I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I REALLY NEED A LITTLE CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR.
L AYO UT DESIGNER
After a doozy like 2020, my theme song for this month is the classic holiday tune from the 1966
Jayme Emery
Broadway musical “Mame," called—you guessed it—"We Need A Little Christmas."
CONTRIBUTING WRITERS
Caitlin Causey, Finn Collier, Kat Stewart
...For we need a little music Need a little laughter Need a little singing, ringing through the rafter
CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHERS
Cody Isaman, Emily Mae Photography, Estate Photo Video
And we need a little snappy Happy ever after Need a little Christmas now The song is performed after the zany title character loses all her dough in the stock market crash of 1929. Although our pandemic-related woes are a bit different nowadays, the number's closing lyrics seem pretty in line with how many of us are feeling. With just the right amount of camp thrown in for good measure, the song, at its heart, is a fervent wish for better times—and is a lively declaration of the old truth that Christmas glee can be a balm to soothe life's many struggles. So bring on the twinkling lights, the carols, the cookies, the cheer and goodwill.

SLOW DOWN IN TOWN THIS WINTER The Glenwood Springs neighborhood group Imagine Glenwood would like to remind drivers to "Slow Down in Town" this season. The city and commercial center speed limit is 25 mph or less, but the average vehicle drives at 33 mph. Going through downtown, this speed results in a mere one minute of driving time difference. Easing off the gas supports safe access for area homeowners and businesses (customers and employees), lessens serious outcomes in accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles, and quiets the town center. Imagine Glenwood encourages every driver to invest in the community by adhering to the legal speed limit.

easy, elega nt , del icious A FESTIVE CHRISTMAS MORNING BRUNCH MENU BY MIDVALLEY FOOD BLOGGER KAT STEWART ARTICLE CAITLIN CAUSEY PHOTOGRAPHY EMILY MAE PHOTOGRAPHY

Roaring Fork Lifestyle | December 2020
KAT STEWART GREW UP READING A SIGN HER MOTHER HAD PLACED IN THE KITCHEN: “GOOD FOOD IS THE LIFE OF THE FAMILY.” Her homegrown education in all-things-delicious began early, on her family’s California avocado farm, and nowadays she shares her love of seasonal, unfussy cooking with the Roaring Fork Valley as a private chef, recipe developer, and food blogger. “I moved to the valley in spring 2016, after college, just figuring out what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go,” says the 25-year-old, an agricultural business graduate of Cal Poly who now resides in Missouri Heights. “I started posting recipes on Instagram about three years ago, made a website, and blogging has kind of evolved organically from there as my followers grew. Then about two years ago I began doing local catering of my own, doing private events and dinners around the valley.” Stewart’s blog, “Hungry Twenties,” is based around a theme of ease and enjoyment in the kitchen. She feels strongly that fresh cooking should be a fun experience shared with others. Her sights are set on growing her online following and, once Covid-19 is less of a threat, building her business through in-home cooking workshops. “I’m really passionate about sharing the love of cooking with people, and showing them that cooking at home can be much more simple than they think,” Stewart says. “It shouldn’t be stressful or complicated. My dream is to be able to lead interactive cooking classes and events where the guests are involved in the process of preparing a meal. Whether it’s a family gathering or a group of girlfriends together on a Friday night, or any other type of occasion, my goal is to help my clients expand their horizons and feel confident preparing a meal from scratch in their own kitchen.” This season, Stewart knows that most families will be staying in together for the holidays. Her Christmas brunch menu is hearty, festive, and easy—leaving plenty of time for home cooks to enjoy the morning gift exchange with family before the meal is served. Head to HungryTwenties.com or follow on social media at @hungrytwenties to see more of her inspired recipes.

Though the cabin looks remote, it is only about 25 minutes from downtown Glenwood. It has an off-the-grid feel, but does have water and electric.

OPEN HOUSE (CONTINUED) Generous windows invite the outside in, bringing extraordinary views and natural light to the 900 sq. ft. living space.
The cabin’s rooftop firepit and bar top seating were designed with skywatching and starlit wine tastings in mind.
Handmade cabinetry and hand-poured concrete countertops were completed by the cabin’s hands-on owner.

The cabin’s atypical design called for perfect alignment of every 7-3/4” inch wood panel and floor tile. No cuts were made during construction.
That precision was key in constructing the home’s striking features: the trimless floor-to-ceiling picture frame windows, for example, and the walls’ vertical wood paneling aligned perfectly with matching floor tiles. “There really was no margin of error,” Everett recalls. “Even when laying the foundation—the excavator had to be very detail-oriented. Throughout the whole process, we had to get everyone to step back, take a breath, and really get the details right.” Interior designer Amy Jo Everett, co-owner of MM-Eight Construction and owner of MM-Eight Design, weighed in on crucial decisions inside the cabin. She worked closely with the homeowner to choose the property’s overall aesthetic by staging the interior. This collaboration between designer, builder, and client produced a captivating aesthetic that radiates from within the cabin. The Everetts are rightfully proud of their company's work on this extraordinary custom retreat. As a family-owned construction business, they honor the powerful role that a home should have in their clients’ lives. They understand that the right space is a backdrop for all the joys of family life. “We think about the birthdays and special milestones that will be celebrated in the homes we build, the good times and the hard times, all the special memories made during holidays. There’s a feeling of safety and comfort at home, so to be able to help people bring their dreams into reality is our purpose for doing what we do,” Everett says. “We love this industry. And we love to build spaces for people to truly come home to.” CityLifestyle.com/RoaringFork

“My dad was often called a pillar of the community,” Craig says. “He was recognized many times by the community association for his contributions, and he was loved by many, many people.” Today, Craig carries on his father’s legacy as the owner of Tiffany of Redstone, the vintage goods shop on the boulevard.

WATER & WOODS TIPS FOR HARVESTING YOUR OWN HOLIDAY TREE IN WHITE RIVER NATIONAL FOREST
TREE
HUNTING
ARTICLE FINN COLLIER
G R A B A P E R M I T. Christmas tree permits are available now. One permit is required for every tree you plan to cut, and you’re allowed to obtain up to five per household at a cost of $10 each. These permits can be purchased in-person at official local vendors, curbside at White River National Forest (WRNF) offices, or GET OUTSIDE
online at Recreation.gov. Also, this year the Every Kid in A Park program is offering one free Christmas tree permit to any 4th or 5th grade student with a valid Interagency Pass. Check EveryKidInAPark.gov for details.
C H O O S E W I S E LY. Tree hunters may not harvest just any tree, in any spot. Cutting the Colorado Blue Spruce (our state tree) is highly discouraged, as is the removal of single trees in open clearings. Pick a tree no more than 15 feet in height that’s growing within a cluster of other conifers, away from the side of the road. And remember: Sawing off the top of an older tree is strictly prohibited! To plan ahead and select an appropriate location, visit the WRNF website for maps and a list of permitted areas.
C A R E F O R YO U R T R E E . Once you’ve cut your tree, be sure to attach your permit to its base before transporting out of the forest. At home, remove an inch from the trunk and place in water immediately. To keep the tree fresh through Christmas, refill its water supply frequently and mist its needles each morning to prevent drying. After the holidays, don’t dump your tree at the landfill—leave it at one of the valley’s drop-off stations. (Search “Christmas tree” in EverGreen ZeroWaste’s online recycling guide at EverGreenZeroWaste.com/Recycle-Guide to find the station nearest you.)
LEARN MORE. Visit FS.USDA.gov/WhiteRiver to get complete details about tree permits, or call 970.945.2521.
