflection of our commitment to bringing elegance and charm into your lives. Whether you’re looking to adorn your home with timeless pieces or seeking the perfect gift to create lasting memories, we are here to make every moment special.

Thank you for being an integral part of our journey. Your support and enthusiasm have been the driving force behind our evolution. We look forward to continuing this beautiful journey together, coming together in shared moments, cherished memories and beautiful products.

of Fashion The Art

FASHION IS NOT SIMPLY ABOUT WHAT WE CHOOSE TO WEAR. IT’S HOW WE TELL THE WORLD WHO WE ARE WITHOUT SAYING A WORD.

Dress provided by Hello Fancy Boutique / Jewelry by Rochester Salvage + Supply / Model; Alie Asher

When we set out to create an issue surrounding art + fashion, we knew immediately that we wanted to do more than choose a few outfits to highlight. With a team full of creatives, writers, photographers, artists, and dancers, we quickly began brainstorming what our “dream” feature would look like.  Well, let me tell you, we are in AWE of what we were able to capture in this issue with the help of our friends, neighbors and fellow local business owners.  We truly could have not done it without all of you.

There are a lot of arguments as to when “fashion” as we know it really came to be a part of our lives.  Clothing can be traced back to the beginning of mankind itself, initially serving the simple purpose of protecting our bodies.  Many years later, society began to form a desire to express its prestige through expensive clothing, but also followed certain trends of its time. At first it was the Kings + Queens who flaunted their fashion, later it was the only the wealthy that could afford exclusive fashion, such as haute couture. Today fashion is incredibly diverse, but also very fast moving, much like life.

What’s fascinating about fashion, is that it also acts as a reflection of a specific time frame.  In the course of history, 100 years isn’t a particularly long time. But in the course of  fashion  history, it’s the difference between trying to get around in a girdle and ankle-length skirt and easing into the athleisure and sneakers you see everywhere today. In the past century, there have been major shifts in technology, politics, culture, and social norms, and fashion has reflected that in its ever-changing cycle of trends. From the high-waisted bikini of the ‘40’s the miniskirt of the ‘60s, the bell bottoms and platforms of the ‘70s, the leggings and fingerless gloves of the ‘80’s, or the supermodel minimal look of the ‘90’s, we see so many of the popular looks of decades past serving as inspiration for designers today.  As the mother of a teenager, I often find myself stopping and holding up clothing in my daughter’s favorite stores, bringing back memories of owning the very same tank top as a teenage girl in the ‘90’s.  I always remember women older than me commenting on my bell bottoms when they came back into style thinking they had no idea what they were talking about because obviously our generation had the best fashion ideas.  It’s a funny thing how history repeats itself in cycles, and it’s even more interesting to witness it in real time being able to look back on outfits fondly, placing myself into a memory simply by recalling what I wore that night.

“Style is one of the easiest ways  for us to show the world how we want to be seen.”

While we can’t deny that fashion in our social-media-driven world is often dictated by what trend the latest influencer dubs as popular. Think “clean girl aesthetic” or “Diane Keaton summer”, we can find a little reassurance in knowing that those who truly love the world of fashion know that “trends” will come and go, but true style is something can’t be taught or duplicated.  It’s one of the easiest ways for us to express ourselves, lean into our creativity, paint a picture with our clothing and show the world who we are, and how we want to be “seen”.

When I think of people who I see as fashion icons, a range of people pop into my mind.  There is of course the legend Iris Apfel who spent her life in fashion teaching us more is more, Diane Von Furstenberg who used fashion to give women power, or Tracy Reese, a Detroit native known for dressing Michelle Obama who has recently shifted gears to embrace the slow fashion movement while also fighting for social changes.

Fashion is so much more than fabric.  Fashion is the snapshot of a period in history, it is an opportunity to make a statement, fashion is something that can be repurposed and handed down from generation to generation in order to breathe new life into it.  The art of fashion is so much more than dressing well, the art of fashion is the art of self-expression.  Next time you’re feeling like you’re in a rut, put on that favorite outfit.  What are you saving it for, anyway?

A VERY  special thank you to South Street Skateshop, Rochester Salvage + Supply, Hello Fancy Boutique, BeScene, SEE Eyewear, Bellissima Bridal, Studio Em & Lu, Courtney Nicole, Sarah Aezer, Alan Salazar and Lane McLeod for collaborating with us, loaning us beautiful pieces and helping us style our models.   We’re so lucky to be supported by such amazing local businesses.

To our dancers...Dayna Marshall, Raegan King, Maddy Petz, Alie Asher, Giana Vermiglio and Matt Warner.  You truly made this vision come to life in the most beautiful way possible.  We could not have done this without you being so willing to share your gift of dance + movement.

HOUSE LOVE

Navigating the world of Real Estate with Trisha Mell

If you’ve been on the Paint Creek trail recently, you’ve most likely seen Trisha Mell run by.  That’s probably because when she’s not helping people find their dream homes, she’s usually training for a Marathon. (S he’s currently training for two, making them her 16th and 17th - no big deal.)

Trisha has called the Rochester area home, since graduating from MSU, where she began her career working in the advertising industry.  After a few years in advertising, Trisha felt a pull to move into Real Estate. She obtained her license in 2013 and spent the next several years working with local brokerages learning, building relationships and making a name for herself in the Rochester area.  Two years ago, she found a home at Arterra, where she has been for the past two years.

For Trisha, the most important thing to her is her relationships.  That’s why she believes that offering her clients a home-buying experience that focuses on hospitality is what truly drives her success.  Although finding her client their new home is always her number one goal, she knows that finding them the right neighborhood for their specific lifestyle is equally as important.

“There are a lot of agents that miss out on opportunities to form strong relationships because they don’t want to take the

time to really understand their buyers.  “For me, that’s the first thing I do when I meet a buyer.  I want to know their why, I want to understand them so that I can deliver for them.  Why are they moving? What do they want their life to look like? How do they spend their days?  It’s by asking those questions that I’m able to put people not just in spaces but into their forever homes.”

When it comes to her own home, Trisha draws much of her inspiration from her travels.  She looks for ways to recreate the

feeling that visiting a favorite resort, or hotel brought to her.  Creating a home that feels like a retreat is the most important thing to her when it comes to her space, down to the smallest details.  “I design everything in my home with the intention of creating a space that feels happy, a space that feels like I’m on vacation in my own home, a space where I can let everything else go.”

Whether you’re looking for someone to help motivate you on that next run, or if you’re looking for your dream home, we’re always gonna bet on Trisha.

Talulah Belle

A place to shop for all things beautiful.

If you’ve spent any time shopping on Main Street you’ve most likely popped into Talulah Belle at least once.  Since 2008, Amy Fonville has been perfectly curating her boutique to feature some of the most beautiful and unique home goods.  A mix of gifts, local artwork, furniture, jewelry, table settings and glassware fill her shelves offering a shopping experience that allows guests to really visualize how pieces could be paired together in their own homes.  Earlier this year, Amy moved across the street from her original location to a new, bigger space with room to add larger pieces like furniture and other home goods.  Her hope is that her store will be not only a destination for gifts, but also a place people think of when they’re looking to refresh, or redesign their space.  Amy believes it’s those thoughtful design choices like beautiful bright artwork or special glassware on the table that really make a house, a home.

Look Good. Feel Good.

Tucked below Desert Oasis off of Main Street you’ll find Kingsfield Grooming, a salon geared towards the art of men’s haircutting focusing heavily on influences from traditional barbering.  Established in 2015 by Jayson Fielder and Jaime Reyes, Kingsfield has been keeping Rochester looking good for almost a decade.  Upon stepping into Kingsfield, you quickly realize that most of the seats are filled with regular clients who sound more like long-time friends.  There are seats for catching up and sipping coffee, a cocktail bar just next door, conversations surrounding all things about life, and always a dope soundtrack on.  You know when your own son, husband, brother, co-workers and friends all go to the same spot -- it’s become the spot to be.

Kingsfield’s books fill up quickly but there are limited walk-ins available, so make that appointment.
