hicago has become somewhat of a second home for my husband and me. We do a lot of our shopping there— not on the Magnificent Mile but Oak Street. There you find unique, luxury boutiques and receive personalized assistance that turns shopping for jeans into an experience! Every store offers a unique style and service that makes you feel at home. Luxury stores include names like Dolce & Gabbana, Escada and Ted Baker. When we’re done shopping, Oak Street has several dining options. I like Spiggia for their delectable Italian cuisine and sweeping views of Lake Michigan. But this past month I made a discovery. You can get the Chicago shopping experience, without the 10 percent sales tax, right here in downtown Rochester!

LEC ON TE M EN ’S CLOTH I ER S On my way to work one morning, I planned a purchase of a new tie or shirt as a surprise gift for my husband. I stopped into LeConte Men’s Clothiers on South Main Street in between Hepplewhite’s and The Urban Merchant. When I first walked in, I was greeted by a sweet scent of Italian leathers and musk. LeConte’s new store manager, Lauren Munro, greets me with a lovely smile. She asks what I’m looking for and offers me a drink, but I’m just here to browse. The store has a masculine feel; there’s a television, a place to sit and the layout glides you through the store. As I browse, I see designers like Jack Victor and Coppley. The pieces feel traditional yet up-to-date.

Store owner Michael Browe notices me looking at a pair of Brax crossover pants. They’re in between dressy and casual, and I like the cotton feel. Browe tells me the pant is one of his favorite pieces in the fall collection. I ask him what the big trends for fall are this year and he chuckles. “I work in fashion, not fads,” Michael says to qualify his answer. “Fall is like Christmas here! We’re offering an entirely new collection featuring timeless suits and sport coats, new cashmeres and leathers, and we’re offering a lot of trimmer-fit legs and pieces with no age boundaries." Immediately, I can tell he’s a people person. He tells me he builds relationships and wardrobes. Several of his clients have been with him since the store opened 32 years ago. “They trust me to ensure they always look their best, and that’s an important job because the way you present yourself can advance or hinder many aspects of your life,” he says. And part of looking good is having outfits that fit properly. LeConte offers quality tailoring, so clients leave with a custom-designed outfit that’s tailored to fit them perfectly. “Being polished and put together makes you feel more confident and empowers you to seek out your goals," Michael says. "My father always said dress for the job you want, not the job you have." He is dressed for the part! When he and his wife Suzanne opened their first shop, there were six clothing stores in the area including department stores like Jacobson’s. It’s clear why his store has withstood the test of time. Michael has turned shopping into an experience. When a client visits the store, they’re invited to sit and enjoy a glass of wine as they browse fabrics and colors. complement a client’s unique stature and build. Then the tailor guarantees you have a perfect fit and the client leaves looking and feeling exceptional. “My goal is to build a client’s wardrobe so that when they get dressed, they don’t have to think about what they’re going to wear. I have even gone to clients’ homes to help them weed the things they shouldn’t be wearing anymore,” he says. “I want my customers to look great and feel confident, so they can focus on doing their job or simply enjoy dinner out, without feeling self-conscious about what they’re wearing.” Michael started out in 1971 at Hillers Men’s Store in Lake Orion. In 1974, he moved on, working in store management for Crowley’s and as a sales rep. He always wanted to be his own boss and was a natural entrepreneur. In 1983, they opened Pears Shoe store in downtown Rochester. In 1986, Michael and his wife opened LeConte down the street from the shoe store. To get a sample of what LeConte has to offer, the shop will host a trunk show with both Jack Victor and Coppley September 20-30. Michael and I exchange goodbyes, and I turn right down University. Another boutique catches my eye.

SCAR BOR OUGH SQUAR E Scarborough Square is less than a year old. The store has an open floor plan, barn-wood floors, tin ceilings and industrial racks. Store owner Tara Hayes is wearing a T-shirt, distressed jeans and golden goose sneakers. She eagerly offers to help me find what I’m looking for. The store boasts brands like Free People, LNA, Splendid, Paige, AGOLDE, AG Jeans, Daydreamer, Junk Food and Citizens of Humanity. Although the brands are recognizable, I’ve never seen these items before. “We are always looking for different one-of-a-kind pieces—unique items that stand out from others in each brand’s line,” Tara says.

The store is upscale-casual, specializing in jeans. But Tara tells me one of her favorite pieces in the fall collection is an oversized Moon River sweater with fringe. The collection has a European flavor with West Coast warmth. “My boutique carries a mix of upscale, casual clothing lines from the East and West Coast with European flair," she says. "Scarborough Square carries the most unique fashion labels and caters to clients willing to take a risk with their dress code!” Tara and her father have had their eye on Rochester for several years now. “There really is no other trendy clothing store in town that caters to my specific girl,” she says. "The location also strikes home for Shelby Township natives. The new parking structure near our location easily navigates shoppers from areas that surround downtown Rochester to our store." Tara previously worked for the Tennis Channel as a talent manager in Los Angeles “My passion for both tennis and fashion landed me a job where I was able to network with very well-known professionals out in Los Angeles," she says. "During my time in LA, I spent my weekends off meeting new designers and connecting with the fashion world at many local trade shows and showrooms. I truly believe that growing up a competitive junior and college tennis player has taught me to be motivated and disciplined with my work. I have a vision to succeed in the fashion industry, and I want it to be here in the metro Detroit area.” Scarborough Square is a family business, with more than 40 years of experience. “The original Scarborough Square sold clothing and accessories that were imported from all over the world," Tara says. "Once their first store was established in St.Clair Shores, my dad had a vision for something bigger. By 1978, my father and mother had a total of three clothing stores in the metro Detroit area. Scarborough Square was one of the most premiere fashion boutiques during that time. After a long journey in the fashion industry, my parents both changed careers. In 1990, Scarborough Square closed, which led my father to a career in real estate and my mother a registered nurse." Today Tara is following in her family’s footsteps and living out a childhood dream by opening up Scarborough Square of Rochester. No matter your unique style, downtown Rochester has a shop for you. BLEACHING When most people think of ways to whiten their teeth the first thing that comes to mind is “bleaching” their teeth at a dentist's office or with trays at home. This group of products uses hydrogen peroxide to remove stains below the surface of the teeth. It is important to note that hydrogen peroxide is not sodium hypochlorite which is in household bleach such as Clorox. This is why dentists like to say whitening teeth instead of bleaching teeth. These products differ in the concentration of peroxide and the delivery system. • In the office, whitening can use the highest concentration peroxide and achieve the best and fastest results with about an hour of treatment. This is the treatment of choice at our office. • A dentist can fabricate a custom-fitted tray to use a gel to whiten teeth while at home. This will get a similar result as in-office whitening but takes days or weeks as there is a lower concentration of peroxide. 34

• Over-the-counter whitening options such as Crest Whitestrips use the lowest concentration and thus take the longest to work. Tooth whitening is not for everyone. It is very important to note that any dental restorations, such as fillings and crowns, will not change color with whitening. Many people experience tooth sensitivity during or after whitening. If this occurs, using sensitivity toothpaste and/or whitening less frequently is advised. You can whiten too much, and it is very important to follow product guidelines and to talk to your dentist before beginning any whitening procedure. Some causes of dark teeth such as discoloration due to antibiotic use or nerve damage will not whiten successfully with the options discussed.
