January 2025 PUBLISHER

Chris Oliverio | chris.oliverio@citylifestyle.com

Dear Readers, Twelve months ago, my New Year’s resolutions were quite ambitious. I was metabolically unhealthy, carrying an extra 50 pounds, and constantly battling illness. What troubled me most wasn’t just the physical toll; it was how my poor health was affecting my mental and emotional well-being. I felt stuck in a cycle of fatigue, frustration, and self-doubt. But here’s the incredible thing about being part of this community: we are surrounded by an abundance of resources, professionals, businesses, and groups all dedicated to health and wellness. This environment gave me the tools, and the hope, I needed to change. Over the past year, I’ve embarked on a journey to reclaim my health. It wasn’t always easy, and it didn’t happen overnight. But little by little, I started to feel like myself again. My energy returned. My perspective brightened. And most importantly, I realized just how much better life can be when we prioritize our well-being. This year, my resolutions look entirely different. Instead of focusing on what I want to lose, I’m focused on what I want to give: helping our community discover what it means to truly thrive. To redefine what “normal” feels like. To shift the baseline of health so that feeling amazing becomes the standard, not the exception. That’s why I’m so excited about this month’s issue of Rochester City Lifestyle, dedicated to Health and Wellness. For many of us, January is a time for fresh starts, a moment to pause, reflect, and set our sights on a better future. Within these pages, you’ll find inspiration, guidance, and resources to help you take those first steps toward becoming the best version of yourself. Whether it’s exploring a new fitness class, understanding your unique nutritional needs, or experimenting with biohacking techniques, there’s something here for everyone. The key is to set purposeful goals, develop a clear plan, and take action, no matter how small those first steps may seem. Let’s make this the year we invest in ourselves. Let’s move, nourish, detox, meditate, and embrace the possibility of change. There is a version of you waiting to emerge, one that is stronger, healthier, and happier. Here’s to a year of growth, vitality, and becoming the best version of ourselves. With gratitude,

At Perspire Sauna Studio, it’s not just about heat, it’s about health, healing, and harnessing the power of transformation. This wellness ritual detoxifies the body, clears the mind, and leaves you feeling renewed. Located in Rochester Hills, Perspire Sauna Studio brings cutting-edge technology, thoughtful design, and a mission to ignite holistic wellness. Unlike a traditional spa, it is a sanctuary for physical and mental restoration. Founded in 2010 by wellness enthusiast Lee Braun, Perspire Sauna Studio was born out of a vision to make the benefits of infrared sauna therapy accessible to everyone. “Wellness isn’t seasonal, it’s a lifelong journey,” Braun explains. “Through our science-backed therapies and thoughtfully designed spaces, we strive to make wellness accessible, consistent, and transformative for everyone.” At Perspire Sauna Studio, the experience is modern, clean, and calming, a true Zen oasis where members can relax and recharge. The private sauna suites feature state-of-the-art, full-spectrum infrared saunas crafted with non-toxic, antimicrobial cedar for a safe and luxurious experience. Advanced technology ensures EMF and ELF levels remain far below safety thresholds, prioritizing both comfort and wellness. “We prioritize health and wellness as part of our lifestyle. Being full-time working parents, both physical and mental health are essential. We discovered Perspire almost two years ago and have been coordinating our sessions ever since. We feel amazing after the session, get the best sleep, and the 40 minutes of stillness, of alone time, is the icing on the cake,” say Kristy and Larry Harrington. For Stephanie Ubaydi, Rochester franchisee owner, the magic of Perspire is evident: “A 40-minute sauna session at Perspire Rochester provides relaxation, recovery, and a ritual experience. Guests often have an ‘aha’ moment, realizing Perspire was indeed the piece they needed in their life.” First-time guests are guided to establish a tailored wellness routine that fits their goals, lifestyle, and budget. Each session is personalized, featuring full-spectrum infrared saunas, towel service, chromotherapy, and premium entertainment. The state-of-the-art heaters emit near, mid, and far-infrared wavelengths, gently raising body temperature and unlocking a range of powerful healing benefits. Halo Therapy, our newest technology rolled out in April 2023, is an additional add on if it’s desired. Halo Therapy disperses pharmaceutical-grade salt particles into the air during sauna sessions. centuries-old therapy supports respiratory health by relieving congestion and chest tightness and aiding in allergy and sinus relief. Consistency is key to maximizing the benefits of infrared sauna therapy. Perspire encourages members to view these benefits as cumulative. After a single session, members might notice improved sleep, vibrant skin, reduced inflammation, and less soreness. Over time, regular sessions contribute to longterm health and well-being. Infrared sauna therapy offers numerous benefits, from stress relief, glowing skin, and muscle recovery to improved circulation, lower blood pressure, and enhanced immune function. Lesser-known advantages include improved cardiovascular health, cognitive benefits like a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s and the physiological effects of heat therapy that mimic exercise. The benefits of Perspire extend far beyond the physical, touching lives in profound ways. For Rene Deman, Perspire was instrumental in her recovery from breast cancer. “Perspire changed my life. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2023 and underwent surgery in January 2024. Shortly after, I began infrared sauna and red light therapy at Perspire. Within a few sessions, I noticed my surgery wounds healing faster, better sleep, and an overwhelming sense of health. It became a sanctuary for me, a peaceful space to think and reflect. I’m now cancer-free and I firmly believe Perspire played a significant role in my recovery.”

"I was able to exc ret e th e majority of the heavy metals and toxins from my body within a month through the powers of i nf ra red sa u n a th e ra py alongside the capabilities of c h r o m o t h e r a p y" - Emily Kalinowski Emily Kalinowski

Similarly, Emily Kalinowski credits Perspire with saving her life after a severe health crisis. “Shortly after being diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning, with oxygen levels in the low 50s, I discovered Perspire. My recovery amazed even my specialists. Through infrared sauna therapy and chromotherapy, I was able to detox heavy metals and toxins from my body. Perspire has since become a daily ritual for me, improving my health and saving my life.” Each session at Perspire Sauna Studio experience includes Red light therapy (RLT) and is designed to complement your experience with a 20-minute activation. This medical-grade therapy helps reduce inflammation, boost collagen production, relieves pain, balances hormones, promotes cellular healing and may even improve sleep quality. Chromotherapy, an additional therapeutic healing approach that sets Perspire apart is offered during every session, and uses color frequencies to influence mood and mental clarity. “Sharing the stories of health & wellness and these success stories of others is something we were definitely motivated by and the biggest reason we chose to open our business here in this community. If we can give just a few people the much needed 40 minutes of peace, solitude and relaxation they deserve every day from this fast paced, hyper connected world we know we can be builders of health here in Rochester,” claims owners Stephanie and Rami Ubaydi.

Many members’ journeys highlight diverse needs—from relaxation and mindfulness to muscle recovery and healing from chronic illnesses such as Lyme disease, mold toxicity, and autoimmune conditions. “We don’t know every path our members are on and we are thankful that their path has led them to us and we are now a part of their personal journey,” says Stephanie. Looking ahead, Perspire Sauna Studio plans to expand its footprint in Michigan and beyond. “We’re already exploring opportunities for new locations in Metro Detroit,” Stephanie reveals. “Our goal is to bring this transformative wellness experience to as many people as possible.” In the meantime, the Rochester Hills studio remains a beacon of health and relaxation, offering $20 introductory sessions to encourage new visitors. “That’s how we first experienced Perspire, and the next day, we began researching how we could bring this concept to our community,” Rami shares. Perspire’s commitment to wellness extends into the community through events, partnerships with local businesses, and educational forums on detoxification, mental health, and mindfulness. “We want to be more than just a service provider,” Stephanie explains. “We aim to be a resource and a partner in wellness.” “The sole purpose at Perspire Sauna Studio is to do everything possible to help each and every member feel supported and encouraged during their individual journey to health and wellbeing, thus allowing them to ignite the wellness within.” Lee Braun, Founder & CEO, Perspire Sauna Studio Whether seeking relaxation, recovery, or a deeper connection to wellness, Perspire Sauna Studio offers a serene, transformative escape from the hyper-connected world, 40 minutes at a time.

PILATES & WELLNESS The Art and Science of Holistic Movement

18

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FIT N E SS

Reforming Foundations Pilates & Wellness stands out with its holistic approach, integrating modern Pilates techniques with physical therapy and comprehensive wellness programs. This method goes beyond traditional exercise, focusing on healing, strength, endurance, and controlled mobility while deepening the connection between mind and body. “I think Pilates is a system of movement that every human needs to experience in their body,” shared Brooke, owner of Reforming Foundations. “Traditionally, it’s known as a form of strength and resistance training using your own body weight, spring resistance or spring assistance. The method of Pilates, invented by Joseph Pilates, involves incorporating your breath when moving from your center, bringing awareness, concentration, and focus to it. Using principles of precision and the mind-body connection, Pilates becomes a beautiful form of movement that respects your body while building strength and mobility.” CONTINUED >

Joseph Pilates envisioned his method as a universal practice, accessible to everyone regardless of age, ability, or purpose, a vision that lives on today. At Reforming Foundations, clients range from young children to seasoned athletes and those in their golden years. Brooke has worked with professional hockey and basketball players, as well as the Detroit Lions’ special teams, training athletes like Don Muhlbach, Matt Prater, Sam Martin, Ziggy Ansah, Miles Killabrew, Kenny Golladay, Darius Slay, and Haloti Ngata. The beauty of Pilates lies in its adaptability, whether enhancing athletic performance, supporting dancers with precision, or helping grandparents play comfortably with their grandchildren, it meets everyone where they are. Pilates isn’t just for some, it’s for everybody.

This versatility makes Pilates a safe, functional form of movement grounded in exercise science. The approach feels natural and restorative, building balance and strength in the body without strain. “The beauty in Pilates is that time under tension, reps to fatigue, and focusing on what is moving versus what is stabilizing, all from a biomechanical perspective,” explains Brooke. “In order for movement potential to be achieved, something has to be strong, and something has to be mobile. If you don’t have the balance between the two, there will be movement compensation.” Brooke’s journey to founding Reforming Foundations Pilates & Wellness began as a deeply personal experience that blossomed into a mission to serve others. She envisioned a space where

people of all ages and abilities could feel welcome, train safely, and connect with their bodies. Today, Reforming Foundations stands as a beacon of inclusivity and functional wellness, providing clients with a safe space to grow stronger, healthier, feel at home in their bodies and more confident in their movement. The lessons learned from early challenges in Brooke’s own Pilates journey, including the risks of improper technique, directly shaped the foundation of the business. This commitment to safety, education, and mindful movement remains central to the studio’s philosophy today and defines the Reforming Foundations difference. Dr. Lindsay Brandt, DPT, OMPT, brings her expertise as a physical therapist to Reforming Foundations, where rehabilitation and Pilates blend seamlessly into a harmonious approach to wellness. As co-author of the Reforming Foundations School of Pilates Teacher Training program, she collaborates with Brooke to modernize the traditional Pilates repertoire with contemporary movement science, ensuring safe and functional movement for everybody. At Reforming Foundations, clients are guided by highly trained instructors with multiple certifications and advanced degrees in fields like physical therapy, exercise science, kinesiology, and dance. The studio’s holistic and personalized instruction, paired with beautifully crafted, American-made Balanced Body machines, fosters recovery, strength, and wellness. inspiring path to a meaningful career in movement and is held right here in downtown Rochester twice a year. Brooke’s decision to establish her studio in downtown Rochester was rooted in a deep passion for supporting historical downtown districts. Growing up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, she fondly recalls family trips into the small downtown district of Manistique, where visiting local shops was an event in itself. “In this modern age of malls and suburban sprawl, I believe downtown districts are where true community happens,” she shares. This belief has guided her to ensure all three of her studios are located in downtown historical spaces, each chosen for its unique charm and significance. The Rochester studio is housed in the town’s old historical library, a building steeped in community legacy. Built in 1926, the library served as a cornerstone of knowledge and gathering for decades. The space’s stunning architecture captivated Brooke with its high ceilings, exposed wooden beam trusses, and walls of windows that flood the studio with natural light. “The light in this building is incredible, it feels alive,” she says. “The exposed trusses remind me a little of the barn beams on my family’s farm growing up,” and that connection to history and nature just resonated with her. At over 6,000 square feet, this is her largest studio

Reforming Foundations offers a variety of Pilates classes tailored to different fitness levels and goals, including, Foundations, Reform, Core Stability, Power, Total Body Hiit, Pilates Flow, Mat Pilates, Tai Chi and restore with Sound Healing. For a more personalized experience, Reforming Foundations offers individualized training sessions, including one-on-one and semi-private options, allowing instructors to tailor workouts to individual needs and goals. Pilates should never feel intimidating, and at Reforming Foundations, our mission is to make it accessible to everyone. Whether you’re new to exercise, recovering from an injury, or simply seeking to feel at home in your body, we provide a supportive community where you can learn to move with confidence. It can be a life-changing experience to first understand how to hold your body in alignment before movement even begins, laying the foundation for growth, strength, and healing. The Pilates method meets every person where they are on their journey, offering transformative benefits addressing the whole person, body, mind, and spirit, Pilates becomes a cornerstone of holistic health, empowering individuals to move through life with strength, balance, and vitality. We believe in the art and science of holistic movement, combining mindful techniques, functional training, and a wholebody approach to wellness. At Reforming Foundations, our goal is to empower you to feel strong, balanced, and aligned, both in your body and in your life. A peek behind the scenes at Any Lab Test Now, where just a 15 minute visit could change the direction of your health journey.

Don’t Guess, Test. There is truly nothing more important than the overall health of our minds and bodies. It’s usually not until we’re faced with an illness, persistent symptoms, or a new diagnosis that we truly realize the value of feeling good, leaving us to scramble to understand what’s going on and focus our energy on our healing journey. But what if you could take a proactive approach to your health—before issues arise? If you’re looking to get answers about your health, go deeper into your wellness journey, or simply check in with yourself, Any Lab Test Now is the perfect place. Over the past few years, there has been an increasing conversation about the importance of proactive health management, especially through lab testing.

exercise, lifestyle, and treatments—so you can move forward with confidence. If you’re not sure what test you’re looking for, don’t worry, the team at Any Lab Tests Now can help guide you. They provide the doctor’s order for over 8,000 tests, and there are a few that they consider great starting points. 1. Pharmacogenomics testing looks at how your genes affect your response to medications. It’s a revolutionary tool that allows doctors to prescribe the most effective medications based on your genetic makeup. This can prevent adverse drug reactions, help optimize dosage, and ensure that you’re getting the best treatment possible for your unique body chemistry. CONTINUED >

While most healthcare providers will run standard tests to monitor certain markers, what if you could know more? When it comes to taking your health seriously, taking the guesswork out of the equation can make a world of difference in how you approach your well-being. Lab testing isn’t just for diagnosing illness; it’s a valuable tool that empowers you to understand your body better. When you get regular lab tests, you’re able to take a deeper look into how your body functions, and you can uncover hidden imbalances before they become issues. It’s about having the knowledge at your fingertips, showing you that everything is functioning as it should. By taking a proactive approach with lab tests, you’re provided with clear answers that can help to guide your health decisions. Think of it as putting together a map to guide you on your wellness journey. Whether it’s identifying deficiencies, tracking hormone levels, or understanding your genetic responses to medications, knowing where you stand means you’re not making health decisions in the dark. This is why Any Lab Test Now encourages a simple mantra: “Test, Don’t Guess.” With so much uncertainty about health, testing removes the ambiguity and helps you take control. Knowing exactly what’s going on in your body allows you to make informed choices about nutrition, JANUARY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/RO C HE ST E R M I

2. Methyl Detox Profile: Supporting Detoxification and Health. Methylation is a crucial biochemical process that affects detoxification, immune function, and the regulation of various genes in your body. A methyl detox profile can provide valuable information about how well your body detoxifies, which is especially important for maintaining energy levels, mental clarity, and overall health. 3. Micronutrient testing looks at the levels of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients in your body. These nutrients play a vital role in supporting immune function, energy production, and overall health. Deficiencies in key micronutrients can lead to fatigue, mood disorders, weakened immunity, and even chronic illnesses. 4. Hormone Testing. Hormones are powerful regulators of your body’s functions, affecting everything from metabolism and mood to reproductive health and energy levels. As we age or experience health challenges, hormone imbalances can lead to a range of symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, and sleep disturbances. Hormone testing helps you understand your hormone levels and can guide targeted treatments to bring balance back into your life, whether through lifestyle changes, nutrition, or hormone therapy. When it comes to testing, there are two main types: foundational testing and transformational testing. Foundational Testing is a type of testing that provides a baseline of your health. It’s about understanding where you stand in terms of core health markers, such as blood pressure, cholesterol,

glucose levels, and key nutrients. The other is transformational testing which goes beyond the basics and looks for deeper issues that could be influencing your health. This type of testing can help you make significant changes in your health by uncovering underlying issues that may not be obvious at first glance. Regardless of the testing path you choose, you can be certain that their team will guide you through every step and assist you with next steps once you receive your results. The best part? You can walk in today and get started on your testing journey right away. Prioritize your health this year, and jumpstart your journey toward a healthier life. VISIT JAC AT NÉKTER JUICE BAR At Nekter Juice Bar, health isn’t just a trend, it’s a lifestyle. Few embody this philosophy more fully than Jac, the manager and driving force behind the vibrant community that has flourished around Nekter. With a passion for wellness and a talent for crafting delicious, nutrient-packed smoothies, Jac has made his mark as a leader, advocate, and guide, inspiring countless individuals on their health and wellness journeys. Jac’s journey began in his teens when he first discovered the transformative power of nutrition. Recognizing the connection between protein intake and physical recovery, he realized that mindful eating could decrease recovery time and enhance physical performance. As Jac delved deeper, his understanding of nutrition evolved:

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | FO OD + BE VE RAGE

“I learned the importance of healthy plant foods and their correlation with an effective and responsive immune system,” Jac explains. “I also found that proper nutrition provided sustained energy without stimulants like coffee, improved my energy levels, and enhanced my sleep quality. This journey led me to understand which foods keep arteries clear, support a responsive immune system, lubricate joints, clarify the mind, balance hormones for motivation and sleep, and combat oxidative stress for longevity.” At Nekter, Jac brings this wealth of knowledge to every interaction. When guests come in with specific health goals, he takes a personalized approach, first gaining an understanding of their current health status and readiness to make dietary changes. From there, Jac selects ingredients tailored to their objectives, ensuring the resulting smoothie is both enjoyable and supportive of their wellness goals.
