We u n d e rs t o o d w h at a rc h it e c t Jo h n St a u b h a d d o n e a n d u n d e rs t o o d it s ro ot s . – A rc h it e c t Ru s s e l l W i n d h a m When Bill Curtis and Russell Windham each moved to Houston in the early 1990s, the oil bust and recession of the 1980s was mostly in the rear view mirror and a large home commissioned by a wealthy Houston businessman had signaled to others that it was time to spend money again. Bill was a native of Longview and graduate of the University of Texas who had worked in San Antonio and Washington D.C., and Russell grew up in the Texas Panhandle and earned his degree at Texas Tech before working in New Haven, Conn., and London. A mutual friend recognized that both preferred to work in the classical tradition and thought their working styles would mesh, so he introduced them. “We got to Houston when the economy was just starting to go again,” Russell said. “We got to know what John Staub had done and understood its roots … since both of us had a deep background in traditional, sympathetic architecture. When we work in River Oaks, we want to blend in, not make a giant statement.” The two men formed Curtis & Windham Architects in 1992, and while they’ve done work all over the city, a good deal of their Houston work can be found in River Oaks, multi-million-dollar homes that often run 8,000 square feet to 15,000 square feet. Then there are the vacation homes they’ve created, in locales such as Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and the Bahamas. The firm began with just Bill and Russell, but today it has a staff of 35. In December they were inducted as the newest honorees in the Houston Design District’s Leaders In Design program.
“We had the pleasure of seeing River Oaks the way it was supposed to be and it taught us the discipline of working on different sites.” Bill said. “The River Oaks experience, and it continues to be that way, gave us the rudder to solve all kinds of problems.” When designing a new home, both men look for classical architectural precedent for details on the interior and exterior. That means sticking to what’s already been done in a traditional way although often in interesting combinations and luxurious materials. For example, when Bill visited France, he noticed tent-shaped guard houses at the Palace of Versailles. He and Russell have used them as a guide for striped buildings in a similar shape in clients’ gardens and entertaining spaces. “In architectural speak, we call them ‘follies,’” said Russell. “We’ve done lots of them in gardens as a complement to the house.” In 2018, Bill and Russell produced a monograph of their work, “A Vision of Place,” published by the Texas A&M University Press. They’re finishing up their as-yet unnamed second book now, an extension of the first book that is expected to publish in the fall of 2025 by Rizzoli. “There’s more eclecticism in our work, more than the French house on the cover (of the first book),” Bill said. “Our work varies in scale, expression and locale.” The new book will be a showcase for their architecture, but also will feature interiors from collaborations with renowned interior designers such as Charlotte Moss, Ann Wolf, Suzanne Kasler and Miles Redd, who wrote a foreword for the book.

ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SKY HIGH FOR KIDS
HITTING THE High Notes LED BY BRITTANY HEBERT FRANKLIN, SKY HIGH FOR KIDS WORKS TIRELESSLY TO SUPPORT CHILDREN UNDERGOING CANCER TREATMENT AND OTHER LIFE-THREATENING CONDITIONS.
What started as a challenge to raise $10,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital during Brittany Hebert Franklin’s college years has turned into a 510(c)(3) that raised $8.85 million to support children’s cancer research in 2024. Franklin pivoted from a successful career in oil and gas to the full-time CEO of Sky High for Kids. Now married, with a one-year-old and a hectic schedule, she is more determined than ever to make a difference in the lives of children battling cancer.
Sky High for Kids just wrapped up a very successful year, what are you most proud of? The launch of our Sunday Supper program was a great achievement. We have partnered with local Houston restaurants to cater 170 boxed meals for families battling childhood cancer at Texas Children’s Cancer Center, main campus. Our goal is to one day deliver meals every Sunday and expand our meal program to the Woodlands and Katy TCH campuses in the future.
“What we do takes grit, determination, and compassion, and I believe that is what defines Brittany Hebert Franklin, Founder and CEO of Sky High for Kids.

Sky High for Kids.” – Brittany Hebert Franklin
A lot has changed for you personally and for Sky High since it began in 2007. Now that you are juggling being married and having a little one, how do you handle your work/life balance? I don’t believe in work/life balance. It’s about mindset and juggling, and I do that by being a master scheduler. My husband and I both travel for our careers, and I have two extremely busy fundraising seasons. We have a Sunday night calendar conversation to ensure all bases are covered. When I was pregnant, my entrepreneur group gave me some of the best advice. “If you are going to be in a C-suite level position and be present for your family, you must build a bench.” Our “bench” consists of people who love and support our family. So, to all of the career mothers and those in demanding leadership roles, you can do it all.
How do you stay motivated to keep going when not every family has a happy and cancer-free ending? I have a never-give-up attitude, so when a child gains their angel wings, it only fuels my fire to work harder. Imagine if all the healthcare workers lost motivation every time there wasn’t a happy ending – that’s not an option for me, nor Sky High for Kids. Our vision is clear: we want to eradicate cancer in children, which results in an overall cancer-free world. We must gather the community to invest in research, treatment protocols, infrastructure, and direct services.
What are you most excited about for Sky High in 2025? Our leadership team and Executive Board have worked hard to set clear goals. We will focus on the expansion of our charity of choice, major gifts, and family member bundle divisions. We want to complete our $40M pledge commitments to Texas Children’s Cancer Center and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by writing the final checks on December 31st, 2027, our 20th anniversary. I am manifesting the “Triple Twenty!” skyhighforkids.org

WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL RECOMMENDATION FOR IMPROVING HEALTH AND WELLNESS?
Invisalign has proven effective for various dental concerns, including cosmetic and functional. Along with clinical benefits, Invisalign is comfortable and convenient and aids in maintaining optimal oral hygiene care during the course of treatment.
WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE PRODUCT YOU RECOMMEND TO ENHANCE HEALTH AND WELLNESS?
WHY DID YOU START WORKING IN THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS SPACE?
I am committed to educating on the importance of oral health because I come from a background where it wasn’t prioritized unless there was pain or discomfort. Since our mouth is the gateway to the rest of our body, keeping it free from disease can greatly enhance our overall health.
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE LATEST TRENDS?
The growing focus on looking and feeling one’s best. Teeth whitening, alignment treatments like Invisalign, and cosmetic dentistry are becoming more popular. A beautiful smile is now recognized as an aesthetic asset and a key factor in boosting self-esteem and personal well-being.
A waterpik can be a fantastic tool for cleaning hard-to-reach areas that floss might miss. While it’s important to continue practicing with traditional floss, a waterpik is a great complement to your oral hygiene routine.
HOW CAN PEOPLE START 2025 ON THE RIGHT HEALTH JOURNEY?
While you visit a dental professional several times a year, most care is in your hands. Establishing a consistent routine for maintaining your teeth at home is key. Plus, find a dentist you trust who knows your health history, works with you on a long-term solution to reach your dental goals, and is available to respond to your dental emergencies. bellairedentalsuite.com CONTINUED >

Dion & Cindy Ruzicka Co-Founders, Loyly Sauna Lounge
WHY DID YOU START WORKING IN THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS SPACE?
After Dion was diagnosed with lymphatic leukemia, we wanted to heal as naturally as possible. Dion tried deliberate cold exposure and, a year later, was feeling better than ever. Cindy had her own transformative experience after adopting daily contrast therapy. These experiences inspired us to create a space offering contrast therapy guided by an expert staff and a proven science-backed protocol in a community-centric wellness space.
WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL RECOMMENDATION FOR IMPROVING HEALTH AND WELLNESS?
Regulate your nervous system with daily practices – breathwork, sunlight, cold plunges, good sleep, and things that bring happiness.
WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE PRODUCT YOU RECOMMEND TO ENHANCE HEALTH AND WELLNESS?
Infrared saunas help us detox from chemicals we encounter in our modern lives. They recharge us on the cellular level, improve mental health, and act like a cardiovascular workout.
24
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS
IF YOU COULD ONLY RECOMMEND TWO HEALTH AND WELLNESS SERVICES OR MODALITIES, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?
Contrast therapy and fascia massage. Contrast therapy boosts circulation and lymphatic drainage to clear toxins from the body. Fascia is an overlooked system in our body. It’s connective tissue from our head to our toes, and when it’s in an unhealthy state, so is our body. Using tools to release your fascia tissue while in the sauna improves your overall health and appearance.
HOW CAN PEOPLE START 2025 ON THE RIGHT HEALTH JOURNEY?
Prioritize wellness. Contrast therapy relaxes the body, regulates the nervous system, gives you a boost of energy and feel-good hormones, and helps you sleep better so you have the motivation to take on your goals. loylysaunalounge.com

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE LATEST HEALTH AND WELLNESS TRENDS?
EMS training is leaning into technology and data. Combining the regular InBody composition analysis with the custom dialed-in 15-minute full-body workout, each client gets a bespoke, tailored, and optimized experience.
WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL RECOMMENDATION FOR IMPROVING HEALTH AND WELLNESS?
Use gym typologies for optimal fitness and, of course, EMS training.
WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE PRODUCT YOU RECOMMEND TO ENHANCE HEALTH AND WELLNESS? WHY DID YOU START WORKING IN THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS SPACE?
I started working out at Manduu when I was visiting Nashville. Since college, I have been serious about fitness and exercise. In addition to working out with electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) at Manduu, I do traditional strength training three times per week.
WHY ARE YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT WORKING IN THIS INDUSTRY?
The main reason I got involved with Manduu is because it works. So many gyms and workouts get stale and are only as good as what you put into them. Manduu is different because it is fast (15 minutes), reliable, and results are visible. Most of our customers become evangelists, and almost all our new business is word-of-mouth.
Anyone can buy a continuous glucose monitor like the Libre Freestyle 3 at a pharmacy without a prescription. Learning about your body, how it reacts to certain stimuli, and how you can intervene provides a lot of self-knowledge for your wellness journey.
IF YOU COULD ONLY RECOMMEND TWO HEALTH AND WELLNESS SERVICES OR MODALITIES, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?
EMS and stretching. I am an addict at Stretch Lab. It is a fabulous, consistent product and additive to anyone’s life. manduu.com CONTINUED >

Maricela Olivo (CEO, COO), Ashley Escobar (CSO, COO) Montrose Med Spa
WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL RECOMMENDATION FOR IMPROVING HEALTH AND WELLNESS?
Take a holistic, personalized approach that integrates physical and mental wellness, leveraging the latest advancements in non-invasive therapies, technology, and self-care. Balance aesthetic treatments, fitness, recovery, and mental health tailored to the individual’s specific needs and goals.
IF YOU COULD ONLY RECOMMEND TWO HEALTH AND WELLNESS SERVICES OR MODALITIES, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?
WHY ARE YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT WORKING IN THIS INDUSTRY?
Ashley and I want to make a difference in people’s lives, helping them feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally by blending advanced medical technology with holistic treatments.
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE LATEST HEALTH AND WELLNESS TRENDS?
The rise of advanced, non-invasive therapies like EMSCULPT NEO and EMFACE offer accessible, effective, and personalized treatments as clients seek faster, safer, and more efficient ways to improve body composition. Recovery-focused therapies like cryotherapy, infrared saunas, and compression therapy support muscle recovery, reduce soreness, and boost circulation, helping people feel rejuvenated and ready for the next challenge.
26
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS
EMSCULPT NEO treatment combines high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM) with radiofrequency (RF) to burn fat and build muscle simultaneously. In just a few quick, painless sessions, you’ll be burning fat and building muscle simultaneously. It’s perfect for tackling those tricky areas that don’t seem to budge, no matter how many crunches you do. EMFACE strengthens, lifts, smooths, and tightens your facial muscles without needles or downtime, leaving you looking fresh and rejuvenated.
HOW CAN PEOPLE START 2025 ON THE RIGHT HEALTH JOURNEY?
Map out what you want to achieve this year. Having a clear goal keeps you motivated. montrosemedspa.com
Kathleen Szelei-Stevens MD & Owner. Optimal Wellness and Lifestyle Balance
WHY DID YOU START WORKING IN THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS SPACE?
I have been a physician since 1995 and have seen patients interested in non-pharmaceutical methods to enhance their health.
WHY ARE YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT WORKING IN THIS INDUSTRY?
I want everyone to know that they have power over their health that can usually be achieved naturally. At 40, I was feeling tired despite living healthily. I explored natural remedies, took multivitamins, Vitamin D, fish oil, and added adaptogens for stress management. I switched to resistance training and stretching, and completed fellowship training in integrative medicine, blending Eastern and Western practices.
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE LATEST HEALTH AND WELLNESS TRENDS?
Personalized medicine. For example, some people need help with stress, whereas others need an immune system boost. New apps monitor vital signs and health indicators, assisting physicians in offering recommendations.
WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL RECOMMENDATION FOR IMPROVING HEALTH AND WELLNESS?
Get out and move. You get old because you stop moving. Some people with mobility issues can do chair exercises to maintain health and well-being.
WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE PRODUCT YOU RECOMMEND TO ENHANCE HEALTH AND WELLNESS?
Have an annual physical with lab work, follow a healthy diet, take at least a multivitamin and Vitamin D3, and exercise daily.
IF YOU COULD ONLY RECOMMEND TWO HEALTH AND WELLNESS SERVICES OR MODALITIES, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?
Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables and walk at least 30 minutes daily.
HOW CAN PEOPLE START 2025 ON THE RIGHT HEALTH JOURNEY?
Take it one day at a time. Do what you can, when you can. Consistency is key. owlbalance.com

Royce Bowman has designed individual physical therapy plans for Houston-area patients for more than 25 years. Now, as the founder and owner of Bowman Physical Therapy, in partnership with OakBend Medical Center, he continues to bring cutting-edge technology, education, and personal care to healing. While modern medicine has evolved, patients choose Bowman Physical Therapy for attentive and personalized services. Care starts with a scheduling phone call, where patients talk to a long-time care team member versus a scheduling call center and patients are scheduled within 48 hours of the initial call. The Friendswood and River Oaks outpatient facilities are easily accessible and have free parking. Upon arrival, patients may be happy to see there is not a designated waiting room like traditional facilities. Staff are expecting patients upon arrival to make them comfortable before exercising. "We want you to feel welcome and cared for from the moment you choose us as your physical therapy partner," says Bowman. As a practicing physical therapist, Bowman ensures all clients know their care teams by name. Therapists and technicians stay involved throughout each session, and time restrictions do not limit session visits. Central to the philosophy of care is education. Bowman explains, "I fell in love with the concept of physical therapy because I enjoy teaching. I teach patients how to do certain exercises or perform certain functions. I teach parents about their child's injury or why they have a recurring problem. I'm teaching, guiding, and helping people regain their quality of life." The more someone understands the reasons behind their exercises and treatment, the more successful therapy will be. A third facility is on the horizon. "We listened to our patients' requests to have a location in the Heights." With this additional
“We are changing the narrative of medical care. You are not a number at our facilities. We want to go the extra mile in your rehabilitation journey.” – Royce Bowman

space, Bowman Physical Therapy can serve a larger audience with the highest-quality physical therapy in Houston. Treatment at the facilities combines modalities with scientifically proven treatment strategies. "It's important for our staff of physical therapists and technicians to stay at the forefront of physical therapy by continually updating our knowledge and skills with the latest evidence-based practices. From advanced techniques to trending treatment innovations, we're committed to providing our patients with the most effective, modern care." The facilities feature state-of-the-art equipment, open gym space, and private treatment rooms. For equipment, each location features a GenuEase machine. This revolutionary device rehabilitates knees by letting the patient control their movement. By controlling their movement, patients have a decreased level of apprehension and a quicker road to recovery. Bowman Physical Therapy is one of Houston's few clinics offering this technology.
From manual therapy and blood flow restriction therapy to dry needling and biofeedback, the practice provides services to help with ankle, back and neck, hip, knee, and shoulder pain, sports injuries, and gait and balance disorder. The team works with pediatric to geriatric patients. Its mission is to restore Houston residents to a fuller quality of life. The team's reputation in Houston is strong. Hundreds of 5-star reviews online support Bowman Physical Therapy's patient experience and family-oriented culture. Patients love the upbeat, supportive, and positive environment. One five-star review complimented the team by calling out "Excellent service. All staff members are friendly and caring. They do not go by the clock to help you." More than 25 years later, excellence in patient care drives Royce Bowman. "We are changing the narrative of medical care. You are not a number at our facilities. We want to go the extra mile in your rehabilitation journey." bowmanphysicaltherapy.com JANUARY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / R I V E R OA KS
