Hello!

I’m not sure how I found myself in the pages of this amazing publication, but I’m so glad I did. When I was approached to be the lead photographer for Rochester City Lifestyle, it was a very easy yes for me. I’ve spent my entire life in Rochester, met my husband here and am now raising a family of my own in the city that I’ve always called home. Since starting my photography business in 2015, I’ve had the honor of being a part of some of the most incredible moments in the lives of over 2000 Rochester area families. My job not only allows me to do what I love, but it’s given me the opportunity to meet so many of YOU! I hope you’re enjoying reading the stories inside each issue as much as I’m enjoying learning about the amazing people in our city. Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of your lives in such a meaningful way. I look forward to watching your families grow, and to capturing so many of your special moments in the years to come!
Enjoy these final weeks of summer!

As temperatures rise, children race to the freezer for this frosty treat or wait anxiously for the approach of the musical ice cream truck. Making homemade popsicles is a fun, kidfriendly activity. These recipes feature kid-favorite flavors with an added taste twist. The only tricky part is waiting for them to freeze.

GIVING FAMILIES AND THEIR PETS THE GIFT OF FREEDOM, SAFETY AND PEACE OF MIND.

It’s estimated that there are over 62 million households across America that have dogs and around 73% of those households rely on some type of training method to help their dogs become the best boy or girl on the block. With over 157 locations, we’re lucky to have one of the best dog training facilities around, right here in our backyard! Led by owners Nick and Amy, a husband and wife team dedicated to ensuring pets

and their families live their best lives, Sit Means Sit is a destination for obedience training, behavior modification, and offers preparation for therapy and crisis dog certification
In 2008, when Amy Garabedian decided to leave a successful career in finance to pursue her passion for dogs, she convinced her husband to join her. From there they spent years acquiring certifications including; AKC Breeder of Merit, Canine Ambassador, and CGC Evaluators. They are both Pet Tech® First Aid & CPR certified instructors and have been changing the lives of families all over the community.
Their facility is over 8500 square feet of space and is equipped 24/7 with audio, video, temperature, and carbon monoxide monitoring. They also have a PetAirapy system for UV-C germ control and sanitation. Just outside the facility, runs the Clinton River Trail, allowing them the unique opportunity for trail walks and community meet-ups.
Sit Means Sit offers a variety of courses that cover a wide range of needs based on each individual dog. Puppy training begins around 12 weeks and focuses on house training, impulse control, obedience and socialization. Day training offers a combination of immersion and

private lessons and is designed to include owners more in the training process while still utilizing the expertise of a professional trainer, beginning at five months of age. At six months, dogs are eligible for immersion training, an opportunity that allows clients to pass the responsibility of training over to expert trainers to utilize their skills at a very high level. After completion of an immersion or day-train program, clients are eligible to attend group classes.
In addition to classes, Sit Means Sit partners with Go Team for therapy

dog training. This training program is offered annually, and is more intensive than typical therapy dog training to help with the certification of crisis response dogs. In order to become certified, dogs must train at the local fire department, library, or other public places where a crisis response dog may be needed.
Something that we found special at Sit Means Sit is that most of the trainers are former clients who benefited from the training and then chose to become trainers themselves. This fosters a

family-like environment with a shared goal of impacting other pets and families in the same positive way. Megan, one of their main team members worked with Amy and Nick to fully transform her rescue dog, Spaghetti, and she now oversees their office alongside her trusty assistant, Chili.
“The whole point of ALL of this is just that dogs are incredibly special. To be able to be in a position to help a lot of people. We’re here for the dogs. The dogs are the ones that need to be advocated for. The lifestyle that comes with having a well-trained dog is something that every dog and every family deserves.”
We couldn’t agree more.
Sit Means Sit offers free consultations for dogs 16 weeks and older and are generally 45-60 minutes long.

RELAXATION AWAITS AT THE NATURE-INSPIRED PLAY AREA AND TRANQUIL BOARDWALK.

ARTICLE BY ERICA REAGLE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA SNOW
If you’re looking for your new favorite family-friendly park in Rochester Hills, Innovation Hills is definitely worth checking out. Located at 2800 W. Hamlin Road, this 110acre park has unique features for people of all ages including a giant treehouse, relaxing walking paths and a covered events pavilion.
The park opened in October 2019 and the spacious playground area was added in September 2021. Entry is free and there is convenient parking just steps away from the main park entrance. Innovation Hills is open year-round, but the hours vary based on the time of year so be sure to check the schedule online before visiting. Currently the park is open from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm.
This award-winning park has received several accolades including the “Special Innovative – Decorative” award from the Michigan Concrete Association and the Park Design of the Year Award from mParks, the Michigan Recreation and Park Association. There are many unique design elements throughout Innovation Hills including glow stones in the concrete that shine as the sun sets and a slanted wall covered in turf that doubles as a slide.
The moment you walk through the park gates, you’re greeted by a larger-than-life treehouse which serves as the focal point of the three-acre nature-themed playground. The play area has sections built specifically for each age group from two to 12. “There’s something for everyone to do here
at Innovation Hills, no matter their age or abilities,” says Maryann Derr, Assistant Park Ranger at Innovation Hills. “The fenced-in, wheelchair-accessible playground makes it an inclusive and secure play space.” Activities include twisty slides, a zip line, tunnels perfect for a game of hide-andseek, musical instruments and oversized busy boards that promote imagination and creativity. The swing sets are various shades of green and brown to blend in with the surrounding nature elements. There’s also a river that flows right through the playground area with working water pumps. “This is a big hit with the kids,” says Maryann. “They are always splashing around and enjoying the water.”
But there’s more to Innovation Hills than the playground area. If you’re looking for a quiet place to walk, bike or read, check out the one-mile walking path and wooden plank boardwalk that’s surrounded by trees, wildflowers and birds. “The wooden plank boardwalk allows people of all ages to enjoy a comfortable nature walk,” says Maryann. Innovation Hills is also home to two gardens—a sensory garden and a butterfly-shaped garden. We were lucky to see a mallard duck nesting on top of the entrance to the sensory garden last time we visited the park.
There’s also a live roof shelter area that’s available to rent for special events from May through September. This 16 x 20-foot open-air space has two eight-foot picnic tables and enough room to accommodate approximately 16 people. It’s conveniently located right near the park entrance and inside the playground area with easy access to the restrooms.
Whether you want to spend just an hour or the whole day at Innovation Hills, there is plenty to do at this versatile park. Take your kids to the playground, pack a picnic lunch or walk along the boardwalk and listen to the sounds of nature to get away from the hustle and bustle.

When we go to Innovation Hills, my two-year-old son loves climbing through the treehouse, playing in the sandbox and going down the slide. But he’s also just as content looking for ants and pointing out all of the birds flying by.
Rochester Hills residents Alyssa and Jake Trecapelli say they love how many kid-friendly activities there are at Innovation Hills. “The park is super unique compared to others in the area,” they say. “We also like that there’s spongy turf instead of woodchips, which makes it safer for the kids.” They go to Innovation Hills often with their oneyear-old son. Jake also visits the park to fly fish in the Clinton River, which you can conveniently access from Innovation Hills. Kayak carts are available by reservation, but you must bring your own kayak.
On any given day at Innovation Hills, you can find children playing on the swing sets, families enjoying picnics, friends biking and couples strolling on the boardwalk. The modern design, cleanliness and versatility of the space make Innovation Hills a can’t-miss local park.

A CULINARY ACADEMY DEDICATED TO EDUCATING CHILDREN AND ADULTS ON COOKING FUNDAMENTALS.

When Tonia Carsten got the idea to open a cooking school, she set out to create something different, something special and something local. That’s exactly what she’s done with Rata2ee - a culinary academy located in downtown Rochester that focuses on hands-on instruction, proper cooking technique and the origins of food.
For elementary-age kids, learning to make pasta from scratch is the most popular, followed closely by hand-made pizza. For older kids, the true foodies will venture out and try all types of different foods. “They love the homemade pasta, but it’s the sushi rolling that really gets their eyes excited. I think it’s seeing something they created on the plate that makes it magical for them.”
If you’re looking for something fun to do with your family, Rata2ee has been holding Cupcake Wars Birthday Parties, and is planning on offering teen *Pizza Palooza* nights. Tonia has dreams of holding “Chopped” style competitions in their downtown Rochester space, putting Rata2ee on the national radar. “Every year we get contacted by Top Chef Junior and other Kids’ Baking Championship, asking us if we have anyone who would like to try out. One day, that will happen!”
Tonia wants us all to remember that sitting down and breaking bread with one another is how memories are made with families and friends. It is where we learn to have conversations, learn to adjust with varying

opinions, and how to use our words to communicate. Our grandparents ate straight from the garden, sat at tables without devices in hand and lived longer than the generation after them. “It’s time to let our bodies do what it knows best - heal with proper water, rest, and nutrition. Time to sharpen our knives and get to cooking!”

Although she has a love for all types of cuisine, Tonia would pick Middle Eastern or Mediterranean food every time. She could eat it every day without getting tired of it, AND research has shown it’s one of the best healthy diets out there. We call that a win-win.
Whether your pup has the obedience of a dog show finalist, or social behavior that makes you want to play dead around others, you can develop more owner confidence with help from this expert trainer.
ARTICLE BY LISA MOYER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES | STYLED BY ANGELA BROOCKERD

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”
Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.
• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it , but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.
• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.
• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.
• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.
