Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. I think you will agree, creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy, but in the pages of this issue I have put together a few resources to help create your dream home. We sat down with Daphne Oz to learn her tips about entertaining with ease. She stresses that hosting in your home should be about memories and connection without all the stress. LBJ Construction also offers great advice about remodeling and renovating your home. In business for nearly 30 years they know a thing or two about navigating the Houston market. If you are like me and love a good weekend brunch, read about Rosalie Italian Soul in the C. Baldwin Hotel. Not only does the restaurant serve delicious food - the menu is based off of Chris Constantino's great-grandmother's recipes, so you are getting a home cooked meal every time you dine there. I also like a great luxury staycation, so I have rounded up three luxury hotels where you can count on a sumptuous stay in one of their indulgent suites. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. From my home to yours, I wish you cozy vibes and long lasting memories.

Remodeling or renovating your home can have a tremendous impact on your life because your home is your sanctuary. LBJ Construction believes that renovating your home is not just a financial investment but a quality-of-life investment, as well. In business for nearly three decades, LBJ Construction has built its business on referrals by going the extra mile for their clients. The experts at LBJ Construction sat down with us to share five of their most popular remodeling projects to upgrade your home and lifestyle. Kitchen Remodel If your current kitchen needs an update or additional functionality to its current layout, it may be time for a kitchen remodel. Open-concept floor plans, endless prep space, and tons of storage are just some of the countless ways to add utility and beauty to your room. Bathroom Remodel Turn your current bathroom into a luxurious spalike oasis. Additional storage and oversized walk-in showers are the most popular current renovations.

Laundry Room Renovation The laundry room is a high-traffic area that usually needs an upgrade, but it is often one of the last rooms to be remodeled because it is constantly in use. From adding additional storage to built-in hidden drying racks and ironing boards - no matter how small this space is, it has the potential to be maximized. Not only will this increase your home value, but it will also boost your quality of life. Outdoor Kitchen Addition Outdoor living spaces and outdoor kitchens are a popular remodel. Houstonians choose to transform their backyard into a space for the whole family to enjoy. Adding a covered outdoor kitchen and living space can help homeowners utilize their backyard’s usable space to enjoy the over 300 days of sunny warm weather Houston gets each year. Recreational Space From craft rooms to at-home gyms, office spaces, saunas, and even recording studios, LBJ Construction helps Houston homeowners create the perfect space for their homes. Recreational areas increase home values and add to owners’ enjoyment and use of their homes.

Home décor matters because it reflects your personality and lifestyle. Houston's showrooms provide an outstanding array of choices whether you are looking for beautiful stemware for your next dinner party, a statement piece of art or furniture, or unique accessories. While some choose to stay au courant with the latest décor trends, others hunt for timeless treasures that will breathe new life into their space. Either way, we've rounded up an impressive lot of businesses that are sure to help with your decorating needs. DIAGNOSING AND TREATING EPILEPSY AND SEIZURES Edgar Allan Poe, Vincent Van Gogh, Lewis Carroll and Theodore Roosevelt all had epilepsy. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder of the central nervous system characterized by abnormal brain activity that causes seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations and, sometimes, loss of awareness. About 3.4 million people in the United States live with epilepsy, and approximately 150,000 new cases are diagnosed in the United States each year, according to the Epilepsy Foundation. Moreover, one-third of people diagnosed with epilepsy live with uncontrollable seizures. Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center offers specialized care and diagnostics in its Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and provides advanced surgical treatment options as well. UTHealth Neurosciences neurologist Samden Lhatoo, MD, a McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston professor, director of the Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Program and co-director of the Texas Institute for Restorative Neurotechnologies, and neurosurgeon Nitin Tandon, MD, a UTHealth Neurosciences physician. Both physicians are affiliated with Mischer Neuroscience Institute at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and are successfully restoring quality of life to people with epilepsy.
Q: What are some misconceptions about epilepsy and seizures?
Dr. Tandon: Just because you suffer from a seizure, doesn’t mean you have epilepsy. The diagnosis of epilepsy can’t be made based on the occurrence of seizures alone. Three to 5 percent of people will have a seizure in their lifetime, resulting from trauma to the brain or some other outside stimulus. Epilepsy is different because seizures recur and are unprovoked, or otherwise, unexplained. Also, not all seizures are the grand mal type, most often depicted in the media. Flailing and convulsive movements of the entire body, foaming at the mouth and loss of bodily function occur only in a small percentage of seizures. Seizures may also cause loss of awareness, disorientation, partial movement of one part of the body or brief episodes of olfactory or auditory hallucinations.
There is a perception that something is “off ” with people who suffer seizures, and because their independence may be limited, people think of them as not fully functional individuals. I remind people that epilepsy should be viewed as an intermittent disorder, no different than having asthma and suffering an asthma attack. People with epilepsy can live normal, productive lives if they’re able to manage their epilepsy.
Q: How is epilepsy diagnosed?
Dr. Lhatoo: To be definitively diagnosed with epilepsy, a person’s seizures must be observed. This can be best done within a controlled medical setting, while brain activity, breathing, heart rate and other vitals are monitored and recorded. We conduct this observation in our highly sophisticated Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, or EMU.
Q: What is an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)?
Dr. Lhatoo: We admit patients to our EMU to help us diagnose epilepsy and to determine if a person is a good candidate for surgery to reduce or eliminate the occurrence of seizures. Our EMU is staffed by specially trained nurses and technologists, who perform multimodal monitoring of a patient using electroencephalography, or EEG, technology. EEGs involve the placement of electrodes on the scalp or directly on the brain, through tiny incisions made in the scalp by a neurosurgeon in the operating room, as in robotic stereo EEG (SEEG). Patients then stay in the EMU, where anti-seizure medication is withheld, sleep patterns may be manipulated and exercise performed to induce seizures. Brain activity and other vitals are measured and recorded to show when a disruption of normal activity occurs, indicating a seizure. Patients stay in the EMU long enough for us to observe two to three seizures, usually 3 to 7 days, allowing us to capture what occurs during a patient’s seizure and where in a patient’s brain the seizure is occurring.
Q: What advanced surgical treatment options for epilepsy are available?
Dr. Tandon: The goal of epilepsy surgery is to identify

where seizures are originating in the brain and disrupt their pathway to control or eliminate them. Traditional epilepsy surgery involved first accessing the brain through the skull, placing electrodes directly on the brain and monitoring brain activity for several days in an EMU. Once the area of the brain producing the seizures was identified, we would remove that part of the brain and the seizures would stop.
Samden Lhatoo, MD Neurologist
Wit h technologica l advances, available first in this region at Memorial Hermann-TMC, we can Nitin Tandon, MD accomplish t his same Neurosurgeon localization of seizures using robotic SEEG, where we place tiny probes into the brain through minimal incisions in the scalp. Patients then spend time in the EMU for ongoing monitoring. Once the seizures’ origination is mapped, we determine if we should remove that portion of the brain, use laser ablation to destroy misfiring signals or implant a neuromodulation device, which is like a pacemaker for the brain, to redirect electrical signals of the brain on the correct path.
Q: What impact are these innovative surgical treatments having on patients’ lives?
Dr. Tandon: Epilepsy surgery can drastically improve patients’ seizure control and their quality of life. Once seizures are reduced or eliminated, most patients become independent. They can drive, hold a vocational position and live independently. Most patients are able to reduce the dose and number of medications they use to control their seizures. About one-third of patients can eliminate seizure medications altogether. Many report improved cognition and brain function once the seizures are gone and the medications are reduced.

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in
New Jersey, and now my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am. My mother’s family is part Italian and my father’s family is Turkish, and these two incredible food cultures inform so much of how I grew up eating and how I love to cook now. The vibrance of flavors, passion for gathering family and friends to the table, and effortless ways in which simple meals become beautiful memories are just some of the ways I try to infuse all my cooking with the joy of this heritage. I’ve been to culinary school, but every bite I take continues my education, and the foundation of my love of cooking started at my mother’s and grandmother’s elbows, watching and then helping them whip up these delicious, nourishing meals for their big families. A perfect example of the kind of epically memorable, wonderfully simple recipes I grew up on is my Grandmother’s Eggless Caesar Salad. It’s bright with lemon and garlic, one or two secret ingredients, plenty of pecorino and parmesan cheese, and ultra-creamy despite no raw eggs! It’s one of my absolute favorite salads, so I made it into an IGTV recipe video about a year ago that has been viewed nearly 7.5 million times online. I get giddy every time someone shares a photo or video of them making it at home.
CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach
is: Abundant Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for
dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you. I always set a drink out that guests can help themselves to when they arrive, which frees my hands up to continue any final preparations and has the added benefit of helping them get comfortable and feel right at home.. I like to think my decorating melds are simple, elegant and polished with very plush, soft, round edges, and I love anything that feels handmade with a story to tell. I love making edible centerpieces and will put tons of bowls and platters out in the center of the table spilling over with fresh produce or herbs in terracotta planters that guests can help themselves to. I enjoy colorful glasses, tons of gold candlesticks, and then handmade ceramic plates and pretty, linen napkins to keep it textural. If you’re looking for a yummy signature cocktail, I’ve fallen in love with the Plume & Petal range of mid-proof premium infused vodkas (and am thrilled to be their newest brand ambassador!). Each of their lemon, peach and cucumber flavors is naturally infused and layered with essences like white tea and elderflower and just a hint of honey for sweetness, so the taste is sophisticated and bespoke.
CL: WHAT INSPIRED YOUR NEWEST COOKBOOK AND WHAT CAN WE GET EXCITED ABOUT? DO: In “Eat Your Heart Out: All-Fun, No-Fuss
Food To Celebrate Eating Clean” I share the techniques I’ve used to get my mind, energy and body back on track after each pregnancy or anytime I’ve needed to reboot good habits—without ever losing the joy of cooking, the fun of mealtime and the stress-free pleasure of doing it intuitively. “Eat Your Heart Out” is a collection of 150 recipes free from gluten and refined sugar that have consistently helped me lose weight without ever disappointing my demanding tastebuds—or making healthy eating feel like a job I don’t need or want. CL: IN ADDITION TO YOUR COOKBOOK, WHAT ARE SOME HOUSE-WARMING OR DINNER HOST GIFT SUGGESTIONS? DO: I find a little gift basket of some of my favorite sea-
soning essentials goes a long way and feels personal and unique. I’ll add things like a favorite herbal tea like the Plain- Rooibos Passionfruit, some delicious Kosterina or Fancy Peasant olive oil, Westbourne Togarashi Crunch (such as an incredible salty-crispy pairing with buttery togarashi spiced chex cereal, toasty nuts, and a little bit of sweet to balance the spice! It’s the perfect bar snack FYI), Daphnis & Chloe herbs and spices (love their quality and pretty glass jars!), Gjelina Honey Trio, Maldon Flaky Smoked Sea Salt, Primo Botanica Tree Hugger Chaga Chocolate, Olive & Linen Turkish Hand Towels…the list goes on and on! It’s so much fun to discover amazing small brands and share these yummy finds with friends. When it comes to housewarming, helping to outfit the bar is a safe bet. I love the swanky, retro feel of these Fizz Glasses. A gorgeous wood cutting board that is simple enough to go with any decor and as lovely to display as it is to use.
