The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all that reflect that best. One of my favorite articles in this month’s issue, "A Walk Down Memory Lane," written about Glenna’s favorite childhood memory of making gingerbread frosted cookies with her grandmother, sibling, and cousins every year, reminded me of some of my favorite childhood memories, as well as my own family holiday traditions I can’t wait to do each season. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a unique gift guide to make your shopping easier and make you feel good that you are giving back. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or who are alone. Nothing floods my heart and soul more than memories of going to Grandma’s and making her classic gingerbread Christmas cookies. Myself, my sister, and my cousins would gather around the big kitchen table and dig in a few days before Christmas and get to spend the afternoon making what I thought were the tastiest and most special cookies in all the world. The smell of them cooking is guaranteed to put you in a festive mood, they are really easy to make, and they will keep for at least a couple of weeks, so are perfect for a busy season. CONTINUED >

Grandma’s Christmas Gingerbread Iced Cookies FOR THE GINGERBREAD: • 3.5 oz butter, cubed • 1/3 + 1/8 cup light brown soft sugar (packed) • 2 tbsp golden syrup • 1 tbsp treacle • 1 tbsp water • finely grated zest of 1 orange • 2 tsp ground ginger • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

• 1/4 tsp ground cloves • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 2 cups all-purpose flour

FOR THE ROYAL ICING: • • • •

2 + 1/3 cups powdered sugar 2 tsp lemon juice 1 large egg white food coloring, cookie decorations, edible glitter (optional)

1. Place the butter, sugar, golden syrup, treacle, water, and orange zest in a pan and heat gently while stirring until it is melted and smooth. 2. Remove the pan from the heat and beat in the spices and baking soda, followed by the flour. Mix until it forms a smooth dough, then cover the pan and place in the fridge for about an hour, until the dough is firm. 3. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line two baking trays with baking parchment. Bring the dough together into a ball and roll out on a lightly floured surface to 1/8 inch thick. Cut out shapes using cookie cutters and place them slightly spaced apart on the baking trays. Re-roll the scraps to cut out more shapes. 4. Place the trays in the freezer for 15 minutes until firm, then bake for 10-15 minutes until the cookies feel firm when lightly pressed and darken around the edges. The smaller ones will bake faster than the big ones, so try to group similar-sized shapes together on the trays. Leave to cool on the trays for 5 minutes, then transfer onto a wire rack to cool completely. 5. Once the cookies are cool, make the royal icing. Sift the powdered sugar into a bowl and add the lemon juice. Stir in the egg white a little at a time until the icing is smooth and thick but pipe-able; if you drizzle some back into the bowl, the pattern should disappear after about 8 seconds. If it is too thick, then add a little more egg white (or lemon juice if you’ve run out), and if it is too runny, then add a little more sifted powdered sugar. 6. Spoon the icing into a piping bag fitted with a 1mm plain round nozzle. Pipe designs onto the cookies (Pinterest is a great place to get inspiration for patterns!) and set them aside for 30 minutes to dry. Sprinkle with edible glitter if using and tuck in!

The mission of the Third Street Center is to promote community through a multitenant, mixed-use facility that models sustainability in its design and practice. Originally opened in 1961 as the Carbondale Elementary School, the building was renovated, repurposed a nd reopened in June 2010 . As an independent, self-supporting community center and regional hub, they are supported by rental revenue, individual donors, and private grants. By providing long-term, affordable rental space, the Center brings together a diverse collection of nearly three dozen nonprofit organizations, artists and small businesses under one roof, leveraging their unique strengths. It offers them opportunities to work together more closely, creatively and efficiently to develop solutions for common problems facing the region and their clients. In sharing a home, nonprofits are encouraged to share skills, talents, and resources, enabling them to more effectively pursue their missions.

Through this community-based healing cycle, survivors become an empowering force to help other survivors heal and advocate for non-clinical paths to finding strength and to re-associate with their bodies. CASA of the Ninth Their mission is to provide well-trained, court-appointed volunteer advocates to abused and neglected children in Colorado's 9th Judicial District. The program's vision is to support a safe, permanent, nurturing home for every child it serves. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
