Celebrating Women

May 2022 PUBLISHER

Alan Eixman | Alan.Eixman@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Christa Eixman | christa.eixman@citylifestyle.com

As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in herself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing is so beautiful. The woman who has inspired me the most is my mother, Carol Harper. After a car crash left her with devastating injuries, she still found the strength to get up every day and take care of me. She raised me to have strong faith, pursue my dreams, and be fiercely independent. She also taught me that the only limitations in life are the limitations I put on myself. I am forever grateful for her in my life, and I am blessed to be able to spend Mother's Day with her this year! In this month's issue, we are sharing stories of women who have inspired, not only me but also the community around them. I am excited for you to read about each one! We also feature Dermatologist, Dr. Neil Farnsworth, who gives us some tips on having beautiful skin. Realtor Martha White shares her expert advice on getting your house ready to sell, and we introduce you to the sounds of Tejano Soul featuring Austin-based band, Nuevo. Lastly, read all about one of downtown's most beautiful steakhouses, Guard and Grace. In a world that thrives on competition, let's take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up. I also encourage you to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact. You won't regret it. STROKES: THE IMPORTANCE OF TIMELY TREATMENT Vascular neurologist Dr. Sunil Sheth is associate professor and director of the Vascular Neurology Program and co-director of the Vascular Neurology Fellowship Program at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He is affiliated with Memorial Hermann and specializes in treating patients who have experienced stroke. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, someone in the U.S. has a stroke every 40 seconds; every four minutes, someone dies of stroke. Fortunately, it is possible to reduce the impact a stroke has on your wellbeing by getting treated as quickly as possible at the right healthcare facility. Sheth, a vascular neurologist who treats stroke patients at Memorial Hermann daily, shares what you should know about strokes, including when and where to receive treatment.

Q: What is a stroke? Are there different types?

A: A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted and remains interrupted, causing brain tissue to die. Broadly, there are two types of strokes: ischemic and hemorrhagic. An ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel is blocked by a blood clot, preventing blood supply from making its way to the brain properly. Ischemic strokes are the most common type and account for 87 percent of all strokes, according to the American Stroke Association. The other type of stroke is a hemorrhagic stroke, which occurs when a blood vessel in part of the brain bursts, causing blood to leak into the brain. There are multiple stroke risk factors everyone should be aware of. Those with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, obesity, a family history of stroke, as well as those who are smokers, participate in illegal drug use or have an unhealthy diet are all at an increased risk.

Q: What are the signs and symptoms of a stroke?

A: There are multiple symptoms of a stroke you should know for yourself and for others who are at risk. We use the acronym “BE FAST” to help you remember the warning signs, and it’s important to note that you can experience one or multiple symptoms if you’re having a stroke.

B E F A

ALANCE – Did they show a sudden loss of balance or coordination?

YES – Are they experiencing sudden double, blurred, or loss of vision?

ACE – Does their face droop on one side when smiling?

RMS – Are they experiencing weakness or numbness in their arms or legs? Does one side drift downward when arms and legs are raised?

S

PEECH – Do they have slurred speech? Are they hav i ng t rouble spe a k i ng cle a rly or comprehending speech?

T

IME – The most important thing you can do is call 911 immediately if any of these symptoms are present. These symptoms are often subtle. Pain is not a common symptom of a stroke, so many patients experiencing one aren’t as alarmed because it doesn’t hurt. While hemorrhagic strokes can cause pain, it’s not a consistent phenomenon.

Q: What should you do if you or someone you’re with is experiencing a stroke?

A: Timely treatment is everything when it comes to strokes, hence the acronym “BE FAST.” The longer you wait, the longer the brain doesn’t have access to blood flow and the more damage can occur. False alarms are never harmful, so if you or someone you’re with is exhibiting any warning signs, the most important thing you can do is to call 911 as soon as possible. If you’re experiencing the stroke, don’t drive yourself to the closest emergency room — call 911 instead. EMS personnel are trained in pre-hospital screenings and will know the closest hospital equipped to handle stroke patients. Going to a hospital that doesn’t have physicians with expertise in strokes or available treatment options can be detrimental to a patient. Memorial Hermann has four certified Comprehensive Stroke

Centers and six Primary Stroke Centers, which are the best places to go if you or s ome one you k now i s experiencing a stroke. All of M e m o r i a l H e r m a n n ’s Comprehensive and Primary Stroke Centers are fully Sunil Sheth, MD prepared to take care of any Vascular Neurologist stroke patient with the most innovative and effective treatment options and the most highly trained, multidisciplinary stroke teams.

Q: What treatment options are available?

A: Memorial Hermann offers the most advanced stroke imaging and treatment options for patients. Our stroke teams carefully and quickly assess which treatment option is best based on the type of stroke the patient is having. We also utilize an innovative platform that uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to quickly detect patients with large blood vessel obstructions. The technology can then alert and mobilize the stroke team members, which saves precious time in care coordination. Importantly, Memorial Hermann provides robust treatment for ischemic strokes, the goal of which is to open the clogged blood vessel as quickly as possible. Treatment options include intravenous alteplase, which is a medication that dissolves blood clots. We also offer endovascular therapy that involves weaving small catheters into the arteries of the brain to extract a large clot. Sometimes, alteplase and endovascular therapy are used together depending on the patient’s specific stroke. With hemorrhagic strokes, patients should get treatment immediately, as these strokes are more lifethreatening. Treatment usually involves lowering blood pressure or sometimes surgery. In summary, time is crucial when treating strokes. The sooner you get treated, the better outcome you may have, and many patients can actually be restored to their normal selves after timely treatment. Conclusion: Memorial Hermann’s stroke centers throughout Houston are highly equipped to assess and treat any stroke patient.

Happier And Healthier Skin At Any Age ARTICLE BY CHRISTA EIXMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY WESTLAKE DERMATOLOGY

Dr. Neil Farnsworth shares his expert advice on maintaining healthy skin in your 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond

16

M UST SE E | BEAU TY

Dr. Neil Farnsworth

We know staying out of the sun and moisturizing is good for our skin, but at what point do we need to kick our skincare up a notch? Does our routine need to change as we age? We asked Dr. Neil Farnsworth, a board-certified dermatologist at Westlake Dermatology, to share his expert advice.

WHAT HAPPENS TO OUR SKIN AS WE AGE? Over time our skin thins and loses the collagen and elastic fibers that had given it suppleness and resilience, leading to fine wrinkles, crepey texture, and easy bruising. Ultraviolet rays are a primary driver of these changes, causing discoloration, broken capillaries, enlarged oil glands, and premalignant and malignant lesions.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR WOMEN IN THEIR 20S AND 30S? I advise my younger patients that they have the invaluable opportunity at their stage in life to prevent signs of sun damage in their later years. They should be using a daily moisturizer every morning with broad-spectrum sun protection of SPF 30 or above and reapply again in the afternoon. If they are going to be in the sun, wearing sun-protective clothing and broad-brimmed hats can minimize the deep-penetrating UV radiation.

DOES THIS ADVICE CHANGE AS WE GET INTO OUR 40S AND 50S? As women reach middle adulthood, undoing existing photo-damage is essential. The backbone of any regenerative and restorative regimen is a topical vitamin-A derivative called a retinoid. Prescription and non-prescription strength retinoids can undo cellular changes brought on from UV exposure, lighten dark spots, and thicken the collagen and elastin of the dermis to improve texture and thickness.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW AS WE ENTER OUR 60S? For patients in their 60s and beyond, the ability of the skin to retain moisture becomes increasingly compromised. Cleansers that have been used for decades may become intolerable, and moisturizing all over needs to become part of one's daily routine.

ARE THERE COMMON SKINCARE MISTAKES WOMEN TEND TO MAKE REGARDLESS OF AGE? Perhaps the most common mistake I see is falling for the allure of "natural" personal-care products. Natural plant extracts commonly cause irritation and even allergic responses. I remind my patients that seasonal pollen, poison ivy, mercury, uranium, and grizzly bears are all "natural", but not so good for your skin. Processed and chemical-sounding ingredients shouldn't be feared, as most of the incredible advances in rejuvenation, sensitivity, and protection have come from cosmeceutical laboratories. Dr. Neil Farnsworth is a board-certified dermatologist who has practiced the full range of medical and surgical dermatology since 2010. He completed his internal medicine internship at Tulane University Medical Center and his dermatology residency at LSU Health Sciences Center. He is also a graduate of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Westlake Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery, is a private, physician-owned practice with 17 locations statewide, with its second Houston location opening this summer at 3636 Westheimer Road in River Oaks For more information, visit www.westlakedermatology.com.

Tahchiona Smith Pilot Raiders Tigers Flying Club

It was 5 p.m., and the sun was setting. The sky was clear and the wind calm — the perfect day for 17-year-old Tahchiona Smith to take her first solo flight. “It was surreal,” the now 25-year-old Tahchiona recalls. “I was like, ‘You know what? I can do this.’ It gave me a boost of confidence that I was doing what I was supposed to do.” The moment was also special because she’s now one of the few Black female pilots in the United States. According to Sisters of the Skies, there are fewer than 150 Black women who are professional pilots. While growing up in Houston, Tahchiona dreamed of becoming a pilot. She remembers going with her grandmother to watch planes take off and land at Houston’s Hobby Airport as a child. At 16 — while her peers were driving cars for the first time — Tahchiona started flight training. In fact, she took her first solo flight before learning how to drive a car and getting a driver’s license. Now she is a professional pilot for JSX. She also mentors aspiring pilots as a flight instructor with the Raiders-Tigers Flying Club, a nonprofit bringing diversity to aviation by offering low-cost flight lessons. “I think it’s important to see people who look like you, doing the things you want to do,” she says. “That’s why I do a lot of mentoring. Every day I get to talk about my path, that’s an opportunity to be able to reach one and teach one.” Learn more at raiderstigersflyingclub.org.

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

As 11-year-old Yuliya Kozhushanova glided across the ballroom floor during a dance audition in Portugal, the instructor noticed something special about the Ukrainian girl, who had only started dancing that year. The instructor told Yuliya’s mom how talented Yuliya was and that she needed to pursue a competitive dance career. By age 12, she was competing professionally. Fast forward to 2022, and that young girl is now a 27-year-old world champion ballroom dancer. But how did she get here? Yuliya started dancing when her family immigrated from Ukraine to Portugal. She practiced day and night to perfect her technique. While this meant sacrificing school holidays and family vacations, it was a small price to pay to become a professional ballroom dancer. “I was — and am — in love with dancing,” she says. Three years ago, she moved to Houston, where she met her husband, Dmitriy. In 2021, they

opened a dance studio — Dance Life Houston — where they teach others how to dance. “My favorite part about teaching is that first lesson where my student tells me that he or she can’t dance and has two left feet,” she says. “I know that after a few lessons my student will impress others, but they don’t know it yet.” Yuliya has also turned her passion into a mission to help people in Ukraine impacted by the war. While Yuliya has learned her grandmother, who lives in Mariupol, is safe, the Kozhushanovas want to help get food and supplies to people in need. They are hosting free group dance lessons and accepting donations. “It’s terrible what is happening,” Yuliya says. “But we need to be strong and do what we can to help. Even if it’s just $1 every person can give, it’s enough.” To donate, call 731-408-6445 or email dancelifehouston@gmail.com.

“Let food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.” Many of us are familiar with this quote by Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, type 2 diabetes and heart disease are two of the leading causes of death in the United States. But did you know these conditions can be managed and often prevented with a healthy, balanced diet? Laura Moore, director of the University of Texas Health Science Center at the UTHealth School of Public Health Nourish program, is passionate about holistic nutrition. Her expertise is in nutrition, culinary arts and community garden education. However, her first passion was food and began while training at the Le Cordon Bleu culinary school. As a dietitian and chef, she knew a lot about food but not how to talk to patients in a practical way to help them make healthy lifestyle changes.

24

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

After completing her master’s in education, her goal was to promote nutrition education that was sensible, practical and accessible for all people. So, her goal was to create resources to provide students, dietitians and other healthcare providers with the nutrition education and culinary skills necessary to teach patients and community members how to prevent health issues resulting from poor eating habits. The Nourish program features a food garden, teaching kitchen and simulation center, making it the first school of public health to have such a program. The additional components offer students a wide range of hands-on experiences that enable them to help people live healthier lives. About three years ago, the idea to publish a fundraising cookbook was born. In December 2021, “How Good Food Works: From Seed To Plate” launched. Proceeds from book sales are dedicated to the Nourish program’s classes offered in underserved communities. Learn more at sph.uth.edu/research/centers/ dell/nourish.

Terry Jones was 7 when he decided to help make his mom’s dream a reality. As a single mom, bilingual educator and school principal-in-training living in Houston, Kerlin Sabogal didn’t have much money but felt it was time to start a nonprofit to help underserved youth. Terry knew his mom needed money to open a bank account for the organization and offered to donate $40 of the $80 he saved from his allowance, making him the first donor of The Courage to Bee, Inc. “I always tell people you need to start from where you are with what you have,” Kerlin says. “There is never going to be a perfect opportunity to start something. You just need to do it. That’s exactly what I did, and my son was the first donor.” A former journalist, Kerlin came to the United States from Colombia in 2009, determined to learn English and build a career in education. The idea for The Courage to Bee,

Inc. was born while traveling solo around the world and visiting impoverished countries. The nonprofit helps build a path to quality education for at-risk youth by providing free basic school supplies and life essentials, access to technology, and skill-building workshops. In 2019, Kerlin visited the Dominican Republic and saw there were students in need of help. In 2020, a pilot project launched in Houston, benefiting students in the local community and the Dominican Republic. Since then, the nonprofit has reached 500 students across four regions and is preparing to start its second pilot project in Houston. Terry is now 10 and his generous donation is a reminder that it only takes one small step to make a big impact. “Many people think they need millions to give back, but you don’t have to have a lot to give,” Kerlin says. “You just need to give.” Learn more at thecouragetobee.org. Queen of Houston JOANNE HERRING TO RECEIVE UN WOMEN FOR PEACE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

H OW TO | L IFE + CU LTU R E

While growing up in Houston’s affluent River Oaks community, Joanne Herring had the luxury of living in a big house. But that luxury did not extend to Joanne’s commute to River Oaks Elementary School, where her good friend and former Secretary of State James Baker and Howard Hughe’s family went. “We all grew up together and a lot of people had chauffeurs and people to take them to school,” she recalls. “My family actually had somebody who could have taken me to school, but they made me walk, which I thought was quite beneath me.” She remembers how her father would make her saddle her horse. “One morning, I was saddling my horse, but there was a rattlesnake,” she says. “I screamed, ‘Daddy, there is a rattlesnake.’ He said, ‘Kill it.’” Surprised by his response, Joanne had to make sure she heard her father right, saying, “Kill it? Me?” When he simply replied, “Yeah,” she asked him how. “He said, ‘Get that hoe over there and kill it,’” she remembers. “I thought, ‘My big, strong daddy is telling me to kill a snake. Why doesn’t he kill the thing,” but I found the hoe, and killed the snake.” But it turns out it wasn’t a rattlesnake, but a king snake. “If it had been a rattlesnake, he would have killed it,” she says.

“He wanted me to see that I could do it, and it was quite the lesson for the rest of my life. I figured if I could kill that rattlesnake when I was 10, I could do about anything.” She has proved that time and time again over the years and will be honored by the UN Women for Peace Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her work to end violence against women and girls and promote peace worldwide. A global activist, international socialite and author, she has led quite the charmed life, having been portrayed by Academy Award-winning actor Julie Roberts in “Charlie Wilson’s War.” Her key role in arranging arms support for Afghanistan was vital to the fall of the Soviet Union and led to her nomination for a U.S. Congressional Gold Medal. She was also the host of one of the highest ranked shows in the country. She hosted the Joanne King Show on KPRC and KHOU for 15 years where she regularly featured interesting women as guests. The UN Women for Peace Association’s annual luncheon will be held on May 3 in New York, where she will be honored for her continuing fight against human trafficking where the overwhelming majority of the victims are women and children.

She will also be honored for creating The Marshall Plan Charities for Afghanistan. The concept of rebuilding war-torn Afghanistan one village at a time has been so successful that it has been replicated in 3rd world countries all over the globe. The first one grew from 10,000 to nearly 100,000 people. The program, which provides clean water, food, health care, education and jobs, has been successful in helping starving war victims survive and flourish where they are. James Baker describes Joanne as “a flash of light in a dark world,” reminding us what is possible with perseverance and a little charm. Joanne continues to work ceaselessly and passionately to coordinate programs with existing organizations to end human trafficking and other violent acts - including organ harvesting - against children and young adults worldwide.”

Chef Troy is a world-traveling culinary artist who has crafted his menus based on a lifetime of worldly experience. He discovered his love for cooking while growing up in Hawaii, surrounded by fresh ingredients. After working his way up from a dishwasher, Chef Troy became a sous chef under the instruction of chef Roy Yamaguchi. From there, he began traveling worldwide, including China and Japan, learning about different cuisines and flavors. Opening TAG Restaurant Group out of Denver back in 2009, Chef Troy has been growing his restaurant empire ever since. He has won numerous awards, including “Great Regional Chefs of America” by the James Beard Foundation. He is also involved in the Beard House’s non-profit organization, dedicated to ensuring all in the culinary industry have the opportunity to thrive. In 2019, Chef Troy opened his first restaurant in Downtown Houston, Guard and Grace, named after his daughter. The interior is gorgeous, decorated with luxurious furnishings and stunning architecture. Natural light pours through the building during the day, and spectacular city views shine through in the evening. Suspended from the ceiling are 4,600 bronze rods hanging at various lengths, creating an artistic masterpiece that dazzles throughout the dining area. The menu lists an array of delectable appetizers, including a charcuterie board and ahi tuna. One of the more popular entrees is the filet mignon flight, consisting of prime, angus, and wagyu beef. Sides are portioned generously and designed to share. Be sure to save room for one of Chef Troy’s signature desserts. A versatile venue that hosts date nights, business meetings, and even family dinners, a meal at Guard and Grace is one you do not want to miss.

4 Ways to Increase

Your Home Value Realtor, Martha White, shares her tips to make your home look its best and impress future home buyers.

Martha White is a Better Homes and Gardens Gary Greene Post Oak Agent and a consistent Top Producer. Martha has three adult married children and seven grandchildren age five and younger! She says being a mom is a true gift from God, giving her patience, flexibility, compassion, maturity, and more insights into what is truly important in life!

Homeownership can be an excellent investment, but what is the best way to maximize returns? Sellers often fear choosing updates that a potential buyer might not like, so they instead offer allowances to buyers when it is time to sell. According to realtor Martha White, that is not the way to go. “Buyers today want repairs and updates generally done,” says Martha, “updates or improvements with today’s materials lend to a much quicker sale at a higher price!”. We asked Martha which upgrades she recommends doing right now to increase the value of the home.

Kitchen Remodeling your kitchen will likely be one of your most expensive projects, but it pays to spend money on a room you use every day! The average cost of a kitchen remodel is about $50,000 on top of appliances and furniture, but it adds even more to the resale value.

Bathroom Bathroom upgrades, especially the master, are critical for increasing your home value but are frequently overlooked. Hiring someone to install new fixtures, such as a sink faucet or toilet seat, will make your bathroom look brand new without spending too much money.

Lighting Fixtures We know that lighting is one of the first things you notice when you walk into a room. Updating them can also be a great way to energize the space and create better moods and feelings.

Front Door Front doors need to be a WOW. Because your front door is the focal point of your home’s exterior, it’s critical for increasing curb appeal. Steel and glass are very popular, and even a pop of color on the front door appeals to today’s buyers. Before you officially put your home on the market, Martha also recommends having clean windows, repainted walls, and freshened landscaping.

Smooth Confidence OIL AND GAS TRIAL LAWYER LAUREN VARNADO EXPLAINS WHY SHE LOVES FIGHTING FOR THE UNDERDOGS. Lauren Varnado calls herself a pit bull, and for good reason. A young female in the oil and gas industry – a bit of an anomaly, even in 2022 – Varnado was recently named Managing Partner of the Houston office of Michelman & Robinson, LLP. She opened the office just two months ago, but she hasn’t missed a beat when it comes to representing her clients. Her current caseload totals over a billion dollars in potential exposure, and she attributes that to her expertise in the energy industry. “Any lawyer in Houston can take on an energy case, but that’s not the same as knowing and understanding the contracts, issues and transactions that drive the production of oil and gas,” she says. “This is my niche.” The tougher the case, the more interested Varnado becomes. “Client service is everything,” she says. “Being on the attack for the client, taking on challenging cases in tough jurisdictions, when the client feels like their back is against the wall – that’s when I’m at my best.” As a trial lawyer representing oil, gas and petrochemical clients in high-stakes commercial litigation, Varnado handles fraud and tort actions, lawsuits alleging environmental contamination, international and domestic arbitrations between energy producers, and class action royalty lawsuits.

A native Houstonian who graduated from Woodlands High School, Varnado attended Texas A&M and South Texas College of Law in Houston. Just one year into law school she had her first son, Jack, now 12, and still managed to graduate Valedictorian. During her clerkship at Fulbright Jaworski, she discovered her love for the energy sector and has spent the last 11 years litigating oil and gas disputes. Four years ago, she welcomed her second son, Jett, continued her upward trajectory, and is now leading the charge for Michelman & Robinson in Houston. “It says something that Lauren, who’s just 38 years old, is leading our Houston office,” says Sanford Michelman, Founder and Chairman of M&R. “Her foresight, intellect and capacity to handle ‘bet-the-company’ cases are well above and beyond most other attorneys her age, and, in fact, at any age.” Varnado’s vision for the office is to foster a relationally-centered business based on confidence and trust. “That is crucial,” she says, “and puts my team in the best position to provide exceptional service to our clients.” Connect with Lauren Varnado via email at lvarnado@mrllp.com, or 713-422-2121.

Music Spotlight - Nuevo Nuevo plays Texas music like you’ve never heard before ARTICLE BY CHRISTA EIXMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY NUEVO

If you’re looking for your next favorite music genre to explore, check out Nuevo’s unique twist on Tejano Soul. Combining traditional Tejano with rock ‘n’ roll, country, gulf coast R&B, and Tex-Mex, their unique sound attracts people from all different backgrounds. Growing up along the Texas/Mexico border, band members David Jimenez and Dante Schewbel listened to all kinds of different music. Inspired by musicians like Freddy Fender, Los Lobos, and the Texas Tornados, the duo decided they wanted to make music from a very young age. They teamed up with Anthony

Ferrell, Nico Leophonte, and Andrew Trube and began writing and recording songs. Nuevo plays music with passion and soul, forging connections through the power of sound. “Music is the last bit of magic that I still believe in,” says guitarist David Jimenez. “Being able to heal myself and others at the same time is what makes music so special.” Nuevo makes its way to Houston to open for Los Lobos on May 14th at the Heights Theater. Their music is available on all streaming platforms and on their website NuevoMusica.com.
