Costumes are encouraged, but effort is not; race organizers stress that this is an event designed for the Average Joe. Snack stations and other fun surprises await participants along the race route. He aims through the scope with expert calm, arms taut with cool anticipation. Thunk. The arrow hits the target cleanly. His satisfaction is visible; what we can’t see, though, is his traumatic brain injury from a combat blast in Afghanistan which left him with anxiety, depression, and issues with memory, balance, and sleep. Before the next shot he pulls deep nasal breaths that move his belly. He stills the breath when it’s time to release the arrow. He’s learning breath progressions that help him hit the mark in archery, but the real aim of this retreat is to give him breath for healing at home. Since 2009 I’ve taught wellness for Challenge Aspen Military Opportunities (CAMO). CAMO offers adaptive sports camps to the ever-growing numbers of wounded veterans. We give holistic training in four areas: sleep, functional movement, nutrition, and breathwork. I use these methods to effectively self-regulate and heal from my own traumatic past. Breathing is the easiest to learn and brings the quickest results. Breath creates conditions for healing by oxygenating cells, increasing CO2 tolerance, regulating reactivity, and creating relaxed presence. In 2017 a retired veteran I worked with through CAMO inquired how breath could help with archery performance. I became his breath coach, and he, a Level 3 Archery coach, taught me to shoot. Breathwork gave him tangible relief from combat-related symptoms.

Plus, it’s addictive. After last summer, I bought a bow and have shot hundreds of arrows to put my own breath to the test. We are donating a day to breathe archery with civilians where all proceeds support CAMO. On Friday July 13, join us for a retreat day of yoga, breathwork, and archery for all levels held at CAMO’s Whispering Winds Ranch near Reudi Reservoir. The suggested donation is $500 for expert archery and applied breathwork training you’ll use for life. Emily Hightower has been an adventure and wellness guide for over 20 years. Her archery coach mentioned above served in the military for over 17 years and now competes internationally. NE W CASTLE’S COLOROW FLOW TRAILS Named after Chief Colorow of the Ute tribe, the new Colorow Flow mountain bike trails will offer beginners the chance to try their pedals at short climbs and fun downhill rides. It is one of the many projects undertaken by New Castle Trails (NCT). calf scramble. JIM HICKSON LOVED TO STAY BUSY. He had called the Roaring Fork Valley home since moving here from Virginia with his wife Mildred in 2002, after almost four decades working as a chemical engineer with DuPont. Jim was intent on enjoying all that the mountains have to offer, and he never allowed retirement to force him to sit still. “He loved hunting and fishing, and he flew model airplanes,” Jim’s daughter, Ellen Brooks, says. “He was an outdoorsman, a tinkerer— he built things and always had ideas. It was his engineer’s mind.” Jim stayed sharp by pursuing his many interests well into his golden years, so when he began experiencing speech difficulties, his family knew something wasn’t right. “He started losing his ability to speak well,” Ellen remembers. “Initially we thought it was due to a stroke, but he then also began having trouble walking. As things progressed, a neurologist determined that he had not suffered a stroke but in fact had a disorder called progressive supranuclear palsy.” Being diagnosed with this rare brain disorder meant that Jim’s problems with speech, balance, and movement would worsen over time. As his family considered the level of care that he would soon need, Ellen was concerned about finding a local facility where her father could receive the medical attention he required in a high-quality, homelike location. As soon as my father arrived, everyone was so kind to us. The aides truly cared about what was happening to him, because he progressed rapidly. They checked on him every hour.” O n May 5, Jim attended one of Peregrine’s many regular social activities, a Cinco de Mayo party, and even enjoyed a margarita. “That was his last really good day,” Ellen recalls. “We were there as a family with him—welcomed by the staff and encouraged to be present and spend time together. It meant a lot to us to have that.” Two days later, Jim passed.
