This issue is a celebration of space and the powerful role it plays in shaping how we live, gather, and experience our everyday lives. Thoughtfully curated spaces do more than look beautiful; they support the lifestyle we want and the life we are building.

My vision for River Oaks Lifestyle continues to be that it lives at the heart of your home. Each month, as the magazine arrives in your mailbox, I hope it becomes a trusted resource - one you return to for ideas, inspiration, and connection. Whether it’s a room that feels more intentional, a home designed to grow with your family, or a place that simply feels like you, the spaces we surround ourselves with matter.
This issue features exceptional partners who understand the art of creating meaningful spaces. You will find a beautifully curated feature on designer Emily Spanos, whose talent for mixing textures, color, and personal treasures results in interiors that feel layered, lived-in, and elevated. We also highlight Winfrey Design Build and Regal General Contractors, both known for their thoughtful approach to craftsmanship and creating homes that balance form and function. Additionally, you’ll find a feature on Hotel Daphne, a space that reflects how intentional design can elevate the hospitality experience.
Of course, food remains an essential part of home and lifestyle. Each month, our managing editor, Gabi De La Rosa, brings us “If You Eat One Thing,” spotlighting a standout dish that is always worth savoring.
Thank you for welcoming River Oaks Lifestyle into your home each month. I hope this issue inspires you to curate spaces you truly love.

DISCOVER A HOT CHICKEN SANDWICH LAYERED WITH IN-HOUSE MAC AND CHEESE, OPTIONAL SLAW, PICKLE CHIPS, AND CUSTOMIZABLE SPICE LEVELS.
The Finn, the chef-driven destination inside the Jones on Main building downtown, is home to Hot Peckers, the hot chicken concept from the team behind Fire Noodz. Hot Peckers serves hot chicken plates, sandwiches, and comfort dishes with six spice levels, ranging from no heat to the signature Peckin Fire. One of its most talked-about menu items is the Mac Daddy Sandwich, a build that brings several house-made ingredients together in one delicious, customizable, filling, and fun sandwich. hotpeckers.co m
One of the highlights of the Mac Daddy Sandwich is the hot chicken itself. According to Mark Tiu, co-founder and chef at Hot Peckers, “Our hot chicken is made with boneless chicken thigh, brined in-house to keep it extra juicy.” The chicken goes through a layered breading process that includes dry batter, wet batter, and then a second dry batter seasoned in-house. “The chicken is double-fried, first low, then hot, creating a crisp, crackly exterior that gives way to tender, flavorful meat,” Tiu says. Guests choose their own spice level, from mild to “our signature Peckin Fire, a slow-building, mouth-tingling heat made for true spice lovers.”
Mac and cheese is built directly into the sandwich, not treated as an afterthought. “Our mac and cheese is made in-house, starting with a combination of several cheeses melted down and seasoned with our house spice blend,” Tiu says. The decision to add it to the sandwich was very intentional. “It brings a rich, creamy contrast that softens the heat of the hot chicken while adding another layer of comfort and indulgence.” The result is an ingredient that evens out the spice rather than competing with it.
The Mac Daddy Sandwich features toppings that let guests customize each bite. “We serve our sassy slaw on the side so guests can choose how much to add,” Tiu explains. The slaw is slightly creamy with enough tang to cut through the heat. Sweet bread-and-butter pickle chips add acidity and sweetness. “Together, the slaw and pickles keep the sandwich indulgent yet balanced,” Tiu says.
Holding everything together is a Martin’s Famous Potato Roll slider bun. “They’re soft, slightly sweet, and sturdy enough to hold everything together without getting in the way of the flavors,” Tiu says. “Why fix something that isn’t broken?”

DESIGNER EMILY SPANOS COMBINES OLD AND NEW WITH COLOR TEXTURE AND PATTERN FOR ROOMS WITH STYLE AND PERSONALITY

Rooms that look collected over time, filled with current, vintage and antique furnishings and accessories fill the portfolio of Emily Spanos, founder of Emily June Designs.
“My style is timeless and layered. I’m textile-forward and like to get color and pattern early on and let it guide the rest of the project,” said Spanos, who has been named the March Leader In Design by the Houston Design District. “We’re all about making meaningful spaces that bring joy and soul to the home.”
For one client who loves lime green, the bright color was used in draperies as well as on a pair of chairs that sit in front of bookcases painted a deep blue-gray. A stained wood antique side table brings a little history and holds a dainty vase found in a local thrift store. A rug that had the perfect color but was too small for the space was placed on top of a larger natural fiber rug. The room is a mix of old and new, bold and subtle.
“I always want to incorporate natural materials, vintage finds and antiques. That really helps the look of the space not feel so sterile – like it all just came out of a furniture store. A lot of clients have a great art collection, and we like to incorporate that, too,” said Spanos.
A 4th-generation Houstonian and 2006 graduate of Baylor University, Spanos began her design career at a full-service drapery work room, then worked for Ethan Allen before helping builders with custom homes.
One custom home client asked her to help them furnish the home, and Spanos used that to launch her residential interior design business. She and her husband have two sons, an 8-year-old and a 15-month-old who’s taking his first steps.
She custom designs some pieces and shops trade-only showrooms, but she also scours thrift stores such as The Guild Shop and Bluebird Circle and is a regular at Round Top antique shows, especially for favorite vendors such as Joyce Horn Antiques and Janet Wiebe’s Murano glass chandeliers and lamps.
Her home shopping list frequently includes vintage and antique lighting, side tables, chests and small accessories, and it’s hard for her to pass up anything made of brass.
Spanos has three storage units filled with things she’s bought through the years and in April she hopes to hold a pop-up sale to scale back a decade’s worth of her own collecting.
Inspiration often comes from her travels. Her husband grew up in Greece, so visits there are frequent. A recent trip to London brought inspiration from Englishstyle architecture.
“Travel inspires me. The architecture, the castles, I think about those and reimagine them,” Spanos said. “Just looking at vintage pieces and seeing how they were made, I’m very inspired by that.”

“WE CAN POINT TO COMPLETED HOMES AND SATISFIED CLIENTS. THAT CONSISTENCY MATTERS, AND IT IS SOMETHING WE WORK TO MAINTAIN ON EVERY PROJECT.”
In Houston’s luxury home market, where there are many design firms to choose from and price alone is no longer a sign of quality, Winfrey Design Build has made a name for itself through consistency and experience. Founded by Bruce Winfrey, the firm operates under a model that brings architecture, construction, and project management together under one roof. The strategy allows the team to support clients through the whole process, from lot purchase and permitting to final finishes.
CONTINUED >
WITH DECADES OF EXPERIENCE, WINFREY DESIGN BUILD DELIVERS CUSTOM LUXURY HOMES SHAPED BY PRECISION AND TRUST.

Winfrey Design Build focuses on a limited number of projects at a time, typically four to five, enabling increased hands-on attention. The firm’s work is concentrated in Houston’s most established neighborhoods, including River Oaks, Memorial, and Tanglewood, where expectations are high. According to Winfrey, that environment calls for more than technical skill, but a discernment earned through years of experience.
“In a market where there are many luxury builders to choose from, experience shows up by striving to be the best and consistently outperforming the competition,” Winfrey says. “With my 38 years of experience in home building and the strong team members we have, we can give our clients better help throughout the process.”
The firm’s design-build structure plays an important role in that outcome. By managing both design and construction, Winfrey Design Build maintains tighter control over timelines, budgets, and details. It also creates a single point of accountability, something that is valuable to clients when projects are larger and more complex.
“Having design and construction under one roof allows for better coordination and communication,” Winfrey says. “It helps avoid surprises and keeps everyone on the same page from the beginning.”
According to Winfrey, those details are what really separate a well-built luxury home from one that carries a high price tag. While square footage and finishes may be easy to compare, the quality of execution is often much subtler.
“It comes down to the details.” he says. “There has to be a strong emphasis on fit and finish. A home can be expensive, but if the details are not right or the execution is not consistent, it will show.”
In recent years, knowledgeable clients have become more involved in those details, starting the process with clear preferences. Winfrey has seen growing interest in specialty finishes and handcrafted elements, particularly in areas once treated as secondary considerations.
“We are seeing more interest in handmade products such as tile, along with lighting systems and more advanced energy systems,” he says. “Solar generators and efficiency solutions are part of more conversations now. Clients are better informed and more engaged in those decisions.”
Cabinetry remains one of the most critical components, especially in kitchens and other high-use spaces. According to Winfrey, success in the luxury market depends on getting cabinetry right, both in function and execution.
“You have to be very good at cabinetry to be successful,” he says. “It affects how a home works and how it feels on a daily basis.”
Over the past several years, Winfrey Design Build’s projects have grown significantly in both size and price, a shift Winfrey attributes largely to referrals and long-term trust. Many of the firm’s clients come from previous homeowners who recommend the company after completing their own projects.
“We have been trusted with one of the biggest commitments people make,” Winfrey says. “We proved successful in building their homes, and that track record has helped us move into a higher level of work.”
At Winfrey Design Build, a typical project takes between 11 and 15 months to complete, depending on scale and complexity. Throughout that timeline, the firm handles not only construction but also coordination with homeowners' associations, a responsibility that can be time-consuming and unfamiliar to clients.
The firm’s growing focus on neighborhoods like River Oaks and Tanglewood is intentional. These areas, Winfrey says, demand a level of quality and attention that is consistent with the company’s standards.
Their growing reputation has led to high demand, including homes that sell before they are formally listed. In some cases, Winfrey Design Build markets homes before construction begins, offering buyers the opportunity to step in early and shape the outcome.

“We handle the lot purchase, the initial design, and the permitting,” Winfrey says. “When a buyer comes in early, they can customize the home to fit their lifestyle. They also save time because much of the groundwork has already been done.”
Buyers who are early in the process have significant influence over cosmetic and functional decisions. Plumbing, lighting, hardware, landscaping, and finishes can all be tailored, a process Winfrey describes simply as making the home their own.
In kitchens, demand continues to focus on function and longevity. According to Winfrey, back kitchens remain popular, along with open floor plans and high-quality cabinetry. Flooring choices tend to favor long-plank engineered wood, while slab backsplashes made of marble or granite remain a frequent request.
“Those are selections that tend to age well,” Winfrey says. “They are choices that stand the test of time.”
After nearly four decades in the industry, Winfrey views consistency as the company’s defining trait. The firm began in solid neighborhoods and gradually worked its way into Houston’s most competitive markets, guided by referrals and repeat trust.
“We have a strong track record with our homeowners,” he says. “We can point to completed homes and satisfied clients. That consistency matters, and it is something we work to maintain on every project.” winfreydesignbuild.com

A HEIGHTS STAYCATION HUB BLENDING DESIGN, DINING, AND NEIGHBORHOOD ENERGY.

A staycation at Hotel Daphne starts with location. Nestled in the Heights, the 49-room boutique hotel brings Bunkhouse Hotels into one of the city’s most walkable neighborhoods. Hotel Daphne is designed as a third space that works for visitors and locals. Guests are encouraged to move freely between the all-day restaurant and bar, the library, the courtyard, and the retail shop. The layout is meant to feel like an extended living room where plans are meant to be flexible.
The building itself feels like it's always been a part of the neighborhood, with oak trees framing the courtyard. A five-story brick structure with stepped parapets, steel windows, and painted brick draws on Arts and Crafts influences and on recycled industrial forms the Heights is known for.
Inside, handmade tile, layered textiles, antiques, and vintage finds appear throughout guest rooms and public spaces. Some rooms include private terraces overlooking the courtyard.
Hypsi, the hotel's restaurant, is led by chef Terrence Gallivan. The restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, with cocktails, Italian-style aperitivo, and a tableside mozzarella cart. The interiors are a nod to Houston’s prohibition-era history, and the courtyard is meant to serve as a social hub. For a staycation that stays close to home but feels completely removed from Houston’s typical vibes, Hotel Daphne fits the plan. hoteldaphnehtx.com

Moon offers Houstonians refined cocktails, shareable bites, and an otherworldly escape.
ARTICLE BY RIVER OAKS LIFESTYLE STAFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN KENNEDY
In Houston, where great cocktails often come with noise and crowds, Moon feels like a welcome respite.
Tucked above Tavola at BLVD Place, the new bar gives Houstonians a place to step out of the usual cocktail scene and settle into an evening that unfolds in a beautiful and tasty way.
Moon is part of a partnership between two hospitality giants, the Bastion Collection, boasting 10 Michelin Stars and three Michelin Keys since 2019, and Café Natalie, Houston’s off-site catering powerhouse.
At Moon, the cozy space plays with light, reflections, and shadows, creating a mood that shifts as the evening progresses. Greenery, crystal details, marble surfaces, and dark wood frame the bar, making it feel like a luxe escape from Post Oak traffic without losing its sense of energy.
Cocktails are the main draw, and the program is led by Rubén Rolón, whose work has earned recognition from the Michelin Guide and the James Beard Awards. Familiar drinks are often presented tableside in a way that feels natural and fun. It is the kind of menu that makes guests want to stay for another round.
The food is equally as delightful as the cocktails. Designed for sharing, the offerings lean toward elevated bites that pair easily with the bar menu. Didn’t order enough during the first round? Not a problem, nothing feels rushed, and that is part of the appeal.
As the night goes on, music and lighting subtly shift, taking Moon from early-evening cocktails to a late-night destination. For Houstonians looking for a beautiful place to drink well and eat thoughtfully, Moon delivers. barmoonhouston.com

Third-generation Texas contracting firm restores, protects, and elevates homes.
Regal General Contractors brings precision, communication, and respect to high-end residential restoration and renovation projects.
ARTICLE BY RIVER OAKS LIFESTYLE STAFF

In high-end residential construction, excellence is defined by precision, communication, and respect for the home itself. For more than 45 years, Regal General Contractors has built its reputation on those principles, restoring and renovating Houston’s most discerning properties with enduring craftsmanship.
Founded in 1978 by the Clark family, Regal is a third-generation, family-owned general contracting firm specializing in premium residential and commercial restoration and remodels. From water and fire damage to complex renovations, Regal approaches every project with thoughtful planning, expert execution, and a hightouch client experience.
“As a boutique contractor for luxury homes, we understand that craftsmanship matters at every level,” says Courtney Clark, Head of Marketing. “Restoring or renovating a premium home requires attention to detail, design fluency, and respect for the homeowner’s investment.”
Regal offers comprehensive restoration, remediation, and renovation services under one roof, allowing homeowners to work with a single, experienced team throughout the entire process. In 2000, Regal became one of the first contractors in Texas licensed to perform mold remediation, reinforcing its ability to manage complex projects seamlessly.
By collaborating closely with architects, designers, and a carefully vetted network of expert trades, Regal ensures consistency, accountability, and quality
“Restoring
from start to finish. The result is a streamlined process that balances craftsmanship with efficiency while maintaining clear communication at every stage.
High-end construction is personal, and Regal’s success is rooted in long-standing relationships with homeowners and industry professionals who repeatedly trust the firm with their most important projects.
“We guide homeowners through every step, from setting expectations to delivering a finished space that reflects their standards,” says John Dunn, Vice President and General Manager. “A home is one of the largest investments someone will make, and we take that responsibility seriously.”
That approach is especially important following a loss.
“Seeing your home damaged is emotional,” Clark explains.
“Our role is to bring clarity and reassurance while restoring the home to a condition that feels whole again.”
Regal is known for its rapid response and attention to detail— two qualities that protect the integrity of a home. Teams mobilize quickly following fire, water, or storm events to mitigate further damage and set the foundation for a thoughtful restoration.
Equally important is communication. Projects are managed with clear timelines, regular updates, and proactive
problem-solving, ensuring transparency and confidence throughout the process.
“Luxury clients expect a high level of service,” Dunn says. “That means staying accountable and delivering exactly what was promised.”
Working throughout Houston’s premier neighborhoods and exclusive communities, Regal completes everything from refined kitchen and bath renovations to large-scale restorations. Fully insured, financially sound, and supported by extensive industry certifications, the firm is structured for longevity.
Architect Scott Ziegler shares, “Our experience with Regal was exceptional. The quality of workmanship across every trade was first-class. There were no cost surprises, and we were very pleased with the end result.”
For Regal, reputation is a long-term commitment.
“Our reputation is an asset we intend to protect for the next 50 years,” Dunn says. “Homeowners and industry partners know they can rely on us for the long term.”
“At heart, we’re a family business serving families,” Clark adds. “Everything we do is about restoring, protecting, and elevating the places people value most.” regalgc.com

ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD

There’s a certain moment when a house stops feeling new and starts feeling like home. It isn’t marked by square footage or finishes alone. It is something quieter, more emotional. In this home, designer Kate Manz set out to do exactly that: give a newly built home a heartbeat and a soul.
Rather than treating the house as one sweeping statement, she approached each room as its own story, layered with meaning, memory, and texture. The result is a home that feels collected, personal, and deeply lived-in.
“Tackling each space and room as its own story and concept is how to make a new space feel personal,” Manz explains. “But bringing it all together cohesively is always the challenge.”
Her solution? Warmth, intention, and a strong belief in the power of people. In new builds it can take years for a home to shed its newness. For this project, the goal was to fast-track that sense of belonging by layering in pieces with history and heart. Vintage market finds, local artists, and meaningful objects play a starring role throughout the home.
“My love for design goes hand in hand with the people and stories that bring it to life,” she says. “I absolutely love seeing the evolution from concept to completion and all the elements and people that help bring those ideas to reality.”
That philosophy becomes especially important in the home’s expansive open-concept living area, where scale could easily overpower intimacy.

The entryway sets the tone with a simple but powerful goal: Welcome to my home.
Natural stone underfoot grounds the space, while a soft vintage rug and living greenery immediately soften the experience. Art with personal meaning invites guests to linger rather than rush through.
The main living space is defined by bringing the outside in with sweeping outdoor views and generous proportions. Rather than fighting that openness, embrace it.
“The big open concept room really highlights the expansive outdoor views,” she says, “but making intimate spaces within that open room was really important.”
A layered niche wall, created in collaboration with the interior architect Nick Flower, brings both structure and softness to the room. It introduces texture, depth, and a place for unique objects and family heirlooms to live, turning negative space into a personal gallery.
If there’s one place Manz encourages clients to take risks, it’s the powder room. Here, she leaned into terracotta earth tones, layering textures and tile sizes for visual interest and warmth. Patterned and solid tiles work together, while textured wall coverings and a sculptural stone sink elevate the space from functional to delightful.

Designed as a counterpoint to the openness of the main living area, the lounge is a cocoon, both peaceful, layered, and deeply versatile. It’s a place for reading, movie nights and slow mornings.
Rich tones and varied textures do the heavy lifting here, creating depth without heaviness. Soft lighting and custom upholstery make the room feel both intentional and effortless.
At its core, this home is a reminder that design isn’t about perfection, but rather it’s about feeling. By treating each room as its own narrative while weaving in warmth, history, and human connection, a space was created that already feels loved.
“My love for design goes hand in hand with the people and stories that bring it to life.”
