Roaring Fork Conservancy (RFC) has worked to encourage locals and visitors to explore, value, and protect the Roaring Fork watershed since 1996. In 22 years, the organization reports that it has taught over 115,000 students, conducted over 53,000 water quality tests, and protected more than 300 acres in riparian land conservation easements. RFC is now entering a new chapter with a move to a brand new headquarters in Basalt, called the River Center, which the nonprofit says "is not just a building; it is an innovative concept to demonstrate, experience, and share the actions and interactions necessary to protect our exceptional rivers and watershed."

Located at Cozy Point Ranch in Snowmass Village, the Farm Collaborative (formerly known as Aspen TREE) is a place where budding young agriculturalists and children of all ages can be inspired to become better stewards of the environment. They can check out farm equipment, learn about ways to reverse the effects of climate change, and even work with the animals who live there. Much of this teaching takes place during the organization’s weekly Earth Keepers Community Day Camps, which are offered throughout the summer. Created by Aspen’s own singer-activist, the late John Denver, through his former Windstar Foundation once headquartered in Snowmass, the renewed camp is currently led by The Farm Collaborative’s executive director Eden Vardy and program director Lisa Kohlepp. The camp engages kids ages 5-11 in all sorts of positive hands-on activities, such as milking goats, feeding chickens, and petting llamas. CONNECTED BY FOOD It is one thing to know in theory that milk comes from an animal, but quite another to actually watch a baby goat nurse, and then get a chance to taste some of the milk (or maybe even cheese) yourself. The Farm Collaborative hopes to be an educational bridge that connects young people to their food sources. Children can sense that there is something similar between them and many of the animals (especially the energetic young goats) that also want to explore their world through play. As Vardy notes, “Animals are a tangible gateway to a nature connection, and allow us to engage with the world." CONTINUED >

GUIDED BY NATURE Chickens are another primary way to invite children into making more connections with their world. Who, for example, can resist wanting to touch the soft yellow fluffiness of a newly hatched chick? During camp, children are allowed to gently hold these fragile animals, see the rooster keep a watchful eye on his flock, and even gather eggs. This is a chore that is taken seriously, and done with care. Afterward, there is a certain pride associated with a job well done, and kids have something tangible to show Mom or Dad at the end of the day. It also drives home the message that these domesticated creatures are dependent on human beings treating them kindly and responsibly, in order to survive. ROOTED IN PLACE One animal that, while a transplant to this region, is able to not only survive but thrive at the farm’s elevation of 7,820 feet, is the llama. Children can feed the Farm Collaborative’s llamas plants that have been grown at the nearby FarmPark, and, once again, discover the satisfaction of taking care of another living organism. Of course, petting them is also encouraged, and during one of the weeks at camp, kids can learn about dyeing the animal’s soft wool to use it for various arts and crafts projects. Or, maybe they’ll notice the llamas doing something familiar: sticking out their tongues—or even spitting—when they are annoyed! Learning that animals have feelings can encourage the campers to develop greater empathy. In this way, the “E” in the contemporary STEM approach to education gains extra meaning: Not only are Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math important concepts, but also Empathy and Environmentalism. Educators in the Roaring Fork Valley can incorporate all these elements in interdisciplinary lesson plans for their students by taking them to the facilities (after a training) for free. A field trip, or regular visits to the Farm Collaborative can be full of positivity and gratitude: for children, for their world, and for our future. Vardy and his wife River Morgan lead by example, and their two young children Bija and Jasper are already avid farmers and environmentalists, spending memorable summer days with their parents at Earth Keepers camps. Once they reach 11 years of age, they may become part of the apprenticeship program, where they could mentor their peers by helping them, as Vardy says, to “zoom out from our human-centric world.” Camp founder Denver, whose songs about Colorado’s beauty continue to inspire millions to explore nature, surely felt the same about connecting community to farming and food, as reflected in one of his most popular tunes:

One simple solution, which seems intuitive but often isn’t, is that Mom should take time to care for herself as lovingly as she does her children and others in her life. Anyone who’s flown on an airplane knows that emergency protocol instructs parents to put their own masks on first, so that they can in turn help others around them. This same principle applies in everyday life: You just can’t pour from an empty cup. If you want to have plenty of love to share with your family, your own heart must first be filled. Brothers: We would go to C.A.R.E. every week to walk dogs, never with the intention to adopt. Then we met Cloe, and she adopted us! It was an amazing experience. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ADOPT HER? Brothers: She decided it for us! We met her and put the application in to hold her, and went back the next day with our whole family and everyone was sold. WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST THING YOU’VE DONE WITH YOUR PET? Adrian: When she goes over to the neighbors house and waits at the door for the neighbor’s dog to come and play. Oscar: When she plays hot potato with her treats, she throws it around and plays with it before eating it. DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT FOR KIDS TO GROW UP WITH A PET? Oscar: Yes because they learn responsibility, and that’s important when you grow up and have a family. WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT LIVING IN THE ROARING FORK VALLEY WITH YOUR DOG? Brothers: All the trails! IS CLOE SMART? Adrian: Yes, she will go through all the tricks she knows when my Dad gets some cheese out, without saying anything. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO TOGETHER? meet CHANCELLOR + THE COUVREAUX FAMILY The Couvreux family of Redstone, including mom Chloe and son Tao, adopted two-year-old bunny Chancellor in May 2018.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT ADOPTING FROM C.A.R.E.? Chloe: We loved the idea of adopting a pet who needed a home. My son’s favorite part is that he was “rescuing” a bunny; my favorite part was knowing that this bunny had been checked out by a vet and was healthy. Everything at C.A.R.E. felt right. I sent an email and someone got back to me right away. The staff was really welcoming and knowledgeable, and the animals looked happy. It was a no-brainer! WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ADOPT THIS PET? Chloe: The fun answer to why we picked a bunny is that our son Tao told us: “For my birthday I would like either a puppy, a baby sister, or a bunny.” After a visit to Rock Bottom Ranch, he really became serious about the bunny, and we decided we would do it for his birthday this year. I had said that to a friend, who one day sent me a text and told me C.A.R.E. had a bunny! We went the next day, and Tao fell in love with this bunny. We visited one more time, got everything we needed ready, and took him home the next week. DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT FOR KIDS TO GROW UP WITH A PET? Chloe: I do. I think it teaches responsibility and empathy for others, and more specifically so for fragile beings who depend on you. Playing outside so much and living in the Roaring Fork Valley, both our boys are in tune with protecting nature, the environment, and caring for the animals who live in it. Having an animal and feeling you are responsible for his well being is a big deal for a little kid. 28

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ADOPT THIS PET? Twins: Because they protect us and we love them. Mindy: To complete our family. HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT PICKLE WAS THE RIGHT CAT FOR YOUR FAMILY? Mindy: My son selected a kitten to take to C.A.R.E.’s annual blessing of animals that’s held every fall. He carried her out and sat with her through the whole event. I knew this kitten (Pickle) was something special and would be the perfect fit for our family. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR CAT'S NAME, AND DOES IT HAVE ANY SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE? Twins: We listed a bunch of names we like and when we got to Pickle, it just fit. Mindy: I call the kids my Peanuts, so Pickle was the next best thing. WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST THING YOU’VE EVER DONE WITH YOUR PET? Twins: Dress them up for Halloween. Mindy: Agreed. DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT FOR KIDS TO GROW UP WITH A PET? Mindy: Yes. meet Harrison + The Hadsock Family The Hadsocks of Glenwood Springs, including mom Theresa and brothers Tanner and Hunter, adopted dog Harrison in August 2012. They fostered Harrison before adoptingÂ him, and are now currently fostering a new kitten named Tic Tac.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ADOPT HARRISON? Theresa: We were a foster family to Harrison after the Thumper Fund paid for Harrison to have hip surgery on his left side. Harrison was to stay with us and receive physical therapy on his hip while recovering. One reason we decided to adopt Harrison was because even when he had 30 staples in his hip, he was great with our entire family during physical therapy. Harrison did not start walking on his leg until six weeks after surgery, yet, he remained happy and patient the entire time. HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT HARRISON WAS THE RIGHT PET FOR YOUR FAMILY? Theresa: When others were filling out adoption applications for him and we started panicking. We were already deeply in love with this dog and he was ours. Foster failure at its best! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITY TO DO TOGETHER? Theresa: Harrison loves to travel. We travel for hockey, lacrosse, and baseball as a family. When games are local or the hotels are pet friendly, we bring him along. He sees his gear being packed, gets in the car, and will not get out until we arrive at our destination. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT ADOPTING A PET FROM C.A.R.E.? Theresa: C.A.R.E. helped our family during a difficult time. We saw an ad in the paper that C.A.R.E. was looking for families to love and foster kittens. I thought the boys might benefit from something to love, cuddle, receive affection, and take care of while we were going through a transition.

It can be a long, chilly journey—sometimes literally. To reach an early Live Poetry Night in Aspen, one youth journeyed by bus all the way from Rifle in a blizzard. “From day one,” Zimet comments, “we encouraged people who never performed poetry to come.” It takes courage, so the Society ensures that the environment is welcoming and non-judgmental, in marked contrast to the competitive vibe of poetry slams. “These young poets are sharing some emotional parts of their lives,” Zimet notes. “One Sunday night a young woman talked about her impending surgery which could have resulted in the loss of her foot. We have laughed, too. One poem was about a men’s ‘birthing competition.’” "Rising Voices" has been supported by a grant from the Aspen Thrift Shop and received editorial assistance from Aspen Words. Board members Marjorie DeLuca, a poet/ editor/publisher, and Cameron Scott, a poetry teacher/ river guide, edited the volume with assistance from Zimet and Ellie Scott of Aspen Words. Alien (abridged) by Erica Massender Selected for publication in "Rising Voices" I was not born in the Milky Way. I was born in a galaxy of purple stardust and darkness. On a cold unfeeling planet made of rock, ice, and magma. My body made from synthetic plastic pieces. Spastic—and rusty—too tight on the neck and back, never quite fitting right. With a cold unwavering heart and lack of a soul. Sent to Earth by my own free will, I saw a planet full of warmth and chaos. Filled with humans that fought and loved and lived. Judging each other for the flaws in themselves that they never appreciated. Humans were like mirrors to other humans. Nothing made sense to me. Humans that dyed their hair to look more colorful than they were born to be. Humans that dressed in frilly clothes. Humans that dressed in baggy clothes. ... And immediately, immediately I was outcast because I was not like the humans. The ones with the painted-on faces judged me. The tall giants that had muscles the size of my head called me weak—and yet!— every human I saw came to me for comfort because unlike them I was steady and they were weak and wavering. Never have I understood the souls of humans—beautiful things… that broke like glass—how do you break a soul? How does another human break a soul of its own kind? It was an unnerving sight. I have found no way a measly alien—like me—could protect something so beautiful. Nothing an alien like me could do to save all the humans who still had a soul—broken and shattered, but a soul. … How could an alien save something that was never mine to save?

A poet, writer, artist, and performer, Massender will attend Colorado Mountain College this fall to study art and media. One day, she hopes to create animated television shows.
