Feelings, Fall, Food & Fun Things Welcome Fall! With the changing seasons comes a change in what we are craving, and with fall that often means comforts of family, friends and food-filled activities. Our October Issue is filled with our favorite activities which include eating and drinking at fantastic restaurants and breweries, exploring nature trails, tailgating with friends, carving pumpkins, creating new recipes, and learning more about the amazing people in our community. Creating this issue reminded me that food is present in most memorable events, whether you think about it or not. Why does this food that you eat at a party, or any social event cause you to produce memories from your past and create new ones to remember in the future? We all think of food as this simple and delicious thing, yet it is so much more. Food activates portions of the brain and causes you to feel a plethora of emotions. It also acts as a time machine and as you take that first bite of your favorite meal, you are immediately brought back to your past. Food is much more powerful than we think, and we must not take it for granted just as we shouldn’t take hospitality for granted. The hospitality one receives during social events, gathering at a dinner table or at a restaurant lives within us as much as a flavorful dish satisfies our taste buds. This issue means so much to me because each person involved and part of this issue extends, lives, and breathes hospitality into everything they do. I couldn’t have been more excited to be part of the genuine connections made. There is an art to creating hospitality, great food, and social events. But what I’ve come to realize is the main ingredient is love what you do and love sharing that with others. As always, thanks for reading, and I look forward to seeing you around town!

October is a beautiful time of year and one that is synonymous with pumpkins. When you think about pumpkins this time of year, generally there are two basic purposes. One of those purposes is for eating and the other is for decorating. This seasonal crop of delight is grown in wide varieties, and each type of pumpkin has reasons to celebrate.
FOR EATING: Pink Lady Its light-textured, deep orange flesh is sweet and excellent in pureed soups or baked into pies, bread and muffins. Blue Jarrahdale This blue pumpkin with golden-orange flesh is fine-textured and sweet. It’s good for making pies and soups. Buckskin Used by some commercial processors for canned pumpkins, it’s perfect in pies.
Fairytale Fairytale pumpkin is one of the best varieties for cooking. The fine texture and thick flesh make it a good substitute for butternut squash. Galeux d’Eysines The skin is a beautiful salmon pink with warts that look like peanut shells. It’s great in soups and the scent is reminiscent of sweet potatoes and apples.
FOR DÉCOR: Mini Hybrid Usually used for decorating, they also make cute little serving vessels for soups. Iron Man Thanks to its toughness and smooth hard shell, this variety it’s just right for painting.
Cotton Candy This bright white pumpkin—even the flesh is white—has a smooth, glossy skin that lends itself to be painted or carved. White Mini Jack Use this little white gourd as you would any mini hybrid pumpkin.
FOR BOTH: Orange Kabocha The stripes and bumps on kabocha squash make it decorative. Use its sweet and slightly nutty flesh in any of the ways you would a hard winter squash.
Silver Moon A silver moon pumpkin is spectacular when carved. It also makes wonderful puree for pies, and is loaded with highly snackable seeds.

Growing up in Colorado, my family created many amazing traditions that I continue to share with my children today. Yet there still has been a lingering adventure to be experienced. I have always wanted to spend a day with my family apple picking in an orchard. When the children went back to school a few weeks ago, I started researching and much to my amazement, nestled in and around the Rocky Mountains are the best apple orchards in Colorado. Though the mountainous state isn’t known for its fruit production, you’d be surprised at the hidden gems you can find throughout the region. If you have had similar dreams to experience this activity with your own family. Please enjoy this curated list of some of the most beloved locations to spend the day loving one of the most classic and nostalgic activities of apple picking.
ADAM’S APPLE ORCHARD & COUNTRY STORE Formerly known as Masonville Orchards Ault Operations, Adam’s Apple Orchard & Country Store is a u-pick apple orchard in Ault, Colorado. Located 20 miles east of Fort Collins and 13 miles north of Greeley, the town of Ault stands for A Unique Little Town and we are happy to call this place home. Apples grown include Autumn Crisp, Bella, CandyCrisp, Early Fuji, Gala, Golden Supreme, Hawkeye, McIntosh, Ozard Gold, Pink Lady, Snowsweet, Winecrisp, and Zestar. Adam’s is not only one of the biggest orchards but also one of the best apple orchards in Colorado!
YA YA FARM AND ORCHARD YA YA Farm & Orchard is part of a historic centennial farm specializing in heirloom apples. This is a u-pick apple orchard in Boulder County, Colorado that practices both natural and organic growing methods. YA YA also offers a farm stand and a variety of livestock available for visitors to interact with. The orchard also sells apple cider donuts, apple pies, and other fresh products.
BIG B’S FRUIT COMPANY Big B’s Fruit Company is an orchard and juice company located in Hotchkiss, Colorado. Established in 1973, Big B’s produces juices and hard ciders from their orchard fruits, making it one of the best apple orchards in Colorado.
FRUIT BASKETS ORCHARD This Orchard is a full-service u-pick apple orchard in western Colorado. Located in Grand Junction, the owners of Fruit Basket pride themselves on letting visitors pick any of the fruits grown on-site. These include stone fruits like sweet and tart cherries, nectarines, peaches, plums, and apricots. Over 18 varieties of apples accompany raspberries, table grapes, and pears for a well-rounded orchard experience. Be sure to bring cash, as Fruit Basket does not take credit or debit cards.
WAG’S WORLD ORCHARDS Located in Eckert, Colorado, Wag’s World Orchard grows a few fruits including apples, nectarines, berries, pears, peaches, cherries, and plums.

These orchards are in the shadow of the Grand Mesa which lends it a temperate climate suited for fruits and vegetables. Local wildlife like the red fox, grey fox, coyote, and even wild turkeys add extra charm for visitors.

Established in 2012, Nelms Farm was founded to share the fruit of a family orchard behind their home. Nelms Farm is located in Golden, Colorado, and offers a U-Pick orchard full of fruit and vegetables grown as naturally as possible. The owners of the farm pride themselves on growing produce without pesticides or artificial chemicals. Different types are available throughout the year. Apple and potato picking reservations are available for groups.
Peachfork Orchard and Vineyards is one of Colorado’s quintessential and best apple orchards. It is nestled in the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery. Here, you will find fruit grown with care and attention as well as specially made estate wines. Visitors can pick their own grapes, apples, pears, plums, and pluots here. Apple varieties include Jonathan, Fuji, and Pink Lady, with the harvest running from August to October. During this time, visitors can help themselves to fresh, delicious fruit in view of the mountains. Peachfork Orchards is a solar-powered farm and the property is in conservation with the Mesa Land Trust.
JENKINS FARMS APPLE VALLEY ORCHARD Jenkins Farm Apple Valley Orchard is located in Penrose, Colorado. Offering a u-pick orchard that is smoke-free and family-friendly, Jenkins Farms specializes in delicious Colorado apple wine. No reservations are required and visitors are welcome to come anytime during business hours.
COLON ORCHARDS Colon Orchards is a fourth-generation farm located in the Arkansas River Valley. The apples at Colon Orchards are heritage varieties that have been grown in the Valley for centuries. You’ll be able to taste fruit here that you can’t find anywhere else, as well as

ELA FAMILY FARMS Ela Family Farms has been growing delicious fruit in Hotchkiss in western Colorado in the same way since 1907. Not only are they one of the best apple orchards in Colorado, they are also one of the oldest! You can find more than 20 apple varieties here from August through October. In the United States tacos were first mentioned in a 1905 newspaper article. At the time, Mexican immigrants were starting to move to the U.S. for mining and railroad jobs, and they brought their food tastes with them. The rest seems to be history. We all know the phrase, TACO TUESDAYS, but I am willing to bet that most people don’t save taco eating just for Tuesdays. With National Taco Day on October 4th and with so many local options, it’s easy to celebrate tacos in October. The origins of National Taco Day can be attributed to
Roberto L. Gomez. Gomez was a San Antonio journalist in the 1960s with a passion for Mexican cuisine. Believing that Mexican cuisine deserved awareness in America, Gomez established the National Taco Council. If your love language is Tacos just as much as mine, here are some recommendations on places around town to celebrate. Let’s get eating, last year Americans ate over 4.5 billion tacos! Praline Pecan Crunch Snack Mix Ingredients • 8 cups brown sugar or cinnamon cereal squares • 1 cup pecan halves • 1/3 cup light corn syrup • 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar • 3 tablespoons butter • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 2 cups white chocolate-covered pretzels • 1 cup salted peanuts • 2 packages of large waffle cones or paper bags Instructions 1. Heat oven to 250°F. Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Combine cereal and pecans in pan and set aside. 2. In a 4-cup microwaveable bowl, combine corn syrup, brown sugar and butter spread. Microwave on HIGH 1 minute 30 seconds. Stir. Microwave 30 seconds to 1 minute 30 seconds or until boiling. 3. Stir vanilla and baking soda into mixture. Pour over cereal mixture; stir to coat evenly. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes. Spread on baking sheet and cool completely; break into pieces. When cooled, add peanuts and pretzels. Makes about 10-11 cups. Store tightly covered.

ARTICLE BY GLENNA HOPE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JULLIIA RON Pumpkin Granola is both salty and sweet! Made with REAL PUMPKIN, oats, coconut, almonds, pistachios, maple syrup, cinnamon, and olive oil.
FA L L P UMP K IN GR A N O L A INGREDIENTS • 6 cups rolled oats • 1 heaping cup sliced almonds • 1 heaping cup pistachios (or other nuts) • 1 heaping cup unsweetened flaked coconut • 1 cup pumpkin puree • 1 cup olive oil or butter • 1 cup maple syrup • 2–3 teaspoons salt (if you desire less salty granola cut down to 1 ½ teaspoons) • 1–2 teaspoons cinnamon
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mix the dry ingredients together (oats, almonds, pistachios, coconut). Whisk the wet ingredients and spices together (pumpkin, olive oil, maple syrup, salt, cinnamon). Pour wet ingredients over the dry ingredients and stir to combine. 2. Spread the granola into a large nonstick jelly roll pan or cake pan – do this on two separate pans. Bake for 15 minutes; stir; bake for another 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let rest. 3. Store in a plastic zip-top bag for a week or so. Serve with yogurt, fruit, or just with good ol’ milk. YIELD Yields 9 cups of Granola
