ho says an article about selling insurance can't be whimsical and cool? This is, after all, the Halloween issue of Rochester Hills Life! The founder, Leslie Whims, was a visionary and an industrious entrepreneur. The company is proud to carry on his legacy. Whims Insurance Agency was founded in 1917 from inside Leslie's Nash auto dealership. In his spare time, Leslie was a grain dealer and farmer and was also known to be a confirmed teetotaler. He built the first bowling alley in town underneath buildings 430-432 on Main. Yes, that bowling pin is authentic. Any reader who actually set those pins is welcome to return for some great exercise lifting it a few hundred more times. Leslie and his wife lived on East Street in Rochester, where they paved over paradise and built lot 14 right outside the door of the current Whims office at 322 S. Main. This area was once known as the “Heart of the Hills” because it’s located between North and South Hill. One hundred years ago, the roads were dirt and often difficult to maneuver. As a result, drivers required a car as solid as the Nash that Leslie sold, and needed to purchase insurance. As with the dirt roads of the past, today's insurance market is difficult to navigate. A solid, established company is needed. If you are looking for a gentle exercise that increases flexibility, yoga is a great option. Flexibility exercises are great if your joints tend to be achy or stiff. In a study that looked at the effectiveness of yoga as an exercise to manage osteoarthritis in elderly women, researchers found that it provided therapeutic benefits. Not only can these low-impact moves loosen your muscles, they can also tone your supporting muscles and help prevent injury. YOGA IMPROVES RESPIRATION

With age comes respiratory limitations and reduced tolerance to physical exertion. Anything that reduces oxygen in the respiratory system can have negative effects on the mind and body. Recent studies have shown that a 12-week yoga program significantly improved respiratory function in elderly women. Breathing is the foundation of life. Humans can go weeks without food, but you cannot go more than a few minutes without breath. It is a good idea to keep your respiratory system in tip-top shape at any age. YOGA AND DIGESTION

The digestive system gets a kick-start and back on track when the stretching in yoga is coupled with a healthy diet, which can relieve constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and acid reflux. YOGA AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, can lead to cardiovascular disease and is the second leading cause of kidney disease. Recent studies have found that yoga reduces oxidative stress in the elderly. Oxidative stress is one of the underlying causes of high blood pressure and, especially for seniors, is a strong risk factor for heart attacks. YOGA HELPS REDUCES ANXIETY

STONEWALL PUMPKIN FESTIVAL (CON TI N U ED)

he Preuss family has been attending the Stonewall Pumpkin Festival since its start 17 years ago. “I haven’t missed one! Not even the year it rained!” 12-year-old Emilio shouts from the other end of the phone line. Mike and Christine Preuss live locally but their son and three grandkids, Emilio, Isaac and Oliver travel from East Lansing for the festival. “The cousins love to see who can walk on the stilts the longest,” Christine says. Families attending the festival can enjoy stilts and other games from Dinosaur Hills Pioneer Playground. Featured entertainment includes the Stoney Creek High School drum line, Oakland University dance team and performer Guy Lewis. And back again this year is one of Grandson Isaac’s favorite activities: pumpkin bowling! Cider, donuts and hot dogs are available, and kids can pick out their own pumpkin to carve. The cost for the daytime event is $7. “There’s usually five of us adults and only the three grandkids. We always end up with way too many pumpkins and have to give some away to neighbors,” Christine says. “I look for a pumpkin that has character without being carved. Because people are kind of the same way, each one is unique,” Pat McKay museum director and the founder of the Pumpkin Festival, says. The festival sees more than 3,500 guests throughout the day and pumpkin carving is an event staple. Tools are provided but guests are encouraged to bring their own if possible. “Pumpkin carving has become so advanced; it’s no longer the standard triangle eyes. We offer more than 70 stencils and many kids still create their own designs,” Pat says. “My trick to carving is when you’re gutting the CONTINUED >

pumpkin make sure to thin the walls as much as possible. That’ll give you more control when you’re carving.” The Stonewall Pumpkin Festival launched in 2000 as a way to highlight the newly renovated dairy barn. “The two have grown up together in a sense,” Pat says. “It was a co-worker who suggested the idea of a pumpkin festival after visiting an old New England town in New Hampshire. The town had scaffolding over seven stories high and over 25,000 lit pumpkins made the countryside glow. I wanted to bring that magic back but on a smaller scale and thought our stonewalls would make the perfect display area. The stonewalls are one of the museums defining characteristics, and it’s great to use them in this way.” The event is a community collaboration with the DDA and more than 70 volunteers from the Rochester Junior Women’s Club and the Rochester Garden Club. Local businesses provide 25-30 themed scarecrows that debut at the event before being moved downtown for the remainder of the month. The night of the festival, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. October 14, more than 1,000 pumpkins carved that day are lit and visitors from across the state are welcome to walk the grounds to enjoy everyone’s artwork. Visitors are encouraged to bring a donation for Neighborhood House. “October 14 is the ideal date for this event because our sugar maple and black walnut trees are at their peak color," Pat says. "It’s a great reminder to festivalgoers that we are a public park and a beautiful place to spend time.” The Museum at Van Hoosen Farm is proud to offer the Stonewall Pumpkin Festival. The festival highlights the farm's beauty while giving families the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the fall. It truly is an event where family memories and traditions are made.

riving northeast from the Rochester Hills region a halfhour up Interstate 75, you arrive at 110 Battle Alley in the city of Holly and its renowned Holly Hotel. It’s a place of elegance and incredible historic value, spanning three centuries in the hospitality business. During its fascinating history, two tragic fires consumed the hotel. The first was on January 19, 1913, and the next, 65 years later to the exact day and hour! Many consider these tragic events to be much more than mere coincidence. Professional ghost hunters have documented the historic Holly Hotel as one of the most haunted buildings, not only in Michigan but the entire nation. Strange things have been observed by staff and patrons alike, from aromas of no origin to eerie noises to full-blown apparitions. Many paranormal groups, independent ghost hunters and psychics have visited the hotel over the years, encountering occurrences that simply cannot be explained by conventional science. Norman Gauthier, a famous parapsychologist professor, once declared the hotel to be "loaded with spirits." One of the ghosts at the hotel is said to be Mr. Hirst, former owner and the most-often-seen apparition. He doesn’t like noise or renovations. He wears a frock coat and top hat and smokes cigars. He sometimes can be heard laughing or, more rarely, speaking.

Another ghost who resides in the hotel is Nora Kane, a petite, pretty lady who loves music. Her portrait can be seen in the main lobby. Her flowery perfume is often detected by guests and her apparition is often seen in the bar and back hall. She is sometimes heard playing the piano or singing late at night. If that weren’t enough, there is also said to be a ghost in the kitchen who is very active. It’s a playful spirit who often giggles and moves items, especially the meat cleaver, and can be heard running up and down stairways. This is believed to be the spirit of a child. Many more ghosts have been reported here, including Leona, the Hirst family’s terrier, who can be heard barking or running in the halls. The ghost dog even brushes up against people’s legs. Now a full-time restaurant, the Holly Hotel serves critically acclaimed classic and creative American cuisine by professionally trained chefs. Major publications, including Bon Appetit, The New York Times, Better Homes and Gardens, Midwest Living and virtually every Michigan publication has praised the Holly Hotel for its architecture, ambiance, cuisine and service. It's a three-course tea served with antique porcelain and a private collection of china tea cups and silver service. The Detroit News voted the Holly Hotel tea one of the best in Michigan, and private tea parties are often hosted for bridal and baby showers. A dynamic brunch is served from 10:39 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Sunday. An outstanding wine selection of more than 200 domestic and international wines, champagnes and liqueurs are offered by its waitstaff. In addition, the historic Holly Hotel is recognized as one of the originators of fair-market wine pricing for all wines on its list. The Holly Hotel holds a number of special events throughout the year, including the Fresh Morel Mushroom Festival in late May, haunted seances and Halloween events throughout October, the Victorian Feast in December and special holiday dinners, which have continued for more than 37 years. he Village Art Gallery, 236 Main St., will again this year have pumpkins and decorating essentials in front of the store. As the owner/director of the Village Art Gallery, it has always been my mission to encourage and nurture artistic endeavors of all kinds, especially in the young.

Supplying the pumpkins and decorations at the Halloween event is a great way to do so. The children are so free and uninhibited. They just do what they instinctively feel. No bounds, just creative spirit. I love watching them. Lots of fun things will be going on, and it will be a treat for young and not so young. Dress up your little ones and yourself, if you so desire, and come to the Village of Rochester Hills shopping center. Many of the stores will be passing out treats. There will also be games galore at the stores and many other fun things to do. Please join the fun and put on your creative hats and come and decorate the pumpkins. Your new masterpieces will be yours to take home and add to your pumpkin collection. TheÂ special celebration of Halloween is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, October 29. The Village Art Gallery is located on the north side of the street in the middle block. Just look for the pile of pumpkins waiting for your artistic touch.Â
