I hope this letter finds you laying by the pool or lake and soaking in some much-needed vitamin D.

As the days grow longer and the weather gets warmer, I find myself eagerly anticipating the arrival of summer. There's just something about this season that brings about a sense of excitement and adventure.

Sure, fall has my favorite flavors and scents, winter has its cozy charms, and I can't deny the beauty of spring. But when the summer solstice rolls around, I’m more than ready for the long, languid days sitting by the pool or floating on a boat.

The pages in our Summer Fun issue will help you make the most of this season. And even if summer doesn't mean three months of vacation anymore (because we're, you know, adults) we can still look forward to an adventure by crossing things off our ultimate summer bucket list (check the table of contents for ours!) and curling up with a new favorite poolside read. (P.S. teachers, you deserve this much-needed break!)

My family loves to go to all the outdoor summer concerts and fairs each year. I also love exploring new hiking trails, going for bike rides, and even just having a picnic in the park. There's something about being in nature that feels so rejuvenating and refreshing.

Just like this season has a way of bringing people together, we hope the pages inside this month’s issue will enrich and enliven your experience of our city.

Kindest Regards,

ON THE WATER

experienced boarders—that really show off the beauty of the valley from the water. Here are some of the best places to get out on a paddle board.

STILLWATER AND NORTH STAR NATURE PRESERVE

Paddle boarding is a fun activity to do with friends and family, but it is also a great full-body workout while the sun is shining. This season, grab some mates, rent some equipment, and get out on the water to both relax and work your muscles while getting a tan.

Be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen and wear those sunglasses and hats, as the sunshine can hit you at all angles when it reflects off the water. Additionally, wearing water shoes or secure sandals is helpful when getting in and out of the water steadily. And finally, bring an extra layer just in case, as you never know when it might get too sunny or too windy when you’re in the middle of the water. If you’re new to paddle boarding, try getting comfortable paddling on your knees for better stability. After a while, you can move to standing up if you feel like you have enough balance.

Roaring Fork Valley has plenty of places to paddle board—both for beginners and more

This part of the Roaring Fork River is a great option for beginners and anyone who wants to have more of a relaxing float, rather than a workout. Stillwater is especially great to get your footing and feel it out, as this section is comparable to a lazy river with its slow current. Start at Wildwood School, just out of town toward Independent Pass, and end your paddle at the Rainbow Bridge. On the way, you will see beautiful nature and wildlife along with other paddlers, tubers, kayakers, and canoers.

RUEDI RESERVOIR

Located about 16 miles up Frying Pan Road from Basalt, Ruedi Reservoir offers a great chance to explore the shoreline. This is one of the most popular paddle boarding destinations, so when you get there, find the meadowed area, as it has less boat traffic and the waters are calmer. You can also stay the night at Dearhammer Campground, which is the ideal place to start with your paddle board. If you want a more relaxing paddle, plan to visit the reservoir in the morning or evening, as mountain lakes are known for stronger afternoon winds.

TWIN LAKES

On the east side of Independence Pass are two majestic glacial lakes called Twin Lakes, and

12

these are both great for a scenic paddle. Both lakes are ringed with small beaches to take a break from the water. Much like Ruedi Reservoir, Twin Lakes also experience high winds in the afternoon, so morning and evening paddles are usually preferred for a less exhausting ride. One of the two Twin Lakes has a former resort on its shore, called Interlocken, which was built in 1879. This is a great bonus, along with views of Mount Elbert in the background of your paddle.

GLENWOOD CANYON FROM THE COLORADO RIVER

While the Colorado River does have sections of big rapids, there are still sections that are perfect for paddle boarding. Exit 119 from I-70 leads you to No Name in Glenwood Canyon to find the start of your journey. This section of the rivers is relatively mild with a few rocks and riffles to keep paddle boarders on their toes. Take the river all the way to Two Rivers Park, where you can hop out and walk around town. This route offers stunning views of Glenwood Canyon, and you get to navigate Glenwood Spring’s “Horseshoe Bend” while taking in the beauty.

A Passion for Plants

Leslie Buettner, owner of Botany Houseplant Shop, wants to fill your home with thriving greenery

Leslie Buettner’s passion for plants began nearly 20 years ago while living in Portland, Oregon. “It’s kind of a lovely place to fall in love with plants,” Leslie says. “I was so excited by all of the green around me and the fact that you could garden year-round. You can grow just about anything there.”

The love affair that began with plants and greenery and “digging in the dirt” grew, as did Leslie’s knowledge of gardening. Along with a strong background in retail merchandising and customer engagement, she was compelled to open a boutique plant nursery and personal gardening business.

But after 14 years in Portland, the Roaring Fork Valley called to her. Born and raised in Chicago, Leslie grew up vacationing and visiting family in the Roaring Fork Valley. “The valley became my home away from home,” Leslie says, and in 2017 she decided to make it her permanent home. “My siblings and nieces and parents are all in Colorado. My partner and I just wanted to be closer to all of them.”

As Leslie and her partner settled into Carbondale, she says the idea to open another plant business was immediate. “We talked about it from pretty much day one because we saw how successful this type of a shop could be.”

LOCALS ONLY | ARTS + CULTURE CONTINUED > 14
15 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/ROARINGFORK JULY 2023

The dream came to fruition in August 2022 as Botany Houseplant Shop, located on Highway 133 in the La Fontana Shopping Center. “I think the timing was perfect for us. We had been talking about it for so long, and thankfully nobody else had jumped on the concept in the valley,” Leslie recalls. “So we finally pulled the trigger and did it.”

Botany Houseplant Shop features healthy, high-quality indoor plants, as well as pottery and other decorative vessels, such as hand-woven baskets from Africa. And while plants and planting pots may be the two big draws for customers, Leslie also sells the one important element people may not think much about: potting soil.

“We’re big believers in quality planting medium,” Leslie says. “We carry a bagged organic soil, but we also mix our own blends of soil that we know are going to be most suitable to the plants we’re selling. For example, a standard potting mix is going to be great for a lot of your tropical foliage plants, but we add different drainage elements to our standard potting mix for cacti and succulents. We also have developed our own mix for carnivorous plants, African violets and orchids, just to name a few.”

And speaking of soil, here’s another thing plant buyers may not realize: When you purchase a big, beautiful plant, chances are it’s ready to be replanted. “I often tell people that by the time a

plant is at a retail store ready for the customer to purchase, it’s also ready to be replanted into a larger pot,” Leslie explains. “And so we always offer to pot up people’s newly purchased plants right there on the spot.”

Leslie says the top four things people do that keep their houseplants from thriving are:

1. Using the wrong type of soil for the plant

2. Keeping it in its original pot

3. Under- or over-watering

4. Giving it too much or not enough light

Since it’s sad to buy a beautiful plant just to watch it wilt and die, Leslie is happy to answer any questions you have about your ailing plant. She also offers classes and workshops on what she calls “botanical crafting,” such as building terrariums or succulent bowl gardens. And if you have a group of plant-loving friends, Leslie can help you organize a custom botanical crafting class, complete with munchies and wine.

“That’s what we’re offering here,” Leslie says. “We’re not just a store to sell things and make money. At the end of the day, we want to help people get the most out of having these green living, breathing, wonderful things in their home.”

THE MAGIC OF THE MOUNTAIN FAIR

Since 1972, the Carbondale Mountain Fair has brought people together from all around the Roaring Fork Valley, and it returns again July 28–30. Everything from live music to food to art to family fun and more will be packed into this exciting weekend.

THE FIRST FAIR

Technically, the Mountain Fair wasn’t anything but a destination on a tour for a traveling Chautauqua, stopping in Carbondale. The following year, the aptly named “Mother of the Fair,” Laurie Loeb, decided to gather a group of community members to expand upon the event. With about 20 booths—including the boy scout troop selling corn, seed necklaces, and painted rocks; the Rebekahs selling quilts; the mayor displaying bronze sculptures; and local musicians playing live sets—this turned out to be a very successful event.

After that, the community and programmers decided that such a fair needed to be an annual tradition in Carbondale. This sparked the creation of the Carbondale Council for Arts & Humanities (CCAH), which is now known as Carbondale Arts. Chief of Operations Deborah Colley notes, “When I first heard about the origins of the Carbondale Mountain Fair, the emphasis was always about finding and celebrating common ground between the different types of community members; ranchers, miners, hippies and newly displaced Aspen ski bums.”

THEN VERSUS NOW

Over the last 52 years, the fair has seen many changes. Colley says, “Over the last few years, we’ve lost community members who were essential to the founding of Mountain Fair, and at the same time there are still so many current fairgoers who were raised as fair folk and are now bringing their kids to the fair. It’s grown into being intergenerational, where we all share a strong sense of community identity and belonging.” While some events, like the mayor’s bronze sculpting, have faded away, new events are always being added, like new musicians or blooming artists. “In the last few years, some older traditions have even returned, such as the police vs. fire department tug-o-war and the singer songwriter competition,” adds Colley. “Each year has its own creative force, and we welcome all types of contributions!”

WHAT TO EXPECT

This year, the Mountain Fair will be a jam-packed weekend full of fun for all ages and interests. Alongside the tug-o-war and singer songwriter competition, there will also be the Carbondale clay center relay, a pie baking competition, and a wood splitting competition. Entertainment Conductor Aly Sanguily says, “We have an incredible lineup of music this year, from electro Latin, disco pop, funky horns, an afro funk band from Brooklyn, southern swamp Americana and great local acts, and we are very excited for the weekend lineup of amazing talent.” There will also be a fair within the fair called The Oasis. “The Oasis is a big undertaking and essentially a mini mountain fair inside the fair. Jennifer

Johnson and her students will be a big part of the Oasis this year and we always love giving the youth the freedom to be creative and productive with fair programming any chance we get.”

Almost 200 vendors are expected at the fair this year, including both new and local artists, along with some surprises along the way to keep guests entertained and excited for what’s next.

COMMUNITY IN ACTION

The Mountain Fair has always sought out the importance of the land and community of Carbondale, and made it a point to retain, honor, and pass on the culture and ethos from generation to generation. Marketing and Communications Director, Sarah Overbeck shares, “One of the most significant things that happens at Mountain Fair is the coming together of our diverse communities. Differences are both celebrated and set aside to share meaningful experiences and memories.” Each year, the community is hungry for connection, and the Mountain Fair provides the perfect avenue to find connection among both locals and visitors. It’s almost like Carbondale has created its own local holiday with the Mountain Fair, and it will hopefully continue to bring joy to the community for years to come.

GET INVOLVED

Volunteering is the best way to experience the fair, according to Overbeck, so you can find opportunities on their website every June. However, if you cannot commit to a volunteer position, you can always sign up for one of the competitions to elevate your fair experience. Finally, you can sign up for the Carbondale Arts newsletter, follow Carbondale Arts on social media, and check for applications, sign ups, and the entertainment lineup on carbondalearts.com/ mountain-fair.

at the ARRRarapahoe Springs Pool Party. Kids can set off on a swashbuckling adventure through the Shiny Stash Scavenger Hunt, in which guests will look for treasure chests located around the resort.

You won’t want to miss the Discover Colorado Escape Room , too. Andrea says you can expect to solve exciting riddles, interpret clues, and work together to escape—all while learning interesting things about Colorado. “It’s a wonderful bonding activity that is open not only to overnight guests, but anyone who would like to test their skills.” The Discover Colorado Escape Room is open Friday through Sunday and starts at $149 for groups of 1-4 people and $18 for each additional guest.

The resort features Animal Encounters which provide up-close interactions with a variety of incredible creatures. Guests can also take a virtual safari through the Wildlife Rescue —an augmented reality experience presented by bubly™. Twelve endangered animals are hidden throughout the resort, and people can use a smartphone and a free app to enjoy the experience. Andrea says, “Guests search for the tracking markers to find the hidden animals, learn facts about them, and see them come to life with the magic of augmented reality (AR).”

Dining is a big part of every vacation, and the Gaylord Rockies Resort makes sure guests’ culinary experiences are unique and memorable. Wine and beer dinners are available along with Old Hickory Master Cocktail Classes . Participants learn from master cocktail artisans, as well as local brand experts. The hourlong course begins with an overview of spirits followed by crafting two cocktails with the help of master bartenders. Cocktail classes are every Saturday at 3:00 PM and are $40 per person. The Gaylord Rockies works with various Colorado breweries to put on beer dinners, including Dry Dock and Odell Breweries.

If relaxation is really more your speed, the resort’s Relâche Spa provides summer massages, facials, and nail treatments. Mood-boosting Ylang-Ylang and honey-inspired services are available, and the summer months include spa treatments to increase your immune system as well as anti-inflammatory ginger, lime and agave services and more.

Summer packages are available. To book rooms, packages, spa treatments and event tickets, visit GaylordRockies.com .

“We want our guests to experience more... we want them to rave about their excellent experience from beginning to end.”
